Zach Cregger Says His ‘Resident Evil’ Movie Exists ‘Outside’ of the Original Characters Because Fans ‘Already Have That’ With the Games: ‘I’m Not Going to Tell Leon’s Story’
Image
Zach Cregger remains adamant about not remaking any story within the “Resident Evil” saga for his big-screen adaptation.

Although he wants to have an original plot, the “Weapons” director told Inverse that he’s “not breaking the rules of the games.”

He continued, “I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games.”

Cregger will direct the movie based on the hugely popular horror video game franchise. He has written the script alongside his co-writer, Shay Hatten. Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film.

Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.

Cregger is set on creating a project that is “outside of the characters of the games,” but he reassured fans that the game’s roots will be respected.

Brad Pitt, ‘Star Trek’ and a Possible Michael Bay Return: To-Do List for New Paramount’s Film Slate
Image
At first glance, the new Paramount has a 2026 slate that looks a little bare – only five films slated for release. But studio insiders told TheWrap on Thursday that three other films that are deep in post-production are on course for release in 2026.

The first is “Heart of the Beast,” a survival thriller from “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer starring Brad Pitt as an Army special forces vet who must survive in the Alaskan wilderness with his retired combat dog after a plane crash. Also starring J.K. Simmons and with Damien Chazelle as executive producer, it will mark Pitt’s first film since he set a new career high at the box office with Apple’s “F1.”

The other two films are a pair of horror projects from Paramount’s production deal with 18hz, the company founded by former DC Films chief Walter Hamada after his exit from the superhero label: “Primate,...

The Most Underrated Horror Movie Sequel of all Time is Now Free to Stream, and it’s Brutal
Image
Let’s be clear about something up front: The Strangers is great. Bryan Bertino’s 2008 home invasion classic about a troubled couple whose lives are upended by three masked killers remains a deeply ominous, chilling, relentless horror experience. It doesn’t need me to defend it.

The Strangers: Prey at Night, though, is a different story.

Released a decade after the original film, co-written by Bertino and directed by 47 Meters Down‘s Johannes Roberts, Prey at Night offers a bigger sandbox, a slight tonal shift, and even more elaborate horror setpieces, but it’s never quite gotten the love or the lasting legacy of its older sibling. That’s a shame, because it’s genuinely one of the best horror sequels of the last decade, and now it’s streaming free on Tubi, so you have no excuse to hold back on diving in.

While the original film is a more intimate affair,...

Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie won't be completely "obedient" to game lore
Image
Zach Cregger is one of the biggest names in horror right now thanks to the massive success of Barbarian. The hype for his next movie Weapons is very real. Following that, he's set to direct a new Resident Evil movie that will supposedly be more faithful to the games, something fans have been begging to see happen for decades now.

But according to Cregger's most recent comments to SFX Magazine (per Bloody Disgusting), his take on the zombie franchise might not be as game-accurate as fans were hoping. The filmmaker clarified that he “won’t be completely obedient to the lore of the games.” Honestly, that's nothing new. As a fan of the games myself, I happen to have enjoyed several Resident Evil adaptations, including the divisive Netflix series, but I imagine Cregger's comments might ruffle the feathers of some game purists.

To his credit, Cregger seems aware of that.

The Scariest Killer Shark Flick of the Century is Now Streaming on Netflix—And, There’s a Sequel on the Way
Image
Of all the horror subgenres out there, I think killer shark horror is the hardest to get right. It’s strange since, at least on the surface (pun intended), it seems like the easiest to get right. There’s a primal kind of fear of swimming alone with such beautiful yet terrifying creatures, and at its core, that’s all a killer shark movie really needs. Yet, as a bonafide killer shark fan, it’s too easy to concede that the subgenre has been drowning as of late.

Titles like Dangerous Animals wisely subvert expectations, and The Shallows is too stylish to dismiss outright, though the subgenre has always been at a disadvantage. After Jaws, it’s impossible to come anywhere close to that classic, and the subgenre has been treading water ever since. Mostly, at least, since filmmaker Johannes Roberts (The Strangers: Prey at Night) has helmed not one,...

The Strangers Return to Inflict More Pain on Riverdale Star in Chapter 2 Trailer
Image
Riverdale star Madelaine Petsch isn't free from the strangers just yet. After surviving a stab wound to the stomach in The Strangers: Chapter 1, Petsch's Maya isn't in the clear yet in the first trailer for the horror sequel The Strangers – Chapter 2.

