Haut Et Court & Good Chaos Team On ‘Paris-Hollywood’ Film Rights
Image
Paris-based Haut et Court and London-based Good Chaos have partnered to acquire the film rights to Paris-Hollywood, the debut novel from writer and critic Cécile Mury.

The novel is the story of a French journalist and an English-speaking movie star. The two companies have said they plan to adapt the novel into a feature film, with the aim of “blending the sensibilities of both Franco and Anglo rom-coms.”

“Paris-Hollywood is not only a charming and winning read, but it also digs intelligently into the nature of love and the limits we put on ourselves before falling in love,” Mike Goodridge, CEO of Good Chaos, said in a statement. “We are so excited to be building this movie with our dear friends at Haut et Court and make a classic European romcom.”

Paris-Hollywood was one of the buzzier titles at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair, where it was picked up...

Hellbound is the most recent Korean-language hit to make it into the U.S. Netflix Top Ten, and to top Netflix’s global (self-reported) charts. Prepare yourself for heaven-and-hell dramas, existential questions, terrifying monsters, human dilemmas, angels, demons and much, much more.

The Leftovers

Where to watch: HBO Max

Like Hellbound, The Leftovers is an existential drama that starts with an incomprehensible, potentially divine metaphysical event. In Hellbound, it is the realization that creatures that seem a lot like angels and demons exist and are coming to kill people. In The Leftovers, it is the sudden disappearance of 2% of the world’s population. Lesser shows—or at least more plot-driven shows...

‘The Virtues,’ ‘Just for Today,’ ‘Mytho’ Take Top Honors at Series Mania
Shane Meadows in This Is England (2006)
Three series from strong creative voices – Shane Meadows’ “The Virtues,” Nir Bergman’s “Just for Today” and the Fabrice Gobert-directed, and Netflix-backed, “Mytho” – shared major honors at an enlarged, hectic 10th Series Mania, now firmly established in festival, industry and discussion forum terms as one of the major TV events in Europe.

A story of redemption, unexpected love and imperfect fatherhood – a growing trend among drama series, Eurodata TV’s Avril Blondelot said at Series Mania – “The Virtues” won the Series Mania Grand Prix and best actor for Stephen Graham, a standout in Meadows’ “This is England,” who puts in profoundly affecting performance, by common consensus, as Joseph, a man who travels to Ireland to confront the demons left by a childhood in its care-system.

“From the first frame, ‘The Virtues’ moves you with its deep humanity. Masterfully directed, written and acted, the show is a prime example...

Federation Entertainment Boards Fabrice Gobert’s Drama Series ‘Mytho’ (Exclusive)
Pascal Breton’s Federation Entertainment has acquired international rights to “Mytho,” a series drama which will be directed by Fabrice Gobert, the creator of Canal Plus’s hit supernatural series “The Returned.”

The series is being produced by Bruno Nahon at Unité de Production. The seasoned French producer is behind a flurry of critically acclaimed films, notably Cyril Mennegun’s “Louise Wimmer,” Nabil Ayouch’s “Razzia,” and series such as “Ainsi soient-ils” (“Churchmen”), which is one of Arte’s most popular series.

“Mytho,” which comprises six one-hour episodes, will topline French actress Marina Hands (“Tell No One,” “Lady Chatterley”) as Elvira, a loving and caring wife who finds herself on the edge of burnout. 'K.O.': Film Review
K.O. (2017)
Less of a K.O. than a Wtf, writer-director Fabrice Gobert’s second feature stars French pretty boy Laurent Lafitte (Elle) as a TV executive caught in a Mobius strip-style plot that has him dying, resurrecting, falling in and out of love with Chiara Mastroianni, and acting like a d-bag for most of the film’s two-hour running time.

It’s a lot to ask an audience to get hooked on, especially with a lead character who really has nothing to commend except his perfectly etched beard, but Gobert — who created the well-regarded supernatural TV series Les Revenants — manages to keep the...

Cannes 2017: who's in the running?
Screen investigates which films from around the world could launch on the Croisette, including on opening night.

With just over a month to go before the line-up for this year’s Cannes Film Festival is unveiled in Paris, Croisette predictions and wish lists are hitting the web thick and fast.

Screen’s network of correspondents and contributors around the world have been putting out feelers to get a sense of what might or might not make it to the Palais du Cinéma or one of the parallel sections.

Just like the Oscars, this year’s festival is likely to unfold amid a politically-charged atmosphere. Beyond Trump and the rise of populism across the globe, France will be digesting the result of its own presidential election on May 7. Against this background, the festival will be feting its 70th edition.

The Returned: Creator Teases Season Three Possibility
Season two of the French series The Returned debuts on Sundance TV on Halloween, but is there more story to tell? The creator of the series, Fabrice Gobert, spoke about the series with Digital Spy, and he is not against a third season.

"I think there can be a third, but season two is really constructed as a mirror to season one. There are a lot of questions, a lot of mysteries, a lot of stories that began in season one, and those had to be completed in season two.  So we can imagine easily season three, but I think it would be different from the two first chapters."

