Johnny Depp’s Wouldn’t Have Directed Modi If It Wasn’t For Al Pacino
Image
Johnny Depp didn’t plan to return to the director’s chair after more than two decades, but fate, and a phone call from Al Pacino, had other plans. The Pirates of the Caribbean star recently revealed that his involvement in Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness, a biopic about Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani, only began after Pacino reached out to him personally.

The legendary actor had been attached to the project for years and suddenly believed Depp was the right person to bring it to life. He said at the recent Spain film festival (via USA Today),

What interested me initially about making the film was a very strange phone call from Al [Pacino] saying, ‘Hey, you remember that Modigliani thing I was going to do years ago? I think you should direct it.’ I thought what do you mean? But the fact that, for some reason,...

Modigliani – Three Days on the Wing of Madness review – Johnny Depp’s painter as bohemian badass
Stephen Graham
A lineup including Stephen Graham and Al Pacino seems wasted on this lavish, but hackneyed drama about the Italian artist

Some very cliched roistering, life-affirming wine-drinking, bourgeois-defying artistic shenanigans here from the veteran screenwriting couple Jerzy and Mary Olson-Kromolowski who have adapted a 1980 stage play, Modigliani by Dennis McIntyre, about the Italian sculptor and painter Amedeo Modigliani, known as Modi. Johnny Depp directs and perhaps sees his subject as a bohemian badass not unlike Hunter S Thompson, whom he played in Terry Gilliam’s 1998 movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – and perhaps not altogether unlike how he sees himself.

It is 1916 in Paris and the brutality of war is destroying the belle époque; Riccardo Scamarcio plays Modigliani, a brilliant, sensual but penniless artist facing poverty and casual antisemitism. Having got into a chaotic affray at a pompous posh restaurant – filmed like a deleted scene from Richard Lester’s The Three Musketeers...

Al Pacino on how he got his Modigliani film off the ground after 30 years
Riccardo Scamarcio
Exclusive: Actor talks of difficulties of getting ‘art film’ made about tortured artist, played by Riccardo Scamarcio

He is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, having made his name in the 1970s gangster classic The Godfather. Yet, despite his fame and Oscars recognition, Al Pacino struggled for 30 years to make a movie about one of the 20th century’s greatest artists because “art films” are “always difficult to get off the ground”.

He refused to give up on a drama about Amedeo Modigliani, a tortured genius who faced repeated rejection before his life was cut short in 1920 by tubercular meningitis, aged 35.

Johnny Depp’s Post-trial Comeback: All the Movies He’s Made (And What’s Next)
Image
If resilience had a pulse and wore kohl eyeliner, it would beat like Johnny Depp’s heart post-trial. The actor doesn’t flinch. Not when the world raised its torches, not when headlines sank their teeth in, and certainly not when asked whether he’d have done anything differently.

Recently speaking to The Sunday Times, Depp unpacks the trial that turned his personal life into a global theater. He refers to himself, dryly, as a “crash test dummy for #MeToo,” not in jest, but as an indictment of how easily narratives take precedence over nuance. Years later, the storm has passed…at least on paper. And the Pirates of the Caribbean actor? Still standing, still sharp, still Johnny Depp.

From the powdered wigs of Louis Xv in Jeanne du Barry, to the frenetic genius of Modigliani in Modì, and now the murky underbelly of crime in Day Drinker, he has...

'I'm Sure I Will': Laurence Fishburne Offers Hopeful John Wick 5 Return Update
Image
With John Wick 5 officially moving forward at Lionsgate, fans anticipate learning how Keanu Reeves' eponymous character fared after seemingly dying in Chapter 4 and whether his usual running mates will be with him for the ride. One of Wick's allies, the Bowery King, could feature in the upcoming sequel as Laurence Fishburne offers a hopeful update about potentially reprising his role.

During an interview with Collider, Fishburne addressed whether he'd received the call to return for John Wick 5 after Lionsgate officially confirmed the upcoming action follow-up earlier this month. Though Fishburne conceded he's yet to hear from Reeves or franchise director Chad Stahelski about John Wick 5, he feels confident he'll hear from them about possibly coming back for the film. "So, I haven't heard from Keanu and Chad about John Wick 5, but I'm sure I will," he said.

Fishburne's return as Bowery King would make sense, considering he's been in every...

What’s So Special About ‘Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness’?
Image
After a break of 27 years, Johnny Depp returned to the director’s chair with Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, the biographical drama about the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. A great cast with Riccardo Scamarcio in the leading role along with Stephen Graham, Antonia Desplat, and Al Pacino, this was a passion project that took decades.

