“You will become someone who cannot make anime”: The Godfather of Anime Didn’t Leave His Legacy for ‘Twins Hinahima’ to Completely Butcher It
Image
Anime has given a lot to the world; there is no doubt that manga and anime have become mainstream sources of entertainment today. However, with the advancements in technology, AI-generated animation is rapidly infiltrating the anime industry.

One example that seems to push for the usage of AI and become the ‘poster’ is the anime Twins Hinahima. There have been many instances where we have seen AI being used.

Himari from Twins Hinahima | Credits: KaKa Technology Studios

Director Iizuka Naomichi (the one behind Twins Hinahima) argues that AI will create new “opportunities” for animators, but his vision ignores a fundamental truth that the anime industry has been built on the efforts of many giants who struggled to portray the best art they could.

Would the giants of anime approve?

There are many greats like Osamu Tezuka, Satoshi Kon, and Hayao Miyazaki who dedicated their lives to anime so future generations...

The Unhinged Christmas Wish List: Gifts Only TV Characters Would Ask For
Image
A Christmas wish list is usually a kid’s thing, but since we’re talking about fictional, completely made-up characters here, why not?

Have you ever thought about what some of your favorite TV characters might like for Christmas?

For some, it’s not too hard to imagine. Others are a little more tricky.

(HBO)

After all, no one thinks Cersei Lannister is pining for a Plantgem Garden in a Box unless it comes with seeds for Water Hemlock or Deadly Nightshade.

Regardless, it’s an interesting and fun thought experiment throughout the holiday season when everyone is going bonkers over Walmart parking spaces and fighting in the ‘Return’ lines.

The Best Depictions of Awful Character Traits We’ve Ever Seen

Be honest with yourselves; awful character traits are the best. Who didn’t tune into Game of Thrones weekly to see what shady malevolence Joffrey Baratheon was up to?

Walter White isn’t the most vile reprobate to ever cross the small screen. He’s practically a household name, cheered and loathed in equal measure.

One of the most powerful and insanely popular scenes in the entire Star Wars saga is when Darth Vader enters a dark, smokey hallway on a Rebel ship and unleashes a hellish slaughter on the crew.

10 Best Anime Doctors Who Left Fans Absolutely Captivated
Image
Anime doctors perform out-of-this-world feats, with supernatural abilities enhancing their talent in medicine. Legendary mangaka Osamu Tezuka's character Black Jack is a compassionate doctor who secretly treats patients. Characters like Dr. Elise and Leorio strive to use their medical skills to help others, despite facing challenges.

In real life, a trip to the doctors office isnt any fun, no matter how cool the doctor in charge is. In anime, the best doctors have fans absolutely captivated with their intensity, intelligence, and ability to heal any injury and cure any disease. Until they break out the needles, scalpels, and other pointy instruments, one imagines it would be great to be their patient.

These doctors use their skills and training to perform out-of-this-world feats, usually ones impossible in real life. Sometimes, they will have supernatural abilities (outside of healing powers) that enhance their natural talent in medicine. But most often, they will simply be performing medicine,...

Tezuka Fans Unimpressed by Black Jack's First Official AI-Generated Manga
Image
Black Jack has unveiled a partially AI-generated chapter to commemorate the manga series' 50th anniversary, originally written by pioneering artist Osamu Tezuka.

Per Comic Natalie, Tezuka Productions revealed the 32-page one-shot chapter, titled Black Jack Kikai no Shinzo - Heartbeat Mark II, at Keio's University Mita Campus in Tokyo, Japan. Heartbeat Mark II is a collaborative project developed by Tezuka Productions and Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, which utilized an AI based on the ChatGPT-4 model trained with the use of Black Jack creator Osamu Tezuka's previous works as a dataset. This is notably the first time an AI-generation tool was used to produce a chapter for the classic manga series.

