A Magnificent Life (Marcel et Monsieur Pagnol), a biopic of French playwright-filmmaker Marcel Pagnol, clearly represents a labor of love for writer-director Sylvain Chomet. His first animated feature since 2010’s The Illusionist, it features the gorgeous style first showcased in 2003’s award-winning The Triplets of Belleville. If its storytelling proves more rudimentary, hewing closely to the stylistic formula endemic to the genre, the ample visual pleasures prove their own reward. Premiering at Cannes, the film should find appreciative audiences in its native France, where its subject is best known.
The story, told in flashback, begins in 1956 Paris, where the 61-year-old Pagnol (voiced by Matthew Gravelle in the English-language version) is despairing that his work has gone out of fashion. Although he intends to give up writing to pursue his hobby of inventing (he’s working on a perpetual-motion machine), he’s asked by a magazine editor to pen a memoir.

More than a year ahead of this installment's premiere on BBC America, creator Chris Chibnall made it clear he was working toward a third and final season. Two new horror adaptations are coming to BBC Radio 4 this Halloween as part of Fright Night, The Stone Tape and The Ring…

The success and curse of the British crime series Broadchurch's first season was how thoroughly it handled its resolution. Joe Miller (Matthew Gravelle) killed young Danny Latimer, he was arrested for it, and slowly, the town began to heal. But the popularity and critical acclaim of its first run of episodes essentially demanded that creator Chris Chibnall dream up a reason for it to continue. The only thing that felt unfinished about Broadchurch's first season was the mysterious Sandbrook case, although that too seemed to have its own kind of end after Alec Hardy (David Tennant) told Ellie Miller (that marvelous Olivia Colman) the truth about the connection between the missing evidence and his wife. But the legacy of Broadchurch's first season wasn't really that it made all that much sense in the end; rather, it was about its eminently bingeable nature, tied together by the extraordinary strength of its acting.

Chris Chibnall has hit back at Broadchurch critics, defending series two's portrayal of the trial process.
In a column for The Guardian, the writer insisted that the ITV thriller's latest episodes - which saw Joe Miller (Matthew Gravelle) on trial for murder - were "devised as the result of months of research and consultation".
"Before we started to plot or write, we researched trials of the past 20 years and attended criminal proceedings," he explained. "Alongside a respected police adviser from the first series, we brought on highly-qualified, experienced and practising members of the legal profession.
"Critics argued the defence wouldn't be allowed to suggest Mark Latimer (Andrew Buchan) as an alternate killer. Our advisers were - and remain (I checked) - adamant on this: if they were defending, they could and would run this approach.
"Others thought the cross-examination of Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) in the witness box was unrealistic: our police adviser told me,...

The morning after screening the first four episodes of the sophomore season of “Broadchurch,” I noted my initial impressions on Twitter, an assessment of which I am only more convinced after a few days of reflection. “Review: ‘Broadchurch,’ Season Two,” I wrote. “Kill it. Kill it with fire.” Having spent the five months since I reviewed the extraordinary first season praising the small-town mystery to everyone who would listen, a bit of hyperbole seems only fair: shunning the unassuming precision of its debut for high dudgeon and overwrought dramatics, the crime drama, which returns to BBC America Wednesday, is now but a shell of its former self. Read: “‘Gracepoint’ vs. ‘Broadchurch,’ or the Problem with Remakes” The new season courts the danger of high expectations from the opening minutes, setting the table for the trial of accused child molester and murderer Joe Miller (Matthew Gravelle) with a superb, fleet-footed sequence...

On its second go-around, Broadchurch has split viewers and critics - some were left underwhelmed by the new series of Chris Chibnall's coastal crime thriller, while others were still hooked every Monday night.
So why the divide? I'm of the opinion that Broadchurch 2 was neither an outright success or a complete misfire. Some elements (both old and new) worked, while others fell flat.

The actor - who plays the killer on ITV's crime drama - said that it was "a strange experience" working on the show's second series as he was kept away from the other actors.
He told The Sun: "It was a strange experience because I was kept away from the other actors for the first scenes. But I then found I was keeping myself away from people quite a bit.
"It worked well because it increased the tension. When we finally filmed the verdict scenes and the actor playing the court clerk said, 'Do you find the defendant, Joseph Michael Miller, guilty or not guilty?' my heart was racing. I felt like I really was on trial.
Gravelle also revealed that the cast filmed both verdicts in order to keep the real outcome a surprise.

At the end of the first series of Broadchurch we finally had the answer to a twisting-turning whodunit.
Joe Miller (Matthew Gravelle), paramedic husband of Di Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman), confessed to the murder of Danny Latimer, and we the viewers saw how it all panned out in an eerie flashback.
What looked like an open and shut case has become something very different in the last seven weeks.
After Joe's shock not guilty plea in the first episode, the failings of the prosecution case - procedural rather than in matters of truth or falsehood - have been unravelled by Sharon Bishop QC (Marianne Jean-Baptiste).
So tenacious has Sharon been, that it seems entirely likely that in next week's finale, Joe Miller could be found not guilty.
Do you think the writers would dare let Joe off the hook for a murder we all saw him commit last series? Vote...
