Christopher Nolan's Bold Batman Reboot Began With A Box Office Disappointment
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"He is the most credible and realistic of the superheroes, and has the most complex human psychology. His superhero qualities come from within. He's not a magical character." Those are the words of Christopher Nolan (via Variety) speaking when he was announced by Warner Bros. as the director of the then-mysterious "Batman" reboot, which we would come to know as "Batman Begins."

Those words may seem trite now, but it's also easy to forget that when Nolan made that statement in 2003, we were just six years removed from Joel Schumacher's much-maligned "Batman & Robin," with George Clooney's Bruce Wayne, the pun-heavy Mr. Freeze, and yes, the Bat-nipples. So the idea of a director thinking about the legendary DC Comics superhero in realistic terms was,...

Comics Interview: Dissected – Issue #16
Image
Welcome to the latest instalment of our Dissected feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and looks back at Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft (Dak).

Up Front

The whole of the Up Front is dedicated to talking up Southern Knights, there is even a free insert preview to #8 of Southern Knights. Ads for the series have run in nearly every issue of Ci and with #8 it officially becomes a Ci publication. Just as a word of warning I found this to be a mixed issue of Comics Interview, there are two each of writer and artist interviews, and the cover feature isn’t the main interview!

Arnold Drake

Arnold Drake is something of an enigma. He created Doom Patrol and Deadman, as well as working on X-Men and Batman. The former would go...

The Drastic Rule That Banned Batman Villains From A Classic DC Animated Series
Image
The "Bat-embargo." If you're a fan of the classic DC Animated Universe (Dcau), the words probably feel like a chill in the night. If you're not, then let me explain.

See, DC Comics can be fickle about which of its characters can appear on television, and where. During the 2000s, this mostly impacted Batman and his supporting cast. Kevin Conroy's Batman was a regular on "Justice League Unlimited," which aired alongside the unconnected cartoon "The Batman," and Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" marked the return of the Dark Knight after his 1990s silver screen fall.

Reportedly, then-dc Comics President Paul Levitz was worried that kids would be confused about all of these Batmen. How would they be able to tell multiple versions of the same characters apart when they were all appearing at the same time? Hence, the Bat-embargo came into effect around 2004 (when "The Batman" debuted and "Justice League...

Sorry, Starfire: Raven Is the Best Teen Titan And These 8 Reasons Reveal Why
Image
The Teen Titans have many beloved heroes in their ranks, but there's one hero who stands out as the team's most valuable asset. Some might assume that Starfire is the strongest Titan, and though she's certainly formidable in her own right, Raven is without question the greatest source of power in the roster. She isn't just an asset in terms of what she contributes in battle, either; Raven's abilities can help her teammates just as much as they can harm opponents.

Many of the Teen Titans got their start in DC lore as sidekicks of more prominent superheroes. For instance, Dick Grayson founded the team as Robin long before he became Nightwing, and Wally West joined as the Kid Flash to Barry Allen's Flash. Raven, however, stands out as a hero in her own right. The daughter of Trigon has incredible magic at her disposal that proves she's the best Titan around,...

Image
Warning: contains spoilers for The Question: All Along the Watchtower #1!

The Question is one of DCs most underrated characters, and their new book: The Question: All Along the Watchtower restores them to relevance once again. A cult favorite among DC fans, as well as the inspiration for Watchmens Rorschach, the Question is a character that can bring out the best in their creators, and All Along the Watchtower is no exception as it pushes the character to new heights.

The Question: All Along the Watchtower writer Alex Segura has also written novels set in the Star Wars universe.

The Question: All Along the Watchtower #1 is written by Alex Segura and drawn by Cian Tormey. Quick Links The Huntress in the DC Comics Universe, Explained How The Huntress Has Been Portrayed in Other Media The Huntress Could Thrive on Television Just Like The Penguin Why Helena Bertinelli's Huntress is Perfect for The Batman Part II

The following contains spoilers for The Penguin Season 1 now streaming on Max.

