In recent memory, few films have depicted grief as distressingly as Keisuke Yoshida‘s “Missing.” Married couple Saori and Yutaka desperately search for their missing daughter, Miu. As weeks turn into months, things become growingly hopeless, not helped by the media frenzy surrounding this child’s disappearance that prompts the spread of harmful rumors. Even when a local broadcasting station, primarily represented by Sunada, becomes involved in shedding light on the case, its purpose is revealed as self-serving, aimed at attracting viewers.
“Missing” critiques the media sensationalism surrounding missing person cases while showing the emotional and mental toll it takes on a family grieving for their loved one’s return. These elements culminate in arguably the film’s most disturbing and heartbreaking scene. While being interviewed, Saori receives an anonymous phone call from someone claiming to have found Miu and that she’s now in custody at the local police station.

Godzilla Minus One became a huge hit outside its native Japan, when it was released in 2023. Now, Toho Studios are officially moving forward with a sequel.
Per Bloomberg Japan, Toho Studios has dedicated $1.2 billion to a new globalization effort set to take place across the next three years. This move comes in response to what Toho sees as a growing demand for Japanese films and series across numerous international markets. Among the confirmed projects slated to be a part of this effort is a direct follow-up to the Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One.
Toho will also be launching their own subscription service, Toho-one, in the coming years, which will give members exclusive access to various films, plays, digital games, and other merchandise and tie-in materials. Toho reportedly aims to increase its overseas sales ratio from 10% to 30% by 2032, which will mark the company's 100th anniversary.

Since the 1950s, science fiction films have given audiences some of the greatest works of cinema in history, from Ridley Scott's Alien to Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. As with any genre, the direction of its films can be varied, with some remaining untouched standalone projects, some continuing on as franchises while others are remade for later generations. In the case of remakes, science fiction has some of the best films in cinema.
Science fiction remakes can be a mixed bag, among both critics and audiences, with some surpassing expectations while others fall short of being even a pale imitation of the originals. That being said, some remakes stand as a testament to how classic stories from a more limited period in film can be turned into modern masterpieces through superior effects, visionary writers and directors, and stunning cinematography.

Nearly 70 years since Godzilla first appeared on-screen, the king of the monsters has headlined almost 40 feature films along with a few TV shows. Initially conceived as a metaphor for nuclear weapons, the atomic dinosaur has since battled numerous monsters on-screen, something that has driven Warner Bros’ recent adaptations while they build a Monsterverse. A different approach has been taken by writer/director Takashi Yamazaki, taking the icon back to its post-war roots for an outstanding work that is among the franchise’s best.

Since premiering at Cannes earlier this year, Yōko Kuno and Nobuhiro Yamashita’s “Ghost Cat Anzu” has often been likened to Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away,” and it’s easy to appreciate why. For one thing, anime films begin with a young girl — in this case, a purple-haired 11-year-old named Karin — becoming separated from their parents at a pivotal moment in their lives, only to wander into a wild (but pointedly matter-of-fact) fantasy world full of spirits who see her as something between a novelty and a nuisance.
In “Ghost Cat Anzu,” however, that world is still very much our own, and the heroine’s coming-of-age isn’t contingent upon finding her way back from the underworld so much as it’s contingent upon her finding some beauty in the strangeness of our brief time above ground. “Ghost Cat Anzu” may be much sillier and less substantial than “Spirited Away,...

Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki is responsible for one of the most successful modern iterations of the iconic kaiju. Recently, he revealed that he met Marvel head honcho Keving Feige, who had nothing but good things to say about the film and future Godzilla projects.
Per VirtualGorilla, the director made an appearance on a panel at the Tokyo International Film Festival to celebrate Godzillas 70th anniversary. Yamazaki was discussing the reception of Godzilla Minus One overseas, when he mentioned an interaction with the president of Marvel, presumably Kevin Feige. "The president of Marvel told me, 'Wadatsumi!'" Wadatsumi, of course, was the codename for the operation to take out Godzilla. Yamazaki continued, "He told me, 'We're all having meetings every day to see if we can make it happen like that.' I think it's just lip service."

