Fathom Entertainment brings Ick to select theatres in New York and Los Angeles for a one-week theatrical run starting Thursday, July 24, before expanding to theaters nationwide July 27-29.
In the film, “For almost two decades, a viscous vine-like growth known colloquially as ‘The Ick’ has benignly crept into every nook and cranny of American life while the residents of small town Eastbrook remain blasé about its existence. The exceptions are former high school football star-turned-hapless science teacher Hank (Routh) and his sardonically perceptive student Grace (Weissman), who are thrown together by Grace’s mom Staci’s (Suvari) closely-guarded secret and a mutual suspicion that the Ick is about to unleash some monstrous mayhem.

‘The Life of Chuck’ Contains Multitudes ‘The Life of Chuck’, based on Stephen King’s 2020 novella, director Mike Flanagan crafts a reverse-chronological odyssey through the life of Charles “Chuck” Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). It is an elegiac meditation on memory, mortality, and moments of transcendence. The story begins at the end- amidst Chuck’s final moments and a world seemingly unraveling- then winds backward through three interwoven acts that explore his adulthood, childhood, and the threads that connect them. Tom Hiddleston leads a powerhouse ensemble, including Mark Hamill as Chuck’s loving but complicated grandfather Albie, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Marty Anderson, a kind and reflective teacher, and Karen Gillan as a tirelessly busy nurse- perhaps the film’s quietest reflection of our current climate of collective burnout and emotional fatigue. Tom Hiddleston plays Chuck with a kind of weary grace- a quiet, inward ache. His post-Marvel trajectory has been refreshingly unpredictable,...

Dara Horn has won three National Jewish Book Awards, and she has now released her first graphic novel, One Little Goat, drawn by Theo Ellsworth, and Cbr has an exclusive excerpt from the acclaimed new Passover-themed graphic novel for middle-schoolers, which is out in plenty of time for this year's Passover.

The book is a celebration of Jewish tradition, and shows the history of the Jewish faith, which, in turn, is a spotlight on the power of Jewish resilience throughout history, but obviously framed through a story involving a talking goat so that the comic can appeal to its young audience.

YA – or Young Adult – books are not only popular amongst teenagers. Over time, the genre has become a staple for readers of all ages, and it has inspired a variety of movies and television shows. With the latest Hunger Games novel hitting shelves this week, it seems prudent to look back on some of the best fantasy films and shows adapted from YA novels.
The genre has long represented teenagers and the embarrassing, sometimes horrific, trials of young adulthood. For those who once wandered their school hallways without clear direction, these novels continue to offer an escape, or a way of being seen and relating to others across time and distance.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon is one of the weakest films in the franchise, meaning its place on this list might seem confusing.

When it comes to revisiting the gateway horror media that haunted our youth, we often find ourselves baffled by the silly and often laughable things that used to scare us. However, sometimes the opposite is true. Sometimes we look back on a piece of media that we enjoyed as children only to realize that it was much darker than our naïve brains could fully comprehend at the time.
A great example of this is Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, a series of Young Adult novels defined by their generally gothic tone and frequent use of gallows humor. While these books were a tremendous hit among the Scholastic crowd (and often served as a dreary substitute for kids who weren’t into Harry Potter), they also contained numerous gruesome deaths and genuinely disturbing plot points that still distress readers to this day. And with the 2000s seeing a...

A snail-obsessed introvert struggles with loneliness, hoarding and personal tragedy in Adam Elliot’s bleak stop-motion epic. Here’s our Memoir Of A Snail review.
Grace Pudel (Sarah Snook) is not one of life’s winners. Born with a cleft lip and the playground bullying that often comes with it, she spends a lonely, but contented childhood with her twin brother, Gilbert (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and paraplegic, alcoholic father, Percy (Dominique Pinon). When circumstances find her separated from both and sent to live with a pair of swingers in Canberra, she copes about as well as you’d expect.
Australian stop-motion whizz Adam Elliot’s sophomore feature is an Aardman tale with the edges left rough. The Claymation style is thick, dirty and often borderline disturbing – more in line with the genre’s uncanny origins than the higher framerate aesthetic coming out of the medium’s biggest players. There are some...

