During their two years in the Premier League, Crystal Palace fans have seen their side evolve: from clueless Sunday League plodders under Ian Holloway to being a tight-knit defensive unit under Tony Pulis and porous relegation certainties under Neil Warnock, all the way to their current incarnation as Alan Pardew’s cut-throat counter attackers: Crystal Palace have been a club in perpetual search of an identity with the fans never completely certain what version of their team will show up – almost on a week-to-week basis.
Uncertainty due to late forays into the transfer market or untimely managerial changes have no doubt contributed to this state of permanent flux, and with manager Alan Pardew bringing Yohan Cabaye and Connor Wickham on board, as well as the loan signing of Patrick Bamford, it’s looking like there will be further evolution still. However, this time the evolution has...

Successful modern football managers need a lot of things: tactical nous, contacts high in the game, luck and thick skin being chief among those requirements, but it’s always handy to be able to deflect blame for yourself and your team when things aren’t going well. Most managers will say something non-commital in the wake of a heavy defeat, dust themselves down and spew out cliches that “next week we start again” and nobody thinks a second thought about it.
Then there are the managers who like to entertain in their responses to post-game probing. Ian Holloway was the king of analogies, whether his side had won or lost, Arsene Wenger hilariously developed eye-sight problems whenever his side profit from bad decisions, but is as keen-eyed as a hawk when things went go the other way and Jose Mourinho and Louis Van Gaal get away...

“England are at an all-time low.. and the truth is nobody really cares.”
Those were the hard-hitting words by current Millwall and former Crystal Palace manager, Ian Holloway in a recent Daily Mirror article, and it seems he might not be wrong. A lot has been made about the attendance of 40, 181 spectators during 1-0 friendly win versus Norway, but as Sam Wallace of the Independent highlighted, coverage about it was slightly exaggerated considering that England’s home crowds are traditionally among the best in the world, despite the team’s historic lack of success:
“The fact that this week’s crowd has become a stick with which to beat Hodgson and the Fa has more to do with the historically healthy size of England’s home support, rather than the lack of it.”
Despite this, the crowd for England first post-world cup match...

It doesn’t really surprise us when the likes of Luis Suarez, Sergio Aguero or Robin Van Persie score a world class goal or grab a hat-trick in the Premier League. It doesn’t really surprise us when the likes of David Silva, Aaron Ramsey or Juan Mata slot a perfectly weighted through-ball to assist one of these goals. It doesn’t really surprise us when the likes of Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard or Eden Hazard produce that moment of magic to change a game.
But which players are capable of exerting their own special influence on a game, yet go largely unnoticed in comparison? Which players are perhaps not so well-known or recognised, yet are equally important to their clubs?

Prior to the start of the last year’s season even the most committed of Crystal Palace’s incredible fans weren’t optimistic enough to predict that the club would finish the season in a comfortable position. Virtually every bookmaker had the South East London club as the odds-on favourite to go straight back down to the Championship. Indeed, the club had miraculously emerged through the Play-Offs against teams who were supposed to beat them so very few believed that they had the fire-power to hang in there with the Premier League big boys.

Woeful West Ham’s Fa Cup mauling at the hands of Nottingham Forest has left manager Sam Allardyce on the brink at Upton Park, according to the sack race.
The 5-0 3rd round defeat on Sunday was the Hammer’s worst in the third round since way back in 1926 and compounded what has already been a truly miserable season so far.
West Ham are currently a point and a place off the foot of the Premier League table with the relegation-haunted side win-less in their last five games in all competitions.
Tonight they face Manchester City in the first leg of the Capital One Cup semi-finals and another demoralising defeat could lead to Allardyce getting the boot, regardless of the fact the club’s owners only this week issued a vote of confidence.
Allardyce’s odds of becoming the next topflight coaching casualty have tumbled in recent...