Most Forgettable Anime By Successful Creators
Image
Famous artists are often highly associated with a single title or franchise. Usually, the one they are associated with is their most successful project or their original breakout hit. However, this means that a lot of their other, equally good work, can get overlooked, as it's rare for an artist to do just one thing for their entire career.

And this is especially true in anime, where many of the medium's most famous creators have worked on many amazing shows and movies that, while fantastic in their own right, don't get the attention they deserve because they're overshadowed by the more famous works made by the creator.

The First Official Teaser for ‘Pluto’ Reveals What Could Be the Best Anime of the Year
Image
Osamu Tezuka is often mentioned along with the title of “Father of Manga” and in many ways, he is, thanks to the prolific nature of his works and the fact that he managed to walk the perfect line between entertainment for kids and profound storytelling that took the medium of manga to an entirely new era. Characters like Astro Boy, Kimba, the White Lion, and Black Jack are still present in the audience’s minds even after so long, and thus the influence of Tezuka cannot be understated. Pluto is a new anime series based on the Astro Boy Universe, and Netflix has released the first official teaser for it.

Pluto is based on a manga of the same name written and illustrated not by Tezuka, who sadly passed away at the age of 60 in 1989, but by Naoki Urasawa, a more contemporary manga artist that has acquired an amazing reputation...

The Newest "Osamu Tezuka" Manga Is Enraging Fans Over AI Concerns
Image
The godfather of anime and manga is still inarguably Osamu Tezuka, who jumpstarted the mediums as many know them several decades ago. His manga works include the iconic Astro Boy, as well as Kimba the White Lion, Dororo, and others. Unfortunately, one of his classic works is being revisited, and the result is rubbing many fans the wrong way.

Black Jack is one of several famous works by Tezuka, with the manga receiving a new chapter for its 50th anniversary. Said chapter will be developed using AI, which has become an increasingly controversial element of manga, anime, and creative fields as a whole. Given the subject matter of the mangaka's most notable franchises, this makes Black Jack a particularly ironic choice to use for AI experimentation. It all sounds like something out of a dystopian hi-tech horror story, and it very well may be.

With the announcement that a new chapter of the classic Black Jack manga by the legendary Osamu Tezuka will be written with the help of a popular generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) program, more fuel has been added to the controversy surrounding AI and the manga industry, which is an extension of the worries caused to creators by the development of AI generative programs.

Jamie's (Sam Heughan) labored breaths opened the season as he struggled to survive after Culloden, lying on the ground and recalling his death match with none other than Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies). Eventually, we all came to realize that Jamie had been lying there for hours, with a dead Black Jack on top of him.  Jamie seemed dead too, but he was eventually found and saved by Rupert (Grant O'Rourke), who had amassed a small group of survivors in a little house. One very important character literally comes to life in Outlander‘s Season 3 premiere, while two others blink out of existence thanks to the Battle of Culloden and its bloody, near*-merciless aftermath.

As a special surprise, Jenna Dewan Tatum was the moderator for the panel. “I’m the hugest, biggest ‘Outlander’ fan,” she declared. During the lively panel, Tatum challenged the actors to a “Truth or Dance” game, and the audience had the honor of seeing Balfe and...

American Gods Episode 4 recap: The backstory of Laura Moon
In last night’s fourth episode of American Gods we got the backstory of how Shadow Moon and Laura Moon first met. The story starts with Laura — played by Emily Browning — working as croupier at a casino. She is bored and sick of her job. That is, until Shadow walks up to her Black Jack table and tries to pull a fast one. Laura warns Shadow about the cameras and the casino’s security and tells him that if he puts the gambling tokens back she will not give him away. Shadow agrees, loses his final hand and walks away. Billy Bob Thornton, Colin Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, and Allison Tolman in Fargo (2014)
The Best Dual Roles on TV, Ranked
Billy Bob Thornton, Colin Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, and Allison Tolman in Fargo (2014)
It’s difficult enough for an actor to be tasked with transforming into a new person — in aspect, personality, movement and spirit — from role to role. But when double duty (or more) is required within the same project, that’s when the real challenge kicks in, because the viewer must be convinced that the same actor is distinctly different when they’re playing both parts in rapid succession, sometimes even side-by side or interacting with each other.

