The #1 Horror Movie on Hulu Features a Modern Scream Queen Battling Gigantic Monsters
Image
A sci-fi-infused action spectacle that’s toplined by Milla Jovovich and adapted from a video game sits as the most watched genre picture on the Hulu platform today. Surprisingly, I’m not talking about Resident Evil. No, I’m speaking of a lesser-known effort from 2020 called Monster Hunter.

Jovovich’s longtime husband Paul W.S. Anderson is at the helm of this under-seen effort. He also wrote the script. Anderson adapted the screenplay from Kaname Fujioka’s video game series.

From my vantage point, it seems Capcom hoped to recapture the success of the Resident Evil franchise by adapting another popular genre game for the screen with Jovovich in the lead and Anderson at the helm. Like with Resident Evil, Jovovich plays a character written for the film who doesn’t exist within the video game franchise.

Monster Hunter is a film on Hulu that has yet to find its audience.

Harris Jr., Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, Josh Helman, Jin Au-Yeung and Ron Perlman in the film, which is an adaptation of Capcom's video game series of the same name.

With the Recent Backlash, Let’s Examine the Relationship Between Hollywood and China
Image
Photo: Hollywood and China This past weekend saw the premiere of the video game movie Monster Hunter in China, ahead of its upcoming release in the United States. And then, just after one day, it found itself embroiled in controversy and was pulled from Chinese theaters. The reason? The backlash from viewers over a scene perceived to be racist. Per Variety, the scene involved two soldiers sharing some banter, one of them played by Asian-American rapper Jin Au-Yeung, a.k.a Mc Jin. At one point Jin’s character jokes to his companion, “Look at my knees! What kind of knees are these? Chi-knees!”. For most of us, this appears to just be a dumb pun at best, but Chinese viewers interpreted the line as a reference to an old racist schoolyard rhyme: “Chinese, Japanese, dirty knees, look at these”. Compounding matters, to localize the joke the subtitles for the...

Milla Jovovich Would Always Love to Return to the Resident Evil Universe
Image
The Resident Evil movie series is getting rebooted with an all-new story, but original star Milla Jovovich is still open for one day returning to the franchise. Starting in 2002, Jovovich played Alice in the Resident Evil movies, which was written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. An original character not featured in the video games, Alice would return for six sequels with Jovovich consistently playing the role, culminating in 2017's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

Alice's story might be over, but we may not have seen the last of Milla Jovovich in the franchise. Speaking with ComicBook.com about her role as Alice and the future of the franchise, Jovovich admits that she'd be up for getting involved in Resident Evil again at some point in the future if the opportunity ever comes along. Here's what she told the outlet.

"Resident Evil is such a huge part of my life,...

Monster Hunter Director & Actor Apologize, Remove Scene Responsible for Chinese Backlash
Image
Mere days after his new movie Monster Hunter debuted worldwide, filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson found himself in hot water in China. A certain phrase from the film where a character points at his knees and says "What kind of knees are these? Chin-Knees," has been deemed racist by some Chinese moviegoers, who took to social media to blast the movie and its creators. Amidst reports of Monster Hunter getting boycotted from Chinese theaters, Anderson issued an apology.

"I am absolutely devastated that a line from our movie, Monster Hunter, has offended some audience members in China. I apologize for any anxiety or upset that this line and its interpretation caused. Monster Hunter was made as fun entertainment and I am mortified that anything within it has caused unintentional offense. We have respectfully removed the line from the movie. It was never our intention to send a message of discrimination or disrespect to anyone.

China Blocks ‘Monster Hunter’ Online Presence Despite Apologies and Scene Deletion
Image
Although “Monster Hunter” apologized for and censored a line of dialogue that sparked anger in China from its global version, Chinese film websites and apps have taken the unusual step of deleting the title or its user ratings — indicating that the movie’s odds of returning to the Chinese big screen likely remain slim.

