9 Best Willa Fitzgerald Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Willa Fitzgerald has been exploding in film and television fan favor in recent years thanks to a buzzy performance in a twisted thriller and the ever-growing popularity of everyone's favorite series about a beefy man taking down baddies. However, some folks inaccurately believe that Fitzgerald is a star on the rise when in reality, she's been consistently working since the late 2000s. She's established herself as a formidable acting presence with a proven track record of versatility, portraying complex characters across a miscellany of genres on screens big and small. Fitzgerald truly shines with her ability to draw audiences in and see the characters as very real people, regardless of the world in which the project is set. Even under the most heightened circumstances, she'll make you root for her as the final girl in a slasher series or strike fear into your heart as a sadistic killer. As she's...

One Of The Most Ambitious Cinematic Experiments Ever Has A Perfect Metacritic Score
Image
In 2025, IP remains king. As the age of the superhero blockbuster appears to wane (unless Marvel truly can fix their ailing cinematic universe before it's too late) studios are turning to other existing properties to sell movie tickets, with video games looking like they could become the next major font of inspiration for Hollywood — although "Borderlands" becoming the biggest bomb of 2024 doesn't bode well. Still, if video games don't work out, you can bet studios will find something you already know and repackage it, even if that something is literally already a movie.

It would be patently silly to write off all projects based on existing IP as being inherently bad. But we are clearly in a golden age of repurposing things that really shouldn't be repurposed. Case in point: the Harry Potter reboot series which seemed like a tipping point for our nostalgia-obsessed monoculture when it was announced in...

10 Best Hollywood Directors Who Never Won an Academy Award, Ranked
Image
The Academy Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars, is one of the most coveted awards to receive in cinema. Many actors, directors, writers, and cinemaphotographers spend their entire careers seeking one of these awards. Last year, Christopher Nolan finally won his first two Oscars. Despite winning hundreds of awards worldwide throughout his career, Nolan lacked any Academy Award wins until Oppenheimer, which earned Nolan the Oscars for Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Achievement in Directing. While Nolan can now call himself an Academy Award winner, many of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers cannot make the same claim.

Throughout American film history, many of Hollywood's all-time great directors have gone their whole careers without winning an Academy Award. Some, like Paul Thomas Anderson and Richard Linklater, have received many Oscar nominations but never claimed victory. Others, like Fritz Lang, shockingly never managed to garner a single Academy Award nomination despite making many iconic movies.

10 Movies That Perfectly Capture A Moment In Time
Image
Movies are constantly made to capture a specific moment in time. Productions that rely heavily on true, human experience have a deep way of resonating with individuals, especially individuals who have gone through such experiences. Visual style, themes, and characters can make certain movies perfect capsules for the time they were made as well as priceless slices of life that can be analyzed to extreme levels.

Some productions stand out as movies that defined their decades but are still timeless classics, weaving stories that have resonated well beyond their original release. The balance between art, historical reflection, and pure humanity proves particular films’ incredible abilities to whisk audiences away to a precise place and time. Films like The Breakfast Club and La La Land will forever encapsulate the moments and situations they present, from a day one would never forget to a relationship that never was.

Ethan Hawke says franchises like Harry Potter and Star Wars leave you disappointed with wish fulfillment, whereas Richard Linklater movies remind audiences what it is to be human
Image
Ethan Hawke is no stranger to taking the air out of some mainstream franchises. Years ago, Hawke would criticize those who praised Logan by putting it in his perspective, “Well, it’s a great superhero movie. It still involves people in tights with metal coming out of their hands. It’s not Bresson. It’s not Bergman. But they talk about it like it is.” In an ironic twist of fate, Hawke would then go on to star with Oscar Issac in the dark superhero series Moon Knight for Marvel Studios, which streamed on Disney+. Since partaking in that project, he’s somewhat walked back on his criticisms about the superhero genre as a whole. However, Hawke continues to present that there is a clear distinction between cinema’s big fantasy films and smaller human stories.

Hawke appeared at the Venice Film Festival in a master class, and it was...