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has given Jim Carrey the best Rotten Tomatoes streak of his entire career. Though Jim Carrey is most known for his 1900s hits, which include Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, Liar Liar, and The Truman Show, his practice stood strong as far as the late-2000s before hitting a rough patch of roles that lasted over 10 years. With Dr. Robotnik, the actor returned to his signature physical and cartoonish comedy, proving he’s still got that charm and talent that won people’s hearts so long ago.
The actor’s commitment to the franchise has been made evident time and time again, as Jim Carrey has repeatedly broken career rules for Sonic the Hedgehog so that he can come back to reprise his now iconic role. Considered one of the movies that defined Jim Carrey’s career, Sonic the Hedgehog and its sequels continue...

Jim Carrey's divisive Christmas movie has become a streaming hit 24 years after its original release. The comedic actor rose to stardom during the 1990s with a series of box office hits, starting with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber (all released in 1994), followed by Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Batman Forever (both in 1995). These hits made Carrey one of the highest-paid comedic actors, starting with the slightly darker comedy, The Cable Guy, in 1996 and Liar Liar in 1997.
Carrey's success as a leading comedic actor continued well into the 2000s, starting with How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000, which became the second highest-grossing Christmas movie of all time, and continued with Bruce Almighty, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Yes Man in the following years. In 2009, Carrey played multiple characters in the 3D animated adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens story, A Christmas Carol,...

Sonic the Hedgehog 3introduces a myriad of new threats to the franchise's universe, including both fresh foes and unlikely alliances. In a way, Jim Carrey'sDr. Ivo Robotnik is a heroin the latest film, joining up with Team Sonic to take down Shadow, a dangerous, escaped military experiment. Many cast members have returned alongside Carrey, like James Marsden as Sonic's adopted father, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Ben Schwartz as the speedy titular hedgehog, and Keanu Reeves has come on board to play the aforementioned new villain.
Though Ivo and Team Sonic have put aside their differences, the same can't be said for the entire Robotnik family. In this installment, Ivo is reunited with his grandfather Gerald, and the pair don't always see eye to eye. With this addition, Carrey often acts in scenes with himself in Sonic 3, in some ways pushing his acting to new limits. Team Sonic and...

Jim Carrey is set to play 2 different Robotnik characters in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and his role in another movie released in 2004 proves he's more than up for it. The third movie in the Sonic franchise sees Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles facing off against a new foe, Shadow the Hedgehog, who vows to get revenge on humanity. Their attempts to stop Shadow are thwarted by the return of Doctor Robotnik and his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik. Sonic 3's trailer shows Shadow's dark origins and sees Carrey take on the dual roles of both Robotniks.
Although he initially considered retirement in 2022, Jim Carrey ultimately decided to return for Sonic 3 and reprise his role as Doctor Robotnik. Robotnik's return in Sonic 3 is a career first for Carrey, as it is the first time that he has ever played the same character three times in different movies. The popular 2005 police procedural series "Bones" is full of murder, gore, desiccated corpses, and ... bones. Most episodes begin with the two main characters, "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), coming across a corpse, often discovered in an unusual or disturbing death pose. The two agents, backed up by a team of passionate pathologists, will then reverse-engineer the circumstances of the corpse's death and determine the depth of foul play involved. There was typically a great deal of foul play involved.
Like other violent shows about death, murder, and corpses, "Bones" was ideal comfort viewing. Despite all the blood, violence, and misery, "Bones" often skewed tonally light, usually involving eccentric side characters and flippant gallows quips. Also, Bones and Brennan typically solved the mysteries of the rotten cadavers, displaying a police investigative system that worked as perfectly as it was designed to.

Hellboy's Mike Mignola recently reflected on the film franchise spawned by his creation, revealing his frustrations with Hellboy II: The Golden Army. The acclaimed Hellboy creator stated he was "unhappy with the movie" and that the three months he spent collaborating with Guillermo del Toro "didn't really impact" the 2008 sequel.
In an interview with Screen Rant for his upcoming documentary Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, Mignola discussed his experience working on The Golden Army and his dislike for the film. "I like being left alone to produce work that I can control. The experience I had on the second movie, I spent three months working on (The Golden Army), and it didn't really impact that film very much at all," he said.

