‘Dr. Phil’ Talk Show to End in Spring After 21 Seasons
Image
“Dr. Phil,” one of daytime TV’s stalwart talk shows, will end its run of original episodes in the spring after 21 seasons on the air.

Dr. Phil McGraw, 72, made the decision to stop producing new episodes at the close of the current 2022-23 season. Distributor CBS Media Ventures hopes to keep the syndicated “Dr. Phil” on the air with a package of repeats through at least the 2023-24 season.

CBS sources emphasized that McGraw made the call to end production of the hourlong series that airs Monday to Friday. McGraw has been doing more as a producer of scripted primetime programming in recent years. He also hosts two podcasts. Despite steep declines across the board in linear TV, “Dr. Phil” is still averaging about 2 million viewers per episode. That makes it the highest-rated daytime talk show behind Disney’s “Live With Kelly and Ryan.”

For McGraw, the sunset of “Dr. Phil...

‘Dr. Phil’ Lays Off 25 Staff Members Ahead of Season 21
Phil McGraw in Dr. Phil (2002)
“Dr. Phil” has laid off 25 several staffers ahead of production for its upcoming Season 21. The show cited cost-cutting measures as its reasoning for the layoffs, which mostly affected production members.

“Going into Season 21, we streamlined production to ensure longevity,” a series spokesperson told TheWrap. “As is typical of this process there were some roles we discovered that we could reduce yet still deliver our dynamic, forward-thinking program.”

The CBS show, which will return Sept. 12, made headlines in the spring after a dozen current and former employees alleged a toxic workplace that is dominated by verbal abuse, intimidation and racism, as reported by BuzzFeed News. “’Dr. Phil’ — the show about mental health where everybody who works on it has terrible mental health because our work conditions were really bad,” one former employee said. ‘Dr. Phil’ Lays Off 25 Staffers As the Daytime Talk Show Returns For Season 21 (Exclusive)
Image
“Dr. Phil” is downsizing. The long-running daytime talk show, which returns in September for its 21st season, resumed production this month with 25 fewer staffers. The employees, who were mostly in production, were let go in a cost cutting move, the show confirmed to Variety.

“Going into season 21, we streamlined production to ensure longevity. As is typical of this process there were some roles we discovered that we could reduce yet still deliver our dynamic, forward-thinking program,” a spokesperson for “Dr. Phil” said.

The long-running daytime talk show made headlines earlier this year when a dozen current and former employees of “Dr. Phil” spoke to BuzzFeed News about the verbal abuse, fear, intimidation and racism they faced behind the scenes of the production. In addition to toxic workplace claims, seven of the employees accused “Dr. Phil” of manipulating guests of the show who are already in a vulnerable state. Seven employees...

‘DailyMailTV’ Ending Its TV Run This Summer
Image
It’s official: DailyMailTV, the syndicated show from Stage 29 Productions and syndicated by CBS Media Ventures, is wrapping up this summer.

The daily newsmagazine kicked off in 2017 and featured top stories from DailyMail.com that ranged from exclusives to breaking news, showbiz, crime, health and science, and technology. It was executive produced by Jay McGraw, as well as Carla Pennington (executive producer of Dr. Phil and The Doctors), Martin Clarke, Phil McGraw, Jeffrey Wilson and Eric Beesemyer.

In 2019, the show won a Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding Entertainment News Program category.

“We’d like to thank our phenomenal team who diligently and creatively produce the show each day, our loyal viewers who have tuned in for the past five years and our partners at DailyMail.com, Stage 29 Productions, CBS Media Ventures,...

Future of ‘The Doctors’ & ‘Daily MailTV’ In Doubt
Image
Updated: It appears unlikely that at least one of two CBS Media Ventures-distributed syndicated daytime talk shows, The Doctors and Daily MailTV, will continue beyond this season. We hear CBS employees were told today that both shows hailing from Jay McGraw’s Stage 29 Prods., are facing a possible end. There is conflicting information but we also hear there have been no official cancellations.

According to sources, Daily MailTV executives are still making their final decision whether the show will proceed with a sixth season.

The Doctors, created by McGraw, launched its first season in 2008. It was hosted by ER physician Dr. Travis Stork along with co-hosts plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon, dermatologist Dr. Sonia Batra, psychologist Dr. Judy Ho and Ob/Gyn Dr. Nita Landry.

After production was forced to shut down in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the show received a major makeover, shifting away the panel and live audience format,...

Another daytime TV star is facing claims of fostering a toxic workplace environment.

A dozen current and former Dr. Phil staffers tell BuzzFeed News that they faced verbal abuse from senior producers, experienced racism behind the scenes and witnessed guests being manipulated and treated unethically, describing the environment as “chaotic,” “hostile” and “overbearing.” One staffer called Dr. Phil “the show about mental health where everybody who works on it has terrible mental health because our work conditions were really bad.”