As HBO's The Penguin draws to a close, the second entry in Matt Reeves's Batman epic crime saga is complete. While there are other projects reportedly in development, the next chapter will be The Batman Part II. However, given how The Penguin has continued to flesh out the story The Batman began, the second film should introduce Gotham City's most controversial hero: The Huntress.

Originally imagined as the multiversal daughter of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle, the Huntress became something different in the past few decades. Instead of living up to the heroic legacy of her parents,...

Legion of Super-Heroes Is the Greatest DC Comics Series You’ve Never Read
Image
The Justice League. The Teen Titans. Heck, even the Outsiders. Most comic readers know these superhero teams from DC Comics, and can probably name at least a few key members, if not favorite stories.

But for a while in the 1980s, one team topped them all, rivaling even Chris Claremont’s X-Men run for comic shop supremacy: Legion of Super-Heroes won over readers with its futuristic space opera and its cast of unique characters.

The basic premise of the Legion of Super-Heroes is simple. 1000 years in the future, a group of superpowered teens take inspiration from Superboy and become heroes, most using powers they gained from their native planets. Like the best Superman stories, Legion tales tend to be optimistic and hopeful, certain that humanity can overcome its problems and work toward a better tomorrow.

But actually reading the Legion can be a bit daunting. Because of the future setting,...

Crisis on Infinite Earths Trilogy Redeems a Controversial Death From the Comics
Image
The Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths movie trilogy concludes the Tomorrowverse by creating a new continuity for future stories. The Huntress' comic book history is controversial due to her death in 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths, and the reboots and retcons that followed. The Crisis movie trilogy avoids the comics' mistakes with The Huntress by not complicating her history and by emphasizing her importance to Batman's emotional growth.

The following contains spoilers for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three, now available on Digital.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three ended the Tomorrowverse with only 10 movies, presumably setting up the next phase of stories in the DC Animated Movie Universe (Dcamu). Based on Marv Wolfman's and George Prez's 1985 event comic Crisis on Infinite Earths, the DC Multiverse heroes similarly find themselves in a losing battle against the Anti-Monitor, a god-like being whose sole...

DC's Ultra-Powerful New Justice Society Has Officially Nerfed the Justice League - Why Aren't They Leading the Dcu?
Image
DC's New Golden Age initiative reinvigorates the Justice Society of America for modern audiences, showcasing them as a powerful rival to the Justice League. The Jsa, originating in the 1940s, is revamped with updated characterizations and morally relevant storylines, elevating their significance. With the Jsa now established in the DC Universe, they seek a distinct role separate from the Titans, emphasizing uniqueness over sheer magnitude.

Wonder Woman's Forgotten Daughter Fury Is a Superman-Level Powerhouse
Image
Fury, Wonder Woman's daughter, once proved to be stronger than Supergirl, easily overpowering the Kryptonian in combat, displaying a strength-level with few parallels besides Superman in the DC Universe. Fury's battles against major heavy hitters like the New God Big Barda showcased her immense strength and power. Fury's redemption arc ultimately saved the DC Universe from a massive threat; had she remained a villain, she could have become one of the most dangerous antagonists in the Dcu.

Wonder Woman is well known as one of the most physically powerful characters in the DC Universe, but exactly how powerful she is tends to waver depending on the writer. However, one version of Wonder Woman's daughter proved just how powerful an Amazon can be, when she took down Supergirl with ease.

World's Finest Annual #1 by Paul Levitz and Diogenes Neves offered readers a glimpse at the might of Wonder Woman's daughter Fury,...

The Justice League Animated Series That Never Was: WB Forced Bruce Timm to Drop a Revolutionary Show Idea to Focus on ‘Superman: The Animated Series’
Image
Starting with Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series, the Dcau has emerged as one of the most revered adaptations of the DC Universe to date. Over time, it has expanded to include numerous series and movies, continually introducing a plethora of DC characters across various projects.

