“It’s great to be on any project at the genesis, where you can really help set the vision for the show,” notes director Sarah Adina Smith while discussing her work directing the first two episodes of Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry.” She tells Gold Derby’s Latasha Ford, “It’s not just the visual tone, but also the tone of the story and the performance. And then also setting the tone for process, and making sure it’s the kind of show that people are excited to be working on every day when they come to work.” Watch the full video interview above.
Smith attended the “Lessons in Chemistry” Emmy FYC event at the Television Academy’s Wolf Theater on June 9 in North Hollywood, California. At a max-capacity screening and panel, the director was joined by executive producer Lee Eisenberg, plus actors Brie Larson, Lewis Pullman and Aja Naomi King.

Editor’s note: Deadline’s It Starts on the Page features standout limited or anthology series scripts in 2024 Emmy contention.
Forget Captain Marvel: Brie Larson plays a far more relatable feminist superhero in Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry, an adaptation of the Bonnie Garmus novel about a brainy chemist who hosts her own 1960s cooking show. While privately mourning the loss of her soulmate, Larson cooks up a program that not only delights her homemaking viewers but empowers them with knowledge about the science of cooking.
Here, Lessons In Chemistry executive producer/showrunner Lee Eisenberg reflects on the way too-limited series (come on Apple! This screams multiple seasons) — including taking on the challenge of adapting the book, having Larson as the lead and filming post-pandemic — before sharing his script for the finale, directed by Tara Miele.

Apple TV+ has an awards juggernaut on its hands with the limited series “Lessons in Chemistry.” This acclaimed adaptation of Bonnie Garmus’ book of the same name, looks set to be a major Emmy player this season. Indeed, it has already racked up a number of key nominations across multiple guilds and awards groups.
The show, created by “The Office” writer and director and “Jury Duty” creator Lee Eisenberg, stars Brie Larson as lab technician Elizabeth Zott, who takes up a new gig as the host of a 1960s cooking show after being fired. She uses her newfound position of influence to educate women about scientific topics while she strikes up a romance with Lewis Pullman‘s Calvin and a friendship with Aja Naomi King‘s Harriet. The 76th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2024 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.
As always, the all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the eventual Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed for Best Director eight times over the past seven decades, with the last three years lining up perfectly for Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Jane Campion (2021’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Chloé Zhao (2020’s “Nomadland”).
This year, just three of the DGA’s nominees also reaped directing Oscar bids: Yorgos Lanthimos...

Because the Primetime Emmys and the DGA Awards are operating on two different schedules, nominations often have little overlap. However, with the Director Guild of America (DGA) coincidentally releasing the TV nominations for its DGA Awards the same week as the postponed 75th Primetime Emmys, it’s become even more noticeable the ways in which the two awards bodies aligned and differed on shows from 2023.
For instance, DGA Awards favorite “Succession” once again dominates the Drama Series category, receiving four nominations (one less than the last time the show was eligible). While the guild was on the same page about honoring directors Andrij Parekh and Mark Mylod (a past winner) for their work on the fourth and final season of the HBO awards juggernaut, DGA voters opted to recognize Becky Martin and duo Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman for their “Succession” Season 4 episodes over Lorene Scafaria, the show’s...

The Directors Guild of America announced the nominees for television, commercials and documentary for its 76th annual DGA Awards today, a list headed by three-time winner Bill Hader and installments of the third and final season of HBO’s “Succession,” which claimed four of the five Drama Series nomination slots – the fifth going to an episode of fellow HBO hour “The Last of Us.”
The Comedy Series nomination lineup features the directors of a pair of episodes of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” along with two installments of FX’s “The Bear” (including a repeat nomination for showrunner Christopher Storer – the acclaimed “Fishes” edition from Season 2 of the series – and a first for comedian and actor Ramy Youssef).
SEEBill Hader will set multiple SAG Award records with win for ‘Barry’
The Apple TV+ limited series “Lessons in Chemistry” also scored multiple bids in the Movies For Television/Limited Series category with three.

The season finale of “Lessons in Chemistry” dropped over the Thanksgiving holiday, and the show’s three central female characters — Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson), Harriett Sloane (Aja Naomi King) and Avery Parker (guest star Rosemarie DeWitt) — ended up in places very different from Bonnie Garmus’ best-selling novel on which the show is based.
Harriet’s legal battle to prevent the construction of a freeway through her neighborhood ends on a less than triumphant note. Instead of returning to Hastings Lab as Garmus’ Zott does in the book, Larson’s Elizabeth finds her niche teaching chemistry while on her way to finally completing her doctorate in chemistry. The arrival of DeWitt’s character signals the theme of found family, which in Elizabeth’s case, truly did happen through the collision of atoms.

