Besides shouting each other’s names, the young leads in director Rako Prijanto’s film Monster barely speak a word. It’s up to the audience to interpret what they’re going through — being abducted and taken to a desolate house, where they must fend off their depraved captor and escape by any means necessary. The Indonesian film, a reimagining of the 2020 American horror movie The Boy Behind the Door, stars Anantya Kirana, Sultan Hamonangan, and Alex Abbad.

The 2024 Indonesian movie on Netflix called Monster revolves around two schoolchildren named Alana and Rabin who get abducted by a man named Jack. Jack feels like the real monster in the story, as it becomes clear he has done this before. But he is not alone; his wife, Murni, is also involved in these abductions. The film has no dialogue as such. And honestly, there is no need, as the atmosphere of terror with panting and screaming is enough to fill the void. Despite the horrifying situation, Alana and Rabin show incredible courage to escape. Their struggle to survive from the monsters becomes more intense and involves killing to survive. The movie does not have many characters, only four main ones: Alana, Rabin, Jack, and Murni. So let’s look at the cast and characters of Monster, directed by Rako Prijanto.

Global streaming giant Netflix has made a significant ongoing commitment to production of original content from Southeast Asia and in the Chinese language.
For 2024, Netflix has unveiled a slate of four Chinese-language series, all hailing from Taiwan. From Thailand, it detailed seven series and one film. From Indonesia, it has committed to five films and a series co-written and directed by the consistently successful Joko Anwar, marking his first partnership with the streamer.
Additionally, Netflix has confirmed the appointment of Maya Huang as its head of Chinese-language content.
The moves stand in sharp contrast to the mid-January happenings at rival global streamer Prime Video, which is cutting staff in the region and ending its brief experiment with Southeast Asian originals.
In Indonesia, Netflix says it is broadening its storytelling with a range of genres including comedy, action, fantasy, and sci-fi thrillers.

Joko Anwar, despite having only a handful of films to his credit, has already become a prominent name among international cinema fans, with a filmography that includes entries in horror, thrillers, comedies, and dramatic romances. With his latest feature A Copy of my Mind making its North American debut at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, Anwar is already onto his next project.
His next project significantly differs, however, in that it’ll see Anwar follow many of his Hollywood contemporaries and make the jump from film to television. The series, titled Halfworlds, will be an HBO Asia original project, with Anwar taking on directing duties, as well as co-writing it with Collin Chang. The synopsis of the series is as follows.
In the bustling streets and back alleys of Jakarta, a parallel world of bloodthirsty creatures from Indonesian mythology has lived alongside humans for generations. Taking on the appearance of humans themselves,...

In 2012 Gareth Evans burst onto the scene with The Raid: Redemption. He took a simple concept and filled it with some of the most engaging and inventive action seen in years. Now two years later he is back at again to prove it was not a fluke. The Raid 2 shows Evans has a knack for pushing the boundaries of cinematic action. With a larger budget behind him, he ups the scale of each set-piece without hindering his cleverness. Breaking away from the simple concept of the original does lead to an overly plotting story that gets lost in its own elaborate setup. Still, any fan of the original or any fan of action would be doing themselves a huge disservice if they do not experience what...

Chicago – Two years ago, the Indonesian film, “The Raid: Redemption”, smacked action movie fans upside the head. To briefly sum it up, it was nuts. The straight-forward plot took a backseat to some amazing stunt work, an insane amount of creative choreography and in-your-face violence. There’s no need to worry about the sequel, “The Raid 2,” not living up to the original.
..since the highly-anticipated follow up is bigger and faster and even offers an in depth story to wrap your brain around – while getting hit upside the head once again.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Taking place a mere two hours after the previous film, we catch up with battered rookie Swat member, Rama (Iko Uwais), who’s brought in corrupt cop, Wahyu (Pierre Gruno), and is now being taken in by a mysterious group within the police force that has a specific focus. While they commend Rama for a job well done,...

Chicago – In 2011, a new kind of martial arts film hit the screens, and wowed audiences with outrageous fight scenes, stunts and violence. “The Raid: Redemption” put Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans – working from Indonesia – on the map, and he is back with fight choreographer and lead actor Iko Uwais in “The Raid 2.”
Expanding on the concept of the heroic Indonesian cop from the first Raid film, “The Raid 2” places him undercover in the seamy world of organized crime syndicates. Without confining itself to one location, as the first Raid did, “The Raid 2” is even more viscerally exciting and audacious, with bigger and better fights, action sequences and weird characters.
The story of Welsh Englishman Gareth Evans reinventing the Martial Arts genre was mostly by an accident of timing and place. He was hired to make a documentary in the country of Indonesia about their style of martial arts fighting,...

Editor’s note: Our review of The Raid 2 originally ran during this year’s Sundance film festival, but we’re re-posting it now as the film opens in limited theatrical release. Let’s just dispense with the hyperbole right now. Yes, The Raid 2 will in fact cure any and all ailments, make you irresistible to the opposite sex, give you the winning lottery numbers, do your math homework for you, wash the dishes, and happily go down on you without expecting the same in return. Or not. But even without all of that it should be more than enough that Gareth Evans‘ follow up to his 2011 action hit is without a doubt one of the most brilliantly executed, excitingly choreographed, bone-crunchingly fantastic action films your eyes have ever had the distinct pleasure of seeing and hearing. The action picks up almost immediately after the conclusion of part one as Rama (Iko Uwais) brings the dirty...

