“Babylon Berlin” Season 4 TV Review
Image

“Babylon Berlin,” the most expensive series in the history of German television, continues in Season 4 to take us through 1930s Germany, including all its glory juxtaposed with the foreboding of horrors to come. Production quality of the first three seasons is not only maintained but expanded in a number of impressive scenes. Below is the link to last month’s review of the earlier years, bringing you up to speed: https://www.wearemoviegeeks.com/2024/05/babylon-berlin-seasons-2-3-tv-series-review.

Much of the cast returns, with the primary focus remaining on Rath and Charlotte, imposing more dramatic ups and downs on them than before. The action starts on 1930’s New Years Eve and runs through much of 1931. The Nazi honchos are dripping with even more evil – some via political manipulations; others, including many of the cops,...

Munich-based sales agency Global Screen has sold crime drama “Dark Woods” to streaming service Walter Presents for the U.K., where it’ll be shown on Channel 4’s All 4 platform, and across the Nordic Region, via C More.

The drama, which was produced by ConradFilm and Bavaria Fiction on behalf of Ndr and Ard Degeto for Das Erste, was the most-watched show on Ard’s catch-up service in Germany this year, and was the German TV Award winner.

Julia Weber, head of acquisitions and sales at Global Screen, said: “We are thrilled to announce the acquisition of this highly original and sought-after series, across Scandinavia and in the U.K., where crime drama has proved to be a key genre and is hugely popular with viewers of all ages.”

The show, inspired by real-life-events, starts out in the summer of 1989, when the sister of high-ranking Hamburg police officer Thomas...

Martina Gedeck, Sebastian Koch, and Ulrich Mühe in The Lives of Others (2006)
Oscar-Nominated ‘Never Look Away’ Arrives In Theaters; ‘The Invisibles’ Appears – Specialty B.O. Preview
Martina Gedeck, Sebastian Koch, and Ulrich Mühe in The Lives of Others (2006)
German filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmark made a splash in the foreign language box office over a decade ago with The Lives of Others, which took the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. He is back again with Sony Pictures Classics for Never Look Away, which is also vying for Oscar this year. Also out in theaters beginning Friday is Greenwich Entertainment’s WWII-era drama, The Invisibles, which was the first pick up for the company back in 2017. And on a decidedly different note, Cinedigm is mixing camp and horror with Dead Ant starring Tom Arnold and Sean Astin.

Also this weekend, Focus Features is taking Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman back to theaters following its six Oscar nominations. The company said the film, which grossed over $48.5M in its initial run in theaters starting last August, will play 168 theaters around the country beginning Friday. Said Focus president Lisa Bunnell, “We...

Official Trailer for German Art History Epic Drama 'Never Look Away'
"By freeing yourselves, you are liberating the world." Sony Classics has debuted an official Us trailer for the German film Never Look Away, originally titled Werk Ohne Autor in German - which means Work Without Author, essentially "Anonymous". The 3-hour long film spans 3 eras in German history, following a young German painter who becomes an artist and spends decades attempting to find the real meaning in his work. Tom Schilling stars as Kurt Barnert, and Paula Beer plays his wife Ellie. The plot involves a doctor who worked for the Nazis hiding his past, and Kurt discovering who he is but deciding how to deal with this realization. Never Look Away also stars Sebastian Koch, Saskia Rosendahl, Oliver Masucci, Ulrike C. Tscharre, and Hanno Koffler. I saw this in Venice, and it's a wonderful film, very deeply inspiring and engaging despite its extensive running time. If you think of yourself an artist at all,...

Shirley Temple, Thomas Beck, Jean Hersholt, and Helen Westley in Heidi (1937)
Studiocanal to co-produce, sell German children's classic
Shirley Temple, Thomas Beck, Jean Hersholt, and Helen Westley in Heidi (1937)
The Little Witch (Die Kleine Hexe) will star German actress Karoline Herfurth and reunite the production team behind local box office hit Heidi.

Studiocanal is to co-produce and handle world sales on the first German live-action film adaptation of Otfried Preussler’s children’s classic The Little Witch (Die Kleine Hexe).

Published in 1957, Preussler’s tale centres on a witch who is a mere one hundred and twenty-seven years old and thus deemed too young to be allowed to dance with the others on the Hill of Witches during Walpurgis Night (30 April).