Picking up directly where the first chapter ended, the official trailer for Chapter 2 finds Maya in the hospital recovering from her wounds. Unfortunately for her, the local law enforcement has loose lips, telling a diner full of customers and staff that she survived the strangers' assault, although her boyfriend wasn't so lucky. This leads to a chilling scene where the strangers arrive at the hospital to finish the job. The trailer then shows Maya in a vehicle with four other people, one of whom is played by The Night Agent star Gabriel Basso. While these unmasked strangers seem to have good intentions, there are hints that they may...

10 Great Shark Movies That Aren’t ‘Jaws’
Image
It’s summer, which means it’s beach season, but if you’re like me, Jaws ruined beaches for you long ago. Spielberg’s shark movie instilled a phobia of fish in me at an early age that has grown and evolved as I’ve matured. Still, there’s something about sharks and shark horror that attracts me, even if most entries are as compelling as rotten chum. No movie before or after has come even close to reaching the masterful terror of Jaws, but in honor of its 50th anniversary, I bring you ’10 Great Shark Movies That Aren’t ‘Jaws‘ and Where to Watch Them.’ Be warned, I’m using the term “great” pretty loosely here.

1. The Reef (2010) Directed by Andrew Traucki

The Reef is a straightforward but engaging story about a group of friends stranded in open water with hungry sharks lurking nearby. After their boat is capsized,...

Five Horror Movies Based on Video Games to Stream This Week
Image
With season two of “The Last of Us” now underway and director David F. Sandberg‘s adaptation of Until Dawn arriving in theaters this Friday, horror video game adaptations are having a moment. That doesn’t even touch on the box office juggernaut that is Minecraft, or sequels Mortal Kombat 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 arriving later this year.

It doesn’t appear that the horror video game adaptation trend will slow down any time soon, with Barbarian director Zach Cregger gearing up to take on Resident Evil and André Øvredal (The Last Voyage of the Demeter) attached to direct Bendy and the Ink Machine.

All of this to say that movies based on video games have come a very long way since 1993’s Super Mario Bros., especially in the genre space. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror video game adaptations. Here’s where to stream these five horror movies.

‘The Strangers: Chapter 2’ Going This Fall Instead Of ‘Saw XI’
Image
Lionsgate’s The Strangers: Chapter 2 will open in theaters on Sept. 26, 2025.

Saw XI, which had the date, has been moved off the calendar for the time being.

The first movie, Strangers: Chapter 1, debuted last May, and was one of the better-performing movies for Lionsgate in 2024, making $35.2M domestic, $48.1M worldwide.

In Chapter 2, Renny Harlin directs Riverdale‘s Madelaine Petsch as well as Gabriel Basso and Ema Horvath. Producers are Courtney Solomon, Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Alastair Burlingham, Charlie Dombek on the horror franchise movie. Alan R. Cohen & Alan Freedland wrote the screenplay.

The Strangers movie franchise kicked off in 2008 at Focus Features and starred Liv Tyler in the Bryan Bertino directed-and-written movie. That pic followed James Hoyt and Kristen McKay who visit an isolated vacation home only to encounter a rude surprise when three masked assailants make their stay a nightmare. The movie was massive on a...

Resident Evil Reboot's Plot Reportedly Revealed
Image
A new Resident Evil movie is coming to theaters in 2026 with filmmaker Zach Cregger at the helm. While there's still a lot about the movie that's not yet known, a new report may have revealed the basic plot.

According to film industry insider Daniel Richtman, the upcoming ResidentEvil reboot will follow a "hapless courier tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital. He finds himself caught in the middle of an outbreak and must fight through hordes of mutated creatures to survive." If accurate, this report would suggest that the film will feature an original story, as that's not the plot of any of the Resident Evil games.

It was recently reported that Austin Abrams (The Walking Dead) was being eyed to star in the lead role. Richtman reported that Abrams' character name is listed as "Bryan," but it's possible that this could be a code name meant to...

Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez in Resident Evil (2002)
Resident Evil | Zach Cregger’s new survival horror videogame adaptation out in 2026
Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez in Resident Evil (2002)
The next Resident Evil film is coming in September 2026 it’s now been confirmed, with Zach Cregger directing. More here.

Ever since Barbarian released in 2022 and announced director Zach Cregger as a bold new name in the horror genre, we’ve been waiting patiently for his next film.

That next film is still set to be Weapons, a horror ‘opus’. But it now sounds as though we might well be getting two films from Cregger in the same year, with news emerging that his spin on the survival horror videogame series Resident Evil will release in September of 2026.

