Halle Berry, Payal Kapadia, Alba Rohrwacher, Leïla Slimani, Dieudo Hamadi, Hong Sangsoo, Carlos Reygadas and Jeremy Strong have been announced as members of the Cannes Film Festival’s main Competition jury for its 78th edition running from May 13 to May 24.

They join previously announced Jury President Juliet Binoche. Together, they will award the Palme d’Or to one of the 21 films in the main Competition, as well as the Grand Prix, Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Actor awards.

U.S. Actress and filmmaker Berry was the first African-American woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Marc Forster’s Monster’s Ball (2002).

A whopping 18 former queens, the most in the franchise's herstory, will return to take part in the inaugural tournament-style installment over 12 episodes. Dubbed the "Tournament of All Stars," the contestants will be divided into three groups of six, each competing in their own bracket across three episodes. At the end of each bracket, the top three all stars with the highest point totals will advance to the semifinals where they’ll go head-to-head with the other two groups' top queens. After two episodes of semifinals, the tournament will then culminate in an epic "Lip Sync Smackdown for the Crown" finale episode. The solo winner will take home a grand prize of $200,000 and earn a place in the coveted Drag Race Hall of Fame.

What we, the audience, don't know, and what Nolan and Samuel don't know, is whether something is genuinely lurking just beyond the plane of the visible or if Momma is making it up. Per Momma, Evil has overtaken the world, and the cabin serves...

If read in order, the subtitles of the first six theatrically released "Resident Evil" movies almost ... almost ... spell out a "Divine Comedy"-like story arc. The first film is, naturally, merely called "Resident Evil" (2002), and it's about the release of a deadly, corporate-owned virus that turns the citizens of the world into zombies, creatures, or merely dead corpses. The film's sequel is subtitled "Apocalypse" (2004), implying that the virus escaped containment and infected the Earth. The third film is called "Extinction," implying that the virus did its job and humanity has become extinct. The arc is pretty clear. 

What comes after extinction? Well, the fourth film is called "Afterlife" (2010), following the now-dead humanity into Elysium. How apropos. Sadly, the fifth film in the series is not called "Resurrection" or "Reincarnation," but "Retribution" (2012), kind of breaking the spiritual cycle. Perhaps with "Retribution," humanity has become a gaggle of vengeful ghosts? Or perhaps not.

While Never Let Go relies heavily on its big twist, I guessed where the horror movies story was heading a month before I even saw it. Horror movie trailers are a mixed blessing. Some, like NEONs viral marketing campaign for Longlegs, can be as unsettling and thrilling as a great horror movie. Others, like the trailers for Alien: Romulus, Speak No Evil, and many more of 2024s biggest genre movies, give away too much plot and leave viewers with no reason to seek out the movie itself. Writers Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby bind a family to their homestead in the most literal representation of "never letting go," exploring how living with our demons versus confronting them head-on can lead to dire repercussions. Themes are easily identifiable, and Aja's grotesque touches elevate the stakes, but satisfaction is missing from finale climaxes. The existential questions Coughlin and Grassby's story asks are engaging and tough, but the film's blatant responses hit you over the head one too many times.

Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man) finds herself embarking on a scary new beauty treatment in Shell, the upcoming body horror dark comedy from director Max Minghella.

Although the upcoming Halle Berry vehicle Never Let Go looks promising, the post-apocalyptic horror movie also seems like it might revisit a 21-year-old slasher movies terrible twist. Broadly speaking, 2003s Haute Tension was a pretty perfect calling card for French horror director Alexandre Aja. Within three years of the French indie horror movies release, Aja was directing a big-budget remake of Wes Cravens The Hills Have Eyes. 2009s Piranha 3D followed, as well as 2013s fantasy horror Horns. However, while Alexandre Ajas horror movies were mostly financial successes, it is important to note Haute Tensions limitations.

The twist ending of Haute Tension never sat right with critics, as many reviewers felt that its outlandish revelations undid a lot of the movies effective tension and suspense. Since then, Aja has consistently struggled to win over critics, with 2007s P2, Horns, and 2016s The 9th of Louis Drax all earning less than 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Alexandre Aja, the director of horror gems like Crawl, is back for another stab at the genre, and this time, he has a Hollywood legend in the lead. Halle Berry stars in Never Let Go, Aja's attempt to tackle the folk horror genre, which has the production backup of Deadpool & Wolverine's Shawn Levy. The film is based on a script by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, who were working alongside Mark Romanek at first but who ultimately left the project.

Having captured the claustrophobia of Covid with *ahem* breathless 2021 chiller Oxygen, Alexandre Aja — whether intentionally or not — iooks set to head into agoraphobic horror territory with his follow-up Never Let Go, a film in which Oscar winner Halle Berry and her kids literally bind themselves together with rope to face the evils that lay beyond their own doorstep. The upcoming Lionsgate horror film follows a mother (Berry) and her fraternal twin sons (Daggs and Jenkins) who have been tormented by an evil spirit for years and are convinced to never let go of their family’s protective bond. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, their connection is severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival.