Bruce Timm’s Justice League animated series

However, not all proposed projects saw the light of day, with some being shelved indefinitely. One such project was an animated series Superman’s Justice League, which was ultimately axed by Warner Bros. executives in favor of prioritizing Superman: The Animated Series.

Bruce Timm Planned to Introduce Justice League Alongside Superman

Following the success of Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series, Bruce Timm introduced Justice League in 2001. However, this was not his original intention for the subsequent TV show featuring the superhero ensemble.

DC Comics President Forbade Justice League: The Animated Series from Introducing a Popular Superhero Team, Didn’t Want Them Turned into a Joke
Image
DC’s Justice League: The Animated Series is one of the most entertaining to watch, as it tells a dynamic story with rich and compelling storytelling, perfectly integrated with stunning animation. The series has perfected the art of engaging narratives, where each episode presents a new challenge to our heroes, keeping the viewers at the edge of their seats.

Justice League

Even though the superhero team was so popular among the viewers another team of equally popular heroes was supposed to make their appearance on the show. it was the decision of the DC Comics President, Paul Levitz, who forbade the decision of their appearance. While it may look like a bad judgment to the fans initially, it was a well-planned decision from the President as it would have made them look outdated and a joke to a new generation of fans.

Zack Snyder's Watchmen Was A Box Office Failure, But It Shaped A Decade Of DC Movies
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

If you weren't a fully-grown (or nearly-grown) nerd in summer 2008, it's hard to properly convey the hype that followed the first trailer for Zack Snyder's "Watchmen." Really, you had to be there. But here's a representative bit of trivia: throughout all of 2007, the "Watchmen" graphic novel had sold 100,000 copies; after the trailer dropped, 75,000 copies were sold in the space of a single week. DC Comics had to order a print run of more than a million copies in 2008 just to keep up with demand.

"As far as we can tell from our conversations with the book industry people, there has never been a trailer that did this," Paul Levitz, then-president of DC, told the New York Times. The impact of that first "Watchmen" trailer remains unmatched.

"I Will Take You to a Hell Without Exit or End": 10 Best Darkseid Quotes That Prove He's the Ultimate Supervillain
Image
in the history of comics, there's never been a villain who could measure up to Darkseid. Created in 1970 by creative powerhouse Jack Kirby, Darkseid is both an abiding image of absolute evil and a specific commentary on fascist ideology. Here, then, are the 10 greatest Darkseid quotes that prove he's the definitive supervillain in a genre packed with pretenders - a god of evil and oppression whose one redeeming feature (if it can even be called that) is an unparalleled way with words.

Aquaman 2 Just Hinted at the DC Hero’s Darkest Storyline

“I’m gonna kill Aquaman and everything he holds dear,” promises Black Manta in the trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. “I’m gonna murder his family and burn his kingdom to ash.”

Such boasts are par for the course among supervillains like Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), and most people watching the trailer dismiss it as usual bad guy bluster. After all, the first Aquaman movie earned over $1 billion in 2018 because of its lighthearted tone. Director James Wan and writers David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, working off a story they wrote with Wan and comics scribe Geoff Johns, crafted a fun script that took advantage of Aquaman’s role in the popular imagination and star Jason Momoa‘s undeniable charisma. The movie had plenty of genuinely cool sequences, such as an epic undersea battle and a duel between Aquaman Arthur Curry and his half-brother Orm the Ocean...

Thor's Hammer Mjolnir Can Officially Be Destroyed by a Shock Villain
Image
Warning! Spoilers for Avengers: War Across Time #4 ahead!Mjolnir, the famous enchanted hammer of Thor, can be wielded by few Marvel Comics characters and damaged by even fewer. Made of the supremely powerful metal known as Uru, Mjolnir is Thor’s greatest and most famous weapon, with the Asgardian superhero using it to enhance his powers and fighting abilities and, in certain scenarios, determine if a being is worthy of potentially using it. One of Thor’s more obscure adversaries, however, is not only able to bypass Mjolnir’s restrictive enchantment but is also capable of destroying the legendary hammer.

