‘Death of a Unicorn’ Review: Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega in an A24 Comedy Torn Between Absurdism and Predictability
Image
There are seven tapestries on permanent view at The Cloisters in New York that depict, in vivid detail, the tale of a unicorn hunted by man and tamed by a virgin. The series has been the subject of much scholarly discourse, with historians debating their meaning for decades. Early theories landed on metaphors for marriage and fertility, while later and more enduring ones thought of them as allegories for Christ. In his directorial debut, Death of a Unicorn, Alex Scharfman (a producer on House of Spoils and Resurrection) considers a universe in which these magical creatures are real and the tapestries serve as a warning.

The upcoming A24 release, which premiered at SXSW, stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega as a father-daughter duo thrust into a peculiar situation. On their way to a crucial business meeting with a pharmaceutical billionaire, Elliot (Rudd), a meek compliance lawyer with aggressive allergies, and...

‘Death of a Unicorn’ Review: Alex Scharfman’s Horror Comedy Sticks It to Big Pharma
Image
Tear up your fuzzy blacklight posters and forget everything Lisa Frank ever taught you, because according to writer-director Alex Scharfman—and 15th-century tapestries, apparently—mythical cornigerous equines aren’t to be fucked with. Big, fanged, and possessing of a wicked vindictive streak, the titular horned beasties of Death of a Unicorn are fearsome, but Scharfman has bigger monsters to slay, including corporate greed and health inequity—hornless brutes that’ll still gore you in the ass without the slightest provocation.

Elliot Kitner (Paul Rudd), a lawyer for a pharmaceutical company, is having trouble relating to his college-age daughter, Ridley (Jenna Ortega), after the recent death of his wife from cancer. After Ridley joins her father on a business trip in an attempt to reconnect, the two hit a horse-like animal with a conspicuously prominent protuberance on its head while driving through the Canadian Rockies. Pressed for time, Elliot puts the...

‘Death Of A Unicorn’ Review: Jenna Ortega Takes On Mythical Creatures & Big Pharma In A24 Comedy Horror — SXSW
Image
Although writer-director Alex Scharfman makes a big swing with his A24 horror comedy debut, Death of a Unicorn struggles to live up to its bold premise.

The movie stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega as Elliot and Ridley Kinter, an estranged father and daughter who put on a united front to get his family-oriented boss to sign a major deal at his isolated Canadian mansion, located on a mysterious nature preserve. But when they hit a unicorn on the drive in, the pair and their wealthy hosts soon become hunted by a pack of mythological beasts.

As the film’s moral compass, Elliot urges the group to leave the creature be, but when the discovery leads to unprecedented miracle cures, the pharma-rich Leopolds instantly see dollar signs.

But for a movie with a nearly two-hour runtime and a bonkers title with the plot to match, the action kicks off awfully late into the movie.

'Friends' Actor Stephen Park Recalls "Toxic Environment" Behind the Scenes
Image
One of the most popular sitcoms of all time may not have had a particularly "friendly" behind the scenes environment, according to one of its stars. Friends, the NBC juggernaut sitcom that ran for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004, starred numerous supporting actors throughout its entire run, and one of them has called out the show for having a "toxic environment" behind the camera.

Stephen Park, the veteran comedian who has appeared in films like A Serious Man, Snowpiercer, and Asteroid City, was featured in two episodes of Friends. In 1996, he played Scott Alexander in "The One with the Chicken Pox," and in 1997, he played Phil in "The One with the Ultimate Fighting Champion." Although it was a brief stint in the cultural phenomenon that is Friends, Park does not have good things to say about his experience on the show. While discussing his role in Bong Joon-ho's sci-fi comedy Mickey 17,...

‘Friends’ Actor Recalls ‘Toxic Environment’ While Working on Hit Sitcom, Citing Racist Name Calling: ‘Nobody Felt the Need to Correct This or Say Anything About It’
Image
While “Friends” remains one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time, actor Stephen Park, who appeared in Season 2 episode “The One With the Chicken Pox” and Season 3’s “The One With the Ultimate Fighting Champion,” doesn’t remember his time on the show fondly.

