Louie Zakarian sculpts the faces of comedy. As the makeup department head at “Saturday Night Live,” Zakarian spends long hours and nearly sleepless nights in the hallowed halls of 30 Rock and the show’s West Side studio.
This year, he and his team earned nods for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup (for the Timothée Chalamet-hosted episode) and Outstanding Makeup for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program (for “SNL50: The Anniversary Special“). Prosthetic dog noses, superfluous AI appendages, a mimicry of Donald Trump’s neck, numerous callback characters from “SNL” history and makeup for dozens of anniversary-related guests helped bring Zakarian’s crew the cross-category recognition.
In the prosthetics realm, his team is competing against effects-heavy contenders like “The Last of Us” and “The Penguin.” This is the first time in eight years that “SNL” has muscled its way in alongside the kind of large-scale dramas that almost always dominate the category.

It's no industry secret that theatrical comedies are dying at the box office. To get genuine laughs on the big screen, you'll mostly have to settle for quippy dialogue in Marvel movies or a theatrical re-release of classics like "This is Spinal Tap." Oftentimes, comedies are dumped onto streaming services like they're disposable, and it's harder than ever to find comedy movies that are genuinely and constantly funny. But we've assembled a list of some of the best comedies of the 2020s so far.
Some of these movies got their time to shine in theaters, while others missed having a widespread release due to a variety of factors. Some will be the weirdest movies you've ever seen in your life, while others are so funny you've honestly been missing out if you haven't yet seen them. Individually, Kristen Wiig and Jonah Hill have starred in some of the most wildly popular comedies of the last 20 years. Now they're joining forces for a new feature with a premise that seems poised to take full advantage of their shared ability to make millions of people laugh.
Variety reports that Wiig is joining Hill for Cut Off, a Warner Bros. comedy he's set to direct from a script he co-wrote with Ezra Woods. Scheduled for a July 17, 2026 release date, the film revolves around the adventures of a brother and sister who are forced to fend for themselves after their wealthy parents refuse to continue supporting them. Production is scheduled to begin sometime during the fall, with Hill co-producing alongside Matt Dines and Ali Goodwin for his Strong Baby production company; on the studio side, producers include Jesse Ehrman and Zach Hamby. The project is reportedly working from a budget of $50 million.

Warner Bros. is moving ahead with Cut Off, a sibling comedy starring Kristen Wiig and Jonah Hill, with Hill directing and co-writing the script with Ezra Woods. The studio has dated the film for July 17, 2026, and plans to begin production this fall in California.
The story centers on adult heirs forced to fend for themselves after their parents sever financial support. The project is budgeted in the high-forties and received a $10 million allocation from California’s film and TV tax credit program, with Hill producing through Strong Baby alongside Matt Dines and Ali Goodwin; Warner Bros. executives Jesse Ehrman and Zach Hamby are overseeing.
The release positions Cut Off opposite Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey on the same July 17, 2026 weekend, setting up a clear example of counter-programming: a mid-budget studio comedy against an IMAX-driven epic that carries a reported $250 million price tag. The Odyssey’s date and scale have...

Straight-up comedies have struggled to find a foothold in theaters since the pandemic, but after last weekend’s encouraging “The Naked Gun” launch and this weekend’s promising “Freakier Friday” prospect, it looks like studios are ready to invest in comedy all over again.
Variety has shared that Kristen Wiig — the “SNL” alum who powered one of the ’10s most successful laughers, “Bridesmaids” — will co-star with Jonah Hill as siblings in the upcoming Warner Bros. release “Cut Off.”
The pair will play adult siblings forced to adjust to real life after their parents stop paying for them. Ezra Woods co-wrote with Hill, who will also direct. “Cut Off” will hit theaters on July 17, 2026, placing it as counter programming to “The Odyssey,” which — of course — already has sold out advance IMAX screenings for that date, 11.5 months ahead of its actual release.

I can’t imagine what it’s like living on Easy Street. Having everything handed to you sounds nice, but I’d miss the satisfaction of an honest day’s work after a while. I say that, but part of me would love it if someone else took the lion’s share of my bills and responsibilities. For the upcoming comedy Cut Off, Jonah Hill and Kristen Wiig are two people who are about to know what it feels like to have everything taken away. Today, we’re hearing that Kristen Wiig will star opposite Jonah Hill in the film shooting this fall, set for a global release on July 17, 2026.
Cut Off‘s release date is bold, considering it’s the same weekend that hosts Christopher Nolan’s next epic, The Odyssey. That’s some stiff competition, even if The Cut Off is a different genre of filmmaking. Ezra Woods is co-writing The Cut Off,...

