Now streaming on Netflix, the series focuses on Isla Gordon (Hudson), as she’s unexpectedly given control of her family’s basketball team, the Waves. Though a fictional team and story, “Running Point” is loosely based on Lakers president Jeanie Buss.

When the season begins, Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) rises through the ranks of her family to replace her older brother Cam (Justin Theroux) as president of their family's professional basketball team. She's also in a happy relationship with her fiancé Lev (Max Greenfield), but the pressures of the basketball season wears on both her career and her relationship.

Mindy Kaling is back with Running Point. She has been a singular comic voice on television for the past fifteen years. Her Fox and Hulu series The Mindy Project, which you can also find streaming on Netflix, was one of the funniest sitcoms of the decade. Then came the semi-autobiographical Never Have I Ever, a hilarious coming-of-age story unlike anything else on television, whether streaming or network.

However, Running Point is nothing like those shows because it’s just another run-of-the-mill comedy. The series is not particularly funny, relying too heavily on excessive exposition and basketball lingo that isn’t executed well. It’s pleasant enough but ultimately a gigantic letdown, given the cast and the talent involved, particularly behind the camera.

Peak TV may technically be in the past, but its specter still lingers. How else do you get two flashy, star-studded TV shows about the Los Angeles Lakers in the span of three years? The first, HBO’s “Winning Time,” dramatized the basketball team’s years of triumph in the 1980s; the latest, Netflix’s “Running Point,” is both more contemporary and more fictional, though it has closer ties to the actual Lakers organization through owner Jeanie Buss and front office fixture Linda Rambis, both executive producers.

“Running Point” can and does stand on its own, but it’s useful to drill down on the comparison to “Winning Time” to establish why the newer show may stand a stronger chance at long-term success. Fans eager for a Top Gun: Maverick sequel will have to wait a little longer, as the project is still in development. According to actor Jay Ellis, who played Reuben “Payback” Fitch in the 2022 blockbuster, work is ongoing to ensure the story meets high expectations.

Speaking at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards, Ellis gave an exclusive update on Top Gun 3 to Us Weekly. With a playful nod to his character, he joked, “So here’s what the story’s going to be. It’s going to be Payback. No, no, I’m kidding.” But on a serious note, he confirmed, “They’re still working on the script. They’re still working on the story. They’re wanting to get it right.”

Ellis’ comments reflect the careful approach being taken with Top Gun 3. Given the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, which was both a critical and commercial hit, expectations are sky-high.

After a year of development, Top Gun 3 is not quite ready for takeoff.

Jay Ellis, who plays Lt. Reuben ‘Payback’ Fitch in Top Gun: Maverick, recently gave an update on the third installment, which was Deadline reported was in the works at Paramount in January 2024.

“So here’s what the story’s going to be. It’s going to be Payback. No, no,” he jokingly told Us Weekly. “In all honesty, they’re still working on the script. They’re still working on the story. They’re wanting to get it right.”

Ellis added that co-star and producer Tom Cruise “is a stickler, and that really comes from him wanting to make sure the audience gets what they paid for and that they’re entertained. [So] that for those two hours, they can fully disappear in this theater, and the world around them doesn’t exist anymore, and [be] fully entertained.

But that’s not all: this year, we’ll also see him in Freaky Tales, an anthology action-comedy heist film from director duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, their first feature since Captain Marvel. Set in the late ‘80s, it spins a multi-threaded tale around the attempted heist of a basketball star named Sleepy Floyd in Oakland, California. And, as the trailer suggests, things get… well, freaky. No one will hold it against you if you admit to watching the Freaky Tales trailer and coming away with absolutely no idea what’s going on. Even the synopsis doesn’t really help. However, the twisted action comedy/drama’s got Pedro Pascal in the lead, so at the very least it’s got that going for it.

Joining Pascal are Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud (in his final film), and Tom Hanks. Yes, even Tom Hanks pops up in what Lionsgate describes as a “pulpy blend of explosive action, edgy humor, gory kills, and sly twists and turns.”

Fun fact: I saw Freaky Tales over a year ago at the Sundance Film Festival. In a fest known mostly for prestigious fare, it was a refreshing change of pace, with it a fast-paced action flick set in Oakland in 1987 that followed four interconnected stories over the course of one violent night. Without a film playing at the festival, he was on hand to attend the IndieWire Chili Party and talk about his involvement in Rabbit Hole’s Creative Spirit Challenge. The premium spirits brand, which has long been a supporter of independent film, has launched a pitch contest in which first-time filmmakers can win the camera equipment needed to make their first short film.

Even though Younger was a fan-favorite hit during its inital seven-season run, the series has kicked off 2025 by having a major resurgence. On Jan. 7, the TV Land original romantic comedy series from creator Darren Star was added to Netflix and popped. As of Feb. 6, the show remains in the top 10 alongside recent new seasons of hit Netflix originals The Night Agent and The Recruit.

It's the most recent library series to come to Netflix and experience the "Netflix effect," which simply means that new viewers are discovering the series and old viewers are rediscovering the series. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in March 2025, Younger originally aired between 2015 and 2021 and effectively filled a gap for actually good guilty pleasure programming we'd been missing.

Rabbit Hole executive Kaveh Zamanian and brand ambassador Jay Ellis joined IndieWire’s annual Chili Party at the Sundance Film Festival and announced its “Creative Spirit Challenge,” in which it will reward three filmmakers with a professional-grade Canon Eos R5 C camera, with one additional grand prize winner also getting a 1-on-1 mentorship opportunity with Ellis in addition to the camera equipment.