Bringing Amedeo Modigliani’s story to the screen was nearly as interesting as the artist’s life itself. Al Pacino’s vision in the late 1970s came to fruition under Depp’s direction in 2024. The movie is based on a Dennis McIntyre play, and it takes viewers through bohemian lives in Paris in the early 20th century.

The film has raised interest due to its subject regarding artistic integrity and the complexities of the art-commerce relationship.

Johnny Depp’s Dior Sauvage Deal: The Jaw-Dropping $20 Million+ He Makes From It
Image
Johnny Depp’s Dior Sauvage Deal ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Johnny Depp locked down the fragrance deal that’ll make your jaw hit the floor. In 2023, Dior threw a massive $20 million+ at him to keep rocking Sauvage for the next three years. That’s not just a win—it’s a straight-up flex. In perspective, Robert Pattinson’s $12 million Dior Homme deal and Brad Pitt’s $7 million Chanel No. 5 pact are now the little leagues.

Dior stood by Depp when things got messy. Even after a U.K. court ruled against him in 2020 in his libel case against The Sun, the brand didn’t back down. While Hollywood distanced itself, Dior leaned in, keeping Depp as the face of its best-selling cologne despite public pressure. That gamble paid off. After he won his 2022 defamation trial against Amber Heard, Sauvage sales skyrocketed. Lvmh CEO Bernard Arnault credited Depp’s image as a...

“Just about ripped me to shreds”: The $6 Million Movie That Was So Horrendous Johnny Depp Ordered to Never Release It in America

Johnny Depp’s second directorial venture, Modì – Three Days on the Wing of Madness, was released in theaters last year. It came 27 years after his debut directorial venture, The Brave. If you haven’t heard of such a film, it was probably because Depp refused to release the film in the United States after the critical reception of the film was negative.

The 1997 film saw Depp also take on the lead role and cast Marlon Brando in a supporting role. He admitted that The Brave was a challenging film to make in more than one way. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor didn’t want to make the same mistake of taking on too much work and decided to stay only behind the camera for Modì.

Johnny Depp did not want to release his bad directorial debut film in the U.

Johnny Depp's Trail Lawyer Feared the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Actor Could Have Shown Anger on the Stand

It is now more than two years since Johnny Depp and Amber Heard faced each other in one of the biggest and most public trials ever televised. Despite the passing of time, there are still discussions about how the two actors handled themselves during and after the rulings were made. While Depp was seen to have come out the successor in the main, despite being found guilty on his own defamation charge, his legal team has revealed they had some doubts about his ability to keep his cool when taking the stand.

In a new A&e special, Interrogation Raw: Celebrity Under Oath, one of Depp’s lawyers, Benjamin Chew, explains that although the actor was well known for joking his way around Heard’s legal team, there was a worry that he could be goaded into reacting angrily in court. Chew said:

John Wick Proved Everyone Wrong 7 Years Ago And Will Do It Again If Keanu Reeves Return In John Wick 5
Image
John Wick did something truly impressive and surprising in 2017, and if Keanu Reeves returns for John Wick 5, the franchise will almost definitely do it again. After the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4, the future of the franchise looks somewhat uncertain. There are a number of upcoming John Wick spinoffs in varying stages of development, including Ana de Armas' Ballerina and Donnie Yen's Caine spinoff, as well as the upcoming TV show Under the High Table. Even with so many new projects on the horizon, however, it's not clear if Keanu Reeves will continue to play John Wick.

After 10 years of John Wick, Keanu Reeves is almost synonymous with the eponymous character. It's hard to imagine anyone leading the John Wick franchise, even though there are already a few contenders. As such, there's a chance that Reeves could return to the confirmed John Wick 5. The ending of John Wick: Chapter 4, however,...

Johnny Depp Smoothly Steps Into Second Directorial Role
Image
Johnny Depp’s first attempt at making a Hollywood comeback came in the form of the mid-French language movie, ‘Jeanne Du Barry.’ And though ‘Modi: Three Days On the Wings of Madness’ isn’t likely to be the big one, it’s already receiving better acclaim than Maïwenn’s ‘Jeanne Du Barry.’

‘Modi’ is just his second directorial project and his first in nearly three decades. For the movie, Depp, 61, worked with longtime friend Al Pacino, 84, Riccardo Scamarcio, 44, Antonia Desplat and Stephen Graham.

Depp and Pacino have imagined and discussed the concept for many years, but just recently brought it to life for the enjoyment of many.