West Brom have sacked manager Steve Clarke after a disastrous turn of results left them just two points and two places above the relegation zone in the Premier League.
Clarke had earlier led the Baggies through an impressive period of form that saw his side pick up a 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford followed by spirited draws against Arsenal and Chelsea.
But Albion’s 1-0 defeat by Cardiff on Saturday – their fourth straight league loss – proved to be the end of Clarke’s reign at the club, a year-and-a-half after replacing Roy Hodgson.
Clarke’s dismissal was followed by the sacking of Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas on Monday, meaning a quarter of Premier League clubs have dismissed their managers this season as West Brom launch their search for a replacement.

The scythe has swung a third time this season and claimed the head of another Premier League manager, with Martin Jol predictably becoming the latest casualty of the managerial merry-go-round.
Sacked on Sunday, Jol becomes the third topflight boss to lose their job this term, following Ian Holloway and Paolo di Canio, begging the question – who’s next for the chop?
The answer – and most bookmakers agree – is Andre Villas-Boas.
The Tottenham supremo is on the brink at White Hart Lane following his side’s 6-0 demolition at the hands of Manchester City a week ago, and even had his tactics publicly called into question by Sir Alan Sugar recently.
Currently ninth in the table following their draw with United at the weekend, Spurs face a real battle to finish in the top four this season, and Villas-Boas could pay the ultimate price if results do not improve by Christmas.

Two phenomenons happened to Crystal Palace at the weekend, first they appointed a new manager, then they won a game in the Premier League, and an away one at that! Both events went against the form book, after the club’s long search for a coach and a win began to take on a frenzied approach.
The Eagles conducted one of the longest managerial hunts in history, with previous incumbent Ian Holloway resigning over a month ago in a move that displayed levels of altruism rarely seen in the top flight. Managers usually stick it out until the club decides they can go no further, but for the good of the club, Holloway resigned from his post in the hope that a manager could come in and save them from relegation.
The trouble was, no one wanted the job, with the position at Selhurst Park seemingly tainted...

Can Hull pile further pressure on still-managerless Crystal Palace when the two sides meet in the Premier League on Saturday?
Team News
Hull manager Steve Bruce could hand a return to goalkeeper Allan McGregor, who has returned from his thigh injury quicker than expected.
Robbie Brady and Robert Koren are also back in contention after recovering from injuries of their own, but Stephen Quinn is out after picking up a hamstring injury on international duty.
Crystal Palace have been boosted by news that Jonny Williams is fit again, but Adlene Guedioura remains out with serious injury after fracturing ribs and suffering a partly collapsed lung earlier this month.
(BBC)
Key Stats
There have only been five goals scored in the five league matches played at the Kc Stadium this season.

Martin Jol’s Fulham side slipped to a third straight defeat at Anfield, as Liverpool tore them to shreds in a 4-0 drubbing. Four Fulham shots on goal compared to 32 from Liverpool tells its own story, and it was a meek surrender from a team who are currently playing their way into a serious relegation scrap.
An own-goal from Fernando Amorebieta mid-way through the first half was what Liverpool just about deserved, as Fulham held their own relatively trouble-free in the opening exchanges. However, a bullet header from Martin Skrtel confirmed their surrender, and a Luis Suarez double either side of half-time increased the pressure on Jol to unbearable levels.
It is fast approaching that time of year when the trigger fingers of owners and chairmen get itchy, and the financial cost of relegation becomes too hard to risk. Ian Holloway at Crystal Palace has already departed,...

The Premier League era has not been kind to Crystal Palace. Four immediate relegations make for an infamous history and that past generates a sense of foreboding and inevitability about the outcome of the Eagles’ fifth attempt at top flight survival.
Desperate to confound the critics and break out of this familiar cycle, Ian Holloway recruited en masse over the summer. Palace were the busiest Premier League club signing 16 players in the transfer window. Holloway later admitted this was a mistake.
“We changed too much too quickly,” he lamentably told reporters at a press conference last month as he quit Selhurst Park by mutual consent after 11 months in charge. The whirlwind promotion via the playoffs came too soon for the Eagles.
That dressing room full of new faces was said to have eroded the spirit forged as Palace defied the odds by coming up from The Championship.