Deleted scenes are usually deleted for a reason, and that reason is that they're typically comprised of footage that's really not worth watching. But let's go ahead and toss that broad generalization out the window because as you're about to see, there are exceptions to the rule.

A grave has been freshly dug in the opening shot of director Gareth Evans's ultra-violent Indonesian flick The Raid 2. It's a start, but Evans is going to need 400 more.
In the first few minutes, Evans dispenses with three-quarters of the survivors of 2012's The Raid: Redemption, the writer-director's brutal mini-epic about a police mission gone wrong, leaving only good-hearted, fleet-fisted husband and father Rama (Iko Uwais) to solve corruption in Jakarta (population 9.6 million, about half of whom the Raid movies estimate are evil). The city is ruled by two family heads: Bangun (Tio Pakusadewo) and Goto (Ken'ichi Endo), gentleman gangsters who have maintained a decade-long truce. Posters, stills, featurettes and trailers have already heralded the imminent arrival of The Raid 2 (not subtitled 'Berandal' in this country, just as we didn't call the last one Redemption). And now here's yet another of the latter: a new 90-second teaser of glorious face-smashery and jailhouse rocking. In mud. This clip is officially dubbed The Internet Trailer, reflecting the fact that the web's numerous high profile interbloggers have already uniformly gone ice cold thick banana whips over Gareth Evans' punishing sequel. Basking in the minute-and-a-half above, it's hard not to share their enthusiasm. The Raid 2 – described by more than one hack of Empire's acquaintance as Once Upon A Time In Jakarta - picks up the story two hours after The Raid, and sweeps Rama (Iko Uwais) into a much broader world of corruption and violence as he infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless crime syndicate.Yayan Ruhian (playing a...

A new featurette, fresh in via Youtube, for Gareth Evans’ long anticipated sequel to the widely popular first installment of The Raid franchise, has just been relased.
The Raid 2: Berandal (meaning hooligan), as a title, suggests brawny, functional violence yet as evidenced in this ten minute featurette, the film is far more nuanced and sophisticated. The featurette contains a sizeable chunk of footage, giving the viewer an insight into the mechanics of the film’s action and plot.
Following an animated preamble that features the film’s main cast members, we hear from Evans as he describes the latest exploits of Jakarta cop, Rama (Iko Uwais). Immediately following the events of the original, The Raid 2 tracks Rama as he is forced to join an anticorruption task force to ensure the protection of his wife and child. If you’re already burning with anticipation for the martial arts and other violent madness offered by director Gareth Evans and The Raid 2: Berandal, here’s something to keep those fires stoked. Evans has hit Twitter to debut a new poster for the film. Designed by Omar Hauksson, the image of star Iko Uwais is built using a mosaic of images from the movie itself, most of them showing people hitting other people. It’s a technique that has been used in movie imagery in particular for a while now, but it certainly beats a basic floating head job. This sequel picks up the story two hours after The Raid and sweeps Rama (Uwais) into a much broader world of corruption and violence as he goes undercover in prison and infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate. And yes, it looks even more gloriously violent than its predecessor,...

In the Raid 2: Berandal, writer-director Gareth Evans sets a new bar for action movies by taking the groundbreaking fight choreography of the first movie to greater heights with bigger set pieces, badder villains, and bolder, more inventive action sequences that will leave you reeling.
Fans of the self-contained first movie — about a S.W.A.T. team who must fight their way through a drug-lord’s safe house — have much more to sink their teeth into – action and story wise – in the sequel. Picking up moments after the events of The Raid, The Raid 2 finds rookie Officer Rama forced to go undercover to infiltrate an organized crime syndicate.

Every year, religiously, somebody passes out at Sundance because of a visceral reaction they had to one of the movies screened there. The latest to earn that dubious honor? Gareth Evans' sequel to The Raid: Redemption, entitled The Raid 2: Berandal.
According to The Wrap, a man who appeared to be in his early 30s fell ill during the Tuesday night premiere of The Raid 2: Berandal at the cavernous Eccles Theater in Park City, halting the screening midway through.
The man appeared to recover from whatever caused him to faint and after a while was able to walk out on his own power with the help of theater staff. Paramedics were apparently on their way to check him out all the same.

The Raid 2 is a film fans have been clamoring for since the original in 2011 and it’s easy to see that this film will satisfy those ardent supporters. While the film does contain many exciting elements and some of the most daring fights you’ll ever seen, the film left me pretty detached by the nature of its thin and ever shifting plot.
The movie picks up where the last one left off with Officer Rama meeting with the anti-corruption task force. He is pressured into joining because he is worried for the safety of his wife and son. It’s his safety that he should be really concerned about as he is sent to prison to befriend a mob boss’ son named Uco and has to quite literally fight for his life while in the slammer.
