Kim Soo-kil (also known by his Japanese name Hideyoshi Kin), had just graduated from the Japan Institute of the Moving Image when he directed “Have You Seen the Barefoot God?” in 1986. The script was written by Nobuyuki Nishimura, and after winning the academy’s screenwriting competition, it was picked up and produced by the Art Theatre Guild. Classified as a seishun eiga (youth film), it is considered one of the most important films when it comes to the Japanese youth cinema.

The film is inspired by the real story of author Ryuho Okawa, guided by spiritual beings who helped him recover after a near-fatal heart condition. While recovering, he writes a book that goes on to inspire many others through faith-based healing. "Based on the true story of a man whose near death experience inspires him to choose life... and change the lives of millions."
