Kate Hudson has had a robust career, but “Running Point” marks a first for the actress. Believe it or not, this is her first leading TV role.
Now streaming on Netflix, the series focuses on Isla Gordon (Hudson), as she’s unexpectedly given control of her family’s basketball team, the Waves. Though a fictional team and story, “Running Point” is loosely based on Lakers president Jeanie Buss.
Here are all the major players you’ll need to know in the series.
Netflix Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson)
Isla Gordon is the sole daughter of the Gordon family, and is taken fully by surprise when her oldest brother hands her the reins to the team. She’s played by Kate Hudson, known for films like “Almost Famous,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” and many, many more.

Running Point made its debut on Netflix on Feb. 27, and the series starring Kate Hudson was an immediate slam dunk. The actress and singer stars in the comedy from Mindy Kaling as a reformed party girl who takes over the family business as its president. That business? The most lucrative professional men's basketball team in Los Angeles. No pressure at all for a woman!
On top of an incredible creative team behind the scenes, including Kaling's hilarious frequent collaborators Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen, Running Point features an exquisite ensemble cast that leans on the unique talents of Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Justin Theroux, Jay Ellis, Max Greenfield, and so many more.
Following the non-stop laughs throughout the near-perfect first season, the 10-episode comedy layup concludes with a nail-biting season finale. With Isla having taken the Waves to the playoffs against great odds, her personal life also takes...

This post contains spoilers from the Running Point season 1 finale.
What a season, huh? Of course, we're talking about the Los Angeles Waves basketball season in Netflix's new original comedy series Running Point. It was a real nail-biter from start to finish. But we're also obviously talking about the series itself, which was nothing be a pure, hilarious, and engaging delight from beginning to end.
When the season begins, Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) rises through the ranks of her family to replace her older brother Cam (Justin Theroux) as president of their family's professional basketball team. She's also in a happy relationship with her fiancé Lev (Max Greenfield), but the pressures of the basketball season wears on both her career and her relationship.

Mindy Kaling is back with Running Point. She has been a singular comic voice on television for the past fifteen years. Her Fox and Hulu series The Mindy Project, which you can also find streaming on Netflix, was one of the funniest sitcoms of the decade. Then came the semi-autobiographical Never Have I Ever, a hilarious coming-of-age story unlike anything else on television, whether streaming or network.
However, Running Point is nothing like those shows because it’s just another run-of-the-mill comedy. The series is not particularly funny, relying too heavily on excessive exposition and basketball lingo that isn’t executed well. It’s pleasant enough but ultimately a gigantic letdown, given the cast and the talent involved, particularly behind the camera.

Peak TV may technically be in the past, but its specter still lingers. How else do you get two flashy, star-studded TV shows about the Los Angeles Lakers in the span of three years? The first, HBO’s “Winning Time,” dramatized the basketball team’s years of triumph in the 1980s; the latest, Netflix’s “Running Point,” is both more contemporary and more fictional, though it has closer ties to the actual Lakers organization through owner Jeanie Buss and front office fixture Linda Rambis, both executive producers.
“Running Point” can and does stand on its own, but it’s useful to drill down on the comparison to “Winning Time” to establish why the newer show may stand a stronger chance at long-term success. Some of that potential comes down to shared strengths: like “Winning Time,” “Running Point” is as packed with famous faces, as any tribute to Hollywood’s home team ought to be.

Make some way for Netflix! The streaming service is dribbling down the court and shooting nothing but straight buckets with its latest original comedy series. Kate Hudson might be best known for her romantic comedies on the big screen, but the Oscar-nominated movie star is tackling her first leading role in a comedy series with Netflix's new sitcom Running Point.
She's not the only big name attached to the series. There are plenty more familiar faces in the main and supporting cast, but behind the scene, there's an even bigger name. None other than The Office and The Mindy Project (not to mention Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls) mastermind Mindy Kaling co-created the series, which she also writes and executive produces.

