Mamma Mia (2008) Movie Review
If your into nostalgia musically, a big Abba fan and don't mind Pierce Brosnan's feeble attempts at singing then you'll enjoy this musical ride down memory lane. Even if you're not an Abba fan, I still think you would enjoy this movie. The storyline (a love story) is great, the acting is terrific and the continuity throughout the picture is awesome. Benny (or is it Bjorn?) Andersson (one of the original Abba members) was an executive producer of the film and I believe has found another so called underdiscovered talent; at least in movies. This movie (recently released on DVD) has everything;...

Universal Studios Home Entertainment sold over 2.25 million units of the Golden Globe® -nominated blockbuster on December 16, 2008. An unprecedented worldwide box office phenomenon, Mamma Mia! 'Mamma Mia!' DVD Sells 2.25 Million in One Day
At a certain point, we're all going to have to recognize that how improbably the run is for Mamma Mia! this year. Yes, The Dark Knight made a billion dollars, but it was fueled by A+ marketing - probably the best, most consistent movie marketing campaign I've ever seen - and the unfortunate death of Heath Ledger, which certainly had something to do with ticket sales, great movie or not.

But Mamma Mia! opened the very same day, made a respectable amount of money in its American debut (against the biggest opening ever), a healthy sum over its theatrical run, and completely dominated the world stage like no other female-oriented movie has since Titanic.

There are a few movies that have made over half a billion this year, but in terms of overseas performance, only two movies all year have made more than the adaptation of the Abba-laced musical. Let's...

Mamma Mia! Marketing Invades America’s Malls; DVD/Blu-Ray Makes $30 Million on First Day
So I was at the Burlington Mall this past weekend when I slowly started to hear the distinctive sounds of Abba echoing throughout the hallways. As I got closer to the source of the music, I was surprised to discover four women dressed in Mamma Mia! T-shirts, walking around handing out “$3 off!” coupons for the DVD/Ray, and singing some of the greatest hits from the soundtrack. More importantly, two of them had TVs in their T-shirts. Yes. Working television screens. In their shirts.

I was able to whip out my Flip camera to record an ultra-brief interview I had with one of them. As my colleague Eric D Snider put it, “It’s part woman, part machine, all monster!”

Turns out the strategy might have bore some fruit: According to Universal, Mamma Mia! sold over 2.25 million copies on DVD and Blu-Ray yesterday (December...

Mamma Mia!: Two Disc Special Edition DVD Review -- Nico says if Three Men and a Baby had a drunken tryst with the music of Abba, Mamma Mia! would be the result
What is one of the world’s biggest self-professed nerds doing with a movie based on a musical based on the songs of Abba? Sad to admit, but enjoying himself. Mamma Mia follows Sophie as she prepares for her wedding day. Sophie desperately wants to know where she comes from and uses her mother’s diary to contact the three men who could possibly be her father. She writes as her mother, Donna, and invites them to the Greek Island. Blissfully unaware, Donna tends to her rundown hotel and prepares for her daughter’s wedding. You knew Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada, Adaptation) could act, but did you know she can sing as well? She drives this point home in her turn as Donna Sheridan. Julie Walters (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Calendar Girls) and Christine Baranksi (Bulworth, How the Grinch Stole Christmas) round out ...

Mamma Mia! Breaks Titanic Record
Move over Titanic, the dancing queens from Mamma Mia! are taking over. Mamma Mia! has officially become the biggest box office hit in the UK, heating out Leo and Kate's hit movie 'Titanic'. The movie, starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried, has taken in 69.05 million pounds ($106.75 million) since its premiere on July 18. Titanic previously held the record with 69.03 million pounds, or $106.66 million. Universal Pictures International president David Kosse explains to the Telegraph why the musical was such a success, "'Mamma Mia!' is pure escapism, proving a fun and inexpensive way...

"Mamma Mia!" Becomes U.K. Cinemas' Biggest Hit Ever
The 2008 Abba song-based film "Mamma Mia!" has become the biggest hit ever at the U.K. box office, beating the former all-time high "Titanic" at the list.

The film, starring veteran actress Meryl Streep, has taken 69.05 million pounds [around 6.75 million] at the box office since its premiere on July 18, beating the 1997 mega hit tragedy film "Titanic" with just a short margin - 69.03 million pounds or 6.66 million.

Universal Pictures International president David Kosse explains to the Telegraph why the musical was such a success, "'Mamma Mia!' is pure escapism, proving a fun and inexpensive way to forget about the state of the economy for a couple of hours."

"For Mamma Mia! to make history in this way and beat Titanic, which has held the record in the U.K. since 1998, is truly phenomenal. This film has exceeded our expectations and delighted audiences around the world since it opened in July."...

