Munich-based sales agency Global Screen has sold crime drama “Dark Woods” to streaming service Walter Presents for the U.K., where it’ll be shown on Channel 4’s All 4 platform, and across the Nordic Region, via C More.

The drama, which was produced by ConradFilm and Bavaria Fiction on behalf of Ndr and Ard Degeto for Das Erste, was the most-watched show on Ard’s catch-up service in Germany this year, and was the German TV Award winner.

Julia Weber, head of acquisitions and sales at Global Screen, said: “We are thrilled to announce the acquisition of this highly original and sought-after series, across Scandinavia and in the U.K., where crime drama has proved to be a key genre and is hugely popular with viewers of all ages.”

From one Wwi-set period flick to another, it looks as if Emily Watson is moving from “War Horse” to something set in the same era, but with far less of the treacle from Steven Spielberg’s sentimental war picture.

Watson will be joined by some fine co-stars with Anna Friel and Lena Headey in the black comedy “The Poisoners.” The pitch black comedy centers a group of women left behind in an English farming community during Wwi who then become romantically intertwined with several German prisoners of war. Um, wow. Television writer Paul Billing was behind the pen on this one, and with “Entrapment” and “Creation” director Jon Amiel at the helm, we’ll hope that he treats this sort of dangerous and tantalizing material with a little more grace than he did on the latter Charles Darwin drama that explored the creation of his theory of evolution with almost no tact.

We’ve got a real female triple threat, as Variety reports that Emily Watson, Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies), and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) have all signed for The Poisoners, a period piece written and directed by Jon Amiel (Entrapment, The Core). What kind of period piece might this be? With a story that follows “a group of women who only have German POWs for company when their husbands go off to war,” I’m inclined to guess this is about conflicted love. Only you can decide if that’s a plus or a minus.

No matter what direction they take, though, I’m game for just about any film that brings these three together — if you’ve seen them all in action, you know how promising that lineup really is. (And if you haven’t, let me just say the promise is there. In large quantities.) At least The Poisoners will be well-acted.

Three lovely British actresses, Emily Watson, Anna Friel, and Lena Headey have signed on to star in The Poisoners.  THR describes The Poisoners as "a dark comedy about women left behind in an English farming community during World War I who become involved with several German prisoners-of-war."  I am intrigued by the logline---or really anything that can be pitched as a dark war comedy---especially with such a winning cast.  Ken Duken, Hanno Koffler, and Alexander Scheer co-star, presumably as the German POWs.  Jon Amiel (Creation) will direct from a script by Paul Billing.  Jeanna Polley is producing through her aptly named company The Producers.  Filming begins this summer in Ireland in Germany.

A brand new trailer and new images for The Red Baron has been released on Apple. The movie has been made by independent production company, Montery Media Inc. If you love your planes and dogfights from WW1 in particular then this one is for you. It looks fantastic and the attention to detail looks phenomenal although I think the trailer loses it’s way slightly towards the end. The images look lovely in high resolution.