Rdj’s Unexpected Acting Partner! (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Robert Downey Jr. has worked with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. From the Avengers cast to his Sherlock Holmes co-stars, he’s shared the screen with some legends. But guess what? There’s only one actor he never wants to do another movie without. And no, it’s not Chris Evans or Jude Law.
You’d think it’d be one of his close Marvel buddies, right? Maybe even someone he’s had iconic on-screen chemistry with. But no! Rdj’s ride-or-die pick is Vincent D’Onofrio. Yes, Kingpin himself. The crazy part? They didn’t even share a scene in the MCU.
So, how did Downey Jr. end up vowing cinematic loyalty to D’Onofrio? It all started with a little courtroom drama called The Judge. And apparently, one film was enough for Rdj to declare a lifelong acting partnership.

If you're a fan of Mindy Kaling and are a Netflix subscriber, there's a bit of good and bad news for you going into the end of February 2025. No, her modern classic teen comedy Never Have I Ever isn't going anywhere (thankfully), but the star's eponymous sitcom The Mindy Project will be departing Netflix by the end of the month. Grab a bear claw and lie on the floor in distress!
As a comedy series that originally aired on Fox, then moved to Hulu as an original when the streamer saved it from cancellation, and was produced by NBCUniversal, it was surprising when the underrated workplace rom-com landed on Netflix back in January 2023. It was a pleasant surprise nonetheless as lots of new viewers had the chance to discover the series.

Tom Cruise will be returning for Top Gun 3 still, but development continues, a year after the new sequel was first confirmed.
We’re coming up to the third birthday of Top Gun: Maverick, a blockbuster that’s unlikely to ever be dislodged as the most successful of Tom Cruise’s career. In those three years since, director Joseph Kosinski has directed F1, which is finally set to arrive this summer. As for Cruise, he’s been working with writer and director Christopher McQuarrie on a pair of Mission: Impossible movies.
For the last year though, it’s been known that Paramount Pictures has a Top Gun 3 in development, and that Tom Cruise is set to play Maverick for a third time.
We’re some way away from James Bond development time territory here, but what’s interesting is there’s been no immediate rush to get Top Gun 3 before cameras.

Pedro Pascal remains a busy, busy man. This year alone, he has The Fantastic Four: First Steps coming up, as well as The Last Of Us Season 2. Those two come hot off the heels of Gladiator II and a voice role in The Wild Robot last year, and somewhere in the mix he’s also armouring up again for 2026’s The Mandalorian & Grogu. But that’s not all: this year, we’ll also see him in Freaky Tales, an anthology action-comedy heist film from director duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, their first feature since Captain Marvel. Set in the late ‘80s, it spins a multi-threaded tale around the attempted heist of a basketball star named Sleepy Floyd in Oakland, California. And, as the trailer suggests, things get… well, freaky. Check it out here:

No one will hold it against you if you admit to watching the Freaky Tales trailer and coming away with absolutely no idea what’s going on. Even the synopsis doesn’t really help. However, the twisted action comedy/drama’s got Pedro Pascal in the lead, so at the very least it’s got that going for it.

"Floyd's out there slicing people up with a sword!" Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for Freaky Tales, an anthology film set in Oakland in the late 1980s. This first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival a whole year ago, to mostly mixed & positive reviews (I was there at the world premiere - it was a blast). It's finally getting an official theatrical release in April this spring after a long wait. From directors Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, four interconnected stories set in 1987 in Oakland, California will tell about the love of music, movies, people, places, and memories beyond our knowable universe. The full cast features Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud, and Tom Hanks (yep!). One segment is about a group of partygoers fighting back against neo-Nazi punks, another is about a basketball player getting revenge after a robbery,...

Lionsgate has revealed the trailer for the action comedy Freaky Tales, which will open in theaters on April 4, 2025. The film has been rated R for strong bloody violence, language throughout including slurs, sexual content and drug use.
Set in 1987 Oakland, Freaky Tales is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters — an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector — on a collision course in a fever dream of showdowns and battles.
The movie was written and directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. Their credits include Half Nelson, Sugar, Captain Marvel and Mrs. America.
Executive produced by hip-hop pioneer Too $hort, and featuring an all-star ensemble including Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud and Tom Hanks, this pulpy blend of explosive action, edgy humor, gory kills, and sly twists and turns makes for one wild ride.