Mamma Mia!: Titanic's U.K. Record Run Aground
Meryl Streep has sunk the Titanic in international waters. The unflagging cheerfulness of Abba conquered the red-hot chemistry between Leo and Kate this week as Mamma Mia! nudged aside the 11-time Oscar winner as the top-grossing film of all time at the U.K. box office. The light 'n fluffy musical, en route to earning $571.7 million worldwide, has taken in $107.7 million across the pond after 22 weeks in theaters. Titanic held the record for 10 years after bagging 69 million pounds (about $107.5 million in today's currency) in 1998. "Mamma Mia! is pure escapism, proving a fun and inexpensive way to forget about the state of the economy for a couple of hours," Universal Pictures International...

Mamma Mia DVD Review
Synopsis: An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna (Meryl Streep) is about to let go of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski)—from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own. On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the [...]...

This Week in DVD: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Mamma Mia!, Traitor, Generation Kill, and More
This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, and Fry’s.

Please don’t take the commentary on the movies and TV shows too seriously, as they’re meant not to be reviews but rather previews that include the general thoughts and ramblings of a twice-committed DVD addict. The categories represent solely the author’s intentions towards the DVDs at hand, and are in no way meant to be a reflection on what he thinks other people should rent or buy. So if he ends up putting a movie you like in the “Skip it” section without having seen it, please keep in mind that the time you could spend leaving a spiteful but ultimately futile comment could instead be used for more pleasant things in life. Like buying DVDs.

Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 12/16 - 12/21
Note release dates, which are spaced from today through next Sunday.

Burn After Reading (12/21)

The Coen Brothers shine a bright light on Washington spy silliness, and then, by extension, all of the silly extremes we indulge in, producing a very funny comic fable that should reward multiple viewings. With George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Available on DVD and Blu-ray. Buy it.

The House Bunny (12/19)

Anna Farris' comic brilliance transcends the shopworn material. As Erik Davis suggested, "enjoy the movie for what it is: A simple, seductive slice of late-summer sunshine." Available on DVD and Blu-ray. Rent it.

Mamma Mia! The Movie (12/16)

I think you'd do better to spend your money on another album by Abba; this musical has bewildering choreography and a wandering camera that doesn't know where it should be. Still, Meryl Streep has a lot of fun with it, and her presence covers a multitude of sins. Available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Mamma Mia!: The Movie’ Makes Musical Magic
Chicago – To some people, a “Sing-Along” version of “Mamma Mia!: The Movie” might sound like a threat. “No, Timmy, you can’t watch The Dark Knight for the hundredth time and if you don’t do your chores, I’m going to make you sing along with Pierce Brosnan again.” But “Mamma Mia!” has a very specific, very satisfied audience and they will be giddy with Abba glee at the Blu-Ray release of their favorite movie of 2008.

It might have slipped under your radar while film goers were deluged with superheroes this summer. Maybe you didn’t notice that the Abba musical with Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Brosnan, Colin Firth, and dozens of singing-and-dancing Greeks made over $140 million domestically and over half-a-billion worldwide. It’s the number one film in the history of the United Kingdom, passing “Titanic” just last month. Yes, ever. I always knew those Brits were different.

tMF Top Picks: New on DVD - 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor', 'Mamma Mia!', and more
tMF Top Picks is a new weekly column that will look at the new DVD and Blu-ray releases for the week. We’ll take a pretty straightforward approach – tell you what’s coming out and give a few recommendations. - - - - - - Our friends at Get The Big Picture posted an article last month discussing the potential practice of studios abandoning the traditional big Tuesday DVD release date in lieu of studio selected release days of the week. (Read their full article here.) My personal annoyance aside, I agree with their take that the practice doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Why force the consumer to make multiple trips to rent or buy the movies they want to see rather than allowing us to rely on the simplicity of the functional tradition in place where everything that comes out in a given week will be there on the same day?...

New DVD Releases: Mamma Mia!; Mummy 3, and More
Still looking for a gift for the musical theatre fan in your household? You're in luck: Mamma Mia!, the blockbuster adaptation of the Abba-themed Broadway hit, arrives on DVD and Blu-ray today. Pick up a copy and witness the humiliating depths to which Pierce Brosnan has fallen in his post-Bond career. Take heed, Daniel Craig.

Also debuting on today: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the third -- and hopefully final -- chapter of Brendan Fraser's Indy-lite action franchise; The House Bunny, starring the perpetually underrated Anna Faris; and Don Cheadle's uneven political thriller Traitor.