‘Dr. Phil’ Accused of Toxic Workplace in Report; Host’s Lawyer Blasts Back: ‘Clickbait Story’
Image
Patrick Morris, Phil McGraw’s personal attorney, is speaking out against accusations of a toxic workplace environment against the long-running daytime talk show “Dr. Phil.” A dozen current and former employees of the long-running series spoke to BuzzFeed News about the verbal abuse, fear, intimidation and racism they faced behind the scenes of the production.

“It is a clickbait story, because as everyone knows, Dr. Phil sells tickets,” Morris said in a statement to Variety. “BuzzFeed was offered dozens of current and former staff members to talk to but when BuzzFeed started hearing the truth, which ruined their salacious narrative, they declined. Dr. Phil focuses on content for the program and doesn’t get involved in staff relations, but the staff at the program in no way uses ethnic origin such as described.”

‘Dr. Phil’ Show Accused of Toxic Workplace Conditions, Manipulating Guests and Racism
Phil McGraw in Dr. Phil (2002)
The “Dr. Phil” talk show has again been accused of fostering a “toxic” workplace environment, this time in a lengthy article published Thursday by BuzzFeed News. A dozen current or former employees accused top producers of abusive behavior toward staff, fostering racist stereotypes both onscreen and off, and unethical treatment of guests — including a charge that one employee was instructed to tell a guest not to take prescription medication before going on air “because they wanted her to look unstable and quote-unquote, ‘crazy.'”

Phil McGraw denied the accusations through his attorney, H. Patrick Morris. Executive producer Carla Pennington, who was also accused of unprofessional behavior along with other senior-level producers, also denied the accusations through an attorney, Bryan J. Freedman.

“It’s a clickbait story because Dr. Phil sells tickets,” Morris said in a statement provided to TheWrap. “I happen to know BuzzFeed was offered dozens of current and...

From Overmedication to Past Success Stories, ‘Dr. Phil’s’ 20th Anniversary Season Is Stacked and Timely
Image
Today’s television landscape would look like an alien planet to visitors from 2002. Cable had only begun to hit its stride with original programming, “streaming” TV had not yet taken hold, binging an entire new series in a weekend wasn’t possible. And despite the existence of hundreds of channel options, a series focusing seriously on mental health was nowhere to be found.

Then Dr. Phil McGraw came along. After several tryouts on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” the folksy, mustached, straight talking doctor of psychology landed his own series. “Dr. Phil” premiered on Sept. 16, 2002 — and the floodgates were officially opened. Equal parts insight and heartfelt entertainment therapy, with a sprinkle of ratings-goosing sensationalism, McGraw and his team, which includes his wife, Robin, on camera and executive producer Carla Pennington behind it, kicked off with an episode focusing on stressed-out parents who yelled at their kids.

Twenty seasons later, they’ve never looked back.

Phil McGraw in Dr. Phil (2002)
How Catfishing Tales and Telling It Like It Is Helps ‘Dr. Phil’ Thrive in Daytime
Phil McGraw in Dr. Phil (2002)
Back when “Dr. Phil” launched in 2002, there was no Facebook, no Twitter.

“The problems [dealt with on ‘Dr. Phil’] were a little bit more simple back then. There weren’t a lot of catfishing stories or stories of people obsessed with being a Kardashian or internet famous,” says “Dr. Phil” executive producer Carla Pennington. “It was more ‘bullies on the playground,’ not cyberbullying.”

Steve LoCascio, COO of CBS Television Distribution and CFO of ViacomCBS Global Distribution Group, says “Dr. Phil” has grown newsier over time, dealing more often with current events.

Now, “there’s more of the ripped-from-the-headline exclusives,” LoCascio says. “He’s very proud of those kind of things where he steps in where justice is served by something he brought to light that previously was unknown.”

Interestingly, catfishing stories have become reliable ratings-drivers for the show nowadays: “It’s mainly women who are just looking so desperately for love they can’t...

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015)
Prescription for ‘Star’-dom: Dr. Phil McGraw Reflects on His Journey to Hollywood’s Walk of Fame
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015)
The ubiquity of Dr. Phil McGraw is no accident.

Whether he’s playing himself on the CW’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” raising eyebrows for his home décor in a real estate spread or appearing on a recent Fox primetime special about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal ruckus, McGraw is seemingly everywhere — including on a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as of Feb. 21.

“I was shocked he hadn’t gotten a star on the Walk of Fame sooner given his prominence in television. He pops up everywhere,” says Steve LoCascio, COO of CBS Television Distribution and CFO of ViacomCBS Global Distribution Group. “He’s in the lyrics of a Bon Jovi song. He’s been on countless episodes of TV shows playing himself.”

McGraw burst onto the national stage through appearances on Oprah Winfrey’s daytime talk show in the late 1990s, and by 2002 he had his own daytime show,...
