Comedy fans, including David Letterman, got a rare look at the unreleased documentary Dave Chappelle: Live in Real Life at the 23rd annual Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival on Aug. 8. The screening of the film, which chronicled the comic’s beloved cornfield comedy shows during the pandemic, was followed by an even rarer audience talkback. Initially titled Dave Chappelle: This Time This Place, the doc originally premiered at a packed Radio City Music Hall in 2021 during the first live Tribeca Festival since the Covid-19 lockdown. Fallout over trans jokes from his controversial Netflix special The Closer reportedly derailed distribution. In response, Chappelle did a special tour featuring both the doc and a comedy show. The documentary remains unavailable to the general public.

In 2022, Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli resurrected their duo, Black Star, for their first album in 24 years, No Fear of Time. Now, the duo has announced the album is being released for the first time on vinyl and CD starting November 22nd via Rhymesayers.
Released in May 2022 exclusively on the podcast platform Luminary (and later made available via Bandcamp), No Fear of Time is a nine-song album featuring production from Madlib and guest appearances by Black Thought and Yummy Bingham. Talib Kweli and J. Rawls appeared on The Tonight Show to perform “Native Sons” with the help of house band the Roots. The song comes off the pair’s joint LP, The Confidence Of Knowing, out today.

The show will take place on January 17th, 2025 at the Wu Tsai Theater in David Geffen Hall, the home of the New York Philharmonic. As of publishing, the on-sale date isn’t listed on the event page, but the suggested ticket price is $35.

Between Pusha T, Kendrick Lamar, Anthony Fantano, and many more, we’ve heard some pretty good Drake disses over the years. But now, Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) is giving everyone a run for their money with a new diss of epic proportions. Evoking the literal collapse of modern civilization to drive his point home, the seasoned rapper said that Drizzy’s output is less “hip-hop” and more like shopping at Target.
The comments came during Bey’s recent appearance on the fashion podcast The Cutting Room Floor when host, Recho Omondi, asked point-blank if he considered Drake “hip-hop.” After a pause — and a begrudging “Why are you doing this to me?” — Bey unleashed his opinion: “Drake is pop to me. In the sense, like, if I was in Target in Houston and I heard a Drake song… it feels like a lot of his music is compatible with shopping.

Louis Cato, who took over from Jon Batiste as bandleader for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, is getting to drop his sophomore record.
Cato is releasing Reflections on August 11.
Cato has been with the CBS late-night show since its inception and took over from Batiste at the start of its eighth season, after filling in last summer.
Colbert called him “very humble”.
“He’s a musical genius. He can play basically every instrument over there. Give him an afternoon, he’ll learn how to play Mozart on a shoehorn,” the late-night host.
Reflections, which features the eponymous title track (see below), was recorded at Sugar Mountain Studios in Brooklyn, New York and was engineered by Jack DeBoe, who produced the record with Cato.
Cato studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and has played with the likes of John Legend, Talib Kweli, A Tribe Called Quest, Jack White and Bobby McFerrin.
Cato is releasing Reflections on August 11.

Talib Kweli and Madlib dropped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for the late-night debut of “Air Quotes,” one of the standout tracks from the rapper-producer team’s recently released collaborative album, Liberation 2.

Last July, Minneapolis’ First Avenue club cancelled a Chappelle comedy show due to the backlash.
The venue apologised to the community for booking Chappelle and vowed to keep the club a “safe space”, reports ‘Variety’.
“I guess apparently they had made a pledge to the public at large that they would make their club a safe space for all people, and that they would ban anything they deemed transphobic,” he said on the podcast.
“This is a wild stance for an artistic venue to take, especially one that’s historically a punk rock venue.”
Chappelle ended up playing Minneapolis at a different venue, the Varsity Theatre, which attracted large groups of protesters.

Warner Music Group announced Monday that it has partnered with Roku to launch three, genre-based Fast channels, exclusively on The Roku Channel, the platform’s free streaming service.
The new channels – Wmx Pop, Wmx Rock, and Wmx Hip-Hop – are free to stream on The Roku Channel, through the service’s Live TV Guide.
Each of the channels will feature music videos and concerts from Warner Music’s catalog of artists as well as original programming from the company’s media brands, including Uproxx, HipHopDX, Songkick, Cover Nation, The Pit and Lasso Nation.

Academy and Grammy Award-winning artist Jon Batiste is leaving ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ after seven seasons, Colbert announced Thursday night on the show.
He’s exiting to “pursue personal and professional interests”. Louis Cato, who has served as interim bandleader this summer, will take over on a permanent basis and Colbert’s band, which previously had been called “Stay Human” under Batiste’s direction, will be renamed ‘The Late Show Band’, reports ‘Variety’.
Cato will take over permanently when the show returns for its eighth season on Tuesday, September 6.
“Louis has done a great job this summer, and he is very humble, so he won’t say this. But I will. He’s a musical genius,” Colbert said.
“He can play basically every instrument over there. Give him an afternoon, he’ll learn how to play Mozart on a shoehorn.”
Cato, has been with “The Late Show” since its relaunch under Colbert.

The man accused of storming a stage and tackling Dave Chappelle during a performance at the Hollywood Bowl was charged with four misdemeanor crimes Thursday after the Los Angeles District Attorney said the onstage attack didn’t quality as a felony and referred the case to the City Attorney.