Chinese cinemas began to voluntarily pull scheduled viewings within just a day of the video game adaptation’s Dec. 4 China premiere, a full three weeks ahead of its U.S. Dec. 25 roll-out. At issue was a ten-second exchange interpreted by passionately patriotic viewers as “insulting to China.” The controversy even caught the attention of the official accounts of the Communist Youth League and a high-level Communist Party magazine, whose posts decrying the film gave the issue more visibility and clout. By midnight Friday, theaters across the country had been ordered to cancel any future “Monster Hunter” screenings and to refund tickets.

Monster Hunter Director And Stars Break The Silence On Racist Scene
As if the movie industry didn’t already have enough on its plate right now thanks to Covid-19, Monster Hunter, which has actually managed to reach theaters in the (hopefully) latter stages of a pandemic, has been pulled from the big screen entirely in a certain country over accusations of racism.

The controversial sequence in question, which depicts two male soldiers (one white and one Asian) cracking jokes between themselves while driving, centers around an exchange that begins with the latter, played by Jin Au-Yeung, stating: “Look at my knees!” Which in turn prompts the other to respond with: “What kind of knees are these?” According to a statement released by Jin over on Instagram, his character’s ensuing reply (and the offending dialogue in question), “Chi-knees!”, was intended to be little more than a harmless play on words. China, however, isn’t laughing.

Despite apologizing profusely for any offense he may have caused,...

‘Monster Hunter’ Director Paul W.S. Anderson, Co-Star Mc Jin Apologize Over Scene That Caused China Backlash
Image
Monster Hunter director Paul W.S. Anderson has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the film, which was pulled from Chinese cinemas during its opening weekend amid backlash over a line of dialogue that has been perceived as racist by local audiences. In a statement provided to Deadline, Anderson says he is “devastated” and “mortified” that anything in the film “has caused unintentional offense… It was never our intention to send a message of discrimination or disrespect to anyone. To the contrary — at its heart our movie is about unity.” (See the statement in full below.)

Also apologizing, Asian-American rapper/actor Jin Au-Yeung (aka Mc Jin), posted a three-minute video to his Instagram account in which he says the situation is “eating at my heart.” His story was then commented on by star Milla Jovovich. In her reply she wrote, “It was our fault for not doing our due diligence and...

‘Monster Hunter’ Producers Apologize for Racist Scene After Film Was Pulled From Chinese Theaters
Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa in Monster Hunter (2020)
Constantin Films, the studio that produced the upcoming film “Monster Hunter,” apologized on Sunday for a scene in the film that used a racist playground rhyme, which led China’s film board to pull the film from theaters over the weekend.

“Monster Hunter,” which stars Milla Jovovich and is based on the Capcom video game of the same name, was expected to contend for the top of the box office charts this weekend with an opening in the $16-18 million range. It seemed to be on track to meet that mark with a reported $5.3 million grossed on Friday. But the film quickly faced backlash over a scene that appeared to reference an old racist playground rhyme that went, “Chinese, Japanese, dirty knees, look at these” as the chanters would pull at their eyes.

The “Monster Hunter” scene in question features rapper Mc Jin (Jin Au-Yeung) saying, “Look at my knees.

‘Monster Hunter’ Pulled From China Cinemas Amid Backlash Over Scene Considered Racially Offensive
Image
An online backlash that swirled in China on Friday over a scene in Monster Hunter has resulted in the movie being pulled from the country’s cinemas. The Paul Ws Anderson-directed feature game adaptation had been eyeing the market as one of its biggest plays, but a short exchange in the film has been perceived as racist by local audiences, and led to its run being abruptly halted late yesterday, the first day of its official launch.

We understand that Tencent, which is handling local distribution and is an equity partner in the film that stars Milla Jovovich, is working with the Chinese government and agencies involved to remedy the situation — ie removing the offending scene. But it remains unclear if the movie would then be re-released into local cinemas.

Monster Hunter had limited sneaks on Thursday (December 3) in China before going wide yesterday. It had landed in 3rd place for the day,...

‘Monster Hunter’ Pulled From Chinese Cinemas Over Scene Said to Be Racial Slur
Image
Chinese regulators are in the midst of censoring the Hollywood title “Monster Hunter” after controversy broke out online on opening day over a ten second-long exchange in the film that patriotic local viewers say “insults China.”

