John Mulaney's new movie role is a full-circle moment (and his biggest yet)
Image
John Mulaney's newest movie role will bring him back to the same material he worked on during one of the lowest points in his career. It's a full-circle moment that likely isn't lost on the former Saturday Night Live writer.

Per Deadline, comedian John Mulaney has joined the cast of the upcoming biopic on John Madden. Directed by David O. Russell, the movie stars Nicolas Cage as the legnedary football coach who later lent his name to the iconic video game franchise.

Mulaney will play Trip Hawkins, founder of EA Sports and a pivotal figure in helping Madden become the video game juggernaut played by millions of gamers around the world. But, it won't be Mulaney's first collaboration with EA Sports.

Roughly a decade ago, Mulaney found himself in a career valley. He'd left Saturday Night Live with hopes of leading his own sitcom. NBC ultimately passed on the pilot Mulaney created,...

A Ray Lewis Pep Talk Inspired John Mulaney to Pitch His Failed Sitcom
Image
John Mulaney seems to be figuring something out on his anti-comedy talk show, Everybody’s Live. While refusing to do traditional bits seems to be one of the Netflix show’s meta jokes, the comedian has found a groove telling hilarious showbiz stories at the top of the show. After last week’s bonkers Bone Thugs-n-Harmony tale, Mulaney followed up with a story about a Hall of Fame linebacker giving him a pep talk about his mess of a sitcom.

It’s not a new story — I saw him do the bit in a club back in 2017 — but it delivered just the same. Mulaney told the crowd that after he left Saturday Night Live, he had a sitcom deal with NBC. The comedian shot a pilot for his new show — and the network passed.

What a bummer! Mulaney says he was “so sad” — 31 years old and out of a job.

Former DWTS contestant Kate Flannery blasts Anna Delvey: ‘We don’t need that vibe’
Kate Flannery
Consider actress Kate Flannery among those who disagree with Anna Delvey’s participation in Dancing with the Stars.

Flannery, best known as Meredith Palmer on The Office, competed in Season 28 of the dance competition show.

She partnered with professional dancer Pasha Pashkov and got eliminated fifth overall.

Contestants from Flannery’s season may have been considered controversial, including former NFL star Ray Lewis, former NBA star Lamar Odom, and former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

However, Delvey’s Season 33 appearance is highly controversial because she was convicted on eight charges after posing as a German heiress in New York to defraud wealthy entities of significant funds.

Everyone from disgruntled fans to The View’s Joy Behar and former DWTS dancer Cheryl Burke has reacted to Delvey’s controversial inclusion in the cast.

Flannery is the latest to offer critical remarks objecting to the fake heiress and criminal participating in the competition.

She also addressed the speculation that she’d had romantic relationships with some of her dance partners.

Burke revealed one of those romances was with Chad Ochocinco Johnson, her Season 10 partner.

Cheryl Burke Slams ‘DWTS’ for Casting Adrian Peterson, Says Show Shouldn’t Air During Strikes
Image
Dancing With the Stars has come under attack for casting controversial NFL star Adrian Peterson, as well as its decision to go ahead amid the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes. Professional dancer Cheryl Burke, who was part of DWTS from Season 2 to Season 31, spoke out about Peterson’s casting, saying that she agreed with fellow pro Sharna Burgess, who previously said she’d have walked out of the show if she’d been paired with the football star. “We’ve had a lot of controversial characters on the show. I think I danced with Ray Lewis — that was a bit controversial. When it comes to abuse, I do agree with Sharna,” Burke told Variety regarding Peterson’s inclusion in the upcoming season. “However, you sign up to be a part of the show. And honestly, as a pro dancer, whoever walks in through that door, you don’t turn around and walk out,...

The contender to watch this weekend: “Spoiler Alert,” Peacock

This sad but uplifting romantic drama comes to streaming after a low-key theatrical run. It’s based on the memoir “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies” by entertainment journalist and TVLine founder Michael Ausiello. (TVLine and Gold Derby are both owned by Penske Media Corporation.

‘Beyond The Edge’ Axed After One Season by CBS
Adrienne Barbeau, Casper Van Dien, Sean Maher, and Eden Riegel in Beyond the Edge (2016)
The celebrity survival series Beyond The Edge has not survived the chopping block, as CBS has canceled the show after one season. Produced by Buster Productions in association with eOne’s Renegade, the series followed nine celebrities living in the dangerous jungles of Panama for two weeks. Unlike Survivor, the show it aired after, Beyond The Edge did not have any eliminations; instead, the show tested whether the celebrities had the inner fortitude, courage, and physical ability to withstand the elements, including torrential downpours, scorching heat, and deadly wildlife. A player could only leave if they rang a bell to signal that they were ready to go home. For each day they lasted and every challenge won, the celebrities raised more money for their charities. After the 14 days, the top two earners battled it out head-to-head in one final adventure. The first season starred country singers Lauren Alaina and Craig Morgan,...

ESPN Films Sets ‘30 For 30’ Docu On 2000 Baltimore Ravens
Image
The Super Bowl-winning 2000 Baltimore Ravens were among the NFL’s greatest defensive teams ever, and now the team is getting 30 for 30 treatment. ESPN Films has kicked off production on a documentary on the squad led by future Hall of Famers Ray Lewis, Rod Woodson and Ed Reed.