Dating back to shows like “The Patty Duke Show,” “Bewitched” and “I Dream of Jeannie,” the dual role usually allowed for storylines involving twins, cousins or other lookalikes. Even “Knight Rider” stuck a mustache and goatee on David Hasselhoff to give him an evil twin. Over time though, these performances became less campy and more convincing, going beyond the fake hair, goofy costuming or “evil” shortcut trappings. These days, dual roles can be...

Colony Season 2 Episode 12 Review: Seppuku
Why, Hosts, why??

The Hosts were not pleased with events as they occurred on Colony Season 2 Episode 12 because the ending came as a great shock. They were obviously not witnessing the same great stuff I was.

Don't those Hosts know how to have a good time? Geez, why don't they think of the Los Angeles Bloc as an ant farm? If nothing else, the people within it must be entertaining them.

This was such an eventful hour and that it all led up to the Hosts scheduling the Los Angeles Bloc for destruction tells me a few things.

When you don't know if the show you're writing is going to be renewed, you go for broke and make it as thrilling as possible.

The finale is going to shake things up even further, and I'd expect much of what we know to be up in the air – most especially the fate of our protagonists.

Good news, everyone! A new Futurama game is on the way!
So, there's a new Futurama game on the way. This wouldn't be the first time the Planet Express crew was in a videogame, though that one was released 14(!) years ago, and was met with middling-to-poor reviews. This next one will hopefully be better though, presumably with Black Jack and hookers! The new game will be called Futurama: Worlds Of Tomorrow, and will be a mobile app released... Read More...

Atari Flashback Classics Volume 1 Review
Whenever a collection of classic games is released, I always find myself picking it up. Despite not usually having nostalgia for these retro packages (as my first console was the Genesis), I enjoy learning more about the medium that I love, and they’re typically a good way to experience games that I missed out on. Unfortunately, a lot of these end up being hit-or-miss; for every one game I end up loving, there are often a handful of titles that are only interesting to look at through a historical lens.

The latest retro video game collection comes in the form of Atari Flashback Classics Volume 1. This $20 collection features 50 games in total, with 9 being arcade games, and 41 Atari 2600-era titles. Since the games are the reason why anyone would pick this up, and there are way too many of them to touch on individually, here’s the full list of arcade titles: Black Widow,...

Love and squalor: how Grey Gardens changed the documentary genre
Part Miss Havisham, part Warhol superstars, movie about eccentric pair living in a crumbling Long Island estate was a big step away from fly-on-the-wall films

A 40th anniversary celebration of the documentary Grey Gardens in the Hamptons seems an appropriate moment to look at it again, not least because its protagonists, “Big Edie” and “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale, themselves seem to live approximately 40 years in the past. Captured by the Maysles brothers, Albert and David, in the excremental squalor of their once-magnificent, now faded, rodent-infested Long Island estate, the pair – more like competitive sisters than mother and daughter – bicker and squabble, reconcile, sing old show tunes and, most of all, dwell on the vanished Atlantis of their glory days, a time of cotillions, debutante balls, summer estates, swimming parties, the Social Register, ceaseless champagne and splendid wealth. Abandoned by Big Edie’s husband in 1931, mother and daughter were left to...

George R.R. Martin: Why He Thinks That ‘‘Outlander’ Was Robbed’ During Emmy Nominations
Game of Thrones (2011)
George R.R. Martin has some thoughts on the recent Emmy nominations. While he’s super thrilled with the news of “Game of Thrones” topping the list with 23 noms, he thinks some contenders got snubbed, especially one certain Starz series.

“‘Outlander was robbed,” the author wrote to a fan on his LiveJournal comments section. “All three leads were amazing … especially Tobias Menzies in his double role as Frank and Black Jack.” The drama receive two nomination for costume and production design.