Godzilla is stomping its way back to the big screen.
A new “Godzilla” movie, from the director of last year’s Oscar-winning Japanese film “Godzilla Minus One,” has been officially greenlit. Toho, the Japanese entertainment company and creator of Godzilla, made the announcement on Friday.
Takashi Yamazaki, who wrote and directed the surprise hit “Godzilla Minus One,” will return for the new film. He’s once again handling the VFX, after winning the Academy Award for best visual effects in 2023.
“Godzilla Minus One” was Toho 33rd “Godzilla” movie and the 37th to include the famous monster. The Japanese film is unrelated to Hollywood’s recent portrayals of Godzilla in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Monsterverse, which includes King Kong. Set in Japan after World War II, “Godzilla Minus One” starred Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot who survives an almost fatal encounter with Godzilla and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

"There's no way to stop it." The big radioactive lizard is back! Again! Japan's Toho is planning another 2024 re-release of this beloved, Oscar-winning, monster movie mega-hit Godzilla: Minus One. It doesn’t happen often that a long feature animation polarises film critics to such an extent as Yoko Kuno & Nobuhiro Yamashita‘s “Ghost Cat Anzu” did after its world premiere in the Directors Fortnight section of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Its animation style was called anything from bleak or ugly to unique & beautiful and the plotline was criticized for being undercooked, and even all over the place. But the film continues to travel the world regardless. Its second significant station was at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival, followed by the beloved genre Ff Fantasia, where it won the Audience Award Gold for Best Animated Feature.

Japanese original series Like a Dragon: Yakuza is here, and this is an especially exciting time for those of you who are familiar with the Sega video game that inspired the Prime Video show. Though if there's one thing I've learned from these projects that are adaptations of games, you don't have to be familiar with the gaming part of it to enjoy the story. And this one is no different!
Like a Dragon: Yakuza premiered Thursday, Oct. 24, 2024 on Prime Video. Though you may have noticed that there's only three episodes available to stream. So what's the deal here? Is the season only three episodes? Is there a season 2? Streamers can be funny sometimes with their release schedules and how long a season is. We've got all the answers for you!

Like a Dragon: Yakuza is an upcoming Prime Video series based on the popular video game franchise, and the cast is full of incredible talent. Godzilla Minus One is one of the best modern iterations of the beloved franchise, and wowed audiences upon its release in 2023. Now, in the midst of the franchises 70th anniversary celebration, it is being re-released with never-before-seen bonus content.
Per AMC, Takashi Yamazakis Academy Award-winning film is making its way back to AMC theaters starting on Nov. 1, 2024, with 13 extra minutes of content. The films return to the big screen is part of the Godzilla franchises 70th anniversary celebrations. In the fall of 1954, Ishir Hondas original film premiered, creating a cultural phenomenon that has lasted throughout generations. The franchise has been reinvented multiple times, and it has transcended cultural boundaries. Still, Godzilla Minus One feels like a particularly good homage to the original, having risen to become the best-selling Japanese Godzilla film of all time.

In a game seemingly years in the making, at the Ryu Ga Gotoku Summit tonight in Tokyo, the Like a Dragon series announced its next game – Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii , a spin-off of the eighth mainline entry in the series, this year's Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth . As noted in the title, the series takes to the seas with Goro Majima returning and becoming the captain of a pirate ship. Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii - Announcement Trailer Much like Majima’s last stint as a playable character, Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is an action-adventure game much like the classic Yakuza games rather than the modern Like a Dragon games. Because of this, Maijima will have two fighting styles, the classic Mad Dog style, which brings back many of his classic moves, and the Sea Dog style, where he sports two guns and a pirate fit.