Arsenal were the big winners last weekend – their 2-0 victory over Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to 5 points after five of the chasing six dropped points. Arsène Wenger’s side followed that up with an impressive result, beating Borussia Dortmund 1-0 in Germany on Wednesday night in the Champions League.
The Gunners travel to Manchester United on Sunday. David Moyes’ side were victorious again last week, beating Fulham 3-1 and closing the gap between them and 4th place to 3 points after Tottenham drew 0-0 with Everton. United are coming off of a disappointing 0-0 draw with Real Sociedad in the Champions League.
Chelsea will be looking to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat at Newcastle when they host West Brom this weekend. José Mourinho has won 51 of his 65 Premier League games drawing the other 14 and his Blues are heavy favourites to pick up 3 points this weekend.

Who would be a Premier League manager? The hire and fire culture of football coaching is no better illustrated than in England’s top flight. Average lengths of time in charge are ever decreasing.
Clubs take succour from the hundreds of millions of pounds worth of TV revenue being in the Premier League provides. If that status is threatened chairmen up and down the country are more than prepared to wield the axe.
Those in the firing line can be swiftly replaced by foreign coaches, desperate men out of work looking for a way back into the beautiful games and, on occasion, by a promotion from within.
We look at five top flight teams and their bosses who are feeling the heat.

In a footballing climate as hostile as the one we are currently living through, many a Premier League manager will be sweating over their futures as we approach the run-up to Christmas.
The so-called managerial merry-go-round has been spinning faster than ever since summertime, with Sir Alex Ferguson vacating his post at Manchester United, Manuel Pellegrini replacing the axed Roberto Mancini at neighbours City and Jose Mourinho returning to Chelsea.
Then there has been the dismissal of Paolo Di Canio at Sunderland and departure by mutual consent of Ian Holloway at Crystal Palace, which all leaves us wondering – who’s next?
In the wake of these upheavals, Arsene Wenger has become the longest-serving manager in the English topflight.
His closest rival to that title? Alan Pardew, now approaching his third year at Newcastle United.
However, following yet another slump against their bitter Tyne & Wear derby rivals Sunderland at the weekend,...

Even the most avid Saints and Fulham fans will have to question why Sky Sports chose to air this match at the same time as El Classico. There is no glamour or glitz about it, just as there wasn’t for the visit of West Ham in September, nor was there on Monday night when the Craven Cottage outfit travelled to Crystal Palace.
Having said that, that does not make the game any less entertaining, just that from a business standpoint, there are more attractive games to show. Indeed, Fulham’s trip to Selhurst Park provided two of the best goals seen so far this season in a solid display.

Arsenal travel to Selhurst Park on Saturday lunchtime hoping to continue an impressive start to the season, which has seen them widely tipped as title contenders. Indeed, since their opening day defeat to Aston Villa, the Gunners have picked up 19 points from a possible 21 and have charged to the top of the Premier League table. However, the side go into the match off the back of a loss to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday night and will be hoping there is no lingering hangover from that defeat.
Crystal Palace, meanwhile, have picked up just three points from their opening eight games, making this their worst ever start to a Premier League season. To make matters worse, manager Ian Holloway left the club by mutual consent on Wednesday, claiming he felt “worn out” by the job. Keith Millen will, therefore, take temporary charge as caretaker manager.

