Director René Sampaio's action/drama Brazilian Western (Faroeste Caboclo) - which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, in the Contemporary World Cinema section - has been picked up for distribution by Shout! Factory, a multi-platform entertainment company, and Cinevox, an international distribution company, in a deal that will see the film released in the USA and Canada. The announcement was made today by Shout! Factory’s founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos, and Andre Gaines, a Cinevox executive. Shout! Factory has signed a deal with California-based distributor Cinevox to release Brazilian Western (Faroeste Caboclo) in the Us and Canada.

René Sampaio directed and produced the crime drama that premiered in Toronto last autumn and  is scheduled to play the Miami International Film Festival on March 8.

Fabrício Boliveira, Isis Valverde, Felipe Abib, Antônio Calloni, César Troncoso, Marcos Paulo and Flavio Bauraqui star.

Shout! Factory acquired select theatrical, exclusive digital and broadcast and home entertainment rights for the Us and Canada and plans a strategic rollout on multiple platforms and packaged media later this year.

Shout! Factory co-founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos made the announcement with Cinevox executive Andre Gaines.

Steve McQueen’s historic drama 12 Years a Slave is to open the Stockholm International Film Festival (Nov 6-17) and is nominated in the Stockholm Xxiv Competition.

Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, the drama about free black man kidnapped from his family and sold into slavery in the 1850s debuted at Telluride and has received positive reactions throughout its festival tour of Toronto, New York and London among others.

It will be released in Sweden on Dec 20 by Ab Svensk Filmindustri.

Screenwriter John Ridley, who will be present during the festival, is nominated for the Aluminum Horse in the category Best Script.

McQueen’s Hunger won Best Directorial Debut at Stockholm in 2008.

Footballer Ronaldo due to walk the ‘green carpet’ at the Zurich Film Festival later this month; New World View opening film named as Brazilian Western.

The Zurich Film Festival, which runs from Sept 26 to Oct 6, has named the guest country for its 9th edition as Brazil.

This year’s New World View programme category will include nine films from a “cross-section of current film-makers” in Brazil.

With the World Cup Final taking place in Brazil next year, Zff has formed a partnership with FIFA. The opening of the New World View section on Sept 28 be attended by footballer Ronaldo as an ambassador of his country.

Presented to the Zff audience by director René Sampaio, the young Brazilian shooting star Fabricio Boliveira and producer Marcello Maia, Brazilian Western (Faroeste Caboclo) will kick off proceedings.

Final batch of Tiff titles were announced today and among the international hodgepodge of items trickling we find Berlin (Golden Bear winner Child’s Pose), Cannes (The Selfish Giant – Europa Cinemas Label winner and Stranger by the Lake by Alain Guiraudie), Karlovy Vary (Crystal Globe winner Le Grand Cahier ) and Locarno (Corneliu Porumboiu’s When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Metabolism) Film Fest items added to the Toronto Int. Film Festival’s Contemporary World Cinema lineup.