The fantasy action film is produced, written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and stars his wife Milla Jovovich, Tony Jaa, T.I., and others. It also features Jin Au-Yeung, better known as Mc Jin. He is the first Asian-American solo rapper to sign to a major label and is well known in China for his appearance on the popular competition show “The Rap of China.”

The movie is loosely based on the immensely popular role-playing video game series of the same name, developed by Japan’s Capcom, but sold and distributed in China by Chinese tech giant Tencent, whose film arm also co-produced the film.

“Monster Hunter” enjoyed midnight screenings in the small hours of Friday local time,...

15 Films to See in December
Image
Congratulations. You’ve almost endured the hellscape that is 2020. As we look towards the final month of the year, things are looking brighter on the cinema side. Unfortunately, not the actual cinemas themselves as Covid rates continue to rise, but the December lineup that is mostly rolling out digitally is remarkably strong.

Just a note, we’re not including films only having a one-week awards qualifying runs and will return earlier next year for proper releases and we’ve already mentioned Sound of Metal and Mank in last month’s round-up as they got theatrical premieres then, but will roll out on streaming services this Friday.

Lastly, before we get to the rundown, we imagine Christopher Nolan’s Tenet will dominate quite a bit of conversation this month as those opting to consider their health over returning to theaters can watch it at home.

One Giant Dragon in International Trailers for 'Monster Hunter' Movie
Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa in Monster Hunter (2020)
"To kill a monster, you need a monster." Sony Pictures has revealed yet another official Chinese trailer for Monster Hunter, the epic big battle movie based on the international video game series of the same name (created by Kaname Fujioka for Capcom). We featured the first full trailer a month ago, now we have even more gnarly footage. When Lt. Artemis and her loyal soldiers are transported to a new world, they engage in a desperate battle for survival against enormous enemies with incredible powers. They must fight gigantic monsters of all sorts of shapes and sizes to return home safely. This epic new Paul W.S. Anderson movie stars Milla Jovovich, of course, along with T.I. Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, Ron Perlman, Josh Helman, Jin Au-Yeung, and Tony Jaa. This new trailer finally dips more into the cheesiness of W.S. Anderson's movies, despite the rest of it still looking pretty badass.

Monster Hunter Director Breaks Down How to Make a Successful Video Game Movie
Image
When it comes to making movie adaptations of classic video games, few filmmakers have achieved the success of Paul W.S. Anderson. After making his name in the business with the original Mortal Kombat movie in 1995, the filmmaker returned to the genre with the Resident Evil franchise starring Milla Jovovich. In an interview Anderson explained how he approaches the work of video game movie adaptations now that he is also taking on Monster Hunter, which hits theaters as we head into the New Year.

"I think you need to stay true to the to the fabric of the game - which we have done, as I've kind of demonstrated. But also I think you have to be aware that you're walking a very fine line, because as well as making a movie for fans who know a lot about the source material, you're also making a movie for people who don't know anything about it.

Monster Hunter Trailer: Paul W.S. Anderson & Milla Jovovich Return to Deliver Blockbuster Spectacle
Image
With one celebrated Anderson in filmmaking having to push The French Dispatch to 2021 and another Anderson getting a late start on his next film, 2020 is now the year of Paul W.S. Anderson, whose latest adventure film Monster Hunter, has been moved up to Christmas week as other blockbusters (namely Dune) have vacated the premises. Ahead of the release, the first trailer has now landed.

Also starring Tony Jaa, Tip ‘T.I.’ Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, Josh Helman, Jin Au-Yeung, and Ron Perlman, the videogame adaptation has been in development with Anderson for much of the last decade. Judging from the trailer, the director is bringing some epic scope and pure popcorn-munching fun to his take on story. It remains to be seen how many of us will actually feel safe taking part in the experience come December, but hopefully the exhibition world is in better shape by then.

‘Monster Hunter’ Trailer: Milla Jovovich Fends Off Gigantic Dragons With Fire Swords (Video)
Milla Jovovich
Milla Jovovich, we’re gonna need a bigger fire sword. The gigantic dragons and demon spawn-looking beasts in Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Monster Hunter” are gigantic and ready to go down.

