This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha Revisits Vikram Bhatt’s Life Mein Kabhie Kabhiee
Image
We have a new installment of Subhash K Jha’s fabulous series This Day That Year as he revisits Vikram Bhatt’s Life Mein Kabhie Kabhiee, which released in 2007 and featured Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea, Nauheed Cyrusi, Anjori Alagh, Nikita Anand, Sammir Dattani, Rajat Bedi, and Mohnish Bahl.

Vikram Bhatt’s best-scripted work to date is about the dreams and ambitions of the very young and not-so-young. Dreams die hard in Life Mein Kabhie Kabhiee(Lmkk). As they fall with a thud to the ground, Vikram Bhatt, displaying a sensitivity seldom evident in his films, catches the tears and laughter and splashes them in this film about five friends and their scattered, shattered dreams.

The film moves into various strands. Manoj Tyagi’s screenplay weaves in and out these warm, lived-in lives with a dextrous flourish.

Like many of Bhatt’s works, Lmkk is suffused with characters. Miraculously, they all...

Subhash K Jha Selects His 10 Favourite Films Of 2012
That 2012 began with an overwrought hyper-melodramatic brutal and tumultuous remake of Agneepath and ended with Yash Chopra’s muted mellow all-heart-no-malice ode to romance Jab Tak Hai Jaan seems indicative of the direction that Bollywood seems headed for. The journey, as we can see, is unpredictable and largely exciting. Looking back, some films of 2012 that fetched hype-star ratings seem bloated and over-eager to please either critics or the masses, but never both. Luckily the films that were truly meritorious did get a place under the swoon.

Each year Bollywood surprises us, and not always in a good way. 2012 seems like a watershed year even by the continuously evolving standards of filmmaking set by envelope-pushing directors who have filtered into filmdom during the past years. 2012 was the year when Tigmanshu Dhulia, Sujoy Ghosh and Shoojit Sircar came into their own with films that took mainstream cinema to new heights. It was...

Heroine Movie Review
In news for more controversial reasons than one, Heroine like all Madhur Bhandarkar movies was on the must-watch films list of many. For a country constantly fascinated with the inside tittle-tattle of the glamour world, salacious gossips has many takers. When a filmmaker intents to throw mirror on the colorful life of mainstream actress in his bare-all voyeuristic way, there can’t be a better subject for the commercial masala-loving Indian cinema audiences. But such narratives have a shelf-life. Having indulged in realistic portrayal of the showbiz in his previous films, there is just about that much surface that can be scratched whilst having to maintain a conservative approach at the risk of offending anyone. How then does Madhur make Heroine any different from his earlier flicks? Read on.

Heroine is the flashback tell-tale of actress Mahi Arora (Kareena Kapoor), her journey from lows to lows as narrated by TV presenter.

Finding the other Hero for Aishwarya's 'Heroine'
With Madhur successfully finding his 'Heroine' in Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and her Hero in Arjun Rampal, his next big decision seems to lie in finding the right choice for the second male lead opposite Aishwarya.

Since the script demands that the second male lead should be someone younger to Aishwarya, the front contenders for the role are Ranbir Kapoor, Imran Khan and Prateik Babbar. While Ranbir and Imran were the obvious initial choices, Prateik's name popped up during the creative teams brain-storming. Since the actress hasn't been paired with any of the Gen-y actors before, if Ranbir, Imran or Prateik are eventually chosen for the role, it will be an interesting pairing of sorts on-screen.

Further clarifying speculations on the story of the film, Madhur tweeted 'A section of the Media think film Heroine is based on the life of Marilyn Monroe And Liz Taylor, this is Not True, my...

"My next are a musical and a comedy, not TV serials" - Madhur Bhandarkar
All those who believed that Madhur Bhandarkar can only make grim and dark cinema with realism and expose thrown in are up for surprise beginning 2010. While filming on Jail is about to be begin soon, a dark subject like this would give way to more feel-good cinema for at least a couple of years. That's because post Jail, Madhur Bhandarkar would take a break from 'reality' cinema and instead move on to more entertaining genres like a musical and a comedy. "Jail has being designed as a quickie and once the shooting would be through, I will extend myself to different genres and style of cinema as well. The two subjects that I have in mind would be a musical and a comedy respectively. I will begin work on them immediately after Jail is wrapped up. Both of them would be produced under the banner of 'Bhandarkar Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.