John Wicks 10 Strongest Enemies, Ranked
Image
In 2014, Keanu Reeves starred in the first John Wick. The first trailer promised an action-packed film filled with knife and gun fights, but people weren't sure how strong the film would be. After all, John Wick falls into a specific brand of action films that can grow stale and repetitive. The first film breathed new life into the action-thriller subgenre and Reeves' incredible performance guaranteed a sequel.

Currently, there are four John Wick films. John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) is the newest film in the franchise, but there are still more projects on the horizon. A female-led spin-off called Ballerina is expected to release in June 2025 and John Wick: Chapter 5 is also in the works. Reeves' compelling performance as the title character speaks for itself, but some of the villains and assassins John Wick has faced also deserve credit for what makes this franchise incredible. An action-thriller is only as strong as its strongest foes.

The Hottest Ticket in Town: Johnny Depp to Close Out Rome Film Fest With ‘Modi’
Image
Johnny Depp’s new film Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness will close out the Rome Film Festival on Saturday, Oct. 26, and the denizens of The Eternal City can’t wait for the star to arrive.

Indeed, the highlight of an otherwise unremarkable edition of the 10-day-long fest will undoubtedly be Johnny Depp’s appearance on Saturday to present the biopic Modi, which premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival and chronicles three chaotic days in the life of Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani.

Meanwhile, at an event that is separate from the film fest, Depp’s film will on Friday night receive the coveted Capri Cult Award.

The producer of Modi, Barry Navidi, a long-time friend of Al Pacino, will pick up the Capri prize on Friday night.

The Capri Cult Award is bestowed by the Capri Institute, the non-profit organization that organizes an annual film fest on the eponymous island.

Al Pacino Convinced Johnny Depp To Take On ‘Modi’
Image
Johnny Depp’s comeback to Hollywood may not be as meteoric as his initial rise to fame, but he’s definitely taking more meaningful steps than cancelled counterpart Kevin Spacey.

However bold he’s been to so far carve his Hollywood comeback, he wouldn’t have taken on his latest project had it not been for an old friend.

Johnny Depp – Seemingly Calls Amber Heard Defamation Case A “Soap Opera”

Depp is still winning and scoring points despite being accused of sexual and physical abuse from his ex Amber Heard. For one his ‘Modi’ stars believe that “he’s the nicest, the kindest, the sweetest man I’ve ever worked with in my life” and should be celebrated so.

‘Modi’ marks Depp’s second directorial project and first in as many years. The movie follows Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani’s life, with legendary actor Al Pacino playing one of the lead roles.

Johnny Depp Says His Life Was a Soap Opera During Amber Heard Trial
Image
Johnny Depp has managed to survive the ultra-damaging effects of ex Amber Heard‘s allegations to continue to have a Hollywood career.

At the moment, he’s currently doing a press run for his second directorial project, ‘Modi,’ starring lead star Riccardo Scamarcio, Antonia Desplat, Al Pacino and Stephen Graham.

Johnny Depp Admits He’s Been “Through A Number of Things” As He Promotes New Movie

Depp and the stars of ‘Modi — Three Days on the Wing of Madness’ are currently deep in the promotional tour for the movie.

Even though Depp admitted that Al Pacino was the reason he decided to take on the project in the first place, once he did, he quickly saw similarities between the artist the movie portrays and his own beleaguered life.

“Each [character] has their story, because I’m sure we can say that I’ve been through a number of things here and there,...

Johnny Depp Makes Surprise Visit to Children's Hospital in Spain as Captain Jack Sparrow
Image
Playing a main character in a Disney-owned franchise comes with a lot of responsibility. After starring as Captain Jack Sparrow in five Pirates of the Caribbean films, Johnny Depp's iconic character has been a major favorite for young fans for many years, giving the actor an opportunity to give back in a special way.

Depp recently visited a children's hospital in San Sebastin, Spain, while wearing his Captain Jack Sparrow outfit. Along with bringing back the look, Depp also slipped right back into character, complete with his half-drunken gait as he walked. Video footage has emerged from his trip, with one video shared by The Hollywood Fix revealing Depp interacting with young children in their hospital beds. Though Depp seemingly isn't fluent in Spanish, he was joined by an interpreter to help him better interact with his fans. The actor can even be seen holding an infant who's strapped...

This Bizarre John Wick 5 Theory Somehow Perfectly Explains How Keanu Reeves Character Returns
Image
Although John Wick: Chapter 4 had a definitive ending, a bizarre John Wick 5 theory somehow perfectly explains the return of Keanu Reeves' character. John Wick: Chapter 4 ended with John (Reeves) killing Marquis de Gramont (Bill Skarsgrd), effectively granting himself and Caine (Donnie Yen) freedom from the High Table. In his final moments, John sits on a set of stairs and thinks about his wife before succumbing to his injuries. John Wick characters Winston (Ian McShane) and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) are then seen talking over his gravestone in the final scene.

