In her second Jeopardy! game, her opponents were Joey Quismorio, a product manager originally from San Antonio, Texas and Jay Borsom, a trivia content creator and DJ from Plainfield, Illinois.

Lily Gladstone & Kali Reis Become First Indigenous Women To Receive Emmy Acting Nominations
Image
The Emmy Award nominations on Wednesday morning made history across various categories including Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series which recognized Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis for their work in Hulu’s Under The Bridge and Max’s True Detective: Night Country, respectively.

The nods—both Gladstone and Reis’ first— make the pair the first Indigenous women to receive Emmy acting nominations.

Until today, August Schellenberg was the only Native American actor to be nominated for an acting Emmy. He was recognized for his portrayal of Sitting Bull in HBO’s Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee in 2007 under the “Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries or Move” category.

Additionally, FX’s Reservation Dogs finally earned some Emmy love for its final season including Best Comedy Series and Lead Actor in a Comedy for D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai.

Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis Make Emmys History as First Indigenous Women Nominated for Acting

Indigenous actresses Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis have made history with their first Primetime Emmy nominations.

On Wednesday, Gladstone and Reis received nominations in the supporting actress in a limited series category for their roles in Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” and HBO/Max’s “True Detective: Night Country.” This major recognition marks the first time Indigenous women have been nominated for acting Emmys, and they are only the second and third Indigenous actors ever to be recognized in the 76-year history of the television awards.

The only other Native American person nominated in any acting category was August Schellenberg, who received an Emmy nomination in 2007 for his performance as Sitting Bull in the HBO television movie “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.”

A24 Movies With Bad Rotten Tomatoes Scores That Are Still Worth Watching
Image
It's hard to believe that A24 is over 10 years old, but the company has quickly become one of the best contemporary distributors. Few distribution companies have developed their own recognizable aesthetic or are able to sell pricey hipster-style merchandise. But A24's curation of independent film has stoked the flames of cinephiles' passion for bold visions and imaginative stories. Their commitment to creating a platform for independent filmmaking feels refreshing in the glut of superhero and IP-driven releases. A24 has launched the careers of some of our most innovative filmmakers, including Greta Gerwig, Barry Jenkins, Alex Garland, Ari Aster, and Robert Eggers while bringing directors such as Harmony Korine and Sean Baker to a wider theatrical audience. But for every "Moonlight" or "Hereditary," there are other A24 films that have not been quite as well-received. Even though they have bad Rotten Tomatoes scores, they are still worth watching for all...

10 Historical Figures Who Deserve Their Own Movie
Image
The release of Oppenheimer in July 2023 has sparked new debates on the upcoming content of film and series. With an IMDb rating of 8.5 and global success, Oppenheimer has received overwhelmingly positive reviews and film producers should consider shifting their focus from pure entertainment to more historically relevant themes for their movies. Director Ridley Scott, for example, will release his long-awaited Napoleon in November 2023, showcasing yet again another majorly important historical figure.

This new emerging trend of depicting culturally relevant personas may have opened new discussions surrounding which historical figures actually deserve their own modern biopic. Of course, some outdated biopics already exist, but with the fast-paced technological and cinematic advancements, film producers could take advantage of redefining former depictions. From Leonardo da Vinci to Queen Victoria, history has a lot of relevant and socially significant figures to offer.

‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Question Answer Ruled Wrong After Ken Jennings’ Acceptance
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the September 18 episode of Jeopardy!] The Second Chance Tournament featuring Season 37 players continued on Jeopardy! with digital journalist Matt Walks, community outreach supervisor Deanna Bolio, and history and Latin teacher Elliott Goodman, and it was early on that one of them got a bit of bad news. Before her interview following the first commercial break, host Ken Jennings informed Deanna, “I’m afraid I have to give you the bad news first. I inadvertently accepted your response of Chief Joseph instead of Crazy Horse in the first round, so we’re going to have to knock that off your score. But it’s early. You’ll be back.” That took her from $2400 (already in third to Matt’s $3200 and Elliott’s $2600) to $400. The clue in question came in the category of American History. The $1000 clue read, “Native American leaders at the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn included Sitting Bull & this Oglala chief, ...