The doc centers on one of the most notorious football teams to ever play the game. Few teams in NFL history have boasted, bullied or brandished as much bravado as the 2000 Ravens. The rest of the NFL hated them, but no one could say a thing because few could beat the Ravens on the field. The defense set a league record for fewest points allowed in a 16-game regular season and pitched four shutouts. Luckily for sports fans, their full-throated reign coincided perfectly with the rise of the “reality television” era via ESPN’s Hard Knocks.

That storied defense led the Ravens to...

‘Beyond the Edge’ Producer Explains Why Viewers Like Seeing Celebrities Hack it Out In The Jungle
Image
It’s not I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here — but it sure is close. CBS on Wednesday debuted Beyond the Edge, a new reality show from Renegade (Naked and Afraid) that drops nine celebrities into the jungles of Panama to compete in challenges while earning cash for their charities (and personal pocketbooks).

Even before its debut, CBS executives privately marveled at how the show was “really killing” its participants — a rather sobering nod to the nasty elements faced by former NBC champ Metta World Peace, former NFL linebacker Ray Lewis, American Idol alum Lauren Alaina, actress Jodie Sweetin (Full House), supermodel Paulina Porizkova, former NFL player and coach Mike Singletary, country artist Craig Morgan, former Bachelor Colton Underwood and The Real Housewives of New York City’s Eboni K. Williams.

Here, executive producer David Garfinkle weighs in on Wednesday’s premiere and why viewers love to watch...

CBS’ ‘Beyond the Edge’ Sent Celebrities to the Jungle — And Producers Were Terrified They’d All Quit
Image
CBS and the producers behind the network’s new reality series “Beyond the Edge” were bracing for their celebrity cast to mutiny. They even had contingency plans in place, just in case their stars decided to give up in the face of grueling conditions.

“I remember in the middle of production, saying on multiple occasions, ‘I can’t believe they’re still out there,’” says CBS alternative series senior VP Mitch Graham. “You never know in a new format, what you’re going to get. We had an eight-episode order in place. My biggest concern was whether or not people would stick with it, and whether we could actually complete a series order.”

Created and produced by Renegade, the company behind Discovery’s long-running smash “Naked and Afraid”, “Beyond the Edge” features nine celebs roughing it on an island in Panama, teaming up and competing in challenges to earn money for their designated charities.

‘Beyond the Edge’ Sees Celeb Competitors ‘Pushed to Their Breaking Point’

Williams (The Real Housewives of New York City) — hit Panama for a grueling endurance challenge. It’s all for charity, but that doesn’t mean any part of the experience is easy. “I don’t think you’ve ever seen celebrities in a limelight like this before,” says executive producer Greg Goldman. (Credit: Robert Voets/CBS) The stars got “a very basic beginning of a structure,” he says, that they then had to...

Robert Pattinson Fans Feeling Sorry For Him After Twilight Sequel Announcement
The Twilight Saga fans may have rejoiced at the announcement that Stephenie Meyer is working on a sequel, to be released later this year, but fans of Robert Pattinson don’t think that this will bode well for the actor.

While the Twilight franchise did well both in book sales and box office numbers, it’s no secret that the story tends to invoke a certain amount of rage from people who don’t accept it as literature, or good fiction. And as you’d imagine, whenever a series as popular as this one becomes divisive, some ingeniously decide to take it out on the actors who portrayed the characters found therein. Suffice it to say, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart weren’t exactly overcome with thrill and excitement for their time as the main characters in the story of Twilight, with the former famously voicing his irritation with the series in several interviews.

“Dancing with the Stars” can be hazardous to your health. You wouldn’t necessarily think that this amateur celebrity dance show is a dangerous sport, but there’s no question that it’s an athletic pursuit, and as many athletes know, injuries are bound to happen. Click above to see all the celebs who had to leave the ballroom abruptly because they got hurt or sick, and one who exited the show for personal reasons.

To compete on “DWTS,” celebrities have to train with their pro partners to learn brand new routines every single week. If they last long enough in the competition they eventually have to learn two or three dances per week, including group routines. And if they’re really lucky, they get the opportunity to perform a no-holds-barred freestyle routine that’s usually their most demanding performance of the season. It’s tough enough for amateur dancers...

Bong Joon Ho
Oscar night parties began with viewing soirees at hotspots all over Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, then picked up speed as the show ended with Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” historic win. Once the Dolby Theatre emptied out, Hollywood’s hottest started the bouncing, going from party to party well into the wee hours. Here are a few of the stops the stars hit along the way.

Every winner’s first after-party was the Governor’s Ball, where they had to stand in line at the engraving stand behind Bong Joon Ho, whose golden boys filled up the table. Renée Zellweger (pictured) wasn’t complaining, not were Taika Waititi or Joaquin Phoenix, who had a bonding moment while they waited. Everyone who had been to last year’s ball and remembered Sequoia Productions’ producer Cheryl Cecchetto’s “Filmscapes” theme that presciently featured images from world cinema wondered the same thing:...

Huge congratulations to Kansas ’— uh, we mean, Missouri’s — Kansas City Chiefs! But despite taking home their first Super Bowl trophy in a half century, the real winner was us, the viewers, because we all know that the best thing about the Big Game is always the commercials (and that halftime show).