“Eva Green also deserved a nomination for her work in ‘Penny Dreadful,’” he added. “Of course, every year has omissions. And right now it is harder than it has ever been. So many great, great shows to watch.”

If you were among those Sassenachs bummed that Starz’s Outlander didn’t get any major Emmy nominations Thursday, you’re in very good, very prolific company.

“Outlander was robbed,” Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin wrote in a response to someone who commented on his LiveJournal on Friday. “All three leads were amazing… especially Tobias Menzies in his double role as Frank and Black Jack.”

Last Week’S Review: Review: ‘Outlander’ Says a ‘Hail Mary’ and Prepares for the End

That’s What She Said

After spending much of the back half of the season on the Jacobite rebellion and the upcoming Culloden battle, this week’s finale surpassed it all by bringing viewers into the far future – 1968, to be exact. There we picked up with the Reverend’s funeral, which new character Roger oversaw just as an aged Claire and her grown-up daughter Brianna entered the scene. Rather than focus on the present, the remainder of the episode jumped back and forth from there to that fateful day in 1746, when Prince Charles commanded all of his men to death. Although it felt like a cheat to not see the actual battle go down, that is how Claire experienced it, and given that this is the story of her journey, piecing history together through artifacts...

Outlander‘s Season 2 finale is bearing down on us like (270-year-old Spoiler Alert!) the British at Culloden. You’ve got a week until the finale airs, and we’ve got you covered like Jamie’s plaid on a blustery Highlands morn.

The scenes set in Outlander‘s grimy, emotionally gutted Jacobite army encampment in last Saturday’s episode drove home an important visual point: Paris, with all of its stunning silks and satins, is very far away indeed.

Much has been made of the dazzling looks — particularly that showstopper of a red dress — that series costume designer Terry Dresbach and her team put together for the Frasers’ sojourn in France. But equally important (and just as stringently researched) are the clothes that Claire, Jamie and the rest of the cast wear at the season’s end in Scotland.

Outlander Season 2 Episode 12 Review: The Hail Mary
Welcome to Death Watch 1746 ladies and gentlemen!

While the great battle of Culloden will soon bring over 1,000 deaths (total) on both sides of the Jacobite rebellion, Outlander Season 2 Episode 12 focused on two: those of Colum MacKenzie and Alex Randall.

It wasn't just their deaths that were highlighted, but more importantly their respective relationships with their brothers and how each of them were viewed in the eyes of those they loved or who they were loved by.

We haven't seen much of Colum MacKenzie during Outlander Season 2. Seeing him now was rather bittersweet, as he'd had enough of walking this earth on his feeble legs.

Upon his arrival, it was obvious he was much weaker than usual, and even a good verbal sparring took a lot out of him.

His plan was to deliver the news he'd made his decision about the future of the MacKenzie clan. Somehow, I think Colum...

Watch Outlander Online: Season 2 Episode 12
There was always a chance if Claire was going to help Alex Randall, she'd run into Jonathan.

That's exactly what happened on Outlander Season 2 Episode 12, as she was at Alex's bedside and a plain clothes Jonathan appeared.

The man Alex knew so well was unlike any version Claire had encountered before.

Watch Outlander Season 2 Episode 12 Online

That was a good thing, because as Alex lay dying, his greatest wish was for his kind (cough) brother to marry Mary.

Would the man we knew as Black Jack go through with it? Why?

Meanwhile, there was another man in town to talk to his brother about pending life issues.

Column appeared, also under the weather, hoping to speak to both Dougal and Jamie.

Find out what happened in conversations with all of them when you watch Outlander online!