It was last September that we first covered reports that Cregger had signed up to tackle Resident Evil, with Sony backing the project after the filmmaker declined to continue developing a remake of Clue with the studio. That agreement is now official, with Sony even publicly dating the film, per Deadline.

‘Resident Evil’ Sets September 2026 Release From Sony
Image
Sony will release Columbia Pictures’ “Resident Evil” domestically on Sept. 18, 2026.

Based on Capcom’s hugely popular horror video games, Zach Cregger has written the script and will direct. Shay Hatten is co-writing.

Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.

Cregger’s credits as a writer-director include “Miss March,” “The Civil War on Drugs” (both alongside Trevor Moore) and, most recently, “Barbarian.” He also produced the 2025 film “Companion” and is next writing, directing and producing the Josh Brolin- and Julia Garner-led horror film “Weapons” for Warner Bros., out January 2026.

“Cregger’s instinct for suspense is so effective, it’s hard to believe that before ‘Barbarian,’ the helmer worked largely in comedy (he was a member of the Whitest Kids U’Know sketch team). Then again, a deliciously twisted sense of humor runs beneath the surface,...

Resident Evil Reboot From Acclaimed Horror Director Sets Release Date
Image
A new Resident Evil movie is coming to theaters next year. The film will mark the latest of multiple reboots given to the Resident Evil franchise.

Per Deadline, the upcoming Resident Evil reboot will be released in movie theaters on Sept. 18, 2026. The new movie is not connected to the original film series from director Paul W.S. Anderson, nor the previous reboot, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, by filmmaker Johannes Roberts. For the next reboot, acclaimed horror filmmaker Zach Cregger will be taking the helm. Cregger is known for his hit 2022 movie Barbarian, which has a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score and made over $45 million at the box office against a budget of less than $5 million.

The screenplay for Cregger's Resident Evil reboot was co-written with Shay Hatten (John Wick franchise). It will be produced by Contantin Film alongside PlayStation Productions. Constantin's Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee (Barbarian), and...

Sony Boards Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’, Sets Fall 2026 Release Date
Image
Exclusive: Constantin’s Resident Evil franchise reboot, with Barbarian and Weapon filmmaker Zach Cregger directing, will stay at Sony.

Warner Bros was kicking the tires of this latest Cregger pic, but Sony isn’t letting this $1.2 billion-grossing franchise go.

A theatrical release date of September 18, 2026 has been set, which tells you how excited the studios are to get this latest rendition up on the screen. Cregger’s screenplay, which was co-written with Shay Hatten, is under wraps but apparently harkens back to the original Capcom game’s horror roots.

Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.

Resident Evil movie reboot led by Barbarian's Zach Cregger sparks bidding war
Image
The Resident Evil franchise may be gearing up for a cinematic resurrection, and this time, the undead could come with a fresh, terrifying twist. According to The Hollywood Reporter, multiple studios are locked in a bidding war to secure the rights to a film reboot of the beloved horror gaming series. But the buzz isn’t just about Resident Evil — it’s about who’s driving this reboot: Barbarian director Zach Cregger.

As The A.V. Club reports, Cregger — who started his career as a founding member of the sketch comedy group The Whitest Kids U’ Know — has seen a meteoric rise in Hollywood, drawing comparisons to Jordan Peele. Like Peele, Cregger transitioned from comedy to horror, and it’s paying off in spades. His 2022 horror film Barbarian was a breakout hit, raking in nearly 10 times its modest budget and earning acclaim for its inventive storytelling and jaw-dropping twists. With another horror project,...

The Horror Legend Who Was Inches Away From Directing Resident Evil Only Got That Far Because of an Insane Commercial
Image
It’s a well-known fact that the majority of video game adaptations on big screens are usually met with lackluster responses from audiences. Most of the casual theatergoers find them disappointing, and hardcore gamers feel the series didn’t live up to the original games.

Capcom’s horror video game franchise redefined movie adaptations. (Image via Capcom)

However, that wasn’t the case with the Resident Evil series. The original live-action film brought together a number of talented actors and success that led to several sequels. The entire series didn’t receive high praise from critics but would have achieved a lot more if one of the industry’s best horror directors got his hands on it.

January 7 Will Be an Amazing Day for Resident Evil Fans
Image
This month will be a great time for longtime fans of Resident Evil. A new film chronicling the unmade adaptation that never came to be has a premiere date that's imminent, and it looks to be one that fans won't want to miss.