‘Americana’ Review: Sydney Sweeney and Halsey in a Contemporary Western That Cleverly Subverts Expectations
Image
The theft of a valuable Native American artifact triggers a cascading series of violent crimes in Americana, a revisionist Western set in present-day South Dakota. Writer-director Tony Tost brings his years of experience on similarly themed episodic series like Damnation and Longmire to his directing debut, an ensemble feature with multiple overlapping storylines. The plot premise for Americana concerns a Lakota nation “ghost shirt,” a garment fashioned from animal skin that was thought to be instilled with special powers for adherents of the ghost dance, a late 19th century Native American religious movement.

Although stylistically and thematically a Western, the borderline comedic tone of Tost’s script, along with frequent gratuitous violence, rapid-fire dialogue and a non-linear narrative structure, suggest Americana is more of a hybrid crime drama in the Tarantino mold. The film’s appeal for genre enthusiasts should also be enhanced by the appearance of multi-platinum singer-songwriter Halsey in her first dramatic role,...

This year’s SXSW Film & TV Festival opened with the premiere of Swarm, the dark tale of Dre (Dominique Fishback), a stan whose obsession with a Beyoncé-esque pop idol turns deadly. Ghost shirts, which are sacred to certain Indigenous communities, were thought to guard the wearer against bullets through spiritual power. It boasts a big cast of actors including Sydney Sweeney, Halsey, Paul Walter Hauser, Zahn McClarnon, Simon Rex, Eric Dane and Gavin Maddox Bergman.

Sitting Bull
Big Crow - Jennie Kermode - 17581
Sitting Bull
It has become fashionable, in the modern age, to dismiss the notion of heroes, or to consign them to the fantasy realm, stepping away from the great man theory of history to focus on technological developments and broader social movements as instigators for change. The fact remains, however, that in marginalised communities, the impact of individuals who choose to step up and fight for others can be considerable. If SuAnne Big Crow had lived, it seems likely that people all around the world would have known her name. This documentary goes a little way towards correcting matters by looking at what she had achieved by the time she was just 17-years-old.

“We are Crazy Horse’s people,” say the Oglala Lakota people living on Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota today. This is the land where Sitting Bull was born, a land with a proud history, and one which escaped the attention.

Michael Greyeyes on ‘Wild Indian’: ‘I’m Here to Demolish Notions About Who We Are’
Image
Michael Greyeyes pushed his body to the breaking point in order to play Makwa, the haunted man at the center of “Wild Indian.”

The veteran actor shed 35 pounds from his already slender frame, losing the weight largely by fasting. It was hard, Greyeyes admits, but also necessary to portray someone who has a toxic secret that threatens to destroy his carefully manicured existence as a successful executive and family man.

“There were months where basically I was hungry all the time,” Greyeyes told Variety. “That allowed me to have a lived experience. I would walk by coffee shops or bakeries and see all these delicious looking things I couldn’t have. It created a sense of frustration and keen hunger. I felt like a wolf at times when I was playing this role — I was something lurking at the edges of polite society trying to find his prey.”

“Wild Indian,...

Buffalo Bill and the Indians
Image
Do audiences ever ask for a History Lesson? Robert Altman gives them a smart, if diffuse, image of America as a showbiz invention, commercialized and packaged. Paul Newman is the prepackaged white hero surrounded by a jolly circus; Buffalo Bill’s trick seems to be to get his colleagues, the dispossessed minorities and especially the vanquished Native Americans to cooperate with his self-aggrandizing fantasy. One of Altman’s better scattershot ensembles sketches an amusingly hollow Buffalo Bill in Paul Newman, but the director’s style keeps emotional involvement at arm’s length… make that telephoto lens’ length.