While the ending of Chapter 4 asserts John Wick is dead, Lionsgate later confirmed John Wick 5 is in development. Director Chad Stahelski also stated the end of the latest movie was supposed to be up to interpretation surrounding whether the skilled assassin is really dead, or now in hiding. Despite this, the latest film wrapped up his story definitively,...

Modi- Three Days On The Wings Of Madness Review: Depp Honors A Legend, Flaws Prevent Greatness
Image
Johnny Depp makes his directorial return with Modi, a film exploring three days in the storied life of Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani in 1920s Paris. Stepping behind the camera for the first time in over twenty years, Depp brings his passion for free spirits to the big screen in telling Modigliani’s story. Riccardo Scamarcio takes on the titular role of the brilliant yet misunderstood artist, a man dying all too young from tuberculosis amid the chaos of war-torn Europe. Alongside a fantastic ensemble that includes Antonia Desplat as Modigliani’s lover Beatrice Hastings and Al Pacino in a memorable cameo, Scamarcio immerses us in Modigliani’s bohemian world.

The film finds Modigliani struggling for recognition as World War I rages. Living hand in mouth as a portraitist in Paris’ cafes, his rebellious spirit lands him in trouble with the elites. We experience the highs and lows of his artistic drive,...

Image
The cast of Johnny Depp’s Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness took to the San Sebastian red carpet Tuesday night to usher in the star’s second directorial feature.

Depp — applauded by the audience shortly before the film screened and given a standing ovation afterwards — was joined by Riccardo Scamarcio and Antonia Desplat at the Kursaal Theater on Spain’s northern coast for the world premiere of Modi, which follows three days in the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.

Also starring Stephen Graham, Bruno Gouery, Luisa Ranieri, Ryan McParland and Al Pacino as art collector Maurice Gangnat, the movie is backdropped by Paris in the middle of World War II as the painter and sculptor strives for recognition. “Hollywood Needs Johnny Depp”: ‘Modi’ Castmembers Urge Industry to Love Their Director Again
Image
Johnny Depp has had, it’s fair to say, a rocky few years in Hollywood.

After a public divorce and subsequent defamation trial involving ex-wife Amber Heard — with claims of domestic violence and extensive abuse erupting from both parties — he is dipping a toe back in the film waters with Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness.

Depp’s second directorial feature, Modi follows a few days in the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. Riccardo Scamarcio stars in the titular role alongside Antonia Desplat, Al Pacino and Stephen Graham. Backdropped by Paris in the middle of World War II, the film focuses on the painter and sculptor as he grapples with his artistic freedom, pride and class-based snobbery while searching for recognition.

It was, Depp revealed at the movie’s press conference Tuesday, Al Pacino who urged the actor — or in this case, director — to take it on.

‘Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness’ Review: Johnny Depp’s Broad, Busy Modigliani Biopic
Image
Celebrated in time for his distinctively lanky, almond-eyed interpretations of the human form, the Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani died in 1920 at the age of just 35, tubercular and destitute and celebrated for very little indeed. At 61, Johnny Depp has both handily outlived Modigliani and outranked him in terms of antemortem celebrity. Yet there’s more than a twinge of empathy for that most irresistible of archetypes — the great, iconoclastic artist under-appreciated in his own time — running through “Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness,” an ostensibly free-spirited Modigliani biopic that marks the embattled star’s first directorial outing in nearly 30 years. Broad in tone and narrow in scope, the film is in thrall to the idea of creating art outside mainstream financial and aesthetic models, though its structure and outlook are not unfamiliar.

Often jovial despite its tragic true-life trappings, and considerably more accessible than its unwieldy full title suggests,...

‘Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness’ Review: Johnny Depp’s Return to Directing Yields a Bland Biopic of a Tortured Artist
Image
Johnny Depp hasn’t taken a directorial credit on a feature film (his 50-minute music video “Unloveable” doesn’t count) since he presented The Brave in Cannes in 1997, and that did not go well. Given that unhappy experience, you have to wonder what it was about Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness — a portrait of Amedeo Modigliani, a painter and sculptor famous for his talent as well as his taste for drugs, debauchery and scandalizing the straights — might have lured the actor to pick up the virtual megaphone again.

Perhaps Depp saw in Modigliani a kindred spirit? After all, Depp too is famous for his talent but also his proclivity for indulgence, which was brought into an especially glaring, unflattering light over the course of his bitter courtroom battle with his ex, Amber Heard. Still, there are many other wild, druggy geniuses or genius-adjacent types he could have...