‘Minmini’: Genuinely Moving Film - Halitha Shameem's Direction and Khatija Rahman's Music Shines
Image
Usually when a feature film is being made, everyone involved wants it to be filmed and distributed as fast as possible. Writing and development take time, and it’s normal for a screenwriter to workshop a script over longer periods of time, but once a project is greenlit, schedules are framed in terms of weeks. When production drags on months, even years, it’s often a sign something didn’t go according to plan behind the scenes. Script changes, actors becoming unavailable, cast and crew falling out with each other, entertainment industry strikes, worldwide pandemics, and even natural disasters push production schedules later and later, which then leads to snowballing production costs and logistical problems. All of this to say, it’s pretty unusual for a filmmaker to choose to shoot a movie over the course of eight years. But, director and writer Halitha Shameem had a pretty good reason...

12 Years In The Making: 15 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About Boyhood
Image
Boyhood was shot over 12 years, with only 45 days of filming, showcasing a groundbreaking approach to storytelling. Director Richard Linklater almost gave up on the idea before having a last-minute epiphany that saved Boyhood. The studio gave Linklater the budget little by little across the 12-year shoot, as it was too complex to pay upfront.

The Boyhood movie production is one of the most unique approaches to filmmaking in recent memory. Director Richard Linklater had already made a name for himself with movies like Dazed and Confused and The Before Trilogy when he started production on Boyhood, which would really showcase his love for long-form storytelling. The coming-of-age movie follows a young boy named Mason from the age of six to 18 years old as he grows up.

Starring Ellar Coltrane as Mason, Linklakter's Boyhood tells a very simple story that explores the reality of leaving childhood behind. The audience experiences the...

Richard Linklater Films Ranked, from the ‘Before’ Trilogy and ‘Dazed and Confused’ to ‘School of Rock’ and ‘Hit Man’
Image
There’s maybe no major auteur in cinema as unassuming as Richard Linklater. A Houston, Texas born film nerd who got his start making DIY, low-budget films around Austin, Linklater has maintained the scrappy, laidback vibe of his first feature even as his prestige has risen and his budgets have grown. The average Linklater film unfolds with a careful sense of effortlessness, loosely moving through vignettes with a keen naturalistic flow.

That’s not to say Linklater is an unambitious filmmaker; far from it. This is a man who took a seemingly small one day romance film in “Before Sunrise” and created an ambitious 20-year trilogy out of it, using the love story of Jesse and Céline as a canvas upon which to explore ideas of aging, growth, and the cruel passage of time. With “Boyhood,” he took a completely new approach to the classic coming-of-age narrative by shooting on...

This Ethan Hawke Miniseries Remains an Underrated Western Gem
Image
With the Western genre having made a remarkable comeback on television in recent years, there's a new and much wider selection of shows to choose from. Several of these Western series have also managed to convince numerous renowned A-list film talent to make their way to the small screen. 2020 may have been a hard year for the entertainment industry, but thanks to Showtime, along with four-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke, the seven-episode run of The Good Lord Bird was able to further contribute to the genre's re-emergence. Based on the novel of the same name by James McBride, it isn't just any kind of Western, it's one that's inspired by actual historical events and has something meaningful to say about American history and race.

While the miniseries continues to be mostly overlooked by television audiences, it received high amounts of acclaim, even garnering a Golden Globe and Emmy nomination. It's one of those Westerns that,...

Why Lorelei Linklater Wanted To Quit Boyhood
Image
Lorelei Linklater initially eagerly participated in Boyhood but later became uncomfortable with being documented as she went through awkward teenage years. Lorelei Linklater is critical of Boyhood's gender dynamics, feeling that some female characters lacked depth and personality towards the end. Despite her critiques, Lorelei maintains a sense of honesty with her director dad, expressing her concerns about certain aspects of the film.

Boyhood, directed by Richard Linklater, is a groundbreaking film, renowned for its unique approach to storytelling, but Lorelei Linklater still wanted to quit the movie. Boyhood was filmed over 12 years, from 2002 to 2013, as it offers an unparalleled glimpse into the life of a boy, Mason Evans (Ellar Coltrane), as he transitions from childhood to adulthood. The ambitious project stands as a pioneering work in the industry, not only for its prolonged production period but also for its authentic portrayal of the passage of time and the evolution of its characters.