In Avengers: War Across Time #4, by Paul Levitz and Alan Davis, Mjolnir has been stolen from Thor by Sindri, King of the Dwarves. As revealed in previous issues, Sindri forged the mighty hammer and can bypass its worthiness enchantment despite being far from worthy of the weapon. More shockingly, Sindri...

But every fan knows that Thor’s greatest strength is his connection to his hammer, Mjolnir.

More than a few heroes like Captain America and even Storm of the X-Men have wielded Mjolnir in the past, but it’s occasionally been wielded by enemies of Thor as well. The character's backstory has been updated and fiddled with over the years, but the elements that have remained pretty consistent are that he is of ancient Egyptian origin who's granted superhuman powers by the wizard Shazam, and while he starts off as a good man, later becomes corrupted.

Like many comic book characters who've been around for ages, Black Adam has evolved and undergone numerous changes throughout. While he is generally portrayed as a villain, he's gone through periods of reform to take on a more heroic persona. While Black Adam spent much of his time in the DC Comics universe as the primary villain to Billy Batson-slash-Captain Marvel-slash-Shazam and the other members of the Marvel Family, he's risen...

The Hulk Is Just As Dangerous Dead As He Is Alive
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers from The Avengers: War Across Time #1!One of the most popular Marvel heroes, the Hulk, has officially been proven to be just as dangerous even after death. Since his creation in 1962 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Jekyll-and-Hyde character has become a mainstay in the Marvel Universe because of his fascinating duality. His stories have entertained fans for years no matter which form he takes because of the battle between Bruce Banner's brains and the Hulk's brawn. However, it's how dangerous he is as the strongest Avenger that has most helped him maintain a strong fanbase throughout the years.

Hulk may be able to work well with his teammates in the Avengers, but he's often one bad day away from snapping and becoming a rage machine not even the Avengers can control. This was showcased in two of the Hulk's most popular stories, Planet Hulk and World War Hulk,...

Marvel Almost Traded DC an MCU Hero for a Justice League Icon
Image
The Marvel and DC Comics universes nearly traded major characters that almost resulted in She-Hulk joining the Justice League and Martian Manhunter becoming an Avenger. During the DC versus Marvel comic book crossover, there was significant talk about the story ending with a huge twist that would shake up both publishers, as it almost finished with the swap of powerful heroes. Thankfully, the deal never occurred, but it turned out to be more than just chatter and was a real discussion between Marvel and DC.

In an interview with GamesRadar from 2021, former DC publisher Paul Levitz revealed that there was a conversation about swapping Marvel and DC characters during the DC versus Marvel crossover. While admitting that talks might not have lasted more than one meeting and acknowledging the logistical difficulty of swapping heroes, the idea had some legs. Writer Ron Marz told the website that She-Hulk and Martian Manhunter deal was on the table,...

One DC Comics Writer Regrets Unmasking and Killing the Original Batman
Image
Bruce Wayne’s tragic origin regrettably repeated itself when one DC Comics writer decided to orphan another young Wayne by unmasking and killing the original Batman.

When DC Comics established its multiverse in 1961's The Flash #123, the original Golden Age iterations of the publisher's superheroes were repositioned as residents of an alternate universe. The adventures of the original Batman, and other Golden Age characters, were retroactively set on Earth-Two, while the then-current Silver Age stories were set on Earth-One. This new continuity allowed the Earth-Two Bruce Wayne who was born in 1915 to continue aging, which created interesting opportunities for new kinds of Batman stories. The Earth-Two Bruce Wayne was significantly older than his Earth-One counterpart and the writers crafted a promising future for Bruce as a character. He eventually retired as Batman, married a reformed Catwoman, had a daughter who became the Huntress, and assumed the role of Gotham City’s Police Commissioner.