Fun fact: I saw Freaky Tales over a year ago at the Sundance Film Festival. In a fest known mostly for prestigious fare, it was a refreshing change of pace, with it a fast-paced action flick set in Oakland in 1987 that followed four interconnected stories over the course of one violent night. Despite mostly solid reviews, this one has sat on the shelf for a while, but now Lionsgate is giving it a theatrical release on April 4th.
Directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, in their follow-up to Captain Marvel, the film stars Pedro Pascal, Jay Ellis (Top Gun: Maverick), Ben Mendelsohn, and the late Angus Cloud (Euphoria). As shown by the trailer, this is a fun, fast-paced flick, that tells four inter-connected tales over the course of a single night in Oakland. In the first story, a young man (Avatar: The Way of Water’s Jack Champion) gets...

“Freaky Tales” is upon us. The new film from writers-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, over a year ago, and now Lionsgate is finally releasing this colorful, violent and wholly unique anthology set in 1987 Oakland.
In the vein of “Pulp Fiction,” the story follows various disparate characters whose stories intersect across a few days in the California city: an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector.
Pascal plays the debt collector who begrudgingly accepts one last job. Ben Mendelsohn is the corrupt cop. Dominique Thorne and Normani are a burgeoning rap duo. And “Top Gun: Maverick” breakout Jay Ellis is NBA star Sleepy Floyd.
The film is something of a fever dream with Boden and Fleck – who most recently directed “Captain Marvel” after a career made with indies like “Half Nelson” and “Mississippi Grind” – flexing...

If you’ve ever felt a tinge of nostalgia for the Bay Area in the 1980s, “Freaky Tales” is the movie for you.
The latest effort from filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck — who cut their teeth on independent films like “Sugar” and “Mississippi Grind” before directing “Captain Marvel” — is an omnibus film comprised of four vignettes set in Oakland in 1987. The film is a send-up of just about everything that shaped ’80s pop culture, from hip-hop and sci-fi blockbusters to the decade’s biggest sports stars and kung fu movies. The film first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, with Lionsgate eventually picking it up for a theatrical release this April.
An official synopsis for the film reads: “Set in 1987 Oakland, ‘Freaky Tales’ is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters — an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector — on...

Premiering over a year ago on the opening night of Sundance Film Festival, Freaky Tales was a hopeful return to proper filmmaking after Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck got sucked into the Marvel machine. Unfortunately, despite a game cast of Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud, and (briefly) Tom Hanks, the scattershot 80s-set Oakland anthology didn’t quite live up to its midnight movie vibes. After holding on to it for some time, Lionsgate will now give the film a wide release on April 4 and the first trailer has arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Set in 1987 Oakland, Freaky Tales is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters — an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector — on a collision course in a fever dream of showdowns and battles. Jay Ellis is a busy man. The “Insecure” and “Top Gun: Maverick” star is a regular at the Sundance Film Festival, but this year he only had time to pop in for a whirlwind 48 hours thanks to a schedule that includes two new shows coming out this year (Netflix’s “Running Point” and Peacock’s “All Her Fault”) and a theater gig in New York this summer. But Ellis still finds time within that packed slate to mentor the next generation of filmmakers.
Without a film playing at the festival, he was on hand to attend the IndieWire Chili Party and talk about his involvement in Rabbit Hole’s Creative Spirit Challenge. The premium spirits brand, which has long been a supporter of independent film, has launched a pitch contest in which first-time filmmakers can win the camera equipment needed to make their first short film.

Even though Younger was a fan-favorite hit during its inital seven-season run, the series has kicked off 2025 by having a major resurgence. On Jan. 7, the TV Land original romantic comedy series from creator Darren Star was added to Netflix and popped. As of Feb. 6, the show remains in the top 10 alongside recent new seasons of hit Netflix originals The Night Agent and The Recruit.
It's the most recent library series to come to Netflix and experience the "Netflix effect," which simply means that new viewers are discovering the series and old viewers are rediscovering the series. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in March 2025, Younger originally aired between 2015 and 2021 and effectively filled a gap for actually good guilty pleasure programming we'd been missing.
While your Netflix (re)binge-watch of Younger might be nearing its end, you're likely wondering what show to add to your watch list to keep the good times rolling.

