“Overcompensating” creator and star Benito Skinner wants you to know that he’s read your criticisms that he’s too old to play a college student on his Prime Video comedy series — and he wants you to know that he doesn’t think “anything could matter less.”
In Wednesday’s episode of “Ride,” his podcast with co-star, writer and real-life bestie Mary Beth Barone, the two dove into how audiences have been responding to their LGBTQ coming-of-ager, both the good and the bad. Barone picked up the conversation by acknowledging that some viewers have taken issue with the series’ opaque time and place — do Ashlee Simpson jokes make sense alongside Alison Roman jokes? But she maintained that “it’s fun for us to be able to play in this sort of unknown time and space.” And ultimately, she added, “Has anything mattered less?”

It’s been several years since I graduated from college, so I’m unqualified to say with certainty whether or not it’s a regular occurrence for today’s savvy students to bond over their love of Ashlee Simpson, whose last album came out before some of them were born.
This unexpected celebration of the “Pieces of Me” auteur is one of several moments in Benito Skinner’s new Amazon comedy Overcompensating that feel not exactly “wrong,” but more appropriate for juvenile millennials than Zoomers. Almost every pop culture reference in Overcompensating, including extended nods to Twilight, Glee and the reappropriated Megan Fox classic Jennifer’s Body, comes across, at best, as a thing that the main characters might have discovered from their much older siblings. Or parents.

The oft-mocked pop superstar Katy Perry says that she’s sick of social media mobs treating her like a “human piñata,” but Saturday Night Live fans want to know if that metaphorical piñata is possibly filled with fresh fruit.
On May 20, 2017, Perry appeared on SNL as that weekend’s musical guest, bringing along the popular Atlanta-based rap group Migos who featured on her then-new single "Bon Appétit." When Perry took the stage for the second time to perform the new single with the visibly uncomfortable rappers, the ill-fitting combination of A-list musical talent led to one of the most awkward musical performances on the sketch show since Ashlee Simpson prospector-jigged her way into SNL infamy.
Today, as Perry’s ongoing “Lifetimes” tour draws fiercely negative reviews while clips of the pop star performing some strange choreography go viral with millions of hate-views, the SNL fandom looks back on the time...

Kacey Musgraves is 36 years old, and she lives in a country that supposedly values free speech, so she should therefore be able to post pretty much whatever she wants on her social media accounts.
And yet, a post in which Kacey doesn’t call anyone out or make any sort of threat — hell, a post in which she doesn’t even swear or express a political opinion of any kind — has created a minor uproar online.
The tweet in question? Well, if you have fun, funny friends, or if you follow interesting celebrities, then it’s probably the sort of thing you see and chuckle at a dozen times a day.

Saturday Night Live has had its share of actual musical-guest scandals over the years. Kanye went on a Maga rant during the goodbyes. Sinead O’Connor tore up a picture of the Pope. Ashlee Simpson sheepishly walked off during a live performance thanks to a miscued lip-sync track. Fear and Rage Against the Machine trashed Studio 8H. But those controversies pale — or so it seems — to Morgan Wallen walking off the SNL set in the wrong direction.
Wallen’s awkward SNL exit is the story that refuses to die. In case you missed it, he stood on stage with host Mikey Madison while she said good night to the crowd, exchanged pleasantries with the host while they embraced, then wandered off into the audience rather than hugging Mikey Day while the credits rolled. On another night when SNL was running long, we might never have seen Wallen’s exit as the...

In the annals of “things that have gone wrong on Saturday NIght Live” — Ashlee Simpson’s lip-synching disaster, Charles Rocket’s inopportune F-bomb, slam dancers destroying Studio 8H during a Fear performance — no individual episode can compare to the debacle surrounding the show’s live, prime-time special from Mardi Gras in 1977.
Saturday Night had become the hottest show on TV, and NBC was ready to cash in on that early success with a primetime special. Lorne Michaels was eager to take his show on the road, using iconic cities’ architecture as urban comedy sets. When someone suggested New Orleans as a possible destination, Michaels was all for it. “Let’s go get steeped in it!” he proclaimed, according to Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live.
The cast was stoked as well. Who wouldn’t want to escape New York’s winter for a week or two in the sunshine?...