Sea monster movies tap into the fear of the unknown depths, offering a mix of horror and entertainment that resonates with audiences. Films like "The Shape of Water" and "Godzilla" bring sea monsters to life with emotional stories that elevate the genre to new heights. From classic creature features to modern horrors, sea monster movies continue to captivate and terrify viewers with their imaginative tales.
As much as the ocean is a popular tourist destination, the best sea monster movies have caused anxiety about going into unfamiliar waters. Just as the vastness of space has given way to countless fictional stories about possible terrors up there, the unknown depths of the world's oceans offer tales of aquatic mystery. Though the topic of sea monsters has given the world a seemingly endless amount of schlock, there have been several cinematic riffs on the formula, mostly in the horror genre, but not always.

Just a couple days after we learned that Godzilla Minus One is headed to 4K & Blu-ray here in the United States, Netflix has announced that the black & white version is streaming soon.
Godzilla Minus One / Minus Color will be available on Netflix beginning August 1!
The full-color version of Godzilla Minus One is also currently streaming on Netflix.

Toho’s Godzilla Minus One, written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, sees an already devastated post-World War II Japan facing a new threat in the form of Godzilla.
Yamazaki previews the black & white version of the film, “Rather than just making it monochrome, it is a cut by cut. I had them make adjustments while making full use of various mattes, as if they were creating a new movie.

Form and content align in the uniquely conceived and delightfully offbeat supernatural adventure “Ghost Cat Anzu.” For a movie about a reality where mortals and otherworldly spirits coexist on the same plane, the filmmakers decided to compound the flesh-and-bone realism of live action cinema and animation’s fantastical qualities. While the plot takes some jarring turns, its impish tone stays consistent throughout, making for a wildly enjoyable (if a bit perplexing) Japanese animated effort on its own wavelength.

Keisuke Yoshida delivers an unforgettable tearjerker with his latest film, “Missing.” This movie earns emotional resonation from viewers without feeling like hollow, melodramatic manipulation trying to cover up a flawed script. Similar to what he did in “Intolerance,” Yoshida weaves together a tragic story of psychological turmoil surrounding a parent's worst nightmare while critiquing media coverage that often circulates those sad circumstances.

When Shaun of the Dead star Simon Pegg first showed up on our screens back in the day, he earned a lot of fans through the fact that he was a celebrity-on-the-rise who had “geeky” interests and embraced “geek culture.” There’s a quote from him bouncing around where he said, “Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating.” He even titled his memoir Nerd Do Well… But last year, he distanced himself from his past self, writing off nostalgia as a neurological disorder and telling The Guardian, “I’ve aged out of a lot of what people assume I’m about.

Dead fish in Godzilla Minus One may not just be victims of Godzilla's radiation, but also sly hints about his defeat. Godzilla's power of contamination sets him apart in Minus One, with radiation poisoning and quarantine measures in play. The dead fish in Godzilla Minus One were not all killed by radiation, but water pressure, subtly foreshadowing Godzilla's defeat.

Because the film was released without a previous announcement, and as it's still new to the streamer, it's possible that Godzilla Minus One will climb even higher on that list in the days to come. Ghost Cat Anzu is an intriguing conceptualization for an animated film, existing in a realm similar to Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away yet also standing as its antithesis.
This French-Japanese co-production from Miyu Productions and Shin-Ei Animation based on the manga by Takashi Imashiro is one of the most eccentric pieces of animation I’ve encountered in a long time — in both good and bad ways. It’s good because of the innovative techniques and methods employed by directors Yôko Kuno and Nobuhiro Yamashita, who take bold experimental leaps. However, it’s also bad because Shinji Imaoka’s script meanders for nearly an hour before reaching the film’s true core, demanding a lot of patience from the viewer without providing much substance in return.
The story begins with Karin (voiced by Noa Goto) and her father Tetsuya (Munetaka Aoki) arriving at the Sousei-Ji temple, where her widowed grandfather resides.