Frightfest 2023: ‘Weird Kidz’ Review
Image
Features the voices of: Tess Passero, Sydney Wharton, Angela Bettis, Sean Bridgers, Ellar Coltrane | Written and Directed by Zach Passero

If ever there was a movie you could not blame for false advertising, it would be Weird Kidz. Having just finished this feature-length animation about… Well… Christ knows what it is really about but I will persevere and try to break down this South Park-esque hand-drawn slightly horror but mostly Big Mouth-y comedy coming-of-age story.

Before we do get into this though, a quick word on the hand-drawn aspect. I thought this really cool, especially considering it is rare to find an animated film these days that isn’t Disney, Illumination or the like. It’s always nice to see a group of creators willing to look backwards in the art. I mean that with all respect because it put this viewer in mind of the old-school animated flicks...

Insidious Franchise Future After The Red Door Teased By Star: "The 'Boyhood' Of Horror Movies"
Image
Insidious: The Red Door star Patrick Wilson has revealed his vision for the franchise's future after the latest film. Wilson reprises his role as Josh Lambert as he and his son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) are haunted by the Lipstick-Face Demon 10 years after the original Insidious. In addition, Insidious: The Red Door will mark Wilson's directorial debut as he continues the story of the Lambert family after Insidious: Chapter 2.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wilson teased his vision for the franchise's future after the events of Insidious: The Red Door. While he confirms he is done with the franchise, he believes Simpkins, who has played Dalton since the original Insidious, could return. He compared his idea to the 2014 film Boyhood about a boy growing up, which was filmed over 12 years and starred Ellar Coltrane as he aged in real life. Check out what Wilson had to say below:

Well, the quick answer is yes.

Best Movies Coming to AMC+ in July 2023
Image
Ever since its launch three years ago, AMC+ has carved out its own small but niche corner in the streaming world. Beyond just offering content from AMC exclusively, the service now provides a plethora of options, from the popular horror service Shudder to the Brit-friendly Acorn TV and BBC America, to the indie-friendly IFC and Sundance Now, to the anime-based Hidive. Regardless of what genre interests you have, there's a lot to offer for everyone, and it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

With summer in full swing, there are several exciting new additions to the service, with releases coming every Friday. Here are the best movies coming to AMC+ in July 2023, as well as a couple of returning classics you should check out.

Salem Horror Fest 2023 – 7 Movies We Watched at This Year’s Event
Image
While previous incarnations of Salem Horror Fest occured in tourist-heavy October, this year’s sixth installment smoothly shifted to two weekends in April. The official selections include 20 features and 37 shorts, along with repertory programming, celebrity guests, live podcasts, panels, after parties, and more.

Here’s what I saw at this year’s event…

Bury the Bride

After making his feature directorial debut with last year’s horror anthology Allegoria, Powerman 5000 frontman Spider One returns with Bury the Bride, exhibiting considerable growth as a filmmaker in a short span of time. He channels a redneck-fueled grit similar to his elder brother Rob Zombie’s ourve, particularly The Devil’s Rejects, coupled with Quentin Tarantino-esque idiosyncrasies.

The film follows bride-to-be June along with her older sister (co-writer Krsy Fox) and three of her closest friends into the California desert for a bachelorette party at a rural house owned by her mysterious fiance,...

Richard Linklater may make ‘Boyhood’ sequel starting when Mason Jr is 30
Richard Linklater has thought about making a ‘Boyhood’ sequel that starts when its lead character is 30.The ‘Before Sunrise’ director, 62, famously filmed the epic coming-of-age tale featuring Ellar Coltrane as Mason Evans Jr over the course of 12 years from 2002 to 2013, and said the six-time Oscar winning project still “breathes” for him.He told Empire magazine in an interview to mark the Arrow Video release of the film when asked if there could be a follow-up: “There were things we could have done – it just hasn’t really grabbed.“For all we know, we could just jump in at age 30 or something. Who the hell knows?”But Linklater, also famed for his indie film ‘Slacker’ and ‘Dazed and Confused’, said he already knows what happens to Ethan’s character next as it’s been charted in his series of films about college and his ‘Before’ trilogy about the youthful hunt for love,...