Anything can happen on live TV, and some of the most memorable, “What the hell?” moments in “Saturday Night Live”s 50-year history including a lip-sync screwup, political statements and even a host doing bizarre dancehall reggae cosplay.
Here’s some of the most talked-about performances that did not go on as planned:
Sinead O’Connor tears up a picture of the pope on SNL in 1992 (Credit: NBC) Sinéad O’Conner, 1992
The Irish singer was booed — and subsequently banned — after tearing up a picture of the then pontiff, Pope John Paul II, and saying, “Fight the real enemy.” Audiences might not have realized exactly what she was protesting, but she was calling out the entire Catholic Church for its long, shameful history of covering up sexual abuse by priests. She was of course vindicated, repeatedly, in the years that followed.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live, NBC will re-air its very first episode on Feb 15, 2025 at 11:30 p.m. Et/Pt. The landmark sketch comedy variety show premiered on Oct. 11, 1975, then titled NBC's Saturday Night. Created by Lorne Michaels, the show was imagined as a hip, late-night comedy hour for young people. 2024's film Saturday Night, directed by Jason Reitman, covers the chaotic minutes leading up to the historic premiere, and would make a great complementary watch with the re-aired premiere. The series would officially be named Saturday Night Live in September 1977 after the network acquired the rights, which were previously owned by ABC for Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell.
The series would star an ensemble cast of up-and-coming writers and performers from the comedy scene, known for the first three seasons as the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players." The first performers in the show included head writer,...

Jodie Turner-Smith and Ashlee Simpson-Ross were all smiles as they stepped out to celebrate a special night in Hollywood!
The duo came together for the launch of “Hollywood Virgin”, a brand-new book by brand marketing strategist Jason Felts, featuring a foreword by his business partner, Sir Richard Branson. The event also supported the Lafd Foundation in the wake of recent devastating wildfires.
Also in attendance were Ashlee’s husband Evan Ross, Lance Bass, Lisa Vanderpump, and Brian Austin Green.
And, of course, there was a little Malcolm in the Middle nostalgia in the air. Justin Berfield, best known as Reese from the beloved sitcom, made a rare public appearance to support his longtime business partner. With rumors swirling about a potential reboot, Justin was asked if he’d return, to which he teased, “While it would be such fun to reunite with the cast, I’m not sure if I’ll be returning.

It's hard to believe, but this year, Saturday Night Live turns 50 years old. Created by Lorne Michaels, the show premiered on Oct. 11, 1975 and while it didn't go quite as smoothly, it certainly became a cultural phenomenon. Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, George Coe, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Michael O'Donoghue, Gilda Radner, and host George Carlin were the first to appear on the legendary show. And now, as its 50th anniversary special approaches, NBC has released a partial list of major A-list actors, musicians, and celebrities who will appear.
SNL50: The Anniversary Special will feature a who's who of major celebrities, per Variety. They include Sir Paul McCartney, Tom Hanks, Kim Kardashian, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Scarlett Johansson, Dave Chappelle, Miley Cyrus, Paul Simon, Robert De Niro, Sabrina Carpenter, Pedro Pascal, Bad Bunny, Quinta Brunson, Peyton Manning, Woody Harrelson, Adam Driver, Ayo Edebiri, and John Mulaney. More stars will be announced soon.

Give it up to Questlove — his new documentary, Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music, is killer, especially its imaginative opening montage of musical mash-ups. But while Questlove (mostly) wanted to honor SNL’s long history of eclectic, electric performances, not every musical guest delivered the goods. I’m not talking about musicians who turned in great performances but still caused the show headaches, like Sinead O’Connor, Rage Against the Machine or Elvis Costello either. Instead, let’s check out four outright terrible performances that belong in the show’s musical Hall of Shame.
1 Ashlee Simpson
The undisputed champion, and a performance memorably bad enough to make Questlove’s documentary. Can we even call it a performance? 50 Years of SNL Music explains that Simpson’s voice was nearly shot the night Jude Law hosted, necessitating a compromise in which she’d sing one song live and lip-sync the other. For 50 years, Saturday Night Live has entertained audiences with live comedy and music. Sometimes, the drama behind the scenes can be equally appealing. But according to Lorne Michaels, one longstanding SNL myth isn't based on the truth.
Michaels and some cast members have hinted that certain hosts aren't welcomed back to Studio 8H. So it stood to reason that the same went for musical guests who either pushed the envelope too far, didn't follow SNL rules, or just flat-out underperformed.
Not the case, says the Saturday Night Live boss. “I’ll read it sometimes in the Post, ‘So and so’s banned for life,' " Michaels said in the documentary Ladies & Gentlemen...50 Years of SNL Music. "And no, we’ve never banned anyone. We’re way too crass and opportunistic. If something’s hot, we’re going to go for it and have it on."