Two members of the cast, Pierre Perrier and Jenna Thiam, also teased the possibility of a third season. However, season two will give fans a satisfactory ending.

How did series 1 of The Returned end? Read our handy refresher
Warning: This article contains spoilers that some readers may prefer to avoid.

Good news - The Returned is back, with its beautiful people, Gallic drama and Mogwai chords. Bad news - the first series aired in 2013 and, two years on, all we can remember is "the Lake Pub".

Great news - Digital Spy has prepared a handy guide, for anyone looking to refresh their memories ahead of tonight's (superb) series two premiere:

The basics

The dead have begun returning to life in a small French mountain town. But these are no flesh-chomping zombies - beyond a ferocious appetite, the 'Returned' appear perfectly healthy and normal.

The town, though, is plagued by other strange phenomena - power outages, the reservoir's water level dropping dramatically and strange marks appearing on the bodies of both the living and dead.

What happened in series one's finale?

Remember Toni (Grégory Gadebois), manager of the Lake Pub?...

The Returned series 2: the delay, Us remake, and answers
facebook

twitter

google+

The Returned series 2 arrives on More4 in the UK tonight, Friday the 16th of October. We spoke to its creators and cast…

Fabrice Gobert, the French creator of supernatural drama The Returned, speaks good English. An inevitability of using a second language though, is the odd grammatical slip. One such slip made by Gobert at the press launch for The Returned series two is too perfect to let pass by. A pitfall of writing fantasy TV, Gobert said, is that “you can lost yourself”.

Add a capital letter to the ‘l’ word, and you can say that again.

During its enviably long run, Lost became both the high and low benchmark for atmospheric, existentially fraught TV dramas. Its early seasons gripped viewers, but its later runs frustrated many by failing to achieve the perfect ratio of mysteries to answers. That’s the tricky challenge The Returned is facing in series two.

There could be a third series of The Returned, says creator Fabrice Gobert
The Returned is back for a second series - but will these next eight episodes bring the story to a close?

Fabrice Gobert, creator of the chilling French drama, told press including Digital Spy that he is not ruling out a third series.

"I think there can be a third," he said. "But season two is really constructed as a mirror to season one. There are a lot of questions, a lot of mysteries, a lot of stories that began in season one, and those had to be completed in season two.

"So we can imagine easily season three, but I think it would be different from the two first chapters."

Gobert had planned the climax of The Returned to the very final image. However, while that image does still feature in series two's finale, it is no longer the last shot.

"I had it [in my head] when I wrote season one,...

The Returned cast weren't fans of the Us remake: 'It was bad, so I stopped watching'
The Us remake of chilling French drama The Returned ran for just one season - and it's fair to say the team behind the original show were not fans.

Pierre Perrier (Simon) and Jenna Thiam (Lena) told press including Digital Spy that they were not impressed by what little they saw of the American series.

"I saw ten minutes of it," Perrier admitted. "It was the same shots. But... bad. So I stopped it."

"I've seen it very briefly," Thiam added. "But there's no artistic movement behind it. It's just, 'Oh this was a big hit, let's copy it'. - it's a different way of thinking."

Fabrice Gobert, creator of the original Les Revenants, confirmed that he played no role in the Us remake, but did speak briefly with its showrunner, Lost veteran Carlton Cuse.

"They asked me if I wanted to participate, but I couldn't, because I was writing season two [of the French show]," he explained.

The Returned is back for series 2 - but why has it taken 2 years?
Spooky French drama The Returned is back for a second series - but why has it taken over 2 years for new episodes to reach our screens?

In fact, there's been a 3-year gap since the first series aired in its naive France - but creator Fabrice Gobert told press including Digital Spy that the French television industry is simply not equipped to work at a faster pace.

"It's a problem in France. and we have to solve it," he said. "As a spectator, when I love a series, I expect it to have 10 episodes every year. I would be very frustrated if Game of Thrones stopped for three years.

"So we know that we have to improve that in France, everybody knows that, but it's difficult to imagine a system where we have to make 10 episodes every year.

"In France, you have to write every script before shooting. So you...

Fancy a drink in The Lake Pub? The Returned's infamous tavern is real
If you're a fan of spooky French series The Returned, we've got some exciting news for you - the Lake Pub is real.

The drinking establishment - and its curiously Anglicised name - became a bit of a mini-obsession for UK viewers when Channel 4 screened the first series of The Returned in 2013.

Both the pub and the diner that feature on the show are real locations, near Annecy in south-eastern France where the series films.

"They are real places - we didn't invent them," The Returned creator Fabrice Gobert told press including Digital Spy.

The Returned Season 2 Trailer Arrives
The Fabrice Gobert created supernatural show The Returned was a big favorite around these parts when it premiered a few years back. A slow cooker, with atmosphere and Wtf moments aplenty, the show revolved around the residents of a provincial French town who had to deal with loved ones returning from the dead.. but were not undead in the modern zombie sense... they were seemingly fully alive, and with no memory of their deaths. It's as if they just woke up from a nap. More Twin Peaks than The Walking Dead, Gobert and company gave us one killer first season and then went off to craft season 2, which, if you live in France, has been three years in the making, and two for us...