Richard Linklater's Daughter Wanted Her Character Killed Off In Boyhood
Image
There's ambition and then there's Richard Linklater shooting "Boyhood" with the same core cast from 2002 to 2013.

The "Before" trilogy director's Oscar-winning 2014 drama follows Texan boy Mason Evans Jr. (Ellar Coltrane) as he goes from age six to 18. It's a journey that takes Mason and his family from the highs of camping trips and the midnight release of a new "Harry Potter" book to the lows of having an abusive, alcoholic stepfather and experiencing romantic heartbreak for the first time. Call it "boring" all you want, but Linklater's film makes for a fascinating cinematic time capsule of life in the 2000s. One could even argue it embodies what the legendary film theorist André Bazin was talking about when he asserted that photography "embalms time, rescuing it simply from its proper corruption."

Linklater, in comparison, was perfectly humble when discussing his intentions for the movie during an interview with The Guardian to...

Angela Bettis Previews Animated Horror Movie ‘The Weird Kidz’ [Interview]
Image
For the past few years, editor, director, and animator Zach Passero has been working on a hand-drawn, animated horror film called The Weird Kidz and it’s finally making the rounds at film festivals. Passero, who has frequently worked with Lucky McKee on films like May (2002) and Tales of Halloween (2015), created The Weird Kidz from the fond memories of his childhood, and McKee serves as a producer on the film. Featuring cassette tapes and mullets and perfectly capturing the vibe of the eighties, The Weird Kidz follows three friends, 12-year-old boys Dug (Tess Passero), Mel (Glenn Bolton), and Fatt (Brian Ceely), as they go camping in the desert with Dug’s older brother Wyatt (Ellar Coltrane) and his girlfriend Mary (Sydney Wharton).

When the group stops at a gas station, the owner Duana tells them about The Night Child, a creature she claims lives in the desert and took her younger brother twenty-five years ago.

Richard Linklater loves to film a movie in real-time. He did it with his film Boyhood, filmed over the span of 12 years to keep star Ellar Coltrane as the main character throughout the movie. Originally, Blake Jenner was cast in the lead role of Franklin Shepard, but rumors circulated that Jenner left the film after domestic violence allegations circulated from his ex-wife and Supergirl star Melissa Benoit.

Oscars spotlight: Gabriel Labelle (‘The Fabelmans’) deserves to be in the Best Actor race
Image
According to our combined predictions as of this writing, the five men who are expected to receive Best Actor nominations at this year’s Oscars are Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”), Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Bill Nighy (“Living”), and Hugh Jackman (“The Son”). However, there is a contender with 100/1 odds that I think deserves to be in the conversation much more, and that would be Gabriel Labelle (“The Fabelmans”).

Ethan Hawke Thought Robin Williams Hated Him on ‘Dead Poets Society’ Set
Image
This weekend, Ethan Hawke accepted the President’s Award for career achievement at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in Czech Republic. As the award is intended to honor Hawke’s entire, Oscar-nominated body of work, it was only natural that questions about his breakout role in the 1989 prep school drama “Dead Poets Society” would come up.

As reported by Variety, Hawke took the opportunity to talk about his experience working with co-star Robin Williams.

“I thought Robin hated me,” Hawke admitted. “He had a habit of making a ton of jokes on set. At 18, I found that incredibly irritating. He wouldn’t stop and I wouldn’t laugh at anything he did.”

But Hawke also added that it was Williams who helped him get his first agent.

“He called, saying, ‘Robin Williams says you are going to do really well.’ There was this scene in the film when he makes...

Ethan Hawke on Richard Linklater Transcendentalism Project, Politicization of Pandemic in U.S.
Image
Chosen as this year’s recipient of the President’s Award at Karlovy Vary Film Festival, Ethan Hawke discussed his career, projects – including a potential new film with his long-time collaborator Richard Linklater – and the ongoing pandemic at the Czech event.

At a roundtable discussion with journalists, Hawke opened up about his next possible movie project with Linklater. The film is about transcendentalism, the 19th-century movement of writers and philosophers in New England, which attracted the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and “Little Women” scribe Louisa May Alcott.