Before she can prove to the chief witch that she has what it takes to become a good witch, she must hone her magic skills, but she hadn’t reckoned with the mean weather witch Rumpumpel using every means to prevent her reaching her goal.

Studiocanal’s German production arm, Studiocanal Film, will co-produce with Munich-based Claussen+Putz Filmproduktion and Switzerland’s Zodiac Pictures after last...

Jon Amiel’s Wwi Black Comedy, ‘The Poisoners,’ Casts Emily Watson, Anna Friel, and Lena Headey
There’s nothing quite like applying humor to a horrific slice of history to give new blood to some well-tread territory – thus a “pitch black comedy” set during Wwi that centers on romantic affairs between sworn enemies. The Playlist reports that director Jon Amiel‘s film, The Poisoners, has lined up a really wonderful cast to give some laughs (and love) to the Wwi-set story. Coming from script by television writer Paul Billing, the film follows “a group of women left behind in an English farming community during Wwi who then become romantically intertwined with several German prisoners of war.” So, like, reverse In the Land of Bloody and Honey? The film’s cast now includes Emily Watson, Anna Friel, and Lena Headey as just some of those British ladies who fall in love with their apparent enemies. They will be joined by German actors Ken Duken, Hanno Koffler, and Alexander Scheer so, at...

Emily Watson, Anna Friel & Lena Headey Will Fall In Love With POWs In 'The Poisoners'
From one Wwi-set period flick to another, it looks as if Emily Watson is moving from “War Horse” to something set in the same era, but with far less of the treacle from Steven Spielberg’s sentimental war picture.

Watson will be joined by some fine co-stars with Anna Friel and Lena Headey in the black comedy “The Poisoners.” The pitch black comedy centers a group of women left behind in an English farming community during Wwi who then become romantically intertwined with several German prisoners of war. Um, wow. Television writer Paul Billing was behind the pen on this one, and with “Entrapment” and “Creation” director Jon Amiel at the helm, we’ll hope that he treats this sort of dangerous and tantalizing material with a little more grace than he did on the latter Charles Darwin drama that explored the creation of his theory of evolution with almost no tact.

Emily Watson, Anna Friel, and Lena Headey Assemble for ‘The Poisoners’
We’ve got a real female triple threat, as Variety reports that Emily Watson, Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies), and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) have all signed for The Poisoners, a period piece written and directed by Jon Amiel (Entrapment, The Core). What kind of period piece might this be? With a story that follows “a group of women who only have German POWs for company when their husbands go off to war,” I’m inclined to guess this is about conflicted love. Only you can decide if that’s a plus or a minus.

No matter what direction they take, though, I’m game for just about any film that brings these three together — if you’ve seen them all in action, you know how promising that lineup really is. (And if you haven’t, let me just say the promise is there. In large quantities.) At least The Poisoners will be well-acted.

Emily Watson, Anna Friel, and Lena Headey to Star in Wwi Dark Comedy The Poisoners
Three lovely British actresses, Emily Watson, Anna Friel, and Lena Headey have signed on to star in The Poisoners.  THR describes The Poisoners as "a dark comedy about women left behind in an English farming community during World War I who become involved with several German prisoners-of-war."  I am intrigued by the logline---or really anything that can be pitched as a dark war comedy---especially with such a winning cast.  Ken Duken, Hanno Koffler, and Alexander Scheer co-star, presumably as the German POWs.  Jon Amiel (Creation) will direct from a script by Paul Billing.  Jeanna Polley is producing through her aptly named company The Producers.  Filming begins this summer in Ireland in Germany.

Trailer & Images from The Red Baron
A brand new trailer and new images for The Red Baron has been released on Apple. The movie has been made by independent production company, Montery Media Inc. If you love your planes and dogfights from WW1 in particular then this one is for you. It looks fantastic and the attention to detail looks phenomenal although I think the trailer loses it’s way slightly towards the end. The images look lovely in high resolution. I’ve placed them below but you can head over to Apple to view both the trailer and images in hi-def.

The Red Baron (Der rote Baron) is directed by Nikolai Müllerschön and includes a cast of Matthias Schweighöfer, Til Schweiger, Lena Headey and Joseph Fiennes.

Synopsis: Europe, 1916. Baron Manfred von Richthofen (Matthias SCHWEIGHÖFER) is, at the age of just 24, the crack pilot of the German aerial combat forces – a legend in his own time,...
