Do robots dream of electric spoilers? This article discusses major plot details from the latest episode of "Foundation."
Is it possible we've been overestimating the Cleonic Dynasty at the heart of "Foundation" all along? If season 1 of the Apple TV+ series was all about reinforcing their godlike status as genetically perfect specimen, and season 2 showcased what could go awry should they ever stray from their preordained destinies, then season 3 seems to be focusing on the trio most responsible for Empire's death throes. Brother Dawn (Cassian Bilton) has grown so disillusioned with the state of things that he's turned traitor and found himself recruited by Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) to secretly further the Second Foundation's agenda. Lee Pace's "himbofied" Brother Dusk (more affectionately known among fans as "Brother Dude") couldn't possibly be less invested in their impending downfall, preferring the company of his drugs and lovers instead. That leaves old,...

Gaal Dornick and Demerzel are two central characters in Apple TV+’s Foundation. In the final moments of Foundation season 3 episode 5 titled, Where Tyrants Spend Eternity, Gaal and Demerzel finally meet, with the latter saying, “It has been more than 300 years. You are looking well.” While it’s a great scene to leave the episode on, their meeting comes at a time when it’s not a battle between good vs evil anymore. The two characters are now different sides of the same coin.
Watching two characters, one on the side of the Empire and the other on the side of the Foundation, meet is always bound to be electric. Just like it was watching Lee Pace‘s Brother Day and Jared Harris‘s Hari Seldon in the initial episodes of season 1. But back then, the two men were on opposite sides of the spectrum. Spoiler alert! This article has spoilers for season 3, episode 4 of "Foundation." Proceed with caution!
In the fourth episode of season 3 of Foundation, Brother Day (Lee Pace) starts to really rage against the machine — no, I mean literally. He lashes out in childishly petulant anger against Lady Demerzel's (Laura Birn) iron fist — again, literally iron. (The pair of imperial characters have a complicated relationship.) At one point, the disgruntled emperor confronts Demerzel right in her private quarters in the royal palace as she conducts robot maintenance on herself. She is headless when he walks in, and as she reattaches her top piece to her neck, Day complains about the complications of being human — clipping our nails, going to the bathroom — compared to a robot's flawless and clean upkeep.
Clearly, there is an undercurrent of tension in the conversation, and as it plays out, it's easy to miss a short phrase that Cleon uses at one point.

Please respect and enjoy the peace. This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Foundation."
It was hiding in plain sight the whole time. "Foundation" season 3 might be the show's most audacious chapter yet, paying off the long-simmering tease of the villainous Mule (Pilou Asbæk) and rushing headlong into the final few months of the Cleonic Dynasty's reign over the galaxy. Those who don't pay attention to their psychohistory are doomed to fall victim to it, to paraphrase a certain scientist/doomsday prophet named Hari Seldon (Jared Harris), and we're finally witnessing the chickens coming home to roost after centuries of Empire pretending that nothing was wrong. All of these seeds were planted as early as the very first episode of the Apple TV+ series back in 2021 ... as was the individual secretly responsible for setting this grand plan into motion in the first place.
Say it with me, folks: It was Demerzel all along.

Apple TV+’s Foundation season 3 episode 4 accelerates the crumbling of the Empire as Brother Dawn deserts the palace to join the Second Foundation with Gaal, and Brother Day kills Mavon to (hopefully) be with Song in Mycogen. The threat of the Mule also looms larger, and it seems as if the only ones who take him seriously on both sides are Gaal and Brother Dawn. But more than that, the episode reveals that it was Demerzel who bombed the Star Bridge in season 1’s premiere episode.
The show has done it again this week. Based on Isaac Asimov’s sci-fi novels, the Apple TV+ drama has changed the winners of the galactic chess game unfolding across centuries. Directed with emotional depth and precision, this episode is another major turning point in the season as the actions of multiple key figures (and some supporting characters) change the fate of the Empire and the galaxy.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Foundation Season 3 Episode 3, “When a Book Finds You.”] Lee Pace‘s Brother Day can’t seem to catch a break in Foundation Season 3. His Cleonic Dynasty is going to end in months, but he couldn’t really care less about that. No, this “goblin” version of the emperor — Pace’s word — is more devastated by the fact that his courtesan (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing) was just ripped from his life. It’s an intimate, human moment in such a sprawling sci-fi epic. Episode 3’s ending is a turning point for Day. He just set his plan to abandon his empirical duties into motion. He’ll accompany Song (Wong-Loi-Sing) back to her home in the Mycogen sector. Everything’s going right: The Claviger commander (Ibraheem Toure) commits to helping them escape from underneath advisor Demerzel’s (Laura Birn) watchful eye. But when Day lets his lover in on the Empire’s biggest secret — that Demerzel is ...