Even after a successful premiere that led to their documentary becoming not only one of the best reviewed films out of Sundance 2024, but one of the biggest acquisitions out of the festival, “Will & Harper” director Josh Greenbaum and subject Harper Steele were not aware of just how long the journey to becoming an Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special Emmy nominee would take them.
“I had no idea we were even eligible for an Emmy, quite honestly,” said Steele to IndieWire over Zoom. “Depending on the mood I’m in, it was either a cherry on the top or a sad surprise,” she joked, thinking back on the prospect of a second year of awards campaigning.

The outlook for big screen comedies keeps getting brighter, as beloved “Saturday Night Live” alum Kristen Wiig is joining Jonah Hill in his new Warner Bros. feature “Cut Off.”

It's always exciting to watch Saturday Night Live's best duos reunite onscreen any chance they get. We love watching Amy Poehler and Tina Fey doing anything together (especially with Maya Rudolph!), Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig riffing in some hilarious bit, and Poehler cracking in-jokes with her pal and Weekend Update partner Seth Meyers. But that's just the tip of the iceberg of amazing SNL duos.
Maybe you missed the exciting news, but we're about to be treated to a Saturday Night Live reunion that's both a long time coming and one we didn't see coming. Two of the most iconic SNL stars, who starred in a film based on one of their most popular sketches, are joining forces once again after over a decade in an upcoming Netflix original comedy series. Picture two films in front of you. One is a three-hour drama, an epic about an important issue acclaimed by critics, a piece of cinematic homework you have to see lest a Letterboxd gatekeeper sneers at you. The other is maybe 90 minutes and is really, really funny, critical consensus be damned. I know which one I'm picking.
Like many others, I am a huge fan of comedy movies. It's the art of finding visceral, uncontrollable catharsis through this maddening existence we call "being alive." It requires all the facets of dramatic storytelling with the added task of poking fun at the "normal" elements of dramatic storytelling. It's so hard, and when it's pulled off well, there's nothing like it. And there are many great comedy films to check out on streaming services, including, but not limited to Hulu.
So the next time you're scrolling through Hulu looking for a flick to watch,...

It's so hard, and when it's pulled off well, there's nothing like it. And there are many great comedy films to check out on streaming services, including, but not limited to Hulu.
So the next time you're scrolling through Hulu looking for a flick to watch,...

It has been a lifelong dream of mine to once enter a cafe, sit down, and just start solving daily puzzles impromptu to assert dominance. And while there is a long way to go before this dream is ever fulfilled, thanks to my social anxiety, maybe you can try out my favorite set of daily puzzles of them all, Actorle.
Actorle.com blends Hollywood with traditional puzzles so well that I find it to be deeply satisfying to flex those film knowledge muscles after figuring out all the solutions. August 1’s lineup brought its fair share of head-scratchers, so here’s a full breakdown of all the answers.

"Reno 911!" was a satirical take on "Cops," the popular reality docuseries following real cops in the line of duty, making arrests and chasing "bad guys." Airing originally on Comedy Central from 2003 to 2009, "Reno 911!" took the bumbling cop trope to its logical conclusion, portraying the officers of the fictional Reno Sheriff's Department as incompetent stooges. The show existed within the peak of crude, offensive comedy that dominated the 2000s; it featured politically incorrect skits that dealt with race, gender, sex work, and mental illness. Though much of the depiction of mental illness did not age well, a majority of the comedy is strangely still funny. The comedy of "Reno" still elicits chuckles by today's standards due to society's evolved perception of police. After about 15 years of police brutality and misconduct cases, it feels nice to laugh at ineffective or downright problematic police work in a low-stakes way via the cast's antics.

Fans might get another Wonder Womanmovie in the near future. The news comes by way of industry insiders close to the studio.
Sources told Variety that Warner Bros. Discovery is "fast-tracking a Wonder Woman movie. And the studio is thrilled with Matt Reeves' just-submitted screenplay draft for the sequel to The Batman." And although the studio is interested in a sequel with Superman stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, an announcement will likely not happen any time soon. Representatives for the studio have not commented on these reports.
The last time Diana Prince was seen in her own feature film was in writer-director Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 1984. Released in 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 marked the second Wonder Woman film to star Gal Gadot, and dropped viewers into the middle of the 1980s for a period-appropriate superhero story. The film starred an ensemble cast, including returning star Chris Pine as Steve Trevor.

Netflix viewers have chosen their favorite movie of 2025, and it’s not a new original film or a serious drama.
According to Nielsen, the most-watched movie this year is Despicable Me 4. This family-friendly animated film has beaten everything else on the platform so far.