New to Home Video: 'Mamma Mia!,' 'Mummy,' 'Burn After Reading'
About a month ago, we talked about a new practice studios and distributors were trying that broadened the number of days in a week that DVDs would be released. There are serious problems with it, not the least of which is that Warner Bros. can release something on Sunday and Disney on Thursday, and then Fox could decide that Friday suits them best. There's no rhyme nor reason to it.

Witness this week, which is really the first time we're having so many titles fly at us more than once a week. I guess the thought process is, if you release a movie on Saturday instead of the following Tuesday, then you get the weekend traffic. Of course, if you just released it the previous Tuesday, not only would everybody know it would be out that weekend, but you'd buy yourself even more days of in-store traffic.

I suspect a...

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed I was not prepared for this week's DVD and Blu-ray list, primarily because I forgot not only were studios releasing titles today but also on the 19th and 21st in a final Christmas push. There are A Lot of Blu-ray titles in this week's edition as Paramount unleashes an onslaught of catalog titles as you will see right off the bat and then Criterion also takes their first nose dive into Blu-ray this week with a selection of four titles. Then you have the usual new releases which come on DVD as well as with Blu-ray counterparts. As usual, clicking on the Buy Now links will take you to Amazon and show you the selection of all the versions of each film you can buy. Amanda Seyfried in Mamma Mia! (2008)
"Mamma Mia!" hits all time U.K. top spot
Amanda Seyfried in Mamma Mia! (2008)
London -- Universal Pictures International can finally boast that Phyllida Lloyd's "Mamma Mia!" is the highest grossing movie ever released in the U.K., sailing past the previous record holder, "Titanic."

Lloyd's romantic musical comedy finally sank the ten year grip "Titanic" has had on the record with her film singing its way to 69.1 pounds million ($105.3 million) while the James Cameron iceberg drama sailed away with 69 million pounds in 1998.

"Mamma Mia!" broke the long standing record just days after the film picked up two Golden Globe nominations for best picture (musical or comedy) and best actress (musical or comedy) for star Meryl Streep.

Upi president David Kosse described the success of "Mia" as "truly phenomenal."

Said Kosse: "This box-office record is a tribute to producer Judy Craymer, director Phyllida Lloyd and our brilliant cast who worked so hard on this film."...

Four More Oscar Scripts Including Kaufman's 'Synecdoche' and Lumet's 'Rachel Getting Married'
Photo: Courtesy the Awards Daily For Your Consideration gallery Sony Pictures Classics just emailed information on their updated For Your Consideration website which reveals the films they will be pushing this Oscar season and in what categories, and along with that gives me the change to alert you to four more Oscar contending scripts to read. They include Jenny Lumet's acclaimed script from Rachel Getting Married, Philippe Claudel's script for the fantastic I've Loved You So Long, Charlie Kaufman's script for his directorial debut Synecdoche, New York (maybe the script will make more sense) and Courtney Hunt's script for Frozen River which has been doing quite well lately in terms of late season recognition. Women Film Critics Honor 'Changeling,' Streep
Katey Rich from Cinema Blend voted for the Women Film Critics Circle Awards, which has now named its winners. As you might expect, their categories are slightly different than a typical list. They're intended to celebrate the work of women in the movies, but the group does acknowledge some general film awards, as well.

I'm a man, so I simply can't know, but the odds are there's still an awful lot of room for improvement in the treatment of women in show business, as there is everywhere else. But I'd like to think it's getting a little bit better as we go. And to show there's no hard feelings, the Wfcc gave an award to 9 1/2 Weeks and Angel Heart star Mickey Rourke. Talk about progress! (On the flip side, they also list the most offensive male characters of the year.)

2008 Continues to 'Stand Still' for 20th Century Fox - Will 2009 be Any Better?
Once again it appears 20th Century Fox has a film that won't be breaking any box-office records as their late-2008 sci-fi blockbuster The Day the Earth Stood Still earned $12.5 million on Friday and looks like it probably won't reach even the mid-to-upper $30 million mark many predicted and certainly not the overwhelming $55.2 million our Box-Office Oracle Laremy Legel assumed it would take in. At this point I'm sure Fox is just waiting for 2008 to end as this has been one of the worst years for a major studio that I can remember. Their biggest hits are an animated flick (Horton Hears a Who) and the awful comedy What Happens in Vegas. I am sure they were hoping The Day the Earth Stood Still would at least drum up some of the support last year's I Am Legend managed in the same frame when it earned $77.2 million in three days, but Keanu Reeves...