Warning, this piece contains spoilers for “Lessons in Chemistry” Episode 7.
“Lessons in Chemistry” showrunner Lee Eisenberg said that we in part have his wife’s “smitten” response to Calvin Harris to thank for Episode’s flashback “dip” into his childhood. As portrayed by Lewis Pullman, audiences get to learn a bit more about the chemist who won the heart of protagonist Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson).
The penultimate episode of the series, directed by Tara Miele and titled “Book of Calvin,” took viewers into Calvin’s backstory and offered a final glimpse of his meeting and courting Elizabeth before he tragically died at the end of Episode 2.
“We talked about maybe seeing him in a flashback. And we wanted to have the option,” Eisenberg told TheWrap, noting that they’d contracted Pullman for three episodes but still “didn’t even know exactly what that third episode would be.”

Exclusive: As the FilmNation Entertainment team gathered in Santa Monica this week for the American Film Market, some reflection is in order. It has been 15 years since Glen Basner started the venture. Despite the hardships facing everyone at AFM with strikes and uncertainty, what a different a decade and a half makes. The launch happened in 2008, not the most fortuitous time to launch an indie film finance and production company with global ambitions.
“Back then, Summit and Mandate were the two top companies in the space,” Basner recalled when assessing the opportunity to launch a company back then. “Mandate was sold to Lionsgate and became a U.S. distributor, and Summit started their own U.S. distribution company. There was a hole in the marketplace we thought we could fill, and become that leading American international sales agent for feature films that had no connection to the U.S. distribution world.

In a sign of Hollywood’s escalating internal tensions, a prominent Directors Guild of America member openly advocated against the election of 10 writer-directors to the guild’s board earlier this month on the grounds that they were “primarily writers” and hailed from “fringe groups.”
In a leaked email that has been shared widely in the creative community, Linda Montanti, chair of the guild’s Western Ad/Upm Council, urged a bloc of DGA voters to not support the board candidacies of a number of multihyphenates who are members of both the DGA and WGA — some of whom have been outspoken about strike issues. The list includes writer-producer Boots Riley, Oscar-winning “Coda” writer-director Sian Heder, actor-filmmaker Justine Bateman, actor-writer Paul Scheer and “Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin. The unorthodox move prompted DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter to contact the members affected to assure them that Montanti’s move was not condoned by top DGA leaders.

The Directors Guild of America announced its new Women’s Steering Committee Squad Mentorship Program along with its first class of mentees. In the program, 10 mid-career directors are each paired with filmmakers that are well established in the field.
The Wsc Squad will last for six months. Mentors will not only discuss craft and artistic opportunities with their mentees, but will also provide guidance on the unique challenges involved with navigating the film industry as women. A second round of the Wsc Squad will begin in Jan. 2022.
“We started this program because the need for mentorship and community never goes away, even when you are working at very high levels in the industry. Miller is impressive as Adrienne, who doesn’t know if she’s dead or not, as director Tara Miele’s film moves from naturalism to horror
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind meets Ghost in this relationship indie from Tara Miele about a woman who is killed – or is she? – in a car crash. Sienna Miller is brilliant as gallerist Adrienne, who’s out on a date night (“it’s cheaper than couple’s therapy”) with her partner Matteo (Diego Luna) in Los Angeles. Frazzled and sleep-deprived from parenting their six-month-old Ellie, they’re bickering when their car hits an oncoming SUV.
At the hospital, Adrienne has an out-of-body experience, watching as porters cover her bloodied body with a sheet and push the gurney along corridors to the morgue. Next, she steps out of the hospital into scenes of the future without her: Matteo at her funeral, baby Ellie grown into a teenager.

A Guide to Avoiding #OscarsSoWhite: Instructions for Academy Voters Before Filling Out Their Ballots
⊗ Film is supposed to be inclusive. But if you can’t see yourself on-screen, do you feel as if you even exist? One-third of our lives is spent at work, and the artists who express their creativity through cinema deserve to have their work seen, and not just because of the color of their skin or their gender but because when you are exposed to an experience different from your own, your creativity grows. Take a moment to review this list of eligible films, putting a check mark on the ones you have seen from this year. Ideally, that will leave you with a clearer picture of how you are contributing to cinema’s evolution with your votes.
Your goal should be to watch all of these films, but let’s be realistic. Try seeing at least 60% of them. All meet the Academy’s diversity requirements — in front of or...

“It was a beautiful experience,” says “Wander Darkly” producer Samantha Housman about the experience of bringing this unique love story to the screen. We talked with Housman as part of our “Meet the Experts” film producers panel. Watch our interview above.
Written and directed by Tara Miele, “Wander Darkly” tells the story of a couple (Sienna Miller and Diego Luna) struggling to figure out what’s real in the aftermath of a devastating car accident. “The movie is very much based on an accident that she got in with her husband,” Housman explains about Miele’s inspiration. And not just the accident: “The entire story of that movie is very much based on her marriage, and I think when you work on something that’s deeply personal to someone, it’s a very emotional experience.”

