To kick off the Musical Belongings series, two of the most important Indian musicians of our time will be performing in Berlin: violinist Kala Ramnath (also known as Singing Violin) and veena player Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh. The Musical Belongings. The Musical Belongings project is funded by the programme ‘Excellent Orchestral Landscape in Germany’ of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (Bkm).
Kala Ramnath, known for fusion projects with Hilary Hahn, learned her unique singing style from Guru Pandit Jasraj. She comes from the North Indian Hindustani music tradition. Jayanthi Kumaresh, representative of the Carnatic music tradition of South India, plays and teaches the Saraswati Veena, the Indian lute.
The first concert project is thus a double encounter: not only European and Indian lute music, but also North and South Indian music meet here and show the whole variety of ragas, the many melodic basic structures of India’s traditional music.

12 May 2023 — Three-time Grammy® Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn has announced her latest album with Deutsche Grammophon: a recording of Eugène Ysaÿe’s Six Sonatas for Violin Solo, op. 27, to be released July 14 on CD, a 2-lp gatefold vinyl edition, and in digital formats including a Dolby Atmos version. Composed beginning in 1923, these six sonatas are among the supreme feats of technical virtuosity in the violin repertoire. Hahn’s interpretations, recorded last fall in the lead-up to this year’s centenary, see her come full circle as a direct musical descendant of Ysaÿe himself.
“Just as Eugène Ysaÿe was inspired by Bach to write these six sonatas—and in doing so set a crucial milestone in the evolution of the violin—so too am I inspired by Ysaÿe to continually grow as an artist, to pour all of myself into this music and to commit myself fully to the pieces appearing on this recording,...

Live From Here host Chris Thile kickstarted a new digital series called “Live From Home,” featuring self-recorded performances of musicians around the globe as they find ways to create and share music in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Like virtually every large-scale performance in the country, Live From Here‘s upcoming shows have been postponed.
“We’re inside and not out there making music,” Thile explains in the video, recording from a closet at his family’s house. “So we thought we’d make music in here.”

Boardwalk Empire, Season 4, Episode 5, “Erlkönig”
Written by Howard Korder
Directed by Tim Van Patten
Airs Sundays at 9pm Est on HBO
Kate is new to Boardwalk Empire this season and her reviews will approach the acclaimed series from the newbie’s perspective.
This week, on Boardwalk Empire: Gillian becomes desperate, Mueller moves up, and Eddie is taken by the Erlkönig
As many viewers will no doubt be aware, Der Erlkönig is a poem by Goethe based on Danish folklore that was adapted by the great (early) Romantic composer Franz Schubert into one of his most famous lieder, or art songs. To set the mood for the discussion of by far the best episode this season, so far:
Schubert’s “Erlkonig” tells the story of a father racing through the forest on horseback to get his young son home while the son shudders and cries out to his father about the spectral Erlkonig (trans.

Once again, it's time for the return of Videodrome, our semi-regular showcase for the best music videos around. Since the form has given the world game-changing helmers in both the blockbuster and arthouse realms, it's always important to keep an eye on promos, and indeed, one could argue that there's more invention to be found in the short form than there is in features. So, without further ado, the five best music videos we've seen in the last few weeks. As ever, any tips and suggestions are more than welcome. Hilary Hahn & Hauschka - "Draw A Map" (dir. Eric Epstein) Despite winning Best Indie/Rock Video at the U.K. Music Video Awards last year for his haunting clip for Memory Tapes, Eric Epstein, a NYC-based former motion graphics artist, has been slow to follow it up. Here's what I have to say to all the people who bemoan the state of classical music: My classical list is the last one I'm posting (as has often been the case) because there were so many great releases to listen to that I didn't finish until now.
I want to once again admit the biases operating in my best-of-the-year classical lists: I am most interested in the piano, choral, and symphonic literatures. I’m happy to listen to other things when they come my way, but those are what I seek out, vastly tipping the balance in their favor (tipping the balance against opera is the increasing disinclination of record companies to send promos for new opera recordings unless one specifically asks -- and even that is no guarantee). Also note: no reissues or compilations here. That disqualified even the first box-set appearance of David Zinman's fine Mahler cycle,...

In the latest Music in the movies column, we salute the work of James Newton Howard, the purveyor of themes for many of M. Night Shyamalan’s films…
An accomplished musician at a young age, James Newton Howard studied at the USC School of music, and after he graduated, began a career as a session musician, working with some of the biggest names in the business before embarking on a career as a composer for film and TV.
He composed the iconic score for the TV show ER, as well as scoring a wealth of memorable scores for movies over the years.
With the imminent release of The Last Airbender on Blu-ray and DVD, I thought now would be the ideal time to look at his work with the director M. Night Shyamalan, as well as two of my other favourites in his back catalogue…

Bach on the organ? Of course. On the piano? Certainly. On the cello? Naturally. On the violin? Sure. But Bach on the banjo? The ukelele? The mandolin? How about the glass harp? Or the clarinet, the guitar, and the double bass. And let's not forget a cappella. You hear them all -- brilliantly filmed and recorded -- courtesy of Bach & friends, a gorgeous two-hour documentary by Michael R. Lawrence. The film, three years in the making, is not a stunt. It delivers musicianship of the highest order on every one of the instruments. We're talking Joshua Bell, Hilary Hahn, Simone Dinerstein, Richard Stoltzman, the Emerson String Quartet, the Swingle Singers, Bobby McFerrin, and Matt Haimowitz. We're also talking Felix Hell (organ), Zuill Bailey (cello), Manuel Barrueco (guitar), Edgar Meyer (double bass), Chris Thile (mandolin), Bela Fleck (banjo), Jake Shimabukuro (ukelele),...

Welcome to the very first edition of The Screening Log’s “Great Movie Moments” series, a selection of specific scenes that caught my attention and left a long-lasting impression on me. Most of the scenes you will see here are taken from flicks already released on DVD, but you may occasionally stumble across one from a current theatrical release.
For this first edition, I picked M. Night Shyamalan’s 2004 mystery “The Village.” Although it’s certainly not one of my favorite films, there’s one scene in the movie that really gave me the chills, not because it’s scary, but rather because of how beautifully it is set up, shot and edited.
In this scene, Joaqun Phoenix prevents Bryce Dallas Howard from being attacked by one of these creatures the villagers are so afraid of. The camera angles in this scene really work for me, and Hilary Hahn’s...

Nicolas Cage Upset Over Oscar Date Rumors
Oscar nominee Nicolas Cage is upset with reports he's dating a 23-year-old violinist, and planning to take her to the Academy Awards on Sunday. A British tabloid reported the romance with Hilary Hahn, but Cage is insistent he'll be attending the Oscars alone on Sunday. And he's also keen to point out that he isn't dating the violinist. He says, "Hilary is a friend of mine. I have tremendous respect for her as an artist, however there is no romantic involvement between us." Cage is nominated for his dual role as screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and his brother Donald in the film Adaptation.

Cage Searches for Oscar Date
Newly single Oscar nominee Nicolas Cage is searching for the perfect date for Sunday's ceremony - but keeps getting turned down. The Adaptation Best Actor contender was hoping to persuade sexy violinist Hilary Hahn to accompany him to the star studded bash but her parent's had other ideas. They decided that the 16-year age gap between their 23-year old daughter and 39-year old Cage was too big and convinced Hilary that she should politely decline. However, the superstar - who split with wife Lisa Marie Presley after only five months of marriage - remains optimistic. An aide says, "Nic's got a few irons on the fire for his date on the big night."...
