Halloween Tales, also known under its original title Historias de Halloween, is a horror anthology from Spain that is obviously influenced by the likes of US productions like Creephow (the film uses comics as a framing device like that King-inspired anthology) and, obviously, The Twilight Zone, but – like many Spanish genre fare, also the work of Chicho Ibáñez Serrador.

Spanish auteur Eduardo Casanova takes disturbing and obscene to shocking heights in La Pietà, a twisted tale of mother and son co-dependency that will burn your ears and eyeballs with its graphic delivery. Boundaries are pushed off a cliff as a cancerous relationship, a term used both literally and figuratively, grows like a tumor to a blech conclusion. The primary narrative is supported by a North Korean subplot, yup - you read that right, that's equally bewildering and bonkers. Strap in for a wild ride that's certainly not for mass consumption.

In 2011 Spain, Libertad (Ángela Molina) clutches the hands of her adult son, Mateo (Manel Llunell), as a clock ticks in the background to foreboding piano music. The doctor seated before them delivers news of a cancer diagnosis. Several days earlier, Mateo, always dressed in pink by his mother, watches her perform at a dance class. Eager to move into horror, Spanish director Miguel Martí is partnering with famed actress-producer Macarena Gómez and distributor Carlos Guerrero on an ambitious project to find their perfect hair-raising script.

The trio’s respective, Madrid-based companies, Wonder Ficción, Cilantro Films and 39 Escalones, have launched the We Are Looking for Your Horror Script initiative, putting the call out to screenwriters with a penchant for chills, thrills and the macabre to submit their works from March 2 to April 16 via the website buscamostuguiondeterror.com.

The winning script will be announced on July 13 at the Sotogrande Music Festival, one of the initiative’s many partners. The winner will initially receive €4,000 as a four-year option on the script in addition to €3,600 for three months of development work. The producers will seek to finance the production over the four-year period. A purchase of the script under previously agreed upon terms will be effective once financing is confirmed.

Inspired by the tragic case of Spanish toddler Jonathan Vega, abducted in broad daylight from a Madrid shopping center, writer-director Marc Romero (“75 Days”) is set to begin production on “Hour and Twenty” (“Hora y Veinte”), alongside producers El Orgullo Producciones, La Cochera, Sorenfilms, La Raíz, Shift Dif and Corax Films.

The directors’ second high-octane feature shoots later this month, filming in Torrevieja (Alicante), Martos (Jaén), and Madrid over a five week stretch, further sponsored by Ayuntamiento de Torrevieja (Alicante) in collaboration with Ayuntamiento de Martos (Jaén). The film is slated to hit theaters this fall.

“We chose locations such as the Parque Natural de Las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja (Alicante), because of its picturesque landscape of huge salt mountains surrounded by pink waters—it’s the perfect contrast to our thrilling, dark story,” Romero relayed.

Last Friday, the apocalyptic supernatural Spanish horror film Everyone Will Burn was given a theatrical release in select locations by Drafthouse Films. Now the film has made its way to VOD (it’s available on iTunes at This Link), and to help you decide whether or not this is one you’d like to check out, we have the trailer embedded above.

David Hebrero, who has racked up many credits as a cinematographer and a gaffer, directed Everyone Will Burn from a screenplay he wrote with Javier Kiran. The story centers on María José, an outlier in her small Spanish town, who is grieving after her young son’s suicide. As she teeters on the brink of suicide herself, she encounters a mysterious young girl caked in dirt. It is quickly revealed that the girl has telekinetic powers and might be the harbinger of the apocalyptic prophecy that exists within town legend.

The familiar proverb “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” comes to mind in director David Hebrero‘s Everyone Will Burn, a stunning technicolor horror fable set in contemporary Spain. A small town’s attempts to thwart an apocalyptic prophecy instead unwittingly fester over forty years before the film’s events, creating seismic repercussions in the present.

Hebrero, who co-wrote with Javier Kiran, is less interested in the prophecy itself and more in how the concept of evil turns the town inside out. In Hebrero and lead actor Macarena Gómez’s capable hands, Everyone Will Burn offers a devilishly compelling depiction of religious mania run amok.