“They were the first leaders of the abolition movement; they were vegetarians; they fought for women’s rights. Rick is obsessed with how their ideas are still very radical. This could be a super cool movie and Rick is writing it right now. He is mad at me [for coming to Karlovy Vary], he thinks I should be at his house,” he said.

Ethan Hawke to Be Feted at Karlovy Vary Film Festival
Image
Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, the leading cinema event in Central and Eastern Europe, will honor American actor, director, and writer Ethan Hawke, who will receive the Festival President’s Award at its 55th edition, taking place Aug. 20-28. The award is given to actors, directors, and producers who have “contributed in a fundamental way to the development of contemporary world cinema.”

“We are thrilled to welcome to Karlovy Vary an artist we’ve been admiring for a long time. In 2018, Kviff paid tribute to the Austin Film Society and it is exciting to extend our appreciation of this renowned organization’s work by honoring an actor and director who is so closely connected to the Texas independent film scene,” said artistic director Karel Och and executive director Krystof Mucha.

Hawke will personally introduce Paul Schrader’s thriller “First Reformed,” in which he portrays a parish pastor experiencing a crisis of faith.

The miniseries, which debuted in October 2020 on the premium cabler, mixed fiction, history and satire to tell the story of the famed failed Harper’s Ferry raid leader Brown (played by Hawke) from the perspective of a 14-year-old freed slave (Joshua Caleb Johnson), who is mistaken for a girl and taken in as aide-de-camp to Brown and his militia. ‘Shoplifters of the World’ Review: A Sweet but Inauthentic Comedy About the Day the Music Died
Image
The story goes that a young Smiths fan was so devastated by news of the band’s 1987 breakup that he drove to a Denver radio station with a loaded pistol and a harebrained plan to make the DJ broadcast literary mope-rock all night long. It’s a lot easier to say “please, please, please let me get what I want” with a gun in your hand. Being a Smiths fan, however, our heartbroken hero was too sensitive to point a gun at someone; if meat is murder, then murder would really be murder. So he sat in his car, sang “I Know it’s Over,” and turned himself in to the local police station where he could wallow in a cell worthy of his mood.

Bad Trip (Kitao Sakurai)

The Eric Andre persona is best understood by his popular late-night Adult Swim series, succinctly titled The Eric Andre Show. In every episode Andre’s irreverent and self-destructive behavior leads him to trash his set, causing bodily harm, and torturing a slew of celebrities that range from Jimmy Kimmel to the Real Housewives of Atlanta. Andre is the equivalent of a magic mushrooms trip: wildly confusing, incoherent, sometimes causing one to burst at the seams with ecstatic comedic moments. Andre’s energy finds the perfect vessel in Bad Trip, his first starring role with a script he wrote with frequent collaborator and director Kitao Sakurai.

‘Shoplifters of the World’ Film Review: Teen Angst Gets a Soundtrack by the Smiths
Director Stephen Kijak on the set of Shoplifters of the World
Director Stephen Kijak has made a string of documentaries that are focused on music, among them “We Are X,” “Jaco,” “Stones in Exile,” “Scott Walker: 30 Century Man” and “Sid & Judy.” That ought to mean that he’s got an understanding of the musical life – but more to the point for his new narrative film, “Shoplifters of the World,” it should mean that he has an understanding of fandom, too.

“Shoplifters of the World” may be titled after a song from the ’80s British band the Smiths, and it may play to a nonstop soundtrack of that and almost two dozen more songs from the Manchester-based maestros of morose, but it’s not a movie about the Smiths. It’s a movie about the fans, about what music can mean in the life of people who love it – as Fairuza Balk’s character, Sapphire, says in Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous,...

Shoplifters of the World Review: Helena Howard and Ellar Coltrane Embark on a Music-Filled Journey of Self-Discovery
The Smiths are dead. That’s the news Cleo (Helena Howard) punctuates with a scream loud enough to wake everyone in Denver, Colorado but her own passed out drunk mother on the couch. So she drives to the one place she knows she’ll find a kindred spirit: the record store. Dean (Ellar Coltrane) is reading the news behind the counter as she walks in, the obvious air of depression looming above him before his boss (Thomas Lennon) stomps in to say that he needs to stop playing Morrissey and Marr’s music in memorialization since it’s always been too much of a downer. What he doesn’t realize that Cleo and Dean do, however, is that not everyone wants escapism from their art. Some seek an understanding that they aren’t alone.