[The story contains spoilers for the fifth and final season of Insecure.]
Issa Rae says some Insecure fans are still unhappy with how the show ended, even years later.
The Emmy-winning series, which ended in December 2021 following a five-season fun, followed the everyday and sometimes awkward experiences of modern-day Black women. Rae not only co-created Insecure but she also starred in it.
The show concluded with Rae’s character Issa Dee rekindling her romantic relationship with Lawrence Walker (Jay Ellis). However, some fans weren’t too happy with this renewed romance as the pair had an on-again, off-again relationship throughout the series. Lawrence had also fathered a child with another woman, Condola Hayes (Christina Elmore), around the same time that he and Issa were discussing a future together.
Rae recently told People magazine that even four years later, “people are really mad about” how the hit show ended.

Though Issa Rae’s seminal HBO dramedy Insecure has long since wrapped, with a final episode airing in late 2021, the multi-hyphenate is very aware that some fans are displeased with the ending — even to the point of asking for reshoots.
In a new interview with People, the Barbie star admitted she knows that “people are really mad about” how the show concluded. After five seasons spanning 2016 through 2021, the perennially awkward and self-titled Issa Dee opts to rekindle her romance with on-again, off-again beau Lawrence (Jay Ellis) to the chagrin of many devoted viewers, who had long since dismissed the ex as no good, especially after he fathered a child with another woman, Condola (Christina Elmore). Ellis’ character is so polarizing that the actor revealed in 2020 that he has been “punched,” “slapped” and “cussed out” due to his portrayal.

For a short month, February has never pulled its punches.
While our friends on IndieWire’s film team prepare for the Oscars, the month kicks off with the Grammy Awards on February 2, every year’s biggest TV and music crossover. It’s also host to one of the biggest TV events of the decade if not the century: the “Saturday Night Live” fiftieth anniversary celebration, a star-studded tribute to a storied institution (catch up on “SNL50” on Peacock!).
February is a big month for Netflix, starting with the Kaitlyn-Dever led “Apple Cider Vinegar,” a delicious story of social media fraud in set in the infancy of Instagram. The IndieWire Chili Party is a Sundance tradition like no other. Each year, IndieWire hosts filmmakers, dealmakers, and other Sundance attendees for an evening of creative conversations — and yes, chili — amid one of the biggest weeks of the year for independent film.
The 2025 event once again took place at the 1497 South Asian Lodge, a dynamic space designed to celebrate inclusivity, creativity, and community. 1497, a nonprofit founded by Lipica Shah, Adeel Ahmed, and Kamran Khan, aims to elevate the work of South Asian creatives and uses the lodge as a hub for its Sundance-related programming. The lodge is host to a robust array of programming throughout the festival, including a series of conversations with prominent South Asian filmmakers and an annual invite-only dance party, the Big Brown Throwdown.
The Chili Party was made possible through IndieWire’s partnerships with 1497 and Rabbit Hole, the official bourbon of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. The...

While we're anxiously awaiting Nobody Wants This season 2, Netflix has another original comedy series full of laughs and romance prepared to take over our watch lists. Once again, the streamer has an A-list star in the leading role, a hilarious team behind the scenes, and an exciting premise that will have us all hooked and laughing out loud.
Academy Award-nominated movie star Kate Hudson headlines the new Netflix comedy series Running Point, which makes its premiere on Thursday, Feb. 27. After starring the second season of the Apple TV+ anthology series Truth Be Told, Hudson takes on her first major leading role in a television series, and it's a title that has put the fan-favorite right back in her 2000s rom-com roots.
I don't know about you, but since Hudson was announced as the star of Running Point all the way back in January 2024, the series became one of my most anticipated new comedies.

For those that worship at the altar of Mindy Kaling, February brings good news.
The comedian’s latest project, “Running Point,” is a 10-episode comedy series starring Kate Hudson. When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla (Hudson) is put in charge of the L.A. Waves, one of the most famous NBA teams — and a family business. Also starring Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Jay Ellis and Max Greenfield, the show is the easiest of easy binge watches, with a bunch of comedians (and fun famous cameos!) set loose to do their thing.
For a laugh-free experience, this month also finds Robert De Niro in his first regular TV role, when the limited series “Zero Day,” also starring Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Angela Bassett, and Connie Britton comes to the platform February 20.
Here’s the logline: “Respected former U.S. President George Mullen, as head of the Zero Day Commission,...