Toronto Review: With Season 2 of 'The Returned,' the Best Mystery on TV is Back
In the pantheon of recent television shows steeped in mystery more than solutions — from "Lost" to the first season of "True Detective" — no recent program has recaptured the creepy elegance of "Twin Peaks" better than "The Returned" ("Les Revenants"). With two episodes previewed this week in the Toronto International Film Festival's Primetime section, the show continues to provide a unique narrative experience that propels viewers to think things through, even if they still don't add up. Read More: Coming Back from the Dead, French-Style The French series, the first season of which made its way to North America two years ago on Sundance TV, explores the bizarre circumstances under which the dead come back to life in a small town, unaware of their postmortem state or why they came back. Tiff 2015’s tv-focused Primetime Programme lineup announced
The rise in critical acclaim for television shows over the years has been well-documented, with a corresponding rise in interest among viewers to discuss and analyse television the way films are at festivals. While festivals dedicated to television shows, such as Atx and PaleyFest, are on the rise, film festivals still outweigh them.

For its 2015 incarnation, however, the Toronto International Film Festival will be doing something unique, beginning a programme dedicated to television. Titled the Primetime Programme, the section of the festival will conduct screenings and Q&A sessions just like the films that play at Tiff, focusing on specific episodes of shows instead. The lineup for the inagural Primetime programme has now been announced, and can be seen below.

Casual Season 1, Episodes 1 and 2, created by Zander Lehmann and directed by Jason Reitman, making its World Premiere

Festival favourite Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air) directs this wonderfully endearing...

Drew Barrymore in Scream (1996)
Hannibal, Bates Motel and more: 7 horror films and their TV off-cuts
Drew Barrymore in Scream (1996)
Just in time for Halloween, MTV has ordered a TV show based on the Scream horror franchise - though the Ghostface killer who so memorably terrorised the victims of Wes Craven's film series will notably be absent.

It seems that horror cinema remains a rich vein for television producers to tap. On top of the Scream news, it was reported back in August that NBC is working on its own version of Satanic thriller The Devil's Advocate.

But translating big-screens scares for television can be a tricky process and only a few movie chillers have survived the move in one piece.

Friday the 13th: The Series (1987-1990)

This spooky show bore little resemblance to the familiar series of slasher films, with producer Frank Mancuso, Jr. taking the name and little else. Like Scream's Ghostface, the most memorable aspect of the Friday the 13th pictures - hulking hockey-mask-sporting...

‘The Returned’: the case for a thinking person’s supernatural story
The Returned (original French title: Les Revenants)

Written by Fabrice Gobert, Emmannuelle Carrère, Fabien Adda, Nathalie Saugeon

Directed by Fabrice Gobert (episodes 1-4) and Frédéric Mermoud (episodes 5-8)

Premiered on November 26th 2012 on Canal+

Satisfying the hunger of movie and television consumers in dire need of original content grows more difficult with each and every passing year. Not only do the people who produce content want to release more of the same, but the very fact of the matter is that nearly every story has already been told. What bold, creative new ideas can emerge in this early 21st century, where the quantity of the content grows exponentially at a dizzying rate? Making a television show that looks, sounds, and most importantly feels like no other is no small order. One option is to genre mash; that is, splicing two or more disparate genres together to make something that, while familiar,...

First Casting News for A&E’s The Returned
What if someone you loved died… and then appeared at your door years later? This compelling “what if?” will be at the heart of A&E’s upcoming series, The Returned. Based on the French series of the same name, A&E has ordered a 10-episode first season order of the series, and they have now cast a key character that should please fans of Supernatural and Being Human.

Deadline reports that actor Mark Pellegrino has signed on for a lead role in The Returned. The former Lost co-star will be reunited with Carlton Cuse, who was co-showrunner of Lost and will write and executive produce The Returned. In addition to acting in shows like Supernatural and Being Human, Pellegrino has also appeared in Revolution and Dexter. This time around, Pellegrino will play a father whose children return from the dead:

“Pellegrino will play the rugged Jack, father of 20-year-old twin girls Lena,...

Carlton Cuse and AandE to Bring us The Returned Us Remake
Ok let's recap. 'The Returned' (Aka 'Les Revenants') is a French horror series from Fabrice Gobert, which in turn is based upon Robin Campillo's 2004 French movie 'They Came Back'. ABC's 'Resurrection', although extremely similar in its premise, is based upon the novel 'The Returned' by American author Jason Mott. So if you're still following then AandE have thrown another hat into the mix by ordering a new 10-part Us remake based of 'Les Revenants'. I really don't think Us networks give their American audiences much credit whatsoever when it comes ot foreign imports. The original French series (which will continue later this year) is such a fantastic piece of TV which is incredibly compelling and flawlessly acted why a remake even needs to be considered is beyond me. Instead of plugging money into an unnecessary redo how about reeducating audiences instead.