That’s what this music gave a generation as its melodies became their home and saved...

Joe Manganiello, Nick Krause, Elena Kampouris, James Bloor, and Helena Howard in Shoplifters of the World (2021)
"This night... will open our eyes." Rlje Films has released an official trailer for an indie titled Shoplifters of the World, from a British director of music docs named Stephen Kijak. Set in the summer of 1987 in Denver, Colorado, the film follows four friends. One crazy night in the life of four friends reeling from the sudden demise of iconic British band The Smiths, while the local airwaves are hijacked at gunpoint by an impassioned Smiths fan. Starring Helena Howard, Ellar Coltrane, Elena Kampouris, Nick Krause, James Bloor, Thomas Lennon, and Joe Manganiello. This isn't the only Smiths tribute film (also: The More You Ignore Me) but it does look like this'll be good. "Featuring an incredible soundtrack – including 20 songs from The Smiths – Shoplifters of the World is a glorious ode to the craziness of the '80s and the power of music ...

Ethan Hawke at an event for One Last Thing... (2005)
Series Review | The Good Lord Bird: American history as a Western thriller
Ethan Hawke at an event for One Last Thing... (2005)
Ethan Hawke goes all guns blazing as hero and co-creator, in 'The Good Lord Bird' drama series based on the true story of an abolitionist who set out to liberate 19th century America from slavery, in the process triggering off Civil War in that country.

Based on James McBride's 2013 novel of the same name, The Good Lord Bird takes a grim, violent slice of history, retains the gory edge but underplays the dark vibes to turn an early anti-slavery campaign of the US into a rollicking Western thriller.

Blaxploitation imagined as irreverent Western drama is not new, Quentin Tarantino did it fabulously in his 2012 ode to violence Django Unchained. Hawke and company spread out a similar tongue-in-cheek style of narration over seven episodes, deftly weaving fiction with facts. Only, it is more political in its context.

‘The Good Lord Bird’: Ethan Hawke Is Antislavery’s Crazed Crusader
Image
“It’s alright to stretch the word of the Lord sometimes,” admits God-fearing, fire-breathing abolitionist John Brown (Ethan Hawke) in The Good Lord Bird. It’s an approach the darkly comic miniseries takes towards matters historical as well as religious, as each episode opens with the disclaimer: “All of this is true. Most of it happened.”

Brown did, in fact, lead a series of violent raids across “Bleeding Kansas” in the 1850s, and later orchestrated a doomed raid on the federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia, with which he hoped...

The Gospel According to Ethan Hawke
Image
It’s debatable whether Ethan Hawke has ever given a better performance in his long and impressive career than his turn as abolitionist John Brown in the Showtime miniseries The Good Lord Bird. He’s certainly not given a bigger one.

Brown was a passionate, bordering-on-unhinged opponent of slavery who led the battle through both “bleeding Kansas” and an attempt to rob a federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Hawke embodies him underneath a wild, scraggly beard and an even wilder expression in his eyes. This version of Brown — a supporting character in the wild,...

Ethan Hawke stars in trailer for limited series ‘The Good Lord Bird’
Ethan Hawke and Hubert Point-Du Jour in The Good Lord Bird (2020)
Showtime has launched a new trailer for the limited series ‘The Good Lord Bird’ which stars Ethan Hawke.

Based on the National Book Award-winning novel ‘The Good Lord Bird’ by bestselling author James McBride, the story follows Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a fictional enslaved boy who becomes a member of the motley family of controversial abolitionist John Brown (Hawke) during the period dubbed ‘Bleeding Kansas’.

At the time the state was a battleground between pro- and anti-slavery forces – and eventually Brown finds himself participating in the famous 1859 raid on the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry. The raid failed to initiate the slave revolt he intended but is considered the event that officially kicked off the U.S. Civil War.

The series stars Ellar Coltrane, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Beau Knapp, Nick Eversman, Jack Alcott and Mo Brings Plenty with guest appearances from Daveed Diggs, David Morse, Steve Zahn, Maya Hawke,...

