The film adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s popular graphic novel Y: The Last Man has been in development for a decade, and four months after Vulture learned that it had become a priority at New Line, we now hear that the project finally has a director. It’s Dan Trachtenberg, a first-time feature director who made the short “No Escape,” a popular fan film of the video game, Portal.Y follows the adventures of Yorick Brown, a young escape artist who discovers that he, along with his monkey, Ampersand, may be the only males left living after a plague knocks off almost everyone with a Y chromosome. In nabbing this project on the basis of a fan film, it seems that Trachtenberg beat out the director of an actual Y: The Last Man fan film made by Captain America visual effects supervisor, Christian Cardona. Hollywood has been trying to get Brian K Vaughan’s “Y: The Last Man” made for some time now, but I suspect its best chance of actually ever happening was when it had D.J. Caruso attached to direct and Shia Labeouf to star a few years back. With those two guys now gone from the project, its chances of hitting the big screen is looking less likely. It’s not like this is a known property, after all, so you need a major star (or a major director) to get it done. And if Shia and Caruso couldn’t do it when they were coming off major hits, I dunno if anyone else can. But hey, why wait for the big-screen version when you can watch a full 20-minute fanmade film of “Y: The Last Man”? While we wait for one of the best comicbook series of all time to come to TV, Christian Cardona took upon himself to give us something to look forward to.

The director and clearly, massive fan, of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s Y: The Last Man has created a 20 minute fan film based on the comic book entitled Y: The Last Man Rising, which I’ve embedded below.

Y: The Last Man is probably my favorite comic book of all time, and it would kill me to see the comicbook butchered on TV, but The Walking Dead has given die hard fans of beloved properties hope in TV adaptations. We’ll see, but this is a good consolation prize for now.

Of all the awesome graphic novel properties that have been snapped up by Hollywood in recent years, we're really surprised that the long-planned "Y: The Last Man" adaptation has never made its way to the big screen. Sure, back in March we heard the movie had nabbed some new writers, but that's pretty much back to square one for the project.

While we wait for the feature film version of "Y: The Last Man" to slowly trudge its way through the Hollywood production cycle to the big screen, some people have stepped up to make their own short based on the hit graphic novel. Writer/director Christian Cardona's vision of "Y" — called "Y: The Last Man Rising" — made its big debut earlier this month thanks to IGN (via /Film).

Since a big-budget studio adaptation of Y: The Last Man is still in limbo (New Line holds the rights, but the project has been stalled in development for years), we’ll have to make do with this impressive fan film from Christian Cardona and imagine what might be if New Line could ever get the real version off the ground. If it’s anything like this short, we hope the studio steps things up and gets this in theaters sooner rather than later. An adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's Y: The Last Man has been gestating for years now. Shia Labeouf was once attached to the project and director D.J. Caruso was going to take a stab at the film, but it never came to fruition. Just recently TV producers-turned-writers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia were hired to do a new script for the adaptation, but who knows how that's going to turn out. "The Adventures of Tintin" dominated the nominations but it was "Rango" that received the most trophies at the 10th Visual Effects Society (Ves) awards. Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Antonion Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, director Chris Miller, Marc Webb, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson presented awards. But the surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese was the highlight of the evening.

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.

There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?

The Visual Effects Society (Ves) today announced the nominees for its 10th Annual Ves Awards ceremony recognizing outstanding visual effects artistry in 23 categories of film, animation, television, commercials, special venues and video games. Nominees were chosen Saturday, January 7 by distinguished panels of Ves members who viewed submissions at the FotoKem screening facilities in Burbank and New York, FotoKem's Spy in San Francisco, and other facilities in London, Sydney, Vancouver and Wellington, Nz.

"The standard of the creative work that is being considered this year is unbelievably high across all categories," said Jeffrey A. Okun, Chair of the Visual Effects Society. "The judges faced a huge challenge because all of the work was so far above the norm. We're honored to have the opportunity to focus the spotlight on the outstanding work that has contributed to some of the highest grossing films and broadcast projects of all time."
