In a tale that veers between mawkishness and levity, a woman diagnosed with cancer heads back to her home state where euthanasia is legal

”Here’s to life and all its messy complications!” Cancer is a bitch, life is a journey and other horribly pat sentiments are all given free airing in this well-meaning drama about a subject that merits a far more nuanced treatment: assisted dying. Anna (Pitch Perfect’s Anna Camp) is the prodigal daughter rejected by her father when she came out as gay, who returns to Oregon to find him dead and her brother Michael (Steven Strait) cheesed off at her long absence. But she has come back for a reason: to end her life (euthanasia is legal in the state) because she has inoperable cancer.

If the scene at the dining room table doesn’t break you… Nothing will! I sit here a broken man. I mean this is not a new thing for me, I am a total wet blanket and often I’m left emotionally drained at an awful lot more movies than I care to admit to. Once I even squirted tears over an episode of Nickelodeon’s Hey Arnold but that’s not important right now.

Brett Ewins has been released from prison on bail. The 2000 Ad artist and Deadline co-founder was found guilty of assault after allegedly stabbing a policeman during a psychotic episode.
