In the last two years, Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson went to hell and back twice. First, she had hip-replacement surgery to repair damage she suffered from a 2016 onstage fall. Then last year, her other hip broke, and she went through surgery and recovery again.
Today, she’s healed up and her band has a great new album, Let All That We Imagine Be the Light, out this week and a summer tour on the horizon. “I am alive and kicking — if not as high,” Manson says, sounding especially cheery, on...

Shirley Manson says it plainly in the chorus to Garbage’s new single: “Get out of my face, don’t mess with me, we’re exhausted.” She’s totally over hearing your patriarchal complaints about your problems on “Get Out My Face Aka Bad Kitty,” the second single off the band’s upcoming Let All That We Imagine Be the Light, but at least she delivers the news in a memorable way. The song has an urgency to it, but also plenty of catchy pop hooks (even the background vocals,...

Garbage are back to share their new song “Get Out My Face Aka Bad Kitty.”
“Get Out My Face Aka Bad Kitty” serves as the latest single for Garbage’s upcoming new album Let All That We Imagine Be the Light, which arrives on May 30th. It’s a thumping, brooding new track from the LA-based rockers, with vocalist Shirley Manson skewering an unnamed toxic character and railing against the ongoing war on women in America.

“You have your big dick/ We’re just little fish/ But every wave will wash away,” Manson warns before launching into a furious chorus: “Get out my face/ Don’t mess with me/ We’re exhausted (get out),” later announcing “You won’t respect us/ I’ll make you fear us” and “If you can’t join ‘em/ You gotta beat ‘em.” Meanwhile, the band plays a taut, menacing groove...

Garbage are back with the brand new song “There’s No Future In Optimism,” along with its accompanying music video. The track is the latest single from the band’s upcoming new album Let All That We Imagine Be the Light.
A pulsing, electronically-backed alternative rock tune, “There’s No Future In Optimism” is a politically-charged anthem that, ironically, argues against its eye-catching title. It’s bleak but not hopeless, which is made all the more clear when supplemented by the dystopian imagery of the music video. Watch it below.

“I love the title,” frontwoman Shirley Manson said in a statement. “But the lyrics are an action against that title. Because if we allow our fatalism or our negativity to really take over, we will crumble. It’s about a city, in my case, Los Angeles, but it could be anywhere where bad stuff is happening.

The title of Garbage’s new single, “There’s No Future in Optimism,” suggests yet another slog through pessimism, and the opening scenes of the music video don’t help any by showing newspaper headlines like “Martial Law Declared” and “Government Passes ‘Creative Compliance Act.'” The clip for the song, which will feature on the band’s upcoming Let All That We Imagine Be the Light album (out May 30), is black-and-white, too, suggesting more bleak music for bleak times. But then Shirley Manson’s voice glimmers through the gray,...

In a statement, Manson said she went into the making of Let All That We Imagine Be the Light “determined to find a more hopeful, uplifting world to immerse myself in” than Garbage’s previous album, 2021’s No Gods No Masters, which the singer said was “born out of frustration and outrage.”

Even when a series lasts for a relatively short period of time, it can produce a lasting legacy that goes on years after its finale. This became the case with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which only ran for two seasons and 31 episodes from 2008-2009. The series was a spin-off of the Terminator films, picking up after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. While never a ratings hit, it did have a loyal fan base that campaigned for the show's Season 3 return before the network ultimately pulled the plug. Now, over 15 years since the series last aired, creator John Friedman is reflecting on the cancelation and whether he was satisfied with its conclusion.
During a chat with Empire, Friedman was asked if he was prepared for the show's cancelation and, even though he knew more stories could be told, the Season 2 finale was written in a way that could...

Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles Creator Josh Friedman On James Cameron, Cancer, And Cancellation
Sarah Connor was dead. Or was she? Well, yes, according to 2003’s Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines – but death can’t compete with TV. It was 2006 when Josh Friedman, who had co-written Steven Spielberg’s War Of The Worlds, was approached by Warner Bros. Television to write what would become The Sarah Connor Chronicles. A series picking up from where James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day left off, it followed Sarah (Lena Headey) and her prodigious son John (Thomas Dekker) as they, along with Cameron (Summer Glau), a protector Terminator, continued to battle Skynet and evade murderous cyborg stalkers. Launching in January 2008, it enjoyed two seasons until it was, in April 2009, abruptly… well, terminated.
Fifteen years on, we speak to Friedman about legacy, cancer, and Shirley Manson disguised as a urinal.
When you were hired to write this show, Terminator 3 had come and gone. Is it fair...

Orlando Bloom is willing his memory of starring in “Troy” to wilt.
Bloom, who portrayed Paris, the Prince of Troy, whose affair with Queen Helen (Diane Kruger) ignited the Trojan War, revealed that he “didn’t want to do the movie” at all, despite the 2004 historical feature being a box office success.
During a career retrospective interview with Variety, Bloom admitted he “blanked out” the film from his own career and mind.

To say the Terminator timeline is pretty confusing at this point would be an understatement. The franchise, created with the release of James Cameron's seminal 1984 effort "The Terminator," has since been softly rebooted, retconned, and generally mishandled by successive generations of studios and filmmakers. So twisted is the saga's internal timeline that watching the "Terminator" movies in any kind of coherent order has become a challenge not unlike trying to destroy the T-800 himself.
Prior to the release of 2019's "Terminator: Dark Fate," things seemed to be looking up. With the help of James Cameron on producing duties, director Tim Miller decided to forget the three lackluster films that followed the modern classic that is 1991's "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" and simply pick up where that stellar entry in the franchise left off. Cat Power and Iggy Pop have teamed up for a new cover of John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero.”
The cover arrives as a single from an upcoming compilation album titled The Faithful: A Tribute to Marianne Faithfull, organized by In The Q Records, Bandbox, and the Women of Rock Oral History Project to help raise funds for Faithfull as she “recovers from Long Covid.” Thus, the version of the song that Cat Power’s Chan Marshall and Pop have delivered pays homage to Faithfull’s 1979 version of the song, with a driving beat and an ambient sense of tension.
Overtop, Marshall’s multi-tracked vocals carry Lennon’s powerful words, while Pop dips in throughout with spoken word lines, sounding almost like a late-career Leonard Cohen, proclaiming a solemn truth with a low, commanding growl. Listen to the single below.
In a statement, Marshall expressed her excitement to be part of the project.

It seems only appropriate that one of the fiercest protesters against the abuses of the Catholic Church in Ireland would make her voice heard from beyond. Only a few months after her death at 56, Sinead O’Connor’s unreleased “The Magdalene Song” premiered on the series finale of the six-part BBC mystery drama The Woman in the Wall.
The series, which aired its finale on Sep 25, starred Ruth Wilson as a woman who suffers from trauma that stretches back to her time spent in Ireland’s controversial Magdalene Laundries, church-run homes...

The late Sinéad O’Connor was “one of the most incredible women of modern times,” Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson says in the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now, praising her as a “monster musician” who was a major influence on her own work — and on the entire Nineties. “Up until that point, aside from Madonna, there were no really outspoken women in music, because you couldn’t afford to be outspoken,” adds Manson. “You would get squashed. And Sinéad kind of heralded in this amazing decade of rebellion.”

Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll Tina Turner died on May 24th at the age of 83. Fellow musicians and fans alike took to social media for an outpouring of tribute posts, mourning the once-in-a-lifetime performer.
“I’m so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner. She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer. She was inspiring, warm, funny and generous. She helped me so much when I was young and I will never forget her,” wrote The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. (Turner opened for The Stones on their 1969 US tour).
Beyoncé, who performed with Turner during the 2008 Grammy Awards, delivered an emotional tribute on Instagram. “My beloved queen. I love you endlessly. Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the Season 9, episode 14 season finale of “The Masked Singer,” which aired May 17 on Fox.
Like a river, Bishop Briggs kept a steady flow throughout Season 9 of Fox’s “The Masked Singer” — and her perseverance was rewarded with the championship. Briggs, as Medusa, won this season’s top prize and was finally unmasked on Wednesday night’s finale, along with runner-up David Archuleta, revealed as the Macaw.
Briggs, who performed the most of any contestant this season, sealed her victory with performances of “Elastic Heart,” by Sia, and “Welcome to the Black Parade,” by My Chemical Romance. Although Briggs said singing under the Medusa costume was a challenge, she pointed out that it was nothing compared to what she did last year.
“When I was on the show, I was six months postpartum,” she said. “My most recent memory was performing at Coachella while pregnant,...

The four panelists on “The Masked Singer” are having a hard time narrowing down the identity of the secret celebrity hiding inside the Medusa costume. The snake-haired villainess performed a pitch-perfect rendition of “Happier Than Ever” during the season premiere and left the judges “speechless.” She returned in Episode 2 with “Dancing Queen” and won the crown yet again. Medusa then performed “New York, New York” in Episode 3, but lost the vote to California Roll, however she was saved by the “Ding Dong Keep It On” Bell and won the comeback competition. She then advanced from the quarter-finals and the semi-finals, which means she will appear in the season finale. Do You know who she is? Read on for the judges’ “The Masked Singer” Medusa guesses.

For the first eight seasons of “The Masked Singer,” if a contestant didn’t receive enough votes to qualify for the next round, they would be forced to unmask and reveal their true identity in front of America. Season 9, however, introduced a new twist known as the “Ding Dong Keep It On” Bell. This allowed the panelists to save an eliminated singer by ringing a bell. During the April 26 episode, saved contestants Medusa, Gargoyle and Mantis competed to make history on “The Masked Singer” and be the first person ever to re-enter the competition, and Medusa prevailed.
Medusa’s triumph wasn’t much of a surprise. After all, the audience went absolutely crazy after she belted out “Mercy” on Wednesday’s show. “I felt very emotional just singing this song, and to have this reaction, I’m gonna replay this in my mind forever,” she stated through tears.

Boiling Point (Philip Barantini)
More often than not, one-take films struggle to justify their gimmick. Whether shot in one go or utilizing an intensive editing process to appear like so, the technique almost always threatens to overshadow whatever story is at the center rather than emphasizing it. Used correctly, it can prove immersive in the exact same way as a theatrical production—breaking down barriers between performer and audience, who can see their work unfold in real-time. Unfortunately, the impracticality of telling a story this way is usually highlighted via several scenes of actors slowly walking between filming locations. – Alistair R. (full review)

Do you remember Alanis Morissette? Not the Buddhism-practicing, essential-oil-mixing, Earth-mother figure we know today. The first Alanis Morissette. The one who threw on Adidas low-tops and an oversized T-shirt and thrashed her hip-length, un-straightened, un-blonde hair around any stage she could find while absolutely destroying a hook about how her whole purpose in life is to never let some guy forget what a prick bastard he is. That Alanis Morissette.

Almost as soon as Garbage’s self-titled debut blew up overnight in 1995, their singer, Shirley Manson, became aware of the patriarchy running the music industry. Even though she was the group’s focal point — belting dusky electro-rock songs about making sense of depression (“Only Happy When It Rains”) and taking pride in nonconformity (“Queer”) — she was still a woman fronting a band of men, one of whom, Butch Vig, had produced Nirvana’s Nevermind. Almost immediately, she felt as though her role in the group was being devalued — not by the guys she worked with,...

A quarter of a century has passed, and Shirley Manson still wants to tear your little world apart — especially if you support the patriarchies and idiocracies destroying the planet. On Garbage’s seventh offering, No Gods No Masters (a slogan for anarchists and labor unions alike), Garbage’s redheaded Molotov cocktail explodes at evangelicals apathetically offering prayers after shootings, “The Men Who Rule the World,” shitty men in general (in case they don’t rule the world), and, as is often the case on a Garbage record, herself.