“It was at the time, I felt it was kind of a toxic environment,” Park said during a recent appearance on the “Pod Meets World” podcast. “James Hong was the actor who was also on the episode with me, and [the assistant director] was calling him to the set and you know, essentially saying, ‘Where the fuck is the Oriental guy? Get the Oriental guy.’”

He continued, “This isn’t the first time that this happened, you know, but this is the environment where this is business as usual in Hollywood in 1997, I guess it was. And nobody felt the need to correct this or say anything about it.

'A Toxic Environment': Friends Guest Star Describes Racist Incident Allegedly Witnessed On Set
Image
Friends is one of the most successful TV shows of all time, but it has not been without its controversy. The latest to be leveled at the series is a new claim of racist behavior that was allegedly witnessed by a guest star on the set.

On the Pod Meets World podcast, Mickey 17 actor Stephen Park appeared for an interview where he discussed his time on Friends. Park appeared on the series twice, once in Season 2's "The One with the Chicken Pox," and again in Season 3's "The One with the Ultimate Fighting Champion." The guest actor noted how beloved acting legend James Hong also appeared in the latter episode. On the set, Park says he heard the crew casually referring to Hong in an offensive way, lamenting how it seemed to have just been normal behavior.

‘Death of a Unicorn’ Trailer – Jenna Ortega Meets a Killer Unicorn in A24 Movie
Image
Poke around and find out. Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd lead the cast of A24’s upcoming dark comedy Death of a Unicorn, and A24 has released the film’s official trailer this morning.

Death of a Unicorn will arrive sometime in Spring 2025.

Watch the official trailer for Death of a Unicorn below, which plays out a bit like Harry and the Hendersons… with a unicorn rather than a bigfoot. Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd’s characters accidentally hit – and seemingly kill – a unicorn-like creature in the film, and that’s only the beginning of their fantastical nightmare when it soon roars to life and starts killing.

This first official trailer focuses heavily on the comedy aspect of the movie, with Will Poulter stealing the show with several fantastic lines, but it also teases the film’s monstrous side. One thing is clear already: this is one pissed off unicorn!

Image
Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Asteroid City, Wes Anderson’s latest film that had its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Anderson penned the script with his frequent collaborator Roman Coppola after the two previously teamed on the Anderson-directed The Darjeeling Limited, Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch and Moonrise Kingdom, the latter of which scored the pair an Original Screenplay Oscar nom in 2023.

The plot is set in 1955 and revolves around the American Southwest desert town of Asteroid City (population: 87), whose famed attraction is a giant meteor crater and observatory. The one-telephone-booth town is playing host to the military and astronomers honoring five Junior Stargazers with awards for their scientific inventions. It’s also the weekend celebrating Asteroid Day, commemorating September 27, 3007 BC, when that Arid Plains meteorite made impact.

It’s also the weekend an alien appears,...

Asteroid City Blasts Off, Leaving Transformers: Rise of the Beast in its Space Dust at the Weekend Box Office
Image
Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City emerges as an oasis in a desert, proving that uniqueness and a devout following can still make waves at the box office. This past weekend, cinephiles witnessed a spectacle as Anderson’s latest creation not only expanded to over 1,600 theaters nationwide but also outshone the colossal franchise, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, by earning $3.8 million on Friday alone.

With an expected haul of around $8.4 million over the weekend, Asteroid City is taking sure-footed steps towards being a domestic darling with its total close to $10 million as per Collider.

What makes this feat even more remarkable is the average earning per theater, a metric often overlooked but very telling. Asteroid City boasted a per-theater average of just under $150,000. To put this in perspective, this is the highest average for a specialty release since La La Land in 2016. The film premiered in a meager six locations the...

Wes Anderson is among the most creative directors out there, a true auteur with a distinctive style. His films, including The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Fantasic Mr Fox, are often quirky, color-drenched, full of cultural references and even whimsical but also deeply human. While not everyone loves their unique style, he has many fans, including this writer. Anderson’s last film, The French Dispatch, was an anthology inspired by the New Yorker magazine, and while Anderson’s newest, Asteroid City, is not an anthology, it’s a story-within-a-story format evokes some of that as does its deadpan off-kilter comedy – but here with an Atomic Age slant, of 1950s candy colors,...

Wes Anderson and his style for directing, telling stories, building sets and characters is one of the most distinguishable in the world of cinema nowadays.