Former Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has emerged as the early favourite to replace Ian Holloway at Crystal Palace.
The 55-year-old has been out of work since he quit the Potters in May following successful seven-year spell at the Britannia Stadium.
Holloway resigned as Palace manager last night, less than a year after taking charge, and just eight games into the Premier League season.
The Eagles have won just one game since their return to the top-flight, against fellow strugglers Sunderland, and lost 4-1 at Fulham on Monday night.
Speculation about Holloway’s future intensified after the game and the former Blackpool boss confirmed his exit claiming he did not have the energy for a relegation fight.
Welshman Pulis was immediately installed as the favourite to take charge with Palace Chairman Steve Parish confirming they will consider the 55-year-old.
Parish told TalkSport: “He’s never been relegated and he’s out of work.

Struggling Crystal Palace were thrown into further chaos last night when manager Ian Holloway took the decision to step down from his role “by mutual consent”.
The former Blackpool boss only joined the London club in November 2012 and guided them into the Championship Play-Offs, where they gained promotion to the Premier League after beating Watford 1-0 at Wembley earlier this summer.
However, upon being reinstated in the topflight, Palace have found life difficult after crashing to seven defeats in their first eight games, leaving them second-bottom of the table.
The Eagles are now without a win since beating fellow strugglers Sunderland 3-1 on the final day of August and were hammered 4-1 by Fulham in what proved to be Holloway’s final game in charge last Monday.
That result leaves the club five points adrift of safety, with chairman Steve Parish commenting Holloway’s decision to walk...

Liverpool host Crystal Palace in this match up that pits Brendan Rogers against his opposite counterpart Ian Holloway. Liverpool have been on an impressive run of form so far this season amassing a massive 13 points from 6 games. No one would have predicted that after the first few games, that the top four would include Liverpool or Tottenham so both will do everything possible in order to stay within reach of the high-flying Gunners who occupy 1st place.
Palace find themselves second from bottom and have not soared to the heights that Holloway would have hoped for them. One more round of Premier League action before the international break kicks off at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday lunchtime as Manchester City look to bounce back from their midweek thrashing by Bayern Munich against the league’s last unbeaten team, Everton.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side are 2 points below Everton and 5 points behind league leaders Arsenal heading into the weekend.
Liverpool returned to winning ways last Sunday against bottom-of-the-league Sunderland and on Saturday they host the team 19th, Crystal Palace. Luis Suárez returned from his 10-game suspension to bag a brace last weekend and eyes will be on him again against Ian Holloway’s side whom have lost 5 of their 6 Premier League games since promotion back to England’s top flight.

After the two-week international break, Premier League football returns on Saturday with a lunchtime matchup between Manchester United and Crystal Palace. Champions against play-off champions, this match may seem a walkover for United at home, but poor results against Chelsea and Liverpool, followed by a farcical transfer window, have contributed to a less-than-rosy start for David Moyes’ team. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace comes to Old Trafford after an impressive 3-1 home victory against Sunderland and a number of roster changes following a frantic deadline day.

Crystal Palace are turning to Aston Villa’s Barry Bannan and Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner in order to bolster their squad for this season’s relegation fight, according to Metro.
The Eagles won their first game of the season on Saturday and are looking to keep the feel-good factor at Selhurst Park by signing the two Premier League stars.
The Scot is reportedly at Selhurst Park having a medical and Bendtner was apparently sighted at Palace’s training ground earlier this afternoon.
With Bannan frozen out at Villa Park and Bendtner unwanted at Arsenal, Palace boss Ian Holloway is hoping to lure the pair with promises of first-team football.
Bannan hasn’t played since March and with Arsenal keen to see the back of the Danish striker – they’re reportedly paying £3 million to encourage his departure – Palace look to soon add their 14th and 15th signings of the window.

A tale of two penalties – one missed, one scored – meant both Stoke City and Crystal Palace started the opening week of the Premier League with one-nil losses. Stoke were so close to a good point away at Anfield but Simon Mignolet saved Jonathan Walters’ penalty, while Palace held out Champions League chasing Tottenham for most of the game and showed enough to inspire belief in the Palace faithful that this season will not be about thrashings and preparing for a better future.
For new manager Mark Hughes, the visit of one of the promoted sides presents a golden chance to pick up his first Stoke win. For Ian Holloway, a trip to the Potteries offers potential to pick up a very creditable draw, and a win would really shake up some of the pundits who have, to a man, consigned the Eagles to relegation already.

