Four have gone by since Chris Stuckmann, a movie critic and author with a channel on YouTube that has over 2 million subscribers, signed a deal with Paper Street Pictures to write and direct the mystery horror film Shelby Oaks. Three years ago, the project became the most-funded horror film project in Kickstarter history, with its crowdfunding campaign pulling in over $1 million. Filming took place in the Cleveland, Ohio area back in 2022, genre regular Mike Flanagan came on board as an executive producer last year, and Neon not only picked up the distribution rights, they also dropped more money into the budget for reshoots that included adding more “gore and violence.” Now, Shelby Oaks is finally set to reach theatres on October 3rd, and a trailer has made its way online. Chris Stuckmann’s crowd-funded “Shelby Oaks” is gearing up for its big theatrical release on October 3 — and Neon’s got a lot riding on the supernatural mystery delivering its first major Halloween play at the box office.
Earlier this summer, IndieWire reported that the YouTuber’s supernatural mystery — about a team of ghost hunters who lose one of their own — had undergone significant reshoots. In March, “Shelby Oaks” spent roughly $1 million to head back to Ohio, where they added scenes with “more blood and gore.”
When I reviewed the first cut of “Shelby Oaks” last summer at Fantasia Fest, I knocked it for Stuckmann’s poorly written final girl (Camille Sullivan) and suspense with nonsensical execution. Still, I gave it a “B-” because I admired how Stuckmann paid for it, and his love for the genre was obvious.
Additional scenes aren’t likely to fix a bad script, but there...

Two episodes in, and Syfy's latest series, Revival, is already going from strength to strength. Following a pulse-racing opening that showcased the series' gorgeous horror-noir-inspired visuals and its clever spin on the zombie sub-genre, Episode 2, "Keeping Up Appearances," cemented each of these aspects and confirmed the show as must-watch horror TV. The prime factor in the series' early success is Wynonna Earp star Melanie Scrofano, who stars as local police officer Dana Cypress.
Now, with a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score higher than both Wynonna Earp and Scrofano's cult slasher-comedy movie, Ready or Not, more will likely begin heading to Syfy to see what all the fuss is about. They will be greeted by the upcoming Episode 3, "Reality Check," which looks to be a chaotic installment ready to lean heavier into horror stylings as the mystery continues to unravel. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Revival Season 1 Episode 2 “Keeping Up Appearances.”] The town of Wausau has forever been changed on the new Syfy series Revival. Suddenly, people who died within a two-week period came back to life, for the most part, seemingly normal. (They do heal from any postmortem injuries.) The premiere ended with the shocking reveal that one of the daughters of the town’s sheriff, Wayne (David James Elliott), is a reviver. But as Em (Romy Weltman) tells her sister Dana (Melanie Scrofano), she doesn’t want their dad (also Dana’s boss!) to know. So far, Dana is keeping that from Wayne. And, in Episode 2, Wayne warns Dana about grabbing Em. He also decides he wants to lock up revivers. And given what he doesn’t know about his own daughter, TV Insider had to ask the executive producers Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce ...

Series creators Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce took on quite an interesting challenge when adapting the best-selling Image Comics series, Revival, for TV. While comic book adaptations can often be hit or miss, the duo’s love for the story and for the comic medium seeps through the screen in a series that’s creepy, freaky, and even a little bit funny.

On one miraculous day in rural Wisconsin, the recently deceased suddenly rise from their graves. But this is no zombie story as the “revived” appear and act just like they once were. YouTuber Chris Stuckmann's crowd-funded horror movieShelby Oaks has been in the works for a while. Most recently, the film finished three days of reshoots after receiving double its original budget.
Stuckmann is a popular film critic who decided he wanted to make his own horror film. The found footage-style movie received $1.39 million via a Kickstarter campaign and was acquired by Neon in July 2024. According to IndieWire, Neon provided Stuckmann with more money to add more violence and gore to Shelby Oaks. The extra cash will also allow the crew to film inside the same prison that was used in Shawshank Redemption.
"We were able to go back into the movie at a couple key points and really punch up some particularly bloody elements," Stuckmann said about the reshoots in a video shared by Paper Street Pictures' YouTube Channel. "I can't even express how unprecedented that is for an independent filmmaker.

After years of anticipation, the most-funded horror film on Kickstarter is finally headed to theaters nationwide later this year. It’s not every day that a YouTube film critic makes his dreams a reality, but that was the case for Chris Stuckmann, who wrote and directed an original horror thriller that received positive reviews during a brief festival run in 2024. Now, fans can prepare to get seriously spooked during the perfect time of the year.
As reported by IndieWire, Shelby Oaksis set to hit theaters on Oct. 3. The film is being distributed by Neon, which acquired the thriller after it screened at film festivals in 2024. The directorial debut of Chris Stuckmann was executive produced by Mike Flanagan, the horror maestro who just released his feel-good Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck. With an official release date set in stone, expect marketing to ramp up on the long-awaited project closer to the October theatrical debut.