Apple TV+’s Foundation season 3 continues to be one of the most epic sci-fi adaptations on the small screen. Episode 3, titled When A Book Finds You, is another emotionally charged chapter in this centuries-spanning saga. This episode is a turning point for major characters like Brother Dawn, The Mule, Demerzel, and Gaal Dornick in this galactic chess game.
The biggest punch of this Foundation season 3 episode comes from Demerzel, who was struggling with an existential crisis due to the Prime Radiant’s predictions. In this episode, she lets Song, Brother Day’s consort, live, even though she’s loyal to a forbidden religion. This action raises questions about her faith and autonomy.
Also, the episode’s title refers to a banned manuscript that viewers were introduced to in the first episode of season 1 itself- Kalle’s Ninth Proof of Folding. This book has now triggered a secret alliance between Gaal...

Fans of the legendary Isaac Asimov were skeptical when Apple TV+ launched Foundation in 2021. It was a visual feast on the small screen with its cinematic VFX, lavish sets, and experienced actors portraying the main characters. However, many were also skeptical.
The author’s original books, on which the show is based, spans galaxies and centuries as it engages in cerebral philosophical debates about the collapse of civilization, free will, fate, and more. Translating a nonlinear and jam-packed narrative into serialized, gripping television was always going to be a herculean task.
Asimov understood before his unfortunate death in 1992. He knew that any live-action adaptation of his works would have to depart significantly from the source material. When I, Robot was released in 2004, his daughter, Robyn Asimov, published a quote from her father that stated what he actually thought about the on-screen adaptations of his works.

Apple TV's breakout series Foundation is one of the best space sci-fi shows on television at the moment, and it's only getting better and better with each season. According to star Cassian Bilton, who plays Brother Daen, season 3 culminates in a finale that's "10 out of 10 television." We'll be the judge of that.
Based on the work of seminal sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov, Foundation is just about as ambitious as space opera shows can get. It's a real, in-depth space odyssey. With the show in its third season, the war between Empire and Foundation boils over. While the season 3 finale is still a few weeks away, Bilton is already hyping up some of the immense performances from his co-stars—specifically Terrence Mann (Brother Dusk), Laura Birn (Demerzel), and Lee Pace (Brother Day).
Expect big things from the Foundation season 3 finale Lee Pace in "Foundation" on Apple TV+.

Spoilers for "Foundation" season 3 follow. If you don't want to ruin the surprises to come, abandon ship now.
"Foundation" season 3 is here, and with it, a host of familiar faces. Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) continues to guide the First Foundation on Terminus. Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) is back out of cryogenic sleep and in the thick of the action. Lady Demerzel (Laura Birn) continues to control the Imperial throne, and of course, the three Cleons (Lee Pace) are still doing their thing as figureheads of Empire. This show has managed to maintain remarkable character consistency despite the utter lack thereof in the source material.
And yet, it isn't the familiar faces but an unfamiliar one that is worth noting in the most recent episode. Just three minutes into episode 2, "Shadows in the Math," we get a rapid-fire account of how the Second Foundation evolves over the course of the 151 years...

This article contains heavy spoilers for "Foundation" season 3, episode 2.
Apple TV+'s "Foundation," with its epic, millennia-spanning scope and blockbuster movie visuals, is one of the best sci-fi shows on TV. It's an adaptation that brings an impossibly big book to life, and while there have been many changes made along the way (including a substantial change to Pilou Asbæk's The Mule this season), it's all in service of a show that knows when to prioritize spectacle for general audiences and when to tie back into the source material.
We saw this last part play out in the season 3 premiere, when Demerzel (Laura Birn) explained the history of robots in the "Foundation" universe and how the Robot Wars started. That was a brilliant piece of adaptation that linked to the books while still surprising audiences who've read Isaac Asimov's work.

It’s only been almost a week since Foundation Season 3 premiered on AppleTV+ after a two-year hiatus, and critics have a lot of thoughts, though mostly positive. The new season was released on July 11, 2025, with familiar faces Jared Harris and Lee Pace returning as the leads, as well as fellow main stars Lou Llobell, Laura Birn, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann. Just two days before its arrival, the acclaimed series earned a perfect Rotten Tomatoes critics’ rating, with praise directed at the excellent storyline adaptation; however, that score has now dropped, accompanied by an even lower Popcornmeter rating.

One of the most interesting aspects of Apple TV+’s Foundation series is the Cleonic Dynasty, aided by their robot servant, Demerzel. Played by Laura Birn, Demerzel is the one who had been programmed by Cleon I to ensure the continuation of the Genetic Dynasty. However, her actions have raised an interesting question in Foundation season 3: Is she actually still protecting the Cleons, or is she starting to directly or indirectly chart their downfall?
The concept of Cleon I’s clones decanted into the three stages of life- Brothers Dawn, Day, and Dusk, to rule over their galactic Empire is an idea that’s unique to the show. So, it isn’t present in Isaac Asimov’s books. Demerzel is the last existing robot from Robot Wars, and beginning from season 2, some of her actions have been controversial.
She now has the Prime Radiant. So, she has the power...