We wait all summer and speculate on transfers, score lines and the managerial merry-go-round all in anticipation for the big kick-off, then it has gone sooner than you can say ‘What? Tottenham Hotspur were the victors at Selhurst Park today in their opening game of the season against newly promoted Crystal Palace.
Spurs got things underway with new signing Roberto Soldado kicking off alongside Gylfi Sigurdsson.
It was a cagey start from both teams as they found their feet, with neither goalkeeper really being tested in the early stages.
The first real chance came in the eighth minute when Mousa Dembele drove forward and found Danny Rose on the left wing. The full back crossed to give Roberto Soldado his first sniff of goal, but the Spaniard headed both high and wide.
Spurs started to take charge and, just a minute later, Kyle Walker and Aaron Lennon combined to threaten down the right, but Lennon’s final ball was deflected out for a corner which came to nothing.
Two minutes later, another Spurs debutant – Paulinho – thought he was through on goal,...

Marouane Chamakh is set to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed move to Crystal Palace, according to Team Talk.
The Arsenal striker will become Palace manager Ian Holloway’s sixth signing of the summer with the deal expected to be announced within the next few days.

Barclays Premier League newcomers Crystal Palace are now the surprise leaders in the race to sign striker Darren Bent, according to the Mirror.
Bent, 29, has made no secret of the fact that he wants to leave Aston Villa where he has found opportunities limited, but interest so far has only come from Fulham and Newcastle United.
Villa themselves have already rejected three advances from the Cottagers for his services, while Newcastle Director of Football Joe Kinnear is looking at the forward as he attempts to bolster their attacking options.
However, sources close to the player suggest he would prefer a move back to London – having played for Charlton Athletic and Tottenham Hotspur in the not to distant past – and would not rule out joining Palace particularly as he hails from that part of the capital.

However, sources close to the player suggest he would prefer a move back to London – having played for Charlton Athletic and Tottenham Hotspur in the not to distant past – and would not rule out joining Palace particularly as he hails from that part of the capital.
His current employers have reportedly set a £6 million asking price for a man who has...

Crystal Palace are expected to sign Sevilla youngster Jose Campana this week, according to the Mail Online
The newly-promoted Premier League side hope to secure the deal when the Spain Under-20 captain flies in to London to complete a medical today.
Campana, 20, is one of Spain’s biggest prospects and his immediate future will be at Selhurst Park.
The midfielder, who is renown for his neat touches and one-touch passing abilities, will fly to London today after Palace agreed a fee with Sevilla for around £2 million, plus a sell-on fee for the player.
Campana’s fledgling career has been affected by niggling injuries so far, but the starlet appears to be over them now and played a full part in the Under-20 World Cup recently.
He was a member of the Under-20 Spanish team that competed at the tournament in Turkey and reached the quarter-final stage, before being eliminated by Uruguay after extra-time.

Ever since the Pozzo family acquired Watford Football Club from the hands of former owner Lawrence Bassini in June 2012, it seems there has been a never ending wall of criticism from most quarters of the game. Many have called it cheating, others have labelled Watford as some form of feeder club or more bluntly as ‘Udinese B’ – in reference to one of the two other clubs that the Italians own, the others being – as you may have guessed – Udinese as well as Granada who are currently members of La Liga.
There is nothing illegal about what the Hornets have done, and in many respects the majority of the disapproval has largely come from misinformed Journalists who have followed the situation and the loan signings who included Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra, Cristian Battocchio and former Italian international Marco Cassetti, among others who went on to become key fixtures in the Watford...