Golden Globe Nominations: Little Love For The Dark Knight
The 2009 Golden Globe Nominations have been officially announced and it looks like The Dark Knight has been almost totally snubbed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

That’s right folks, The Dark Knight received just one nomination: a Best Supporting Actor nod for Heath Ledger’s groundbreaking (and freaky) turn as The Joker. No Best Director nomination for Chris Nolan; no Best Screenplay nomination for Chris and Jonathan Nolan; no Best Original Score nomination (although Dark Knight composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard are both nominated in that category for work on two other films).

So, want to see which films stole the slots that rightfully belong to Tdk? Check out the list of the 2009 Golden Globe Nominees in film:

Golden Globe Nominations announced; diversity loses again
This morning’s announcement of nominations for the Golden Globe Awards brought good news and bad news. The good news: Tina Fey and 30 Rock still rule.

The bad news: Julia Louise-Dreyfus does not.

So, who took Dreyfus’ place in the Best Actress category for TV musical or comedy? Debra Messing, for The Starter Wife. That leads me to believe that none of the Golden Globe voters has ever watched The Starter Wife. L-a-m-e.

Voters did, however, keep their wits about them when they nominated America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Mary Louise-Parker (Weeds) and Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?). Although I could never be untrue to Tina, I have to say that I’m secretly rooting for Applegate this year. What an amazing woman.

In the TV drama category, Best Actress nominees are Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters), January Jones (Mad Men), Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer), Anna Paquin (True Blood) and Mariska Hargitay...

'Dark Knight' among Globes snubs
The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. didn't get "Milk." It barely acknowledged "The Dark Knight." And though in past years it loved "Sex and the City" the TV series, it ignored "Sex and the City" the movie.

It also challenged Clint Eastwood to prove he's a good sport.

The 81 active voting members of the Hfpa, the highly idiosyncratic group behind the Golden Globes, decided that Eastwood didn't deserve a directing nom for "Changeling" or "Gran Torino." And his performance as "Torino's" angry ex-Marine also didn't merit a spot among the best dramatic actor nominees -- even though the National Board of Review, an equally idiosyncratic lot, has proclaimed Eastwood the year's best actor.

Instead, the Globe-trotters, always eager to attract as many A-list celebrities as possible to their televised awards dinner, issued Eastwood an invitation by way of two music nominations: best score for "Changeling" and best song for "Torino."

Now,...

'Mamma Mia!' — No 'Doubt' Meryl Streep makes Golden Globe history
With her double Golden Globe nominations for lead actress in drama ("Doubt") and musical/comedy ("Mamma Mia!"), Meryl Streep is now the all-time Golden Globe champ with 23 nominations. Going into this year's Golden Globe race, Streep was one nom behind Jack Lemmon who amassed 22 lead nods and 4 wins (movie drama — 0/6; movie comedy - 3/10; and TV movie/mini — 1/6) over 40 years beginning in 1960. In her three decades of collecting awards hardware, Streep has won six Globes out of 21 previous bids. That winning record ties her with her pal Jack Nicholson. While all of Nicholson's Globes are for movies (3 drama actor, 2 comedy actor, and 1 supporting actor),...

The Best Picture awards are as follows: Best Picture (Drama): The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Frost/Nixon The Reader Revolutionary Road Slumdog Millionaire Best Picture (Musical or Comedy): Burn After Reading Happy-Go-Lucky In Bruges Mamma Mia! Vicky Cristina Barcelona No Dark Knight eh? I give up. The other nominees are what you expect. While I haven’t seen The Reader yet I can tell you it is a piece of predictable junk and Frost/Nixon is way overrated. I did like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (full review to come) and it has a solid shot of winning everything, in that it kinda us a replay of The English Patient (trust me on that.

66th Golden Globes Emphasize Star Power With Film Nominations
Chicago – The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards this morning and jaws dropped at some of their choices and some of their exclusions. Somewhat surprisingly, “The Dark Knight” was left out of the Best Picture category, but far more shockingly, “Milk” was also off the short list. Both films did get a single acting nomination - for Heath Ledger and Sean Penn, respectively - but the confusing awards season was made increasingly more so this morning by the Hfpa.

The big films of the year for the Hfpa were “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, “Doubt”, and “Frost/Nixon”, all of which landed five nominations. “The Reader”, “Revolutionary Road”, “Slumdog Millionaire”, and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” all followed with four nods a piece.

Regarding the nominations for “Benjamin Button”, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement, “We’re thankful to the...

Breaking Down the Golden Globe Nominations
One thing about the Golden Globes: You rarely know what the Hollywood Foreign Press is going to do. The Oscars are usually easier to predict, in part because it's the last awards show of the season and there are clear frontrunners and in part because there are a few traditions the Academy seems to follow. For example, I'm not saying Benjamin Button would win Best Picture if it gets an Oscar nomination, but we all know the history with the longest movie in that category. It usually wins.

