Prime Video's New Action Series Dividing Audiences & Critics Is Tearing Up Global Streaming Chart
Image
Prime Video's latest action series that's dividing audiences and critics is tearing up the global streaming chart just one week after its release. Amazon's streaming service is becoming a central hub for a number of action TV series. This includes new shows in their lineup, like the forthcoming spy thriller Butterfly, to established franchises, like the upcoming Reacher season 4.

But one new show, The Assassin, is starting to make waves on the platform; according to Flixpatrol, the week-old series is the Number 1 show on Prime Video in the UK for August 1, 2025. The series has managed to surpass the universally popular drama The Summer I Turned Pretty, despite some very polarizing reviews between critics and audiences.

What The Assassin's Success Says About Its Splintered Reviews The Prime Video Series' Fractured Critic & Audience Reception Explained

Created by brothers Harry and Jack Williams, The Assassin follows Keeley Hawes as Julie, a retired assassin residing in Greece.

After 10 Years, Has the Fate of an Iconic 93% Rt British Crime Series Finally Been Decided?
Image
Over ten years ago, writers Harry and Jack Williams, famed for their work on the likes of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's critically acclaimed Fleabag and later the Jamie Dornan-led The Tourist, brought to the BBC one of the most underrated British crime dramas of the 21st century. Before it turned into the Tchéky Karyo-led spin-off, Baptiste, The Missing was one of the most chilling productions on the Beeb, and even earned itself an enormous 93% from critics and 90% from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Such was the show's incredible success, many have since called for a return, although the brothers Williams have been keeping themselves far too preoccupied... until, perhaps, now. In an interview with Radio Times, the brothers gave fans their most promising tease yet that a return to the cold world of The Missing could soon be on its way. "Yeah, we still talk to Tchéky a lot,...

Jamie Dornan's 96% Rotten Tomatoes British Drama Series Gets a Disappointing Season 3 Update
Image
Sometimes, the power of demand is too strong. For The Touristshowrunners Harry and Jack Williams and series star Jamie Dornan, the plan was to always produce just one season of the thrilling black comedy, only for a reported audience of 11.4 million viewers to force the hand of higher-ups and the green light to be given to a second season. Two years later, in early 2024, the second season debuted to similar success, leaving fans desperate to know if more was on the horizon ever since.

However, unlike previously, it seems that the showrunners, Dornan, and co are remaining steadfast in their belief that the twisting tale told in The Tourist should remain contained. In an exclusive interview with Radio Times, the Williams brothers gave a disappointing update on a potential third season, despite the second ending on a cliffhanger, saying, "Jamie's great and we loved doing it. I think it'd be tough.

The Assassin
Image
Streaming on: Prime Video

Episodes viewed: 4 of 6

The Assassin starts with an assassination. Several of them, in fact. The series opens with a masked killer making their way through a group of unlucky guards: so far, so typical of the hitman genre. But then the mask comes off. It’s at this point we're introduced to Julie (Keeley Hawes), who does something we don’t often see assassins do: check a pregnancy test, squirrelled away in her stealth suit. Then we jump forward a few decades, finding that Julie is now retired in Greece, facing off against unruly local kids kicking a ball at her, rather than a shower of bullets and grenades. But this former killer-for-hire has lost none of her edge, and it turns out she's not quite shaken off the people who want her dead either.

Hawes steers the twists and turns that follow equally as well,...

Freddie Highmore Is Back to His British Roots (and Loving It) in ‘The Assassin’
Image
Freddie Highmore has called London home his whole life, but you wouldn’t know it from his portfolio.

The 33-year-old actor, a former child star thanks to his titular role in Tim Burton‘s 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, has spent a good chunk of the last decade across the Atlantic. Shooting entirely in Vancouver, his rise to fame is best associated with the medical drama The Good Doctor from 2017 to 2024 or the psychological horror series Bates Motel in the years before that.

“I had such an incredible experience that feels so unique and will probably never happen again,” Highmore tells The Hollywood Reporter about his TV adventures abroad. “But at the same time, there was definitely an excitement to do something back in the U.K.”

He adds: “It did always feel like, ‘Oh, I should get back at some point.'”

The Brit is back with a...

'The Tourist' Season 2 Review — Netflix Thriller Remains Killer
Image
When The Tourist first premiered on Max in 2022, its smartly written ending felt like the perfect conclusion to the puzzling, dark comedy. The neo-Western reminiscent of Coen Brothers classics like Fargo and Blood Simple about one man’s amnesia-filled romp across the Australian outback was a captivating odyssey blending action, mystery, and dark humor. But despite showrunners Harry and Jack Williams and series star Jamie Dornan, insisting it was never meant to be more than one season, an abundance of critical acclaim and an astounding audience of 11.4 million viewers following its BBC run proved there was more story to tell. With The Tourist making its anticipated U.S. debut on Netflix this month, Season 2 tonally hits all the right notes for a uniquely twisted, action-thriller that is genuinely fun and engrossing.

The Tourist Season 2 Review: Jamie Dornan's Thriller Doesn't Hold Onto Its Lightning In A Bottle
Image
The Tourist season 2 relocates to Ireland with a darker narrative twist. Season 2 doubles down on thrills and dark humor, but loses some originality. The show's leading cast adds charm and appeal, despite narrative flaws.

In the wake of The Tourist’s well-plotted first season, it was easy to want more. From Jamie Dornan’s effortless charm to series' writers Harry and Jack Williams' edge-of-your-seat plot twists, the six-episode show managed to bottle lightning. Although the Williams brothers didn't set out to make more than a miniseries, BBC One renewed the surprise hit. Despite Dornan and Danielle Macdonald's palpable chemistry, The Tourist season 2 sounds about as appealing as the sophomore outing of Big Little Lies did: Great in theory, but, in reality, purely a (Laura Dern) meme factory.

6/10

Why The Tourist's Rotten Tomatoes Critics & Audiences Scores Are So Divided
Image
Critics praise The Tourist for its thrilling and entertaining storytelling, giving it an impressive overall 95% Rotten Tomatoes score. Audiences, however, disagree with critics and find The Tourist to be flat and tedious and the plot to be absurd and convoluted, giving it a 60% score. Despite differing opinions, The Tourist is a hit on Netflix and remains in its Top 10 TV Shows.

Critics and audience's scores on Rotten Tomatoes don't always line up on every project, but the consensus on the BBC show The Tourist is shockingly divided. Created by brothers Harry and Jack Williams, The Tourist is a drama thriller series centered on an amnesiac Irishman (Jamie Dornan), who woke up in Australia with no memory and gradually put the pieces of his life and identity back together as his dark past continued to catch up with him. The Tourist cast also includes Danielle McDonald as Probationary Constable Helen Chambers,...

His death was announced by his family on a GoFundMe page last month, but has more recently gained widespread attention. His brother Paul R. Williams confirmed the cause of death to The New York Times for an obituary posted today.

Following his initial stints in the Waitresses and Psychedelic Furs – both bands were early MTV favorites with videos often spotlighting the playful Williams, and he would reunite with the Furs throughout his life – the saxophonist went on to lead his own jazz ensembles including the influential, Grammy-nominated acid jazz group Liquid Soul in the 1990s.

A statement posted by his family on the GoFundMe page reads, in part, “Until the end, Mars’ inexhaustible humor and energy,...