Whenever a movie goes back into production for reshoots, there’s usually immediate skepticism, especially when we get to see the price tag. While we don’t know the exact amount behind the reshoots of Shelby Oaks – the debut from web critic-turned-filmmaker Chris Stuckmann – Neon wrote a check that allowed for more “gore and violence.”
Shelby Oaks was actually a crowd-funded endeavor, with one of the leading figures in horror, Mike Flanagan, offering extra support. Backed by a budget that initially came to $1.4 million, the film is now looking to improve on the reviews that came out of Fantasia Fest last summer.
Stuckmann himself was excited over the fact that Neon would show so much confidence in Shelby Oaks, saying, “We were able to go back into the movie at a couple key points and really punch up some particularly bloody elements. I can’t even express how unprecedented that is for an independent filmmaker.

The truth is out there and exclusive to IndieWire: Neon’s “Shelby Oaks” will open in U.S. theaters on October 3. The crowd-funded horror movie from YouTuber and film critic Chris Stuckmann finished three days of reshoots back in early March. The cast and crew were on location in Cleveland, Ohio, working on a newly designed sound stage and inside the real prison/museum from “The Shawshank Redemption.” The found footage effort was first made possible by a $1.39 million Kickstarter campaign and the support of executive producer Mike Flanagan, who’s mentored Stuckmann for years.
Neon acquired “Shelby Oaks” just days before it premiered at Fantasia Fest in Montreal last July. The studio was still riding high on “Longlegs,” its most successful movie to date, when Stuckmann’s paranormal mystery opened to mostly positive reviews; IndieWire gave it a “B-.” That version of “Shelby Oaks” screened again at Fright Fest U.

Wynonna Earp is back on the air... kind of. Melanie Scrofano, the titular star of the acclaimed supernatural western series that ended in 2021, has returned to Syfy to play a new enforcer of the law wrapped up in her own supernatural happenings in the new series, Revival. Instead of fighting the resurrected outlaws her great-great-grandfather gunned down years ago, however, she's now dealing with a murder mystery in a small Wisconsin town where the dead have risen from the Earth with their original personalities, memories, and appearances still intact. The first episode premiered on Thursday, but to get more viewers interested in the twisty new supernatural tale, SyFy has now made "Don't Tell Dad" available to watch for free on YouTube before the show gets into full swing.
Revival casts Scrofano as Dana Cypres, a local police officer and single mother who, like everyone else, is grappling with the fallout of "Revival Day.

Syfy’s latest supernatural series, Revival, certainly wowed viewers with its premiere episode, “Don’t Tell Dad,” which saw Melanie Scrofano’s Dana almost lose her sister, who then turned out to be a Reviver. Although the new series “Revival,” which debuts June 12 on Syfy, is a spooky story about the undead coming back to life, one of the scariest moments actually happened while shooting the final episode of the season. Aaron B. Koontz, the show’s co-creator, showrunner and executive producer, remembers the last night of the shoot, in which a tight schedule nearly toppled production.
“Samir Rehem, the amazing director for our second block, there was a moment where he was literally catatonic,” Koontz says. “He just stood there. I’m like, ‘Samir, what are we going to do?’ He’s like, ‘I don’t know what to do.’ I’m like, ‘Well, we got to get the crane. We gotta move over there,’ and he’s like, ‘Aaron, Aaron, not now.’ I’m about to go direct the end of the scene because I think we just broke our director because he...

Revival, Syfy’s new horror-noir-dramedy thing, is both very much like a lot of shows we’ve seen recently and not.
It is yet another 2025 series about, to paraphrase my colleague’s summary of The Better Sister, two estranged sisters simultaneously bonded and torn apart by trauma — only in this case, the circumstances of their reunion involve the dead suddenly coming back to life. Which might suggest zombie action à la The Last of Us, except these resurrected have no evident interest in eating anyone’s brains, just in returning to their old lives.
One of said sisters (Melanie Scrofano’s Dana) is a police detective with a personal investment in the case of a murdered young woman; I’m sure you can fill in your own point of comparison from any number of noir-laced shows here.
None of these tropes is getting radically reinvented here, so much as they...

The stakes are high in Syfy’s Revival, but the story’s heart lies in two sisters trying to reconnect while the world around them comes undone.
Premiering Thursday, June 12 at 10/9c, the new series opens with a supernatural event in a small Wisconsin town that disrupts life — and death — as everyone knows it.
But while strange phenomena unfold, it’s the relationship between Officer Dana Cypress (Melanie Scrofano) and her younger sister Em (Romy Weltman) that quietly carries the emotional weight.
(Courtesy of Syfy)
“Dana hasn’t left yet, but she’s planning to,” Scrofano said. “They’re divided by Em’s illness… there is an age gap between the sisters. Em’s illness made her really fragile in Dana’s mind, so she really underestimates her sister.”
The pair’s dynamic might remind fans of another sisterly duo Scrofano knows well — Wynonna and Waverly Earp.