Álex de la Iglesia's "30 Coins" is one of the best horror shows of the past decade, one that packs 30 different horror movies into one show that begins with a cow giving birth to a human baby that turns into a spider monster in a small Spanish village. The eight-episode season of the acclaimed horror series, produced by HBO Europe in Spain, will air on HBO and will be available to stream on Max this October.

The Fantastic Pavilion, a new hub for the genre community set to make its debut at this year’s Cannes’ Marché du Film, has revealed its seven Gala screenings.

Over May 16-21, industry professionals will get to “appreciate the diversity of genre offerings coming from all over the world,” tease the organizers. They will also be able to create new alliances and acquire titles from companies like Raven Banner, MPI Media, Screenbound and Mantícora.

“The reason for the Pavilion is that we needed space to do better business and help newcomers integrate more easily, and faster, into this constantly growing industry,” says Fantastic Pavilion executive director Pablo Guisa Koestinger. “Genre needs to take the place it deserves and it’s Fantastic Pavilion’s mission to help to achieve this.”

Everyone Will Burn (Y todos arderán) begins with a text crawl that informs us that in 1980 the residents of Razas del Monte sacrificed a baby in the hopes it would prevent the apocalypse they believed was imminent. They’ve managed to keep it covered up, until now.

That’s replaced by a view of the countryside accompanied by the sound of tortured breathing. We see the immaculately dressed María José climb up to the edge of a bridge, ready to kill herself. As she does Lucia (Sofía García) a strange-looking little girl, dirty and dishevelled, walks up behind her and asks “Mama”? Since her suicide attempt is linked to the death of her son and those responsible, including the mayor’s son, managing to escape being prosecuted this has a strong effect on her.

The 22nd Screamfest Horror Film Festival’s just released its first wave of feature films screening this year. The 2022 festival will take place October 11-20 and will be held at the Tcl Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

“We are excited to return to the Tcl Chinese Theaters since the theatrical experience is unlike anything else,” stated festival founder Rachel Belofsky. “We look forward to seeing the LA horror community in person this year and can’t wait to see these premieres on the big screen where they belong.”

The festival’s set Prime Video and Blumhouse’s Run Sweetheart Run with Shohreh Aghdashloo and Pilou Asbæk as its closing night film. David Hebrero’s feature set for North American premiere at Fantastic Fest.

Exclusive: Raven Banner has come on board to handle world sales on David Hebrero’s Spanish horror film Everyone Will Burn.

The Spanish-language feature had its premiere at last October’s Sitges festival (under the title Y Todos Arderan) and is getting its UK premiere this week at FrightFest London. A North American premiere will follow in late September at Fantastic Fest in Austin.

Genre specialist Raven Banner is planning a festival circuit showcase for the film, which will be introduced to distributors at FrightFest and the American Film Market in November.

Off the heels of a world premiere at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where he scooped the Proxima Special Jury Prize, writer-director Eduardo Casanova arrives in Montreal to screen his latest feature “La Piedad” (“La Pietà”) as part of the Queer Genre Cinema Spotlight at Fantasia. The screening marks its North American debut.

Appropriately enough given the show’s enigmatic nature, the slow drip of information about a second season of Spanish genre legend Alex de la Iglesia’s occult horror series “30 Coins” has, for the most part, been cryptic at best. That tradition continued Friday, after HBO Max confirmed the second season, when “Money Heist’s” Najwa Nimri, one of Spain’s biggest film and TV stars, teased her participation in the upcoming season.

Apart from the show’s three leads – Eduard Fernández as Father Vergara, Megan Montaner as veterinarian-turned-demon-hunter Elena and Miguel Ángel Silvestre as Mayor Paco – no other casting has yet been confirmed, but Nimri posted an Instagram story which included part of the Season 2 teaser and the phrase: “We start a new adventure,” while also tweeting #30Monedas – the show’s Spanish-language title.
