Godard fined for using work of author
PARIS -- French director Jean-Luc Godard has been charged and fined by a Paris court for using text from a book by French writer Viviane Forrester in his 1987 film King Lear without her consent and without crediting her, French news agency Agence France Presse reported Wednesday. The court ordered Godard and his production company Bodega Films to pay Forrester and Les Editions du Seuil, the publisher of her book La Violence du Calme (The Violence of Calm) 5,000 ($6,315) each in damages, AFP reported. The judge also prohibited the film from being shown until the author is added onto the credits. Godard's King Lear, starring Woody Allen, Norman Mailer, Peter Sellers and Burgess Meredith, was released in 2002. Neither Godard nor Bodega Films could be reached for comment.