No matter how a person might feel about “Saturday Night Live”’s jokes or cast or host choices, there’s absolutely no denying that for the better part of the last half century, it has been the most consistently powerful platform in America for musicians, whether they’re superstars, rising stars or falling stars.
Virtually every major artist has performed on it, and for musicians on the rise, it’s a sign that they have almost arrived, that they’ve attained enough popularity or curiosity or — perhaps most important — controversy for the show to take a chance on them. It was the first mainstream American television show to feature new wave (Devo 1978), hip-hop (Funky Four Plus One 1981), hardcore punk, and many other sub-genres.
What serious music fan can’t remember a classic performance on the show, if not a dozen, if not 50? David Bowie — who delivered arguably the best all-time...

As a kid, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson would go to bed on Saturday nights at 8:30 p.m., but his parents were “cool enough” to wake him up to watch the musical performances on Saturday Night Live as well as Soul Train. So when he got the call from Lorne Michaels to direct a documentary of the musical side of the series celebrating 50 years, he was ready.
But he did more research. “I knew those episodes by heart,” says Questlove, who got the call in 2020 to work on Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music and was 4 years old when SNL launched in 1975. “I was trying to do the math in my head. I’m like, ‘Well, it’s 2020 and the anniversary is in 2025. If I can do about five to seven episodes daily, then maybe I can catch up to it.”

Steven Tyler doesn’t want to miss a thing, so he’s reuniting Aerosmith for his 6th annual Grammys viewing party.
They’ll be joined by A-listers like Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Linda Perry, Matt Sorum, Nuno Bettencourt, and Lainey Wilson for the philanthropic event on Sunday, Feb. 2 at the Hollywood Palladium. Tiffany Haddish will serve as host. (See Gold Derby’s Grammy predictions.)
Aerosmith announced its retirement from touring in 2024 after Tyler fractured his larynx the year prior. The four-time Grammy-winning rock band consists of lead vocalist Tyler, bassist Hamilton, drummer Joey Kramer, and guitarists Perry and Brad Whitford. This will mark Aerosmith’s first time performing together since Sept. 9, 2023.

There’s a scene in Questlove and co-director Oz Rodriguez’s “Ladies and Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music” (which airs January 27 on NBC) that has, as far as we know, the only cultural intersection of Eddie Murphy and John Belushi appearing on screen together. Ever. It’s 1981 and former cast member John Belushi pulled some strings to get the punk rock band Fear booked as musical guests on Halloween alongside host Donald Pleasance. Much has been made about Fear’s controversial performance over the years. And, in reality, the massive wave of destruction to hit 30 Rock that night wasn’t much more than a few kids slam dancing on the stage. Two of those “kids” being Belushi — who is in full slam dancing mode and is hard to spot, but we know he’s there – and another being Murphy, who climbs up on the back of the stage mostly...

In a move to that will deepen the feud between two rap titans, Drake has filed a lawsuit against his own label, Universal Music Group, for using illegal methods to promote the latest Kendrick Lamar diss track against him, “Not Like Us.”
According to legal documents, Drake claims the musical monolith used AI bots to promote the single, which was released this past May. The Toronto native said that the information was given to him from an “inside source” indicating that Umg breached FCC statutes in practicing payola, which is paying for airtime.
Under state law, the filing is considered a “pre-action,” which calls for a probe before a full suit is filed. According to official documents, Umg breached state law in its conduct, specifically the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (Rico).