Warning: This article discusses topics of violence and war.
There are plenty of excellent kids books from the 2000s that are worth curling up and reading, even years later. The noughties is a great era in general, but especially in fiction across all literary genres. Some of the best lengthy book franchises and sagas ever are 00s releases, such as the Horus Heresy novels and The Mortal Instruments series. Titles that are geared toward the younger generations, however, are especially prominent.
Its worth noting that, like any genre, some classic kids' books from the 2000s have aged poorly. While not every story is still appropriate in an ever-changing world, there are several childrens novels that work well in the present well. From their compelling and relatable characters to the fictional universes full of wonder and intrigue, these kids books from the 2000s are absolutely worth checking out if you havent read them before.

Just recently released by Beehive Books, following a successful Kickstarter campaign, Pinocchio: The Illuminated Edition is a uniquely immersive experience that I'd highly recommed to Daily Dead readers. Not just a traditional reprint of Carlo Collodi's work, this "Illuminated Edition" has Mike Mignola teaming up with Lemony Snicket for illustrations and handwritten commentary that create an all-together new experience for this classic tale.
Whether you're a long-time fan of Pinocchio or are reading the story for the first time, The Illuminated Edition offer something new and exciting, and Beehive Books have really produced a high-quality edition that you can proudly display in any book collection. As someone who has read the original book, and have seen many adaptations over the years, I was impressed by how new this story felt with accompanied by Mignola's vision for the characters and the world, combined with Snicket's commentary. Spooky season is nearly here.
And Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, has just unveiled its Halloween programming line-up, full of tricks and treats from the studio’s back catalog, as well as two new series (“Teacup” and “Hysteria!”) for some fresh scares.
In 2022 and ’23, there was at least one big Blumhouse movie that simultaneously debuted on Peacock — in ’22, it was David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capping “Halloween Ends” and last year, it was the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. This year doesn’t have anything quite like that, but it’s still a powerful collection of titles for every viewer.
The Sept. 1 batch includes classics like “Bride of Frankenstein,” “It Came From Outer Space” and “Werewolf of London;” 1980s favorites like “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “The Funhouse” and “The Thing;” along with more modern hits like the original “Candyman,” Jordan Peele’s “Us” and several entries in the “Saw” franchise.

When you’re looking for more than defiant princesses, Minions, and martial arts-wielding animals, indie animation is where you can experience something outside the box. Fortunately, Madman and IFC Films are here to present the Memoir of a Snail teaser trailer, which previews a wonderfully strange-looking animated feature from Academy Award-winning director Adam Elliot.
In the Memoir of a Snail teaser trailer, Grace Pudle is separated from her twin brother Gilbert following their parents’ deaths. Unfortunately for Grace, things don’t get much better after that, and the only one who will listen to her tragic tale is a garden snail named Sylvia.
Here’s the official synopsis for Memoir of a Snail:
“Grace Pudel is a lonely misfit with an affinity for collecting ornamental snails and an intense love for books. At a young age, when Grace is separated from her twin brother Gilbert, she falls into a spiral of anxiety and angst.

When you hear the name Seth MacFarlane, you’ll probably know that you’re in for some borderline humor that does hit the spot but not always in the way you’d expect. MacFarlane is funny, which cannot be denied, but his humor has been divisive from the very beginning. Whether it’s Ted, his Oscar hosting gig, or his most famous work, the adult animated series Family Guy, MacFarlane certainly knows how to draw attention to himself. The latter series has, despite all the praise directed at it, often been criticized for its humor and how it tends to take things too far, especially when sensitive social issues are concerned.
Now, this report isn’t about MacFarlane directly, but it is about another Family Guy character, the paraplegic macho police officer Joe Swanson, who is voiced by one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces and voices, Patrick Warburton. The...

Scarlett Johansson's performance brings life to Samantha and explores the complexities of human connection in a technologically advanced future. Lemony Snicket in "A Series of Unfortunate Events" never physically appears but guides the audience through the events with his voice.
