Louie Zakarian sculpts the faces of comedy. As the makeup department head at “Saturday Night Live,” Zakarian spends long hours and nearly sleepless nights in the hallowed halls of 30 Rock and the show’s West Side studio.

This year, he and his team earned nods for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup (for the Timothée Chalamet-hosted episode) and Outstanding Makeup for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program (for “SNL50: The Anniversary Special“). Prosthetic dog noses, superfluous AI appendages, a mimicry of Donald Trump’s neck, numerous callback characters from “SNL” history and makeup for dozens of anniversary-related guests helped bring Zakarian’s crew the cross-category recognition.

In the prosthetics realm, his team is competing against effects-heavy contenders like “The Last of Us” and “The Penguin.” This is the first time in eight years that “SNL” has muscled its way in alongside the kind of large-scale dramas that almost always dominate the category.

Exclusive: Harper Steele, who co-stars with Will Ferrell in the Emmy-nominated documentary Will & Harper, will receive an official proclamation from the city of West Hollywood honoring “her advocacy and continued efforts to uplift the transgender community.”

The Netflix film directed by Josh Greenbaum follows Steele and Ferrell as they embark on a road trip across America to renew their friendship after Steele reveals her gender transition. They initially met on Saturday Night Live, where Steele became head writer and Ferrell broke out as a tremendous comedic performer. On Friday (August 8), it was announced that the 51-year-old Emmy-nominated actress will be starring opposite the 41-year-old Oscar-nominated actor in the upcoming comedy Cut Off.

In the movie, Kristen and Jonah will reportedly “play wealthy siblings whose parents turn off the money faucet and force their adult kids to support themselves,” according to Variety.

Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang’s Las Culturistas Culture Awards made their splashy debut on Bravo, honoring Kenan Thompson and Allison Janney with special trophies.

The award show that celebrates culture honored the SNL star with the Titan of Culture award, while Janney was presented with the Lifetime of Culture award.

Dazed and Confused is a coming-of-age comedy film written and directed by Richard Linklater. The 1993 film is set in the 1970s in Austin, Texas, and it revolves around a group of teenagers on their last day of high school as they try to attend a party at the local pool.

"Reno 911!" was a satirical take on "Cops," the popular reality docuseries following real cops in the line of duty, making arrests and chasing "bad guys." Airing originally on Comedy Central from 2003 to 2009, "Reno 911!" took the bumbling cop trope to its logical conclusion, portraying the officers of the fictional Reno Sheriff's Department as incompetent stooges. The show existed within the peak of crude, offensive comedy that dominated the 2000s; it featured politically incorrect skits that dealt with race, gender, sex work, and mental illness. Though much of the depiction of mental illness did not age well, a majority of the comedy is strangely still funny. The comedy of "Reno" still elicits chuckles by today's standards due to society's evolved perception of police. After about 15 years of police brutality and misconduct cases, it feels nice to laugh at ineffective or downright problematic police work in a low-stakes way via the cast's antics.

Fans might get another Wonder Womanmovie in the near future. The news comes by way of industry insiders close to the studio.

Sources told Variety that Warner Bros. Discovery is "fast-tracking a Wonder Woman movie. And the studio is thrilled with Matt Reeves' just-submitted screenplay draft for the sequel to The Batman." And although the studio is interested in a sequel with Superman stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, an announcement will likely not happen any time soon. Representatives for the studio have not commented on these reports.

The last time Diana Prince was seen in her own feature film was in writer-director Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 1984. Released in 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 marked the second Wonder Woman film to star Gal Gadot, and dropped viewers into the middle of the 1980s for a period-appropriate superhero story. The film starred an ensemble cast, including returning star Chris Pine as Steve Trevor.

According to the latest numbers from Nielsen, the film that grabbed the attention of Netflix viewers this year wasn’t a new original movie or a serious drama. Instead, it was a family-friendly animated sequel: Despicable Me 4.

Despite the many popular films released this year, including the return of Wallace & Gromit in Vengeance Most Fowl and the upcoming Happy Gilmore 2, it’s the fourth film in the Despicable Me series that topped the streaming charts. Released in 2024, Despicable Me 4 continues the adventures of Gru and his chaotic Minions.

Beyoncé is facing some particularly familiar competition for an Emmy this year: her own husband.

As the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday, both Queen Bey and Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) were listed as nominees in the outstanding variety special (live) category; Beyoncé for her Beyoncé Bowl halftime show for the NFL’s Christmas Day game on Netflix, and Jay as one of the executive producers for Kendrick Lamar’s Apple Music Super Bowl Lix Halftime Show.

It’s hard to track how many times a husband and wife have ever competed against one another in the same Emmy category in the past, though it’s certainly not a common occurrence.

Both Beyoncé and Lamar’s halftime shows were critically lauded and groundbreaking. Beyoncé performed the first-ever Christmas Day NFL halftime show, while Lamar broke records for the most-viewed Super Bowl halftime show of all time with over 133 million viewers.

Will & Harper and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story missed out on Oscar nominations, but they got their due this morning from Television Academy voters.

Saturday Night Live has just scored its most Emmy nominations ever, with a couple of caveats.

The NBC show and its various spinoffs around its 50th anniversary landed 31 nominations. Its previous best ever haul was in 2017 with 22 nominations.

This included seven for Saturday Night Live’s 50th including Bowen Yang in Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, as well as 12 nominations for SNL50: The Anniversary Special and six for SNL50: The Anniversary Special. It also scored two for Questlove’s Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music and three for SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night Live as well as one for an immersive special.

It will go head-to-head, once again, against Last Week Tonight with John Oliver in the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category, which has its own special voting rules given the number of nominees.

Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie have collaborated on multiple projects, and most of them have been widely successful. Their projects together grossed almost $300 million at the box office across five films, but one particular project stands out as an absolute smash hit: Wrath of Man.

The gritty action film marked their fourth collaboration together after their debut project, 1998's Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Schitt’s Creek ran for six seasons from 2015 to 2020. The show was a huge hit with both fans and critics. The sixth and final season made Emmys history in 2020 when it became the first comedy or drama to sweep the four acting categories. Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy won in the Outstanding Leads categories while Dan and Annie Murphy won in the Supporting categories.