George A. Romero's Resident Evil will premiere on Digital and On Demand on Jan. 7. From Uncork'd Entertainment and director Brandon Salisbury, the documentary explores the story of the original plans to turn Resident Evil into a feature film under the watch of legendary filmmaker George A. Romero. Famously, Romero laid the groundwork for modern zombie horror movies and TV shows with his iconic films like Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead. At one point, he was set to take on Resident Evil before his planned adaptation fizzled out, ultimately leading to Paul W.S. Anderson to launch his own...

Vicious: Dakota Fanning, Bryan Bertino horror film removed from Paramount release schedule
Image
Dakota Fanning (The Watchers) and The Strangers director Bryan Bertino are teaming up for a horror movie called Vicious, which is coming our way from Paramount Pictures… but we don’t know when Paramount is going to decide to show it to us. Originally set to receive a theatrical release from Paramount in August of 2025, Vicious was pushed up to February 28th – but now, Deadline reports that the film has been pulled off of Paramount’s release schedule completely. They say, “The studio is looking to find a better date for the film.”

Scripted by Bertino, Vicious sees Fanning taking on the role of a young woman who is left a strange present by a late-night visitor, and quickly realizes she is fighting for her life after slipping down a disturbing rabbit hole contained inside the gift.

V/H/S – Ranking the 7 Anthology Horror Films
Image
One of the most unique franchises to emerge in the last fifteen years, V/H/S feels like an indefinite horror franchise. After enough of the filmmakers broke through in the mainstream, other emerging voices have been eager to add their names to the franchise. Like Punk Goes Pop or And1 Mixtape for horror, the series has become a scouting ground for the next great horror filmmakers. With the arrival of V/H/S/Beyond, we’re ranking the films of the franchise. Within each, we also do a mini-ranking of the shorts, so keep an eye out for your favorite shorts.

7. V/H/S: Viral (2014)

While there are moments of Viral that stand out to this day, the overall style and stories rarely live up to the premise. Outside of this franchise, some segments would feel like a great little horror entry, but when the footage does not make sense as something that might come from a VHS,...

André Øvredal to direct mysterious horror project for Paramount
Image
At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Recently, there have been casting announcements for a movie called Primate, which is being directed by genre regular Johannes Roberts and is part of Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount. Now, Deadline has broken the news that another Hamada horror project that’s moving forward at Paramount has gotten another genre regular, Andre Ovredal, to sign on as director.

Ovredal will be directing this other film from a screenplay written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess. Donohue previously directed and co-wrote the 2013 found footage horror film The Den and wrote and directed the TV series The Unknowable.

Back in July, it was announced that Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur (Coda) had signed on to star in the horror film Primate. Since then, Johnny Sequoyah (pictured above) of Dexter: New Blood has signed on to star in the film with Kostur – and now, as the project draws closer to production, Deadline has revealed that ten more actors have joined the cast. Zach Cregger | Now he’s directing Resident Evil reboot rather than Clue remake
Zach Cregger
Director Zach Cregger was announced last week as the director of Clue – but now he’s swapped that for a Resident Evil reboot.

Zach Cregger is no longer directing Clue. Instead, the Barbarian director is swapping Sony projects, moving from one movie featuring grisly deaths in a mansion to another movie featuring, well… grisly deaths in a mansion.

Just days after being announced as the director of a new Clue film, based of course on the popular murder mystery board game (known as Cluedo in these parts), Cregger has now exited the project.

Cregger isn’t leaving the Sony stable, however. Instead, he’ll be moving over to the PlayStation Productions arm of the studio to tackle a reboot of one of the studio’s most popular and enduring videogame franchises: Resident Evil.

According to The InSneider, the decision comes largely down to money. Cregger is reported to have wanted $4m to direct Clue,...

A New Resident Evil Movie May Be Coming From Barbarian's Zach Cregger
Image
The Resident Evil movies might not be well-liked among critics, but there's no question they have been hits with fans, especially the ones directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. The original one might be the best, but there's something to like about them all. His universe has since wrapped up, but the franchise isn't anywhere near finished. As part of a reboot of the film series independent of Anderson's universe, there is 2021's Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, hailing from director Johannes Roberts. The latest film adapted the first two games from the franchise into a single movie, to less than mixed results. It included a mid-credits scene that teased a sequel, but a new report indicates a new director is on board the movie franchise.