A version of this story about Sienna Miller and “Wander Darkly” first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In a film that flits back and forth through time and space in a way that could get melodramatic, Sienna Miller creates a character in “Wander Darkly” so haunted and sharp that director Tara Miele’s head trip turns deeply emotional.
“It made me ask the existential questions that I’m interested in,” Miller told TheWrap. “The idea of analyzing the relationship with your partner from its conception, noticing the moments where you pivoted and went wrong, and how corrosive those small moments of miscommunication are. The idea of going back and reflecting was a really interesting thing for me.”

When creating the intimate romance story of “Wander Darkly,” writer-director Tara Miele and stars Sienna Miller and Diego Luna found a wealth of inspiration from their life experiences.
The film, which takes a close look at mortality and life and death, was inspired by Miele’s experience surviving a severe car crash seven years ago. Experiencing a black out, a concussion and an extended recovery phase, Miele said she found a deeper appreciation for the small joys in life.
“We were at my parents’ for Thanksgiving, and they were fighting over the turkey and my kids were screaming,” she said during a Variety Streaming Room presented by Lionsgate. “And I just was so grateful to be there and so aware of how lucky we were to still be living these delicate little lives. That was the moment where I knew I wanted to bottle that and give it to as many people as I could.

Filmmakers often draw upon personal experiences for inspiration. And it was devastating car crash that was the catalyst for writer/director Tara Miele’s surreal time-bending romantic thriller “Wander Darkly,” which was released by Lionsgate on December 11. Sienna Miller and Diego Luna star as Adrienne and Matteo, a young unmarried couple with a baby and a new house who are in a horrible car crash on their way home from an emotionally taxing dinner. Adrienne actually believes she has died in the crash as drifts in and out of time in flashbacks, flashforwards, nightmares and dreams. Guiding her through this surreal experience is Matteo, who keeps popping up in her strange purgatory.

Sienna Miller and Diego Luna star in writer-director Tara Miele’s “Wander Darkly” as a married couple with a baby who get into a horrible car crash.
The film follows both of them as they contemplate and examine their relationship, but it’s unclear if they are alive or were killed in the accident. The independent film was shot on a shoestring budget in and around Los Angeles in less than a month.
I chatted with Miller and Luna from London. Miller is in the U.K. shooting “Anatomy of a Scandal,” David E. Kelley’s Netflix series adaptation of Sarah Vaughan’s novel of the same name. Luna is in London filming the untitled Cassian Andor project, one of the many new “Star Wars” series coming to Disney Plus.

In “Wander Darkly,” Sienna Miller and Diego Luna star as a Los Angeles couple who get into a horrific car accident.
What happens after the crash, isn’t entirely clear. Maybe it was a fatal crash that left one or both of them dead or maybe not. The film is a series of flashbacks and dream-like sequences that takes the audience on a trippy roller coaster ride of emotions about love and family.
Writer and director Tara Miele’s script was partially inspired by her own experience in a car crash with her husband several years ago. Both survived, but Miele tells Variety, “There were some emotional points around the accident that were so resonant for me that they never went away. I kept talking about them after the fact.”
“Wander Darkly,” which premiered at Sundance earlier this year, is Miele’s fourth feature that she has written and directed.

Collision Visions: Miele Taps Miller for Fractured Memory Exercise
For her fourth feature, director Tara Miele draws upon a traumatic event from her own past as inspiration for Wander Darkly, a narrative which utilizes an experimentally inclined non-linear narrative. The aftershocks of a major automobile collision sends one woman reeling, convinced she’s dead and residing in a cruel purgatory in which she must navigate past memories as if re-living them while simultaneously commenting on them alongside her husband, seemingly a guide on the journey who downplays her clinging to the idea she’s deceased.
Giving Sienna Miller one of her finest leading opportunities in well over a decade, it’s a mournful dream of Thanatos which is often more exciting to parse through after the end credits than it is as an actual viewing experience.…...

Sienna Miller hopes her revelation in September that the late Chadwick Boseman gave her some of his salary to make sure she was paid fairly for “21 Bridges” will create change in Hollywood. “It should get people thinking,” Miller, who stars in writer-director Tara Miele’s new drama “Wander Darkly” with Diego Luna, tells me. “Just take a beat: What that guy did for that woman — what can I do now? Let’s have some more transparency, at least. Let’s be fair.”

In the memoir, described as “a touching tribute to her eldest daughter,” Burnett tells the story of Hamilton, who won the hearts of everyone she met with her kindness, quirky humor and unconventional approach to life.
