Soul Coughing Perform “Super Bon Bon” on Kimmel: Watch
Image
The newly reunited Soul Coughing appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to deliver a rendition of their 1996 classic, “Super Bon Bon.”

Taking the Kimmel stage donned in black outfits, the band brought the song to life, with bassist Sebastian Steinberg providing the repeating upright bass riff. Overtop, frontman Mike Doughty commanded the stage with a cool confidence, singing the lyrics with a ‘90s brand of nonchalance, which now lands as a welcome burst of nostalgia.

The 24 Hour Plays Celebrates 24 Years With The Return Of The 24 Hour Musicals
The 24 Hour Musicals will return better than ever this year.

The 24 Hour Musicals feature four new musicals written and performed in the span of just 24 hours. The marathon process begins at 9 Pm the night before the performance. Writers, composers, directors, choreographers, actors, music directors, musicians and production staff — many of whom have never worked with or met each other before — gather for an orientation where they share costume pieces and props, their special skills and reveal something that they have always wanted to do on stage. At 11 Pm, composers and writers get to work crafting 15-20 minute musicals overnight and at 9 Am the next morning, actors receive their roles and directors, choreographers and musicians arrive to begin rehearsal. Less than 12 hours later, they’ll perform in front of a live audience!

Proceeds from The 24 Hour Musicals benefit The 24 Hour Plays’ programs, including The 24 Hour Plays: Nationals (a professional intensive for...

Mike Doughty wants to re-record some of the old Soul Coughing songs he hates
One-time Soul Coughing singer Mike Doughty has maintained for years now that his tenure in the group was pretty much hell, and that the work he produced on records like Ruby Vroom and El Oso is absolutely not, in any way, what he wants to be known for. Still, fans cling to tracks like “Circles” and “Super Bon Bon,” so Doughty has launched a PledgeMusic campaign to raise money to re-record the songs in the manner he originally envisioned—before, as he says in a press release, “they entered the dysfunctional fray of the band.” Doughty’s written a whole ...

Mike Doughty will send you a personalized song message for just $35,335.53
Mike Doughty apparently thinks a lot of himself. The ex-Soul Coughing frontman is selling personalized versions of one of his unreleased songs for $35,335.53. For roughly the price of a 2013 Chrysler 300 C Sedan, Doughty will record “Dogs/Demons"—a song he’s also never played live—onto a digital recorder, then add a personalized message. Buyers also have the option to choose the song’s key (C, D, or D-sharp), as well as whether they want the song to have a bridge. Doughty will then send the recorder itself, signed and numbered by Doughty, straight to ...

James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Favorite Songs From Memorable TV Moments
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Of course, love of a TV show stems from the stories and characters; but there's no denying the important role music plays in a scene. Shows like "The Oc" and "Grey's Anatomy" know this all too well.

When Marissa shot Trey on "The Oc" and Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek" played in the background, a pop culture frenzy ensued. On "Grey's," the moment that won Katherine Heigl her Emmy was partly in thanks to Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars": As Izzie lay in the arms of her dead fiance (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) she couldn't save, the lyrics, ''Would you lie with me, and just forget the world'' punctuated the sorrowful moment.

Or who could forget that final scene of "The Sopranos," featuring the Journey classic "Don't Stop Believin'"? The song was back on the iTunes charts for weeks afterwards and because of that infamous series finale when the...

New Rock Music Release Roundup
Nada Surf: The Stars Are Indifferent to Astrology (Barsuk)

I know it's early, but this sure feels like the album of the year. In fact, I'm even ready to crown this the power pop album of the decade. Oh, there's an occasional ballad ("When I Was Young" is especially notable) that reminds of Matthew Caws's twee side, but mostly this rocks out, with guest Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Cobra Verde, Death of Samantha, etc.) an important presence -- that wild guitar on "Teenage Dreams" has gotta be him. Rarely has bittersweet sounded so tough. Nada Surf's made lots of excellent albums, but this is their best yet. A limited edition version comes with a second disc containing acoustic versions of five of the album's songs.

Sharon van Etten: Tramp (Jagjaguwar)

I understood why van Etten was a Brooklyn indie fave already based on her earlier releases:...

Best Rock, Pop, Electronica, and Soul Albums of 2011
1. Pj Harvey: Let England Shake (Vagrant/Island)

A great concept album, a statement about England's proclivity for war and how it has costs both (more or less) countable -- lives, injuries -- and unquantifiable: shattered psyches and tainted national morality. That Harvey is able to do this not in essays but in songs, including some of the best in her long and distinguished career, is an achievement that has eluded many. I wrote about this album at greater length in a review early this year.