That’s What She Said

Despite the mini-victories Claire has been able to land along the way in her attempts to change history, the bloody battle of Culloden was only days away when the episode picked up this week. With the knowledge of history under her belt, Claire’s only move was to replenish her medical supplies and hope for a small miracle or “hail Mary,” as the episode titled suggests. So the character did what she does best, which is to find a greater meaning for herself in the face of disaster. This week that meant helping Mary take care of her dying fiancé Alex, despite the fact that doing so brought Black Jack back into her life. As the rest of the clans waited for their death orders, this at least allowed Claire the small satisfaction of...

Outlander Recap: The Hail Marry
Need to catch up? Check out last week’s Outlander recap for Season 2, Episode 11, “Vengeance Is Mine.”

What do you get for the couple who has… nothing, really?

Sure, a wedding registry is the least of concerns when it comes to the hastily arranged nuptials that take place in this week’s Outlander. But c’mon: I’m sure Black Jack Randall and Mary Hawkins could use something to mark the beginning of their terrible new union. How about a deviled egg plate? Or a stand mixer? Maybe some fluffy new towels with which to dry their tears?

How ‘Outlander’ Showrunner Ronald D. Moore Brought Women’s Voices to the Sexy Bodice-Ripper (Emmy Video)

Ronald D. Moore envisioned a season of premium television, broken into one-hour segments, as soon as he read Diana Gabaldon’s first book in the historical fantasy romance series “Outlander.” It’s how his mind works. He saw the world, respected Gabaldon’s attention to research and detail — and her ability to write a bodice-ripping romance (more than 25 million copies sold worldwide) that’s packed with unexpected plots twists. Having worked in the “Star Trek” and “Battlestar Galactica” universes, Moore knows how to create a grounded, immersive world with engaging characters who carry you through the narrative. (Eight Season One episodes are on available on Netflix.) “Outlander” may be a fantasy, but it’s believable. And sexy as hell.

We spoke as “Outlander” Season 2 was unspooling on Starz, leaving behind the rugged Scottish highlands for Jacobean intrigue in Versailles. “It was great to do something fresh and completely different,” Moore said.

Last Week’S Review: ‘Outlander’ Gets Brutal, Because Nobody’s Safe During Wartime

That’s What She Said

With nothing else to do but wait for Charles to give the next orders, Claire once again put her medical skills to good use by yanking out teeth and curing the various ailments of the men, women and children who are also stuck in her position. It was busywork of sorts for her to occupy her mind with knowing what’s to come, but it all took a turn for the worse when she and Jamie were ordered out of town. When the Redcoats threatened to kill them all — especially the notorious Jamie — Claire once again put herself on the line with a risky move, pretending to be an English hostage in order to allow the men a bargaining chip. 'Outlander': Caitriona Balfe on Sex, Violence and Time Travel
At first glance, the premise behind Outlander — the hour-long series now in its second season on Starz — sounds kind of ridiculous. A married World War II nurse time travels back to mid-1700s Scotland, falls in love with a rugged, dashing Highland warrior and becomes involved with the Jacobite uprising against the British? Huh? Based on the popular Diana Gabaldon book series — the first of which was released 25 years ago (and is still going) – there's far more to this fantastical time-traveling historical bodice ripper than kilts and corsets. Full of bold,...

Review: 'Outlander' Season 2 Episode 6, 'Best Laid Schemes' Duels to the Death
Last Week's Review: 'Outlander' Season 2 Episode 5, 'Untimely Resurrection': Betting It All on Black Jack That's What She Said "Bad things tend to happen when we're apart." It doesn't take a time traveling "witch" to deduce that one. Indeed, whenever Claire and Jamie have been separated — for whatever reason—bad things have inevitably followed. Saturday's episode was no exception. As though this season hasn't been tumultuous enough for the title characters (you know, setting into a new country, dealing with poisoning, attempted rape and a secret uprising), this week was a rough one for fans. Following up on his promise to not duel Randall, Jamie finally opened up to Claire about why he agreed to stay away from his enemy for another year: So that if anything were to happen to him, Claire could go back to Frank. Viewers who watched the Season 2 premiere know that Frank is indeed alive and well in the future,...