According to insider Jeff Sneider, director Zach Cregger, known most recently for his work on the acclaimed horror movie Barbarian, could be hopping onto the Resident Evil saddle.

The Correct Order To Watch The V/H/S Horror Movies
Image
The first "V/H/S" movie was released in 2012, which was actually four full years before the last manufacturers of VCRs, Funai Electric, finally halted production on the medium.

VHS was, for those of a certain age, a seminal and ubiquitous technology. Prior to VHS, the only way to see certain cinematic classics was either to go to a repertory theater (which used to be far more common) and see it on the big screen (requiring a well-curated arthouse in your town) or to wait for something to broadcast on network TV (which was often edited for content or time). With the advent of VHS, movies were on-demand for the first time. One could rent their movies from a local video store and watch them at their leisure. For a whole generation, this was the best way to see classic movies for the first time, and the technology, for however...

V/H/S/Beyond features segments directed by seven filmmakers with varied horror experience. The upcoming movie is the seventh installment in the found footage franchise, which kicked off in 2012. Typically, each installment features a wraparound segment featuring a character or group of characters discovering a collection of tapes that contain the anthology's short films, which are written and directed by different teams. One installment a year debuted before a hiatus between 2014 and 2021, at which point the streaming service Shudder began premiering themed installments, again at yearly intervals, with the theme of Beyond set as science fiction.

Over the years, the V/H/S franchise has featured segments helmed by quite a few up-and-coming directors including Pearl's Ti West, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's Adam Wingard, and Loki's Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as well as more established horror filmmakers such as The Blair Witch Project's Edardo Sanchez, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City...

47 Meters Down Ending Explained: What Happened To Kate
Image
The 47 Meters Down ending offers a dark twist after a dramatic escape from sharks. Director Johannes Roberts considered a bleaker ending but added hope. The movie's ending echoes the brutal twist of The Descent, leaving a lasting impact.

The 47 Meters Down ending featured a miraculous escape from deadly sharks, only for the salvation of its central characters to be dashed by a dark last-minute twist. The 2017 survival horror movie follows two sisters, Lisa (Mandy Moore) and Kate (Claire Holt), stranded in a cage at the bottom of the ocean floor surrounded by hungry sharks. Right until its ending, 47 Meters Down is a taut, suspenseful thriller, and also features a number of great jump scares.

The shark movie was directed by Johannes Roberts and is notable for a surprise twist that reframes the ending after Lisa finds herself alone in the cage after Kate is seemingly killed by a shark.

Primate: Troy Kotsur to star in horror film from 47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts
Image
At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Now Deadline has an update on Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount, as they’re reporting that the studio has given the greenlight to the Hamada-produced horror film Primate, which has Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur attached to star.

Kotsur won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film Coda, becoming the first deaf male actor and only the second deaf actor overall to win an Oscar. Kotsur’s other credits include Wild Prairie Rose, No Ordinary Hero, Universal Signs, The Number 23, and episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Mandalorian, Criminal Minds,...

How To Watch The Strangers: Chapter 1 At Home
Image
Lock your doors and hide in the bathroom: The Strangers are coming home. More specifically, the first installment in Renny Harlin's new horror reboot trilogy, "The Strangers: Chapter 1," is now available to rent and buy digitally, with a home media release hopefully to follow.

In case you're not up to date on your "Strangers" lore, here's a quick recap: the original horror movie "The Strangers" rattled viewers to their core when it was released in 2008, scaring the bejesus out of spooky movie fans thanks to its tension-building, bad-guys-in-the-background slow burn, and a home invasion plot with no rhyme or reason. Director Bryan Bertino co-penned an unrelated sequel, the underrated mobile home park slasher "The Strangers: Prey At Night," in 2018, with Ben Katai co-writing the script and Johannes Roberts directing. The first "Strangers" film is polarizing but widely considered one of the freakiest movies of the aughts, while the...

Milla Jovovich in Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
Capcom reportedly remaking Resident Evil Zero and Code: Veronica
Milla Jovovich in Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
Following its Resident Evil 4 remake, Capcom is reportedly in the process of updating two spin-offs – Resident Evil Zero and Code: Veronica.

Capcom took something of a gamble when it remade Resident Evil 4 last year, but it undoubtedly paid off – the current-gen version providing a sensitive update of the ground-breaking 2005 original.