2. Dum Dum Girls: Only in Dreams (SubPop)

There are a lot of bands doing the updated '60s girl sound thing, but none more compellingly than this one. Because without good songs, a sound is merely a signifier of taste, an empty vessel. Leader Kristen Gundred Aka Dee Dee writes excellent songs, then plays them with a sonically riveting style.

3. Mimi Goese & Ben Neill:...

Mike Doughty: Yes and Also Yes (Snackbar)

Doughty has now had a solo career longer than that of his old band Soul Coughing, so it's past time to consider him on his own merits. Sc was important in its time, but I enjoy this album more than anything they did. There was an extent to which Sc was only as good as its sound/production (which was great, then), but Doughty's evolution since then, stripping back his sound to a slightly more traditional style, has more depth. Not that there's That much difference. It's still about witty lyrics that underneath the chuckles offer genuine profundity, a delivery that's natural yet emphatic, and a musical style that's rooted in folk music but far more rhythmically acute (there's a band on many tracks here, even strings, but even when it's just Doughty and his acoustic guitar, there's an underlying funkiness), a...

Wood, Danes, Sedgwick sign up for 24 Hour Plays
Some of entertainment's biggest names - including Elijah Wood, Julia Stiles, America Ferrera, Claire Danes, Christopher Meloni, Leslie Bibb, and Kyra Sedgwick - have signed up to be frazzled.

They'll be appearing next month in the 10th annual benefit 24 Hour Plays on Broadway, which tasks 24 actors, six writers and six directors to come up with six original short plays over the course of a day.

"It's pure chaos," Rosie Perez, who has acted in the project every year, said Monday. "I tell all the actors when we begin, 'You will probably have a nervous breakdown. It's normal - go with it. If you're not having a nervous breakdown or some type of anxiety attack, you're doing something wrong.'"

The playwrights who have agreed to participate include Kristoffer Diaz (The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity), singer-songwriter Mike Doughty, Rajiv Joseph (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo), Lynn Nottage (Ruined) and...

Tom Waits
Cold War Kids announce new album for you and 'Yours,' plus tour dates
Tom Waits
This morning I've been listening to the new album from Kings of Leon, in preparation for reviewing "Come Around Sundown" for Monday. I also wrote a little bit about Tom Waits this morning. And Mike Doughty, bless his heart, came up in the mix at the bar last night and Third Eye Blind was nearly vetoed from a '90s radio rock-themed road mixtape my friends and I blasted this past weekend. I still feel a little bad about how much I didn't like Norah Jones' contribution to Belle & Sebastian, reviewed earlier this week. What do all these artists have in common?...

Mike Doughty to Release Sad Man Happy Man in Oct.
Ever since Soul Coughing found its way into our heads with the sly jazz rhythms of "Super Bon Bon" back in 1996, then-frontman Mike Doughty's been a musical character to watch. He's the type of musician just as apt to have a great conversation about Young Jeezy as to write a great song about twisted perceptions of the world.

A year and half after his last solo effort, the beautifully twisted Golden Delicious, Doughty's back for another bite with Sad Man Happy Man, which drops Oct. 6 on Ato.

Mike Doughty's Top 12 Cheap Videos
Check out the world premiere of Mike's new video "Put It Down."

What the world needs now is videos, cheap videos. MTV doesn't play them, and VH1 only plays them before noon on weekdays, but we're still watching them, on YouTube and everywhere else. Before the record business started tanking, they were laying out big bucks for mega-productions; now budgets are more modest. Rightfully so, I think; one of the worst things to happen to videos was when, as the art of video-making started to come into its own, MTV began putting the names of the directors on the video, right under the song title and record company credit. On the positive side, this began a kind of auteur era in videos -- Mark Romanek, Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Hype Williams -- but, the music business being the music business, once they saw that one guy had a hit using a certain video director,...

Several of the performers are moonlighting actors, including Stone, Schuyler Fisk ("Orange County") and musicians led by Patrick Fugit ("Almost Famous"), who are appearing in one of Sundance's Dramatic Competition films, the suicide-themed "Wristcutters: A Love Story". The performing rights organization ASCAP is producing the event for the eighth consecutive year with the goal of mingling filmmakers with composers and songwriters to encourage onscreen collaborations.
