Variety reports that Peacock has also decided to cancel the coming-of-age Satanic Panic thriller series Hysteria! after just one season.

We feared this day would come, and now it’s finally here. A new horror series that premiered last year has been axed, and it didn't deserve to meet such an untimely end. It had such potential, and it sucks that we won’t get to see where the story could have gone. Sadly, Peacock has pulled the plug on the horror comedy Hysteria! after only one season, and now fans are left to mourn what could have been.

This disappointing news comes only a month after it was revealed that Peacock had canceled another one of its new horror shows from last year. It was the sci-fi horror Teacup. The streaming giant has never come out and shared why it decided to cancel this series, but low viewership is believed to have played a significant role in the decision. Peacock continues its cancellation streak with its coming-of-age Satanic Panic thriller series “Hysteria!” after one season, Variety reports. The news arrives just weeks after the streamer canceled sci-fi horror series “Teacup“.

The series premiered in October 2024, and all eight episodes are now available to stream.

Written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman (The Orville), “Hysteria!” highlights America’s dark history of mass hysteria through ’80s Satanic Panic. It’s framed through a teen coming-of-age story centered around a trio of high school misfits caught up in a wave of dangerous hysteria.

Peacock is not proceeding with a second season of thriller drama Hysteria!, Deadline has confirmed. The news comes 3½ months after the eight-episode first season was released as a binge drop on October 18.

It is not surprising as the series starring Julie Bowen and Anna Camp didn’t manage to make noise like other recent Peacock entries, including The Day Of the Jackal and Apples Never Fall. The decision follows the recent cancellation of another Peacock October release, horror drama Teacup.

The Peacock horror thriller series “Hysteria!” has been canceled after just one season, Variety has learned exclusively.

The show aired its one and only season at the streamer in October 2024. It had originally been ordered to series in August 2022 and began production in 2023, but was forced to shut down after filming just a few episodes due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. It eventually resumed production in late 2023.

Peacock does not release viewership data for its shows, so it is difficult to gauge exactly how many people watched “Hysteria!” However, the show did not make an appearance on the weekly Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts upon its release. It was well-received by critics though, holding a 91% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Smallville almost introduced an entirely different version of the show's Justice League in its tenth and final season. Bryan Q. Miller, who was a writer and story editor on The CW series, recently opened up about the idea behind the scrapped episode.

Miller shared the plans for the scrapped "female Justice League" episode during a recent appearance on the Super House of El podcast (via KryptonSite). The episode would have seen main character Lois Lane (Erica Durance) teaming up with previous guest stars Kara Kent (Laura Vandervoort), Zatanna (Serinda Swan), and Jayna (Allison Scagliotti) of the Wonder Twins to save the day. "Being able to put those characters together that we had played with individually was a lot of fun, and it went away," Miller recalled.

Smallville remains one of the most beloved comic book TV shows ever made and, for many DC fans, Tom Welling is their Man of Steel and Michael Rosenbaum is the Lex Luthor. There were also several strong female leads, a surprise given when the show was produced. 

Smallville had a lengthy run, kicking off in 2001 before wrapping up in 2011 following a memorable 10 seasons (which somehow didn't see Clark Kent take flight and suit up until the final episode). Still, fans were left eager for more and eventually got a comic book sequel detailing the hero's early adventures as Superman. 

There never were any spin-offs - it's easy to imagine things being different had the show been produced today - but we did come close to seeing an episode revolving around a "female Justice League."

Some sci-fi TV shows have gotten even better with time and make for a great re-watch. One of the most entertaining things about watching an older sci-fi show or movie is to see how they envisage the future. Back to the Future has proved that self-tying shoes and flying cars may not be one of humanity's top priorities, but watching a show about the future, made in the past, can be both frightening and hilarious.

Viewers have also always been curious about discovering other planets or alternate realities. Some series tend to tackle the subject with care and trepidation, while others focus on a more lighthearted approach. But, the true beauty of the best sci-fi shows is embracing all the suspension of disbelief that the genre so graciously offers. While some classics like Star Trek don't even need to be mentioned, some relatively old shows from the last 20 years or so shouldn't be forgotten either.

There are several incredible sci-fi shows that see long runs on television, airing without seeing a single bad season. This is in stark contrast to the trend that seems to be developing more and more as of late, where sci-fi shows that don't deserve to be canceled are prematurely ended, and other underappreciated sci-fi shows never get the recognition they deserve. Although some long-running sci-fi shows like Doctor Who have been panned in recent years for poorly written seasons, many sci-fi shows with five seasons or more retain a consistent standard.

Though there are many incredible sci-fi movies set to release in 2025, sometimes a sci-fi TV show with plenty of episodes is exactly what a viewer needs. I don't know if it's just because I'm really missing the show or there's more to it, but watching the Hysteria! on Peacock trailer is just giving me Stranger Things vibes and I'm so here for it. And though the Netflix series is already dark, this one looks to be even darker. So I think that if you're a fellow Stranger Things fan like me, you'll want to check out Hysteria! too!

The streamer has released a full trailer for the show, which premieres Oct. 18 and centers on three high schoolers (Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia and Kezii Curtis) whose heavy-metal band decides to lean into the fear caused when the high school quarterback goes missing and a pentagram is painted on the teen’s garage. Their makeover as satanists, however, unleashes forces — both among their peers and, possibly, with something otherworldly — that soon spin out of their control.

All episodes of Hysteria! will be available on Peacock beginning October 18th. Additionally, USA Network and Syfy will air the first episode on October 18th, with subsequent episodes airing each following Friday on USA Network, giving viewers several options to watch the new series that stars Julie Bowen and also features Bruce Campbell as a recurring guest star.

Peacock, fresh off its huge Olympics surge, is transitioning back to its regular offerings — including a 1980s-set thriller revolving around the Satanic Panic of the era.

The streamer has released a teaser and set an Oct. 18 premiere date for Hysteria!, a drama in which a high-school heavy metal band decides to capitalize on the panic — then find themselves in deeper than they meant to be. In addition to streaming on Peacock, the series premiere will simulcast on USA Network and Syfy; USA will also air subsequent episodes on Friday nights.

Julie Bowen is returning to TV in Peacock’s “Hysteria!” and things are getting spooky, that is, if they’re even real.

In the teaser for “Hysteria!,” released Monday, the “Modern Family” star goes about her day cooking and cleaning as a 1980s housewife until a strange interruption causes the lights to flicker and her house to shake.

By the time the event stops, Bowen thinks she’s in the clear — until she spots the face of a demon in her microwave, which proceeds to splatter into red globs.

The new series, which also stars Anna Camp (“Pitch Perfect”) and Bruce Campbell (“The Evil Dead,” “Army of Darkness”), will debut on Friday, Oct. 18, on Peacock, USA Network and Syfy.