Jessica Simpson sparked divorce rumors with a social media post, and now her husband, Eric Johnson, has fanned the flames.
Only Eric didn’t post anything cryptic on Instagram like Jessica.
Instead, the former NFL player was spotted in public without his wedding band.
As TMZ reports, Eric stepped out in Los Angeles this week sans any bling on his left ring finger.
Eric was with his mom for the weekday stroll and didn’t hide that his left ring finger was bare.
Normally, Eric sports his wedding band while out and about, so his naked ring finger certainly caught the attention of the paparazzi.
Jessica Simpson’s colleagues have reportedly spoken to divorce lawyers
TMZ writes that Eric was “looking over what may be important documents,” after his wife, Jessica, contacted a divorce lawyer.
TMZ also reported that two people “directly connected” to Jessica contacted divorce lawyers within the last two months.

Saturday Night Live has played host to some controversial music moments — Sinead O’Connor tearing up a picture of the pope, Elvis Costello’s rogue “Radio Radio” outburst, a legendarily destructive set by Fear — but only one still gets awkward laughs: that of Ashlee Simpson, whose 2004 SNL appearance found her stopping during her song and doing a jig that she described in the closing monologue as an impromptu hoedown after her band played the wrong number.
In a recently unearthed interview with Lorne Michaels from that same year, the SNL head remembered the complete shock — and nothingness — that was on stage that night from Ashlee Simpson. “I was in the control room going, well, I mean there’s just egg out there now. I mean there was nothing to watch.”
Michaels would add that Ashlee Simpson’s immediately infamous SNL appearance left him in a rare position: he had no control.

Unearthed audio from the week of October 23, 2004 at Saturday Night Live was just released, and if you’re wondering why that week is significant…it’s when Ashlee Simpson performed.
While live on TV that Saturday night in 2004, Ashlee was found to be lip-syncing during her performance as musical guest.
Well, it just so happened that during that week on the show, 60 Minutes was doing interviews with the cast and crew, and they got SNL creator Lorne Michael‘s real-time reaction to what went down.
Keep reading to find out more…
The unearthed audio was released in the new episode of the “60 Minutes: A Second Look” podcast.
“Oh, I think accidents happen. I think that’s the nature of live television,” Lorne said at the time in reaction to the now-infamous incident,
60 Minutes journalist Lesley Stahl then said it’s his job to make sure that these kinds of accidents don’t happen.

As Saturday Night Live readies its 50th season, which launches Sept. 28, 60 Minutes is releasing never-heard-before audio from a 20-year-old interview with its famously private maestro Lorne Michaels and his talent from the period.
Running as part of the news magazine’s newly launched podcast series, 60 Minutes: A Second Look, the episode weaves together interviews that Lesley Stahl conducted in 2004, when the show was granted full access to a week at SNL — one that happened to coincide with the Ashlee Simpson lip-syncing fiasco — but only aired some three minutes of the interviews. Left on the cutting room floor was material from Michaels, who recently spoke to THR at length for a cover story, as well as former SNL writer Conan O’Brien and then cast members likes Seth Meyers, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Darrell Hammond.

The Vampire Diaries co-creator Julie Plec reflects on casting the show's three most crucial roles, fifteen years after the show's premiere. One of the most popular teen dramas in recent history, the L.J. Smith adaptation helped launch and reinvigorate the careers of its lead actors Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder. With their respective performances as Elena Gilbert and the Salvatore brothers, Stefan and Damon, the trio anchored The CW series for most of its run. But with a few changes to The Vampire Diaries' cast could have gone very differently.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, to mark the 15th anniversary of the show's premiere, as it debuted in September 2009, Plec reflected on the drama's legacy and went into detail about the many twists and turns that led to casting Dobrev, Somerhalder, and Wesley. Plec, who created the show with Scream and Dawson's Creek writer Kevin Williamson,...

In 2004, Ashlee Simpson was primarily known as a little sister. By the time she began working on her debut album, her older sister Jessica Simpson had skyrocketed from a young, Southern, blond pop princess to a bona fide A-lister, thanks to the hit reality show The Newlyweds, which chronicled Jessica’s marriage to 98 Degrees heartthrob Nick Lachey.
As a teen, Ashlee was famous by proxy. She toured with her sister and started to act on TV shows like Malcolm in the Middle and 7th Heaven. Her singing ambitions stayed on...