According to recent reports, Capcom is now turning its attention to a pair of Resident Evil spin-offs: 2000’s Resident Evil – Code: Veronica and 2002’s Resident Evil Zero. Both were third-person survival horror games, much like the mainline franchise, but came with their own narrative twists on the formula. Resident Evil Zero’s story switched between two protagonists – cop Rebecca Chambers and convict Billy Coen – and featured a horde of mutant killer leeches.

Code: Veronica was set on a prison island and followed the investigations of brother-sister S.T.A.R.S agents. Both spin-offs were big successes in their day, and both...

Prey at Night Doesnt Try To Be The Strangers and Thats Why It Works
Image
The Strangers franchise seems to like bringing in directors who have made successful shark movies. Before he directed the new trilogy, Renny Harlin did the 1999 aquatic sci-fi/horror Deep Blue Sea and Johannes Roberts helmed the cage dive gone wrong, 47 Meters Down (2017). Both directors know how to deliver popcorn thrills, but of the two, Roberts is the one who gives a unique entry into the Strangers franchise. Bryan Bertino's original 2008 film was bleak and nihilistic, perfect for the time it was released among other gritty horror films when torture porn was popular. But 10 years was enough time to have passed that a sequel didn't have to match the gritty psychological horror tone of the original. Released in 2018, The Strangers: Prey at Night arrived earlier in the same year that saw the Halloween reboot, and both would be early starters to a revival of the slasher subgenre. While the...

Every The Strangers Movie, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
The first film in The Strangers franchise remains the best due to its authentic dread and relatable characters. The newest entry, Chapter 1, offers some solid scares but lacks originality, feeling like a replicated story. The Strangers: Prey at Night falls in the middle of the franchise thanks to its campy '80s vibe.

The Strangers franchise has three movies, and one ranks higher than the rest. The three simple words, "because you were home," sparked fear into the hearts of moviegoers with the release of the first film in 2008, as three masked killers wreaked havoc on a secluded couple with seemingly no motive. The Strangers was loosely based on experiences that director Bryan Bertino had when he was young, and it shot the home invasion subgenre of horror into the spotlight. Not only is that genre still popular 16 years later, but The Strangers franchise is also still going strong.

The...

The Strangers: Chapter 1 Review: Renny Harlin’s Horror Reboot Retreads Old Ground
Image
Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter 1 begins so rotely that it feels like a parody of every bad backwoods horror movie made in the last 50 years. An upwardly mobile young couple, Maya (Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez), are traveling cross-country to Portland for a job interview that Maya has lined up when they decide to make a pit stop for food. Rather than hit the nearest roadside McDonalds, they veer way off their route toward a diner in the tiny town of Venus, Oregon. And wouldn’t you know it, Maya and Ryan’s car breaks down, and since their cell service is spotty, they’re forced to spend the night in Venus. All the while, the town’s largely unwelcoming residents glare at them and mumble about “city folk.”

One diner employee, though, does offer Maya and Ryan some help, pointing them toward a nearby Airbnb cottage. This,...

The Strangers: Chapter 1 Director Teases Plans for New Trilogy
Image
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is the beginning of a new trilogy, with a longer story arc planned over three films. Director Renny Harlin wanted to create a case study of victims and perpetrators, not just a remake or sequel. Starring Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez, the film follows a young couple at an AirBnB stalked by masked killers.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 hits theaters in just a few days, and while the 2008 film that starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman was a contained story from start to finish, this time around its being divided into three parts, with Chapter 1 serving as the first act. The Strangers became a runaway hit in 2008, earning $82 million at the box office against a budget of $9 million. Reviews have been mixed over the years, but its financial success paved the way for a sequel in 2018, with Johannes Roberts directing The Strangers: Prey at Night.

Directed by Renny Harlin,...

47 Meters Down: The Wreck will be launching its sales at the Cannes Market
Image
It’s impressive that despite the massive success of Jaws making its bite mark on pop culture back in 1975, many movies have unapologetically attempted to follow in its footsteps to this very day. One of those films is the 2017 movie 47 Meters Down, which spawned a sequel in 2019, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. A third movie in the series is now set to swim ashore as 47 Meters Down: The Wreck will be launching its sales campaign at the Cannes Market. Johannes Roberts and screenwriter Ernest Riera return to co-write this new installment, which will be directed by veteran horror director Patrick Lussier, whose credits include My Bloody Valentine.

The plot synopsis for the third entry, per Deadline, reads,

“The story will follow a father who is determined to rebuild his relationship with his daughter as they bond during a scuba dive in beautiful tropical waters while exploring a famous shipwreck. But soon after their descent,...