‘DC’s Terrors Through Time #1’ Review
Image
Written by Various | Art by Various | Published by DC Comics

Although the 80-page giants generally have been pretty good, especially the wave of books we had celebrating various character anniversaries, DC of late have struggled a little with the anthology books. I should say it’s not just DC, but as once upon a time they were the masters of the format it is most noticeable with them. The mix of creative teams isn’t the issue either. A blend of known names and up-and-comers was always the way DC’s mystery books operated, and it served them very well. What drew me to this book the most was Paul Levitz writing Phantom Stranger (that alone is worth the entrance price), and Tom Mandrake and Kelley Jones illustrating two tales. Let’s hope the other stories can add some scary fun as well.

The know the score with these books,...

Is Young Justice Setting Up a Superboy and Mordru Battle?
Lacey Chabert, Danica McKellar, Jesse McCartney, Nolan North, Stephanie Lemelin, Khary Payton, and Denise Boutte in Young Justice (2010)
This Young Justice: Phantoms review contains spoilers.

Young Justice Season 4 Episode 9

“Ondu!” thankfully pivots Young Justice: Phantoms away from the tedium of the Tigress arc and into one starring Zatanna. This change of pace freshens up the show significantly – it’s Young Justice’s first significant exploration of the magical side of the Dcu, and it mayyyyyybe hints at some big story points moving forward.

We start with a brief introduction and history of the Lords of Chaos and Order, the primal conflict between chaos and order that sprang from the creation of a disordered universe. It’s a universal origin story that doesn’t have The Hand (the hand of the Anti-Monitor observing the Universe and thus creating it), but otherwise this is pretty well established canon from the comics. This history is interspersed with Zatanna and her new squad – Khalid Nassour, Traci 13, and Mary Bromfeld (a semi-depowered Mary...

Batman and Catwoman’s Daughter Helena Wayne Has a Long History in DC Comics
Scott Snyder
This Batman article contains spoilers.

Tom King and Clay Mann’s Batman/Catwoman kicked off its complex thread of mysteries earlier this month. In the present, the Bat and the Cat set out to search for Andrea Beaumont’s missing son, while an older Selina Kyle pays a friend a visit in the future, with the first issue concluding with the return of killer vigilante the Phantasm.

It’s hard to say just where these threads are going after just one issue, but we do know that at least one new character from Bruce and Selina’s future and DC Comics’ past is set to play a major role in this story. As revealed by King and Mann on Twitter, Helena Wayne, the daughter first teased in King and Lee Weeks’ amazing Batman Annual #2 (2017), will don the cape and cowl in the maxi-series.

The cover for Batman/Catwoman #4 features Helena in a full Batsuit,...

Unpublished Alan Moore DC Story Pitch: Twilight of the Superheroes Coming to Print
Alan Moore
DC’s new comics solicitations for November, 2020, were full of surprises, but there may not be a bigger shock than the announcement that they would be publishing Alan Moore’s pitch for Twilight of the Superheroes.

DC is releasing DC Through the ’80s: The End of Eras on December 15th. It’s a compilation of several pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths stories, including Moore and Curt Swan’s legendary “What Ever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?” Detective Comics #500, The Brave and the Bold #200, and several others. The hardcover will also include essays on this era of comics from Elliot S! Maggin, Andy Kubert, J.M. DeMatteis, and others, alongside Moore’s mega-crossover pitch.

Twilight of the Superheroes was Moore’s attempt, in 1987, to clean up what he saw as the mess that was created by Crisis. It was a mechanism to reintroduce a version of the multiverse, and an effort to...

Cbldf Executive Director Charles Brownstein Resigns Amid Harassment Accusations
Brian Michael Bendis
Charles Brownstein, the former Executive Director of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, resigned Monday night following resurfaced accounts of harassment.