It could be said that the odds are stacked against Crystal Palace surviving their first season back in the Premier League. After all, they were fortunate to make it back into England’s top division anyway after a run of poor form in the latter stage of last season nearly cost them their place in the play-offs, which ultimately they were victorious in. With star player Wilfried Zaha heading to Manchester United and fellow Barclays Premier League new boys Cardiff and Hull looking to bolster their squads, it is clear for all to see that Palace need to make some significant signings in order to stand a chance at staying up.
However, if there is one thing that manager Ian Holloway has on his side – it’s his personality. The current Palace boss has the advantage that he has been able to build solid relationships with former players which may...

Football is one of the most glorious forms of entertainment, and the drama that accompanies the sport has made it a hugely profitable international commodity.
The UEFA European Under-21 Championship will provide the football lover with a chance to witness some of the best young players in the world. With the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Monaco, Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal & Tottenham Hotspur all in the market for bright, young talent, many of these youngsters are auditioning for big money moves.
This piece will focus on the prodigies of the beautiful game, the players that make you sit up, wipe the pizza crumbs of your t-shirt, and take notice. Unashamedly, I have focused on players who have the skill to excite, the ability to exhilarate, thus, perhaps it should come as no surprise that showboaters and speed merchants are heavily represented here.
Ian Holloway once suggested he was the unluckiest man...

Reading’s unceremonious sacking of Brian McDermott on Monday has been met with derision from across the footballing world, as figures from the game, journalists and fans alike bemoan another potentially short-sighted decision to let go of a good manager in an attempt to stave off relegation late in the day. It’s an increasingly common occurrence in the Premier League – but does it ever actually pay off?
The lack of sentiment shown by Reading majority shareholder Anton Zingarevich was apparent. In his time in charge of Reading since the end of 2009, McDermott had taken a struggling Championship side and over-achieved, steadying the ship before taking them back into the top flight, where they have fought a brave battle against relegation despite having the weakest squad in the Premier League. But that wasn’t enough for Zingarevich, though, and the axe fell on McDermott with just nine games remaining this season.

With Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract wrangle with Real Madrid still ongoing, numerous reports both in Spain and England have linked the swashbuckling Portuguese attacker with a return to the club where he forged his name, Manchester United. This is a rumour that just refuses to go away, and one that many seem to believe to be a distinct possibility if Los Blancos grow tired of the dispute with their talisman. Ronaldo has previously stated that he is ‘unhappy’, for reasons he claims only the club president, Florentino Perez, is aware of, and despite his back-track on that statement, vehemently pledging his allegiance to Madrid to the press, it’s difficult to ignore.
With all the speculation bound to cause further disturbance for both the player and his employers, could a possible return to Old Trafford be on the cards? Though for all United fans it would be a wondrous occasion...

Wilfried Zaha is on the brink of signing for Manchester United from Crystal Palace in a £12 million deal, according to The Sun.
The winger had been linked with a move to Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham, but Sir Alex Ferguson looks to have stolen a march on the London duo to sign the promising 20-year old.
United have reportedly held talks with Championship side Palace over the potential deal, which could be worth an initial £8 million, plus add-ons, as well as the loaning of United fringe players to boost manager Ian Holloway’s promotion bid.
Holloway previously stated that he wants the player to remain focused.
He said:
“When a young player gets a chance to move and the club say no, we need to manage that disappointment and refocus that person.”
However, according to The Sun, he believes United’s offer to be the best one currently on the table,...

Manchester United are in pole position to land Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha and are “confident” of signing him in the summer, according to a report on Espn.
The promising 20-year old has been courted by a number of other Premier League sides as well as United, including London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham, and his future has been of much speculation recently.
Arsenal were thought at one point to be leading the way for the Ivorian-born national – who can play either up front or on the wing – as Gunners boss Arsene Wenger seeks a replacement in midfield for Theo Walcott, who is being moved to a striker’s position in the side.
But Man United have apparently stolen a march on their rivals, and the current standings of both sides in the Premier League – Arsenal are 6th and United are top – may have factored into the player’s logic.