The first law of robotics is to watch the season 3 premiere of "Foundation" before reading further. Spoilers ahead.
Much like Denis Villeneuve's "Dune," AppleTV+'s "Foundation" takes a science fiction work that was previously considered unadaptable and adds enough blockbuster size spectacle to balance out the very dense worldbuilding.
And there is a lot of ground to cover in the "Foundation." The story deals with the centuries-long plan from psychohistorian and super-genius Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) to save humanity from a millennia-long dark ages with the establishment of a Foundation that will preserve human knowledge. Each season of the show jumps forward in time over a century, like "For All Mankind" on steroids. We've seen entire planets be destroyed, kingdoms rise and fall, and the slow but steady decay of a galactic empire, while changing the entire cast every season — since they all die, with a couple of notable exceptions.

The first episode of the third season of Foundation, titled “A Song for the End of Everything,” is, predictably, an establishing episode of sorts. That's understandable for a show of this scale and magnitude which also does quite a bit of time traveling. The audience needs to re-learn where everyone is, what their motivations are, and about the general situation going forward. But of course, it’s Foundation we’re talking about—and so even an episode that could otherwise be considered boring ends up being incredibly entertaining. That’s just what good sci-fi is.
Throughout the season 3 premiere, we are led from planet to planet by a voice-over from Gaal Dornick, who explains to us how things are some 150 years into the future after the ending of season 2. We learn that the Foundation has grown exponentially and now controls a good chunk of the outer borders of what used to be Empire,...

In an exclusive interview with The Direct's Russ Milheim, Foundation cast members Lou Llobell (Gaal Dornick), Jared Harris (Hari Seldon), Lee Pace (Brother Day), and Laura Birn (Demerzel) explained just how the threat of the Mule will affect their characters' journeys.

As a certain disgraced boxer once declared, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.” For Jared Harris’ Hari Seldon, who foresaw the demise of a galactic civilisation and set in motion a plan to temper the fallout, that punch comes in the form of the Mule. A maniacal telepath who can bend enemies to his whim with a thought, the Mule crashes into Foundation’s third season as an agent of absolute chaos, single-handedly laying waste to an entire armada in the season’s show-stopping opener.

A century and a half is a mere blink in cosmic time, yet for the universe of Foundation, it has been long enough for an empire to rust. The third season returns to a galaxy remade. The Cleonic Dynasty, once the undisputed ruler of trillions, now governs a declining Imperium, its authority fractured and its future uncertain.
In its place, the upstart Foundation has expanded from a remote outpost into a formidable power. This shifting balance creates a precarious new détente, forcing these ancient adversaries into an uneasy alliance—a galactic-scale reflection of our own era’s anxieties about institutional decay and the realignment of global power.
It is into this fragile political landscape that the series introduces its most disruptive force: a powerful warlord known only as The Mule. He is not another system to be calculated or a rival government to be negotiated with; he is a singular agent of chaos,...

Plot: The Foundation has become increasingly established far beyond its humble beginnings while the Cleonic Dynasty’s Empire has dwindled. As both of these galactic powers forge an uneasy alliance, a threat to the entire galaxy appears in the fearsome form of a warlord known as “The Mule,” whose sights are set on ruling the universe by use of physical and military force as well as mind control. It’s anyone’s guess who will win, who will lose, who will live and who will die as Hari Seldon, Gaal Dornick, the Cleons and Demerzel play a potentially deadly game of intergalactic chess.

Warning! Warning! This article contains Major spoilers for the Foundation story. Power down if you don't want to know what's coming next in Apple's show.
"Foundation" is back! Apple TV+'s smash-hit sci-fi drama survived its inter-season spell, and season 3 is officially upon us — as is the impending Asimovian supervillain, "The Mule." The story is just getting started (showrunner David S. Goyer has an 8-season vision for the mammoth imperial storyline), and things are about to get out of hand in a way even the psychohistorian super-genius Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) couldn't have predicted.
While the drama surrounding Trantor and Terminus heats up, I have to keep reminding myself that this is technically the tail-end of a story that Isaac Asimov added to for half a century. It's the punctuation mark on a fanatical history that stretches back 20,000 years. If you go back far enough, it even includes a Will Smith movie.

When Foundation first came out on Apple TV+ in 2021, it quickly got the attention of sci-fi fans with its fresh premise—a genius named Hari Seldon predicts the fall of a powerful galactic empire and creates a plan to save the future. The story was different from most sci-fi shows because it jumps across different time periods and focuses on both big events and personal struggles.
This mix of complex characters and big ideas helped it stand out. Season 2, which came out in 2023, made the show even more popular. With the story continuing to grow better, it earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, Apple TV+ has released the final trailer for Season 3, as the platform continues to grow its strong collection of sci-fi shows and movies.
