Haunt Season Review: Chills and Chuckles in the Haunted House
Image
Haunt Season, directed by Jake Jarvi, is a new entry in the slasher genre, arriving just in time for Halloween on October 4. This independent film masterfully combines aspects of horror and dark comedy, all set against the backdrop of the Realm of Terror, a real haunted house attraction.

This film’s exploration of the lives of haunted house performers is particularly interesting, as it provides a view into a subculture frequently disregarded in popular filmmaking.

Haunt Season resonates with modern fears about identity and ambition as we enter the season of spooks and thrills, representing a generation struggling with performance expectations—both on and off-screen.

The film’s timing is great, arriving in theaters as fans seek the perfect balance of chills and laughs during the Halloween season. It’s more than just a horror film; it’s a statement on the blurred lines between reality and performance, making it...

‘Haunt Season’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Ana Dragovich, Stephen Kristof, Sarah Elizabeth, Brent Bentley, Craig Benzine, Adam Hinkle, Terry Holt, Samuel James Howard, Janet Jurado | Written and Directed by Jake Jarvi

Haunt Season is the latest in a long line of scary attractions turned into real houses of horror, films like Haunt and Teddy Told Me To. Of course, you can go even further back, before haunted houses were popular, to films like Tourist Trap, the original House of Wax, all the way back to Mystery in the Wax Museum from 1933. It offers a great setting for films, with plenty of opportunity for jump scares and misdirecting the viewer, which keeps attracting filmmakers. It also means that it gets harder and harder to stand out from all the other similar films.

When Taylor doesn’t show up for her shift at the local haunted house, everyone simply assumes she flaked out and ghosted them. Having seen the prologue,...

The Overlooked Horror Subgenre That's Absolutely Perfect For Halloween
Image
Are you shocked to learn the author of /Film's three Halloween Horror Nights articles this year is a haunted attraction addict? Invite me to your Halloween mazes, hayrides, docked ocean liners, and Shaqtoberfests. I crave haunt season entertainment. Even better, I crave "Haunt Season Horror" movies. Is that trademarked? Can I coin that terminology?

Haunt Season Horror titles must take place in a Horror Nights-like maze or immersive experience, turning seasonal amusements into slaughterhouse backdrops. Marquee examples would be "Hell Fest," your corporate-branded Six Flags Fright Fest take, or "The Houses October Built," which ventures into the less moderated realm of do-it-yourself haunts. These films prey upon the rational fears of patrons who attend these pop-up "Scarehouses," stripping away the safety of regulated horror experiences. What happens when a killer infiltrates a place where commercial terror is purchased at a premium? It's the ultimate Halloween treat.

Unfortunately, there's a shallow...

House of Spoils Review: Witches, Food, and Toxic Behavior Make for an Unsatisfying Meal
Image
Witches have gotten a bad rap. Portrayed alternately as conniving tricksters, bearers of bad omens, casters of curses, and perpetrators of evil, these herbal and medicinal craft practitioners have been given the decidedly short end of the stick. House of Spoils, from writing-directing duo Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy, makes a noble attempt to reframe neopagan practices and their proponents as much more than cackling antagonists. Inherent to witchcraft is a connection to the natural world, a distinction that this present film seeks to elucidate, which makes it a far more intriguing affair than the typical archetype-trundling trifle.

We begin with a flurry of mysterious images: hands mashing a cerise concoction of ambiguous ingredients, pages of a manuscript containing humanoid figures sprouting leaves from their heads. For those who don't particularly care for codicology, the mandrake, and its artistic anthropomorphization are intrinsic to witchcraft, the personification of a plant...

Haunt Season Is a Slasher Film With an Identity Crisis
Image
When people go through haunted house attractions during the Halloween season, many of them don't who the person is behind the fake gore and zombie makeup. The seasonal actor disappears behind the blood-curdling screams and smoke machine to create a visceral near-death experience that pumps out adrenaline. In Haunt Season, director and writer Jake Jarvi peels back the make-up to shine a light on haunted house actors in an actual death experience.

Haunt Season is a love letter to the actors struggling to make their big break in the entertainment industry, and provides a realistically hard perspective to achieve Jarvi's vision. Recent college graduate Matilda (Sarah Elizabeth) joins a haunted house just when another actor has suddenly ghosted her fellow crew during the height of the Halloween season. As the group of former theater kids and art-house devotees welcome Matilda into the fold, a masked serial killer picks them off one by one.