But the Globes are like Billy Joel in the Hamptons: They're all over the road. Take a look at the Best Picture nominees in the drama category:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Frost/Nixon

The Reader

Revolutionary Road

Slumdog Millionaire

I've seen everything on the list. Revolutionary Road is not being treated favorably by most critics groups. And yet, it has amassed four nominations,...

2008-2009 Golden Globe Nominations
The 66th Annual Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

No movie had the most nominations this year. Instead five nods each were given to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, and Doubt.

Milk was left out of the “Best Drama” category by both Kate Winslet movies (Revolutionary Road, The Reader). It picked up only one nomination for Sean Penn as the title character. Meanwhile, Winslet was in the supporting and lead actress (drama) categories. Meryl Streep was also nominated twice for actress (drama) and actress (musical).

Heath Ledger received a nomination for his supporting actor performance, and will compete posthumously with Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. from Tropic Thunder.

Miley Cyrus was nominated for Best Song with Bolt’s “I Thought I Lost You,” which means she’ll be performing at the ceremony along with a song by Clint Eastwood and Bruce Springsteen.

Heath Ledger Earns Golden Globe Nomination
The Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning with three films each nabbing five nominations. No clear winner was in the pack with many of the films and performances yet to be sampled by audiences as the features slowly roll out to theaters across the country. As expected, though, Heath Ledger's Joker, did get a nod.

The Globes tend to recognize more mainstream fare but are also seen as a predictor for the Academy Award nominations, which will be revealed in February. The Globes will be aired on January 11 on NBC.

Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt Score Golden Globe Nods
There may be another set of twins coming to the Jolie-Pitt household – twin Golden Globe Awards, that is. Both Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were among those nominated Thursday morning for Golden Globes, part of Hollywood's pre-Oscar awards' season frenzy now underway. Pitt was nominated for his leading dramatic role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which, along with director Ron Howard's adaptation of the stage drama Frost/Nixon and another stage-to-screen transfer, Doubt, led the Globes' list, with five nominations each. The Reader, Revolutionary Road and Slumdog Millionaire are also nominees for best dramatic picture. Best musical...

'Button,' 'Doubt,' 'Frost/Nixon' Lead Golden Globe Nominees
Here are the Golden Globe nominees for this year, and as usual, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has managed to get a little quirky. First: Where's Milk? The film has been winning critics groups awards for a week and has been at or near the top of other lists since awards season started. It received one nomination, for Sean Penn.

Secondly, where's The Dark Knight? I didn't expect it to win Best Picture here or at the Oscars, but I felt it was going to be nominated. Instead, only Heath Ledger's name was called.

Third, it's good to be Kate Winslet. She was nominated twice, and both of her films, Revolutionary Road and The Reader, snagged four nominations, including Best Picture.

Fourth, congratulations to In Bruges. It's one of the year's absolute treasures, and it picked up acting nominations for both Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell, and was nominated...

List of the 2009 Golden Globe Award Nominees
Photo: Hollywood Foreign Press Association The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 2009 Golden Globes this morning and the complete list of Motion Picture nominees out of 184 live-action feature films (113 drama and 71 comedies or musicals) and 8 animated feature films is listed below. Looking over the surprises I would have to say The Reader getting in as a Best Picture (Drama) nominee while films such as The Dark Knight and Milk get snubbed is a major surprise. Michael Shannon not being nominated for Revolutionary Road while Tom Cruise gets a nod for his performance in Tropic Thunder caught me off guard and I am sure James Franco wasn't expecting a nomination for Pineapple Express as much as he was hoping for one from Milk, but I am sure he will take it either way. I am also assuming there will be a 50/50 discussion on whether or not Angelina Jolie...

Trio at top of Golden Globes film noms
Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. refused to play favorites Thursday morning as it doled out five nominations each to the romantic fable "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," the political showdown "Frost/Nixon" and the church-set struggle "Doubt."

As the nominations for the 66th annual Golden Globes were announced. "Button" and "Frost/Nixon" were nominated for best drama, along with "The Reader," "Revolutionary Road" and "Slumdog Millionaire."

In the comedy/musical category, the best picture nominees are "Mamma Mia!," "Burn After Reading," "Happy-Go-Lucky," "In Bruges" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

Among performers, Meryl Streep took home two nominations -- as best dramatic actress for her rigid nun in "Doubt" and as best musical/comedy actress for her free-spirited single mom in "Mamma Mia!"

Kate Winslet also scored a double, winning recognition as best actress for her unhappy housewife in "Revolutionary Road" and supporting actress for her German prison guard in "The Reader.