The pain of losing loved ones is unfortunately something that we all have to experience, but what if your recently departed family and friends came back from the dead one day (without an appetite for human flesh)? Can you imagine the avalanche of emotions that would come in the wake of their return? For a small town in rural Wisconsin, that compelling (and somewhat frightening) "what if" becomes a reality in the aptly new series Revival.

The dead are coming back — but not like you’ve seen before.
Syfy’s new series Revival kicks off on Thursday, June 12 at 10/9c with a premise that’s more intimate than apocalyptic: in a small Midwestern town, 47 people suddenly return from the dead.
They’re not monsters. They’re themselves. But that’s where the mystery begins.
(Courtesy of Syfy)
Executive producers and showrunners Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce leaned into the emotional core of the story — adapted from the Image Comics series by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton — and brought their personal experiences growing up in rural towns to the screen.
“You’re completely right. It is the emotion,” Koontz said when asked what made Revival stand out.
“It was there in the comic. There was something that was embedded in what Tim and Mike had created — that was the sister story. I thought it was really wonderful.

Comic book adaptations of indie comics can hit the ground running if the tone of a comic has been fully explored. However, the adaptation process still requires a steady hand, and Syfy’s latest series, Revival, has that from the jump. Co-created by Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce, the adaptation of Tim Seeley and Mike Norton’s comic builds from an interesting foundation. Grounding the story from the point of view of a family, the undead horror-comedy is one of the best shows in years from Syfy. With plenty of heart and fun characters, Revival deserves to be a big hit for the genre network.

“When you think of zombie shows, many times that’s a show that’s dealing with death. Our story is more about life,” says Revival co-creator and showrunner Aaron B. Koontz. The new Syfy series premieres on Thursday, June 12, at 10/9c, on Syfy. (All episodes will be available to stream on Peacock one week after air.) TV Insider has an exclusive first look at a featurette in which the cast and co-creators and showrunners Koontz and Luke Boyce introduce the new world of Revival, based on the best-selling Image Comics series from Tim Seeley and Mike Norton. Syfy and Peacock have released the first teaser trailer for Revival and how this is going to be your next creepy summer binge series! The graphic novel from Image Comics debuted in 2012, written by Tim Seeley with art by Mike Norton. It's been a long journey to making it into a TV show with showrunners Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce. Koontz talked of it in 2024:
"The four-year journey to get here was tough, but Revival has been the most creatively fulfilling journey of my life. Yes, it is daunting and, at times, completely insane. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm at home in the chaos.

Almost a year after Resident Alien moved from Syfy to NBCUniversal sibling USA Network with a suspenseful Season 4 renewal, a premiere date has been set for said Season 4 and, surprisingly, it involves both the sci-fi comedy-drama’ new and old homes.
The new season of Resident Alien will debut June 6 as a simulcast on USA and Syfy. The decision to keep the show on Syfy in addition to its USA run reportedly came in the months following the Season 4 renewal. Also today, Syfy announced a June 12 premiere for its new scripted series Revival, headlined by Wynonna Earp star Melanie Scrofano. Episodes of Resident Alien and Revival — both based on comics — will be available on Peacock a week after they premiere on the linear networks.

Western horror is a criminally underutilized genre blend. The scorching sun hanging over the backdrop of the Old West can prove bleak and hostile, making this extreme environment the perfect stage for grittier horrors. This was clearly the thought process behind Aaron B. Koontz’s 2020 The Pale Door. Following brothers Jake (Devin Druid) and Duncan (Zachary Knighton), members of the outlaw Dalton gang, in the wake of a train heist, The Pale Door takes a surprising turn into supernatural horror. This pivot from a stereotypical cowboy flick into insane witchcraft is smooth and makes for a riveting watch.

The official description of the series states, “On one miraculous day in rural Wisconsin, the recently deceased suddenly rise from their graves. But this is no zombie story as the ‘revived’ appear and act just like they once were. First released by Image Comics in 2012, the horror series Revival quickly became a hit for creators Tim Seely and Mike Norton, nominated for three Harvey Awards in 2013. While it unfortunately lost out to the juggernaut that was Saga that year, the comics nevertheless became beloved by many who have long been wanting to see a live-action adaptation. Wait no longer, because production on Revival has begun, and its main cast has just been announced.
Per Variety, Revival will star Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp), Romy Weltman (Backstage), David James Elliott (Jag) and Andy McQueen (Outer Banks), all of whom will lead the original series for the SyFy network, which was created by showrunners Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce. Cameras are now rolling in New Brunswick, Canada, with eyeballs firmly fixed on a 2025 release.