The first trailer for “Monster Hunter,” which is based on the popular video game franchise, looks in some ways like one big long boss fight. Jovovich plays a human military commander whose team is teleported to an exotic planet overrun by all sorts of hellish creatures, and their only goal is to figure out how to get back home and close the portal gate from the other side.

“So what, are we like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ now,” one of the soldiers says as they stare down a monster that looks like a cross between a scorpion and rhino that’s just crawled out from underneath a sand dune. “This is officially above my pay grade,” another wise-cracking soldier says.

Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa in Monster Hunter (2020)
First Trailer for Big Battle Movie 'Monster Hunter' with Milla Jovovich
Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa in Monster Hunter (2020)
"Did you see that thing?!" Sony Pictures has unveiled the first official full trailer for Monster Hunter, the epic big battle movie based on the international video game series of the same name (created by Kaname Fujioka for Capcom). So this technically is a video game movie, but it doesn't really look like one. When Lt. Artemis and her loyal soldiers are transported to a new world, they engage in a desperate battle for survival against enormous enemies with incredible powers. Basically they must fight gigantic monsters of all sorts of shapes and sizes. This epic new Paul W.S. Anderson movie stars Milla Jovovich, of course, along with T.I. Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, Ron Perlman, Josh Helman, Jin Au-Yeung, and Tony Jaa. The monsters looks great! I know this is going to be so dumb (every W.S. Anderson movie is) but it also looks like perfectly epic big screen entertainment.

‘Monster Hunter’ Trailer: Milla Jovovich’s ‘Resident Evil’ Reunion Is One of the Last 2020 Tentpoles Left
Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa in Monster Hunter (2020)
Video game adaptations can be hit or miss, but with much of the “Resident Evil” team behind “Monster Hunter,” the newest action thriller has some serious heft behind it. “Resident Evil” director Paul W.S. Anderson (not to be confused with that other Paul Anderson) is overseeing a forthcoming adaptation alongside his wife and “Resident Evil” leading lady Milla Jovovich. Released in 2004, “Monster Hunter” is a franchise of fantasy-themed action role-playing games. Monster Hunter is Japanese company Capcom’s second best-selling video game, after Resident Evil. After churning out six highly successful “Resident Evil” films, Anderson is turning to the company’s other game for his next franchise. A newly released trailer promises plenty of action-packed thrills.

In the game, the player takes the role of a Hunter, slaying or trapping large monsters across various landscapes as part of quests. Some quests involve the gathering of a certain item, which can...

‘Monster Hunter’: Milla Jovovich Takes on Fearsome Beasts in New Trailer
Image
Some of the most iconic beasts of the “Monster Hunter” video games appeared in the official trailer for the film adaptation from director Paul W.S. Anderson, which was released on Wednesday.

Milla Jovovich plays Captain Artemis, a new character made specifically for the film and a human military officer whose team gets transported to a world populated by giant monsters. Her unfamiliarity with the strange planet helps the film simulate the first experiences of playing the video game for the first time, Anderson said during New York Comic Con.

“I came to the game not knowing anything about it. And as a stranger, I was immersed in this world containing these amazing landscapes and these amazing creatures that would kick my ass,” Anderson said. “That should be the filmgoing experience as well.'”

The trailer also teases looks at some of the games’ iconic monsters that will inhabit its movie adaptation.

Milla Jovovich's Monster Hunter Movie Gets Delayed Until 2021
Image
Yet another major movie has been pushed out of 2020 and into 2021. Monster Hunter, the upcoming adaptation of the video game series of the same name starring Milla Jovovich, has been delayed by Sony Pictures. This is the latest in a long line of would-be blockbusters that have been pushed back due to the ongoing theater closure and uncertainty regarding the immediate future of the exhibition business. With that, Sony has opted to wait an additional seven months before unleashing these monsters in theaters.

According to several reports, Monster Hunter will now open on April 23, 2021. The latest from director Paul W.S. Anderson and his wife Milla Jovovich had previously been set to debut on September 4, 2020. This is particularly interesting since the video game adaptation wrapped filming back in December 2018. By the time it hits theaters, it will have been nearly two and a half years between production wrap and its release.
