Anime Professionals Want SAG-AFTRA to Educate Japan's Industry Workers
Image
Representatives of Japanese film and anime hope that the acting union SAG-AFTRA can inject their knowledge into a "crumbling" anime industry.

Discussing the ailing anime industry, Full Frontal sat down with animation director Terumi Nishii and voice actor Ayano Fukumiya. Fukumiya represents Nafca (Nippon Anime & Film Culture Association) and explained to Full Frontal why, despite Nafca being an association of like-minded individuals, it is not a registered union. "Well, a lot of young people are afraid of fighting. But what we’re fighting for is our rights. So first, we need to educate people about history and collective action," she said. "Because if we just start up a union right now, nobody will come. We mustn’t rush and skip the steps."

Death Note, Trigun Stampede Artists Found New Anime Group to Improve Working Conditions
Image
Artists behind hit anime series like Death Note and Trigun Stampede are taking a stand against the dire working conditions of their industry.

According to an article from Anime Corner, these creatives have taken action by forming the Nippon Anime & Film Culture Association (Nafca), an organization dedicated to tackling the issues that make a career in Japanese animation unsustainable. Among its founding members are Masaru Kitao, an animator and lead character designer for Death Note, and Naomichi Yamao, an animation director with numerous credits, including Trigun Stampede, which recently announced the release of a deluxe manga, and Fairy Tail. The group held a press conference yesterday, May 19, in which they proclaimed a need for betting working conditions on the production side of anime and fair compensation for the grueling hours of work animators are required to put in daily.