Stories of Brownstein’s harassment were signal boosted by comics writer Jennifer de Guzman as comics deals with a reckoning over sexual and emotional abuse in the industry. Her amplification caused a reassessment of Brownstein’s assault of comics creator Taki Soma in 2006, and led to a number of high profile creators swearing off the organization as it became clear the Cbldf had done little to address his attacks. Among those abandoning the Cbldf were James Tynion, IV; Brian Michael Bendis; Al Ewing; Pia Guerra; Ales Kot; Lilah Sturges; and Jamal Igle.

The final straw for Brownstein may have been when Cbldf board members started jumping ship, including comics titan Frank Miller.

Here’s Miller’s tweet on the matter…

I stand with the victims of Charles Brownstein. I...

Martin Pasko, DC Comics Writer, Dies at 65
Image
Martin Pasko, a writer best known for working on DC properties in both comic books and television, died Sunday night of natural causes. He was 65.

Former DC publisher Paul Levitz, a friend of Pasko, announced the writer’s death through a Facebook post on Monday.

“The odds are you’ve read his work, credited or not, or enjoyed a comic or cartoon or TV show or even a theme park event he made better, even as he relentlessly complained about the difficulties of making it as good as it ‘should’ be,” Levitz wrote. “Marty didn’t have a genius for making anything easy (especially for him), but he had a real genius for making creative magic.”

Pasko was born Jean-Claude Rochefort in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on Aug. 4, 1954. After attending Northwestern University and New York University, he began publishing comics in 1972.

Pasko began working at DC Comics in 1973. His first Superman-related...

Green Lantern Villain Sinestro Returns!
Jim Dandy Aug 5, 2019

Mark Russell takes on Green Lantern's deadliest foe in Sinestro: Year of the Villain.

Mark Russell would seem like an odd choice to write a Sinestro comic. Before he started writing the shockingly terrific Wonder Twins in the mainstream Dcu; before the critical darlings that were Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles or The Flintstones; even before the too-beautiful-for-its-time Prez, Russell got his start in comics when Top Shelf picked up a book that grew out of his party trick, where he would sarcastically retell books of The Bible off the top of his head. He and Shannon Wheeler turned it into God Is Disappointed In You, and while it's a ways off from his new project - Sinestro: Year of the Villain #1 - it's less different than you might think.

"For me, Sinestro represents the greatest temptation in the world...the idea that we could...

DC Comics Unveils First Batman 80th Anniversary Plans
2019 marks the 80th anniversary of Batman and DC plans to celebrate the occasion in style. While many of the publisher's plans for the Dark Knight's upcoming milestone haven't been revealed, they have announced two special releases set to hit shelves next year; Detective Comics: 80 Years of Batman - The Deluxe Edition and Detective Comics # 1000. DC Comics Publishers Jim Lee and Dan Didio had this to say in a statement.

"The enduring popularity of Batman over the past 80 years speaks to the character's multi-generational appeal. We're proud to celebrate Batman's cultural impact with these special releases and look forward to a year of commemorating this milestone anniversary with fans across the globe."

First up is Detective Comics #1000. Batman first made his debut in the pages of the series in issue #27 back in 1939. This massive 96-page issue will feature a brand new, original story from writer Peter J. Tomasi and artwork by Doug Mahnke,...

Detective Comics #1000 Will Introduce A New Version Of The Arkham Knight
If you partook in the incredible celebration surrounding Action Comics #1000 earlier this year and hoped for Batman to receive similar treatment when he hits a similar milestone, well, then today’s the day we can guarantee your wish being granted.

You see, DC Comics have finally released the first details concerning Detective Comics #1000, and it looks like something none of us will want to miss. In fact, the landmark issue will introduce a new version of the Arkham Knight, thus bringing the familiar name into proper continuity.

As you may remember, the eponymous antagonist was first introduced in Rocksteady’s hit video game Batman: Arkham Knight, where he was ultimately unmasked as being Jason Todd. But considering how Jason’s well-established as the Red Hood within the DC Universe, it makes sense for someone else to be under the mask this time around.

Right now, I imagine that’ll go...