Journalists Nix Johnny Depp San Sebastian ‘Modi’ Junket & Coverage Over Lack Of Access
Image
A dozen journalists who were due to interview Johnny Depp on new film Modi at the San Sebastian Film Festival on Tuesday walked out of the junket in protest after the publicists running the event tried to shoehorn them all into a single shortened roundtable session.

Saying that such a format is unworkable, the journalists said they would be boycotting coverage of the film. The action marks a further escalation of growing discontent among the international film press corp. over lack of access to talent launching their films at festivals, which was first signalled at Venice.

The journalists had originally been expecting to interview Depp alongside cast members Riccardo Scamarcio and Antonia Desplat for 15 minutes in groups of six at the junket run by Dda.

Italian freelance journalist Marco Consoli, who is leading the protest, said they agreed to the format even if it were not their preferred option.

“We all wanted Johnny Depp,...

As such, after that much-publicized and -mocked trial between the two, Depp has been pushing through with his career. Journalists Abandon Johnny Depp Junket in San Sebastian as Row Over Press Access Escalates
Image
A group of international journalists abandoned a press junket for the Johnny Depp film “Modi” at the San Sebastian Film Festival on Tuesday in the latest escalation of a growing row from within the industry over press access to talent.

Variety understands that 12 journalists working for various international publications had been invited to take part in the interviews for the buzzy film, directed by Depp and launching at the Spanish festival. Understandably, Depp was the star attraction and the individual everyone wanted to speak to, but according to Italian freelancer writer Marco Consoli the group was offered a roundtable with the actor, plus his co-stars Riccardo Scamarcio and Antonia Desalt, with an allocation of just 15 minutes for each of two tables of six journalists.

“The pairing of talent has been happening for some years now and makes our job more and more challenging,” says Consoli. “Because most of the time,...

Johnny Depp Addresses Amber Heard Trial as ‘Modi’ Lands in San Sebastian: “We’ve All Been Through Things. Maybe Yours Didn’t Turn Into a Soap Opera”
Image
Johnny Depp has landed in San Sebastian with his Modi cast and made a thinly veiled reference to the legal frenzy surrounding his public split from Amber Heard, which he described as “a soap opera.”

The star, widely considered a controversial figure in Hollywood after his and Heard’s heavily publicized defamation trial, will premiere his second directorial feature on the Spanish coast. The film Modi — Three Days on the Wing of Madness follows a few days in the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.

Depp said at the presser, likening his bumpy life to that of Modigliani’s, “Each [character] has their story because I’m sure we can say that I’ve been through number of things here and there. … Maybe yours didn’t turn into a soap opera. I mean, literally, televised,” he said, prompting laughs from the packed room of reporters.

“But we all go through what we go through.

Johnny Depp Says His Life Turned ‘Into a Soap Opera’ as He Debuts First Directorial Effort in 27 Years: It Was ‘Televised, in Fact’
Image
During a San Sebastian press conference for his latest directorial outing, “Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness,” Johnny Depp reflected on the nearly three decades since his last feature outing, 1997’s much-maligned “The Brave.”

Asked to compare his own experiences with those of his film’s protagonist — the bohemian artist Amedeo Modigliani — Depp said both of them have had to earn their stripes.

“Sure, we can say that I’ve been through a number of things here and there, but I’m alright,” he said.

Depp then seemed to allude to his recent legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, saying, “I think we’ve all been through a number of things, ultimately… Maybe yours didn’t turn into a soap opera, televised in fact, but we all experience and go through what we go through.”

Johnny Depp On How Al Pacino Persuaded Him To Direct ‘Modi – Three Days On The Wing Of Madness’: “When Pacino Speaks, You Listen” — San Sebastian
Image
Johnny Depp received an enthusiastic welcome this afternoon as he returned to Spain’s San Sebastian Film Festival, where he will debut his latest directorial effort, Modi – Three Days On The Wing Of Madness.

Depp arrived in Spain last night, where he was met with cheering fans outside the city’s Maria Cristina Hotel. This afternoon he appeared in front of a largely starstruck press corps with his Modi cast and collaborators, including Antonia Desplat and Riccardo Scamarcio.

Opening the session, Depp told the journalists in the room that he was first approached about the project by veteran actor Al Pacino.

“I got a very strange phone call from Al Pacino who said ‘Do remember this Modigliani project?’ and he said I should direct it,” Depp said. “For some reason, Al saw me driving this strange machine. And when Pacino speaks, you listen, so I ran with it. But...