Ethan Hawke Is ‘Nuttier Than a Squirrel Turd’ in Showtime’s ‘The Good Lord Bird’ Trailer (Video)
Ethan Hawke at an event for One Last Thing... (2005)
Showtime dropped the trailer for its limited series adaptation of James McBride’s “The Good Lord Bird” Tuesday, offering up a first look at Ethan Hawke playing “controversial abolitionist” John Brown. And let’s just say Hawke’s portrayal of the historical figure is, uh, eccentric.

Based on McBride’s National Book Award-winning novel of the same name, “The Good Lord Bird” is told from the point of view of Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson), “a fictional enslaved boy who becomes a member of Brown’s motley family of abolitionist soldiers during Bleeding Kansas – a time when the state was a battleground between pro- and anti-slavery forces – and eventually finds himself participating in the famous 1859 raid on the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry. ‘The Good Lord Bird’ Trailer: Ethan Hawke Is John Brown in Spirited Historical Limited Series
Image
Ethan Hawke may be one of the most versatile actors of his generation, but recently he’s found a real sweet spot playing zealots of all stripes. While his raving fanatic take on controversial abolitionist John Brown looks a bit higher energy than the understated suffering of his “First Reformed” minister, there are subtle similarities between the two wayward shepherds. Hawke executive produced his next project, “The Good Lord Bird,” a seven-episode limited series coming to Showtime this August. The premium channel just released an enticing first trailer for the drama, which is produced by Blumhouse Television and based on the eponymous novel by James McBride.

Here’s the official synopsis: “The Good Lord Bird’ is told from the point of view of Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a fictional enslaved boy who becomes a member of Brown’s motley family of abolitionist soldiers during Bleeding Kansas — a time when the...

Ethan Hawke Is Abolitionist John Brown in ‘The Good Lord Bird’ Series
Image
Ethan Hawke stars as bearded abolitionist John Brown in the seven-episode series The Good Lord Bird, premiering on Showtime on August 9th.

“Everybody got God on their side in the war,” Joshua Caleb Johnson, who portrays the enslaved boy Onion, says in the trailer. “Trouble is, God ain’t telling nobody who he’s for.” The series is from the perspective of Onion, as he teams up with Brown for the Bleeding Kansas confrontation in 1856. He eventually helps fight the raid on the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry three years later,...

How Scrappy Indie Distributor IFC Films Has Prospered for 20 Years by Reinventing Itself
Ethan Hawke at an event for One Last Thing... (2005)
When Ethan Hawke was promoting “Blaze,” his biopic about troubled singer-songwriter Blaze Foley, he went around Texas talking up the low-budget indie to country music fans. It was a grassroots effort, one that saw staffers at IFC, the studio behind the 2018 film, crisscross the state while ferrying the cast and crew in rental cars from one theater to another.

“Of course, it would have been easier if we’d had $20 million to promote the film,” says Hawke. “But this somehow matched the spirit of ‘Blaze.’ IFC is hungry and scrappy, and they’re not pretentious. Those are the qualities you look for in a good indie film.”

Hawke acknowledges that when he signs up for an IFC release, he’s abandoning the creature comforts that come with a big studio movie. The private plane trips and ritzy hotel suites may be lacking, but IFC’s commitment to fostering challenging and...

Richard Linklater Is Reportedly Making a 20-Year Film With Beanie Feldstein and Ben Platt
Boyhood director Richard Linklater is reportedly embarking on another ambitious project: a movie spanning 20 years starring Beanie Feldstein and Ben Platt. According to Collider, it will be a remake of Stephen Sondheim's 1981 musical Merrily We Roll Along, which is based on a 1934 play of the same name. The musical is a dark comedy that follows the successful career of Franklin Shepard, a Broadway composer who becomes a Hollywood producer, but instead of being in chronological order, it follows the story backward from 1976 to 1957. During those years, the audience sees how Shepard grapples with his rise to fame and fortune and how he alienated meaningful relationships with friends and family.

Platt will reportedly play the main character, and Feldstein will play his best friend, a theater critic named Mary Flynn. While neither actor has commented on the new movie yet, 26-year-old Feldstein most recently starred in Olivia Wilde's hilarious...