L'Argent (1983)
Kirk Douglas Appreciation: Hollywood Star Set His Own Course
L'Argent (1983)
Martin Amis’ 1984 novel “Money,” inspired by his painful experiences as the screenwriter of the disastrous 1980 sci-fi movie “Saturn 3,” includes a character based on “Saturn 3” star Kirk Douglas: “Lorne Guyland,” an aging but still virile screen legend, “had, in his time, on stage or screen, interpreted the roles of Genghis Khan, Al Capone, Marco Polo, Huckleberry Finn, Charlemagne, Paul Revere, Erasmus, Wyatt Earp, Voltaire, Sky Masterson, Einstein, Jack Kennedy, Rembrandt, Babe Ruth, Oliver Cromwell, Amerigo Vespucci, Zorro, Darwin, Sitting Bull, Freud, Napoleon, Spider-Man, Macbeth, Melville, Machiavelli, Michelangelo, Methuselah, Mozart, Merlin, Marx, Mars, Moses and Jesus Christ.”

And while “Money” is not, on the whole, particularly kind to Kirk Douglas, this list does reflect the breadth and scope of a screen career that started in 1946 and culminated in the early 21st century.

On screen, Douglas was the epitome of the square-jawed leading man, whether he was playing a Roman slave,...

'Woman Walks Ahead' Review: Biopic on Feminist Painter Is One Big Falsehood
Widowed New York painter Caroline Weldon (Jessica Chastain) travels to South Dakota in 1889 to do a portrait of Sitting Bull (Canadian actor/dancer Michael Greyeyes). It's the sort true-story premise would be a fascinating starting point for a movie ... if said film had more than a nodding acquaintance with the truth. Hollywood airbrushing quickly infects Woman Walks Ahead from the get-go, whether or not you know that Chastain and Greyeyes are at least 15 years younger and eons more glamorous than the characters they're respectively playing. ‘Woman Walks Ahead’: Jessica Chastain and Susanna White Share 5 Tips For Making a Feminist Western About Native Americans
Robert De Niro, Sam Rockwell, and Susanna White
When filmmaker Susanna White was growing up in gray-skied England, the “Woman Walks Ahead” director was obsessed with Westerns, though she always felt there was something missing. “I’d grown up loving Westerns as a genre, whether that’s John Ford movies, or Sergio Leone movies,” White said in a recent interview with IndieWire. However, “there was a level at which I didn’t connect to them,” she added, “because they were such a man’s world.”

For her latest film, the “Nanny McPhee Returns” director was able to do something she’d always wanted to: retrofit a genre she loved, while also staying true to the time period it portrayed. It certainly helped that her lead actress, Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain, is also a Western-loving cinephile who agreed that the genre could use a feminist touch. “Woman Walks Ahead” addresses that, with Chastain cast as Catherine Weldon, a painter...

Zahn McClarnon and Kateri Walker at an event for Into the West (2005)
Zahn McClarnon (‘Westworld’) could make Emmy history as first Native American actor nominated for a series
Zahn McClarnon and Kateri Walker at an event for Into the West (2005)
Zahn McClarnon suddenly became “Westworld’s” season two Mvp in the span of an hour thanks to his role as Akecheta, leader of Ghost Nation in the eighth episode, “Kiksuya.” A nomination for Best Drama Supporting Actor would be a groundbreaking moment as the television academy has never nominated a Native American actor for a continuing series.

“Westworld” was nominated for Best Drama Supporting Actor last year for Jeffrey Wright, but he got a promotion this year to the lead category, which could open the door for McClarnon to make history: not only would he be the first Native American actor to receive a nomination for a series, he would also be only the second Native American actor ever nominated in any category, after August Schellenberg contended for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor for his performance as Sitting Bull in the HBO telefilm “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” in...
