Zombie Horror Unleashed: Netflix Southeast Asia Unveils ‘The Elixir’ and ‘Ziam’
Image
Netflix is doubling down on Southeast Asian genre content with two zombie horror films that promise to reinvent the subgenre with distinctive local flavors, the company revealed during the ongoing Apac film showcase in Tokyo.

Malobika Banerji, senior director of content for Southeast Asia at Netflix, unveiled first looks at “The Elixir” from Indonesia and “Ziam” from Thailand, both slated for 2025 releases.

“The Elixir,” directed by acclaimed Indonesian horror auteur Kimo Stamboel, centers on a fractured family fighting to escape a zombie outbreak triggered by a traditional Javanese herbal elixir. The film stars Mikha Tambayong, Eva Celia, and Donny Damara, with Stamboel bringing his signature immaculate visual style and penchant for gore to the project.

Stamboel comes with horror credentials, including his work as part of The Mo Brothers directing duo and his recent box office success “Dancing Village: The Curse Begins,” which attracted over four million theatrical viewers.

For “Ziam,...

Continuing its run of slate launches globally, Netflix unveiled new Indonesian originals premiering on its platform this year.

The streamer is working on its first collaboration with director and comedian Ernest Prakasa, titled The Actor (Lupa Daratan). The comedy-drama film is about an egocentric actor who is on the cusp of landing the lead role in a prestige biopic, but suddenly finds himself stripped of his acting abilities. The film stars Vino G. Bastian, Agus Kuncoro and Dea Panendra.

Netflix will also launch its first zombie film from Indonesia, The Elixir, from accomplished horror director Kimo Stamboel. Previously announced with the working title of Abadi Nan Jaya, the film tells the story of a potion that ends up triggering a zombie outbreak due to the ambition of a herbal medicine company’s owner. The Elixir stars Donny Damara, Mikha Tambayong, Eva Celia, Dimas Anggara, Kiki Narendra and Marthino Lio.

Film Review: Midnight In Bali (2025) by Razka Robby Ertanto
Image
Exactly a year after the world premiere of his drama “Yohanna” here in Rotterdam, Indonesian director Razka Robby Ertanto is back with another attempt at a drama involving strong women. “Midnight in Bali” which screens in Harbour section of IFFR, is a work very different from what Ertanto has done so far. The story lets us into the life of transgender woman Bulan (Juan Bio One) who has found and lost her big love, and is determined to change that.

Midnight in Bali is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam

Bulan is optimistic by nature, and there is barely anything that can shake her good mood. Barely doesn’t mean never, so even she occasionally can’t help but feel the blues. By day she doesn’t do much but chain smoke and contemplate this and that, by night she is at the local gay bar performing on stage or attending numerous parties.

‘The Big 4’ – Action Movie on Netflix – And, Action!
Image
The Big Four is an action/adventure/comedy movie directed by Timo Tjahjanto starring Abimana Aryasatya, Putri Marino, Arie Kriting, Lutesha and Kristo Immanuel.

An entertaining, action-packed movie that has the virtue of not taking itself too seriously. Two hour and half of over-the-top action and comedic moments.

Premise

A by-the-book female detective teams up with four down-on-their-luck assassins to investigate her father’s murder.

About the Movie

In the first scene a child is left in the care of an orphanage, and we will soon find out that it is in fact an organ farm. What follows is a blood-fest of action, with kicking and punching, shooting and heads being blown off. And just like that, the tone is set in this feature about a team of vigilantes trained by the Big Boss, Petrus (the father), who will combat any and all injustices.

The Big 4 (2022)

The excess action and violence,...

Film Review: Lovely Man (2011) by Teddy Soeriaatmadja
By Kyriacos Kyriacou

With the questioning title “Lovely Man,” and the main characters being a transvestite prostitute and his religious Islamic daughter, being intriguing enough, the movie takes us in a human reconciliation journey, in the streets of the capital of Indonesia, during a single night.

Cahaya (Raihaanun), a 19-years-old girl with strong Islamic values, arrives in Jakarta seeking her long lost father Sailful (Donny Damara). To her surprise, she finds what she is looking for in the face of a stranger, a transvestite man named Ipuy, working as a prostitute in the streets at night. Hesitant at the beginning, they wander in the streets of Jakarta until the dawn and they end up in an encounter of self-realization and soul salvation for both of them.

Teddy Soeriaatmadja, who writes and pens the movie, unfolds the story at a slow pace. It takes place during one night and focuses on...

"A Separation" Wins Big at the Asian Film Awards
Congralutations to Andy Lau (representing Hong Kong's Oscar submission A Simple Life) and Eugene Domingo (the star of The Philippine's Oscar submission Woman in a Septic Tank) who won the People's Choice Award for Actor and Actress at the 6th Annual Asian Film Awards.

They look so happy. The Oscars are long over but somehow it's comforting to know that people hold new trophies every day of the year for something or other and not all of them are dreaming of Oscar. And not all awards bodies are concerned with whether or not Oscar voters are watching.

It was a big night for A Separation (which we were just talking about) which took home the top prize and three others. The craft categories were mostly split between Wu Xia and The Flying Swords of Dragon Gale, neither of which have come to Us cinemas.

The acting awards were all over...