Beyoncé is facing some particularly familiar competition for an Emmy this year: her own husband.
As the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday, both Queen Bey and Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) were listed as nominees in the outstanding variety special (live) category; Beyoncé for her Beyoncé Bowl halftime show for the NFL’s Christmas Day game on Netflix, and Jay as one of the executive producers for Kendrick Lamar’s Apple Music Super Bowl Lix Halftime Show.
It’s hard to track how many times a husband and wife have ever competed against one another in the same Emmy category in the past, though it’s certainly not a common occurrence.
Both Beyoncé and Lamar’s halftime shows were critically lauded and groundbreaking. Beyoncé performed the first-ever Christmas Day NFL halftime show, while Lamar broke records for the most-viewed Super Bowl halftime show of all time with over 133 million viewers.

A father-daughter composing team was nominated, Hans Zimmer could win his first Emmy, and a music supervisor was nominated for three different shows — just some of the surprises among nominations for the 2024-2025 Emmys unveiled Tuesday morning by the Television Academy.

Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie have collaborated on multiple projects, and most of them have been widely successful. Their projects together grossed almost $300 million at the box office across five films, but one particular project stands out as an absolute smash hit: Wrath of Man.
The gritty action film marked their fourth collaboration together after their debut project, 1998's Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. The film was a massive commercial and critical success, and that has also translated into streaming success, with the action film being a major hit on multiple streaming platforms. However, although it recently rose on the charts on Hulu after its recent release, it was just dethroned by Judd Apatow's Bridesmaids, per FlixPatrol.
Wrath of Man debuted on Hulu on Jul. 1, after previously experiencing success on Prime Video. Not long after its debut, Wrath of Man topped the charts on the streaming platform, continuing its worldwide success.

Scroll long enough on the internet, and the odds are good you may see Arby’s ads starring Cedric the Entertainer from the Original Kings of Comedy and Black-ish star Anthony Anderson. They’re part of a long tradition of comedians shilling for fast-food chains. Some were championing hot wings or pizza before they hit it big, like Steve Carell. Others, like Kristen Wiig, entered the game after becoming a superstar. Then there’s Jason Alexander, who did it both before and after — proving there’s no wrong way to make a quick buck off a cheap burger.
Here are 10 other examples of comedians doing fast-food commercials, so we can see how they measure up against the new Arby’s campaign with Cedric and Anderson…
1 Jason Alexander for McDonald’s
A few years before he played George Costanza on Seinfeld, Alexander was his theater-kid self in a McDonald’s ad for the McD.

Apple TV+’s sci-fi shows like Foundation and Severance are famous for their unrelenting plot twists and complex characters. However, the comedies of the streamer are not something to sneer at as well, especially when they’re led by heavyweights like Ted Lasso. But not many want to invest in a multi-season long comedy. After all, sometimes a short and sweet season is all one needs to get a few laughs before moving on.
Thankfully, Apple TV+ is a treasure trove of one-season laughter buckets that deliver a satisfying and funny story in a few episodes. So, if you are looking to cleanse your palate after heavy dramas with a satire on fame or perhaps with quirky workplace shenanigans, then this is the right place.

Nearly a decade ago, when the adult-animated comedy flick Sausage Party jumped off the shelves and into cinemas, it’s unclear whether the minds behind it had any idea of just how popular it would become. While Seth Rogen was gunning for a feature-length sequel for years, he eventually got the next best thing — an episodic series. Now, heading into its sophomore installment, today marks the debut of the long-awaited trailer for Sausage Party: Foodtopia Season 2. With favorites like Rogen, Michael Cera, Edward Norton, and Will Forte returning to voice their characters Frank, Barry, Sammy Bagel Jr., and Jack, respectively, the next fresh batch of piping-hot episodes will also feature plenty of new celebrity voices as the boys strike out on their latest adventure.
Things aren’t looking so great for Frank at the beginning of today’s trailer. He’s still (understandably) grieving the tragic loss of his beloved...

A few weeks ago, we launched a contest inviting readers to submit personal essays about what’s gone wrong with the movie business—and how it might win back the audiences that seem to have largely abandoned it. We received many excellent entries, but five stood out as the best. We’ll be publishing one each day this week.

As a cinephile, filmmaker, and instructor at the Toronto Film School, I want a healthy industry. The thought of studios and the theatrical experience vanishing is upsetting. We’ve already lost the era of video stores and the thriving home video market that once supported a wealth of original, mid-budget films. A strong Hollywood is crucial—not just for the industry itself, but also for independent filmmakers who rely on its opportunities in addition to passion projects. I want to see audiences return to movie theaters,...

It’s hard to remember now, but movies used to be funny. And not just funny as a means to an end, but funny as an end unto itself. Like, people would pay money to go see something explicitly because it promised to make them laugh, which is wild to imagine now that jokes are basically just something that Hollywood uses to hide the fact that it’s given up on making comedies. What used to be a proud and reliable genre has since been reduced to an omnipresent tone — a tone so...
