If your into nostalgia musically, a big Abba fan and don't mind Pierce Brosnan's feeble attempts at singing then you'll enjoy this musical ride down memory lane. Even if you're not an Abba fan, I still think you would enjoy this movie. The storyline (a love story) is great, the acting is terrific and the continuity throughout the picture is awesome. At a certain point, we're all going to have to recognize that how improbably the run is for Mamma Mia! this year. Yes, The Dark Knight made a billion dollars, but it was fueled by A+ marketing - probably the best, most consistent movie marketing campaign I've ever seen - and the unfortunate death of Heath Ledger, which certainly had something to do with ticket sales, great movie or not.

But Mamma Mia! opened the very same day, made a respectable amount of money in its American debut (against the biggest opening ever), a healthy sum over its theatrical run, and completely dominated the world stage like no other female-oriented movie has since Titanic.

There are a few movies that have made over half a billion this year, but in terms of overseas performance, only two movies all year have made more than the adaptation of the Abba-laced musical. Let's...

So I was at the Burlington Mall this past weekend when I slowly started to hear the distinctive sounds of Abba echoing throughout the hallways. As I got closer to the source of the music, I was surprised to discover four women dressed in Mamma Mia! T-shirts, walking around handing out “$3 off!” coupons for the DVD/Ray, and singing some of the greatest hits from the soundtrack. More importantly, two of them had TVs in their T-shirts. Yes. Working television screens. In their shirts.

The film, starring veteran actress Meryl Streep, has taken 69.05 million pounds [around 6.75 million] at the box office since its premiere on July 18, beating the 1997 mega hit tragedy film "Titanic" with just a short margin - 69.03 million pounds or 6.66 million.

Mamma Mia! The Movie (12/16)

I think you'd do better to spend your money on another album by Abba; this musical has bewildering choreography and a wandering camera that doesn't know where it should be. Still, Meryl Streep has a lot of fun with it, and her presence covers a multitude of sins. Available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Chicago – To some people, a “Sing-Along” version of “Mamma Mia!: The Movie” might sound like a threat. “No, Timmy, you can’t watch The Dark Knight for the hundredth time and if you don’t do your chores, I’m going to make you sing along with Pierce Brosnan again.” But “Mamma Mia!” has a very specific, very satisfied audience and they will be giddy with Abba glee at the Blu-Ray release of their favorite movie of 2008.

It might have slipped under your radar while film goers were deluged with superheroes this summer. About a month ago, we talked about a new practice studios and distributors were trying that broadened the number of days in a week that DVDs would be released. There are serious problems with it, not the least of which is that Warner Bros. can release something on Sunday and Disney on Thursday, and then Fox could decide that Friday suits them best. There's no rhyme nor reason to it.

Witness this week, which is really the first time we're having so many titles fly at us more than once a week. I guess the thought process is, if you release a movie on Saturday instead of the following Tuesday, then you get the weekend traffic. Of course, if you just released it the previous Tuesday, not only would everybody know it would be out that weekend, but you'd buy yourself even more days of in-store traffic.

London -- Universal Pictures International can finally boast that Phyllida Lloyd's "Mamma Mia!" is the highest grossing movie ever released in the U.K., sailing past the previous record holder, "Titanic."

Lloyd's romantic musical comedy finally sank the ten year grip "Titanic" has had on the record with her film singing its way to 69.1 pounds million ($105.3 million) while the James Cameron iceberg drama sailed away with 69 million pounds in 1998.

"Mamma Mia!" broke the long standing record just days after the film picked up two Golden Globe nominations for best picture (musical or comedy) and best actress (musical or comedy) for star Meryl Streep.

Upi president David Kosse described the success of "Mia" as "truly phenomenal."

Katey Rich from Cinema Blend voted for the Women Film Critics Circle Awards, which has now named its winners. As you might expect, their categories are slightly different than a typical list. They're intended to celebrate the work of women in the movies, but the group does acknowledge some general film awards, as well.

I'm a man, so I simply can't know, but the odds are there's still an awful lot of room for improvement in the treatment of women in show business, as there is everywhere else. But I'd like to think it's getting a little bit better as we go. And to show there's no hard feelings, the Wfcc gave an award to 9 1/2 Weeks and Angel Heart star Mickey Rourke. Talk about progress! Once again it appears 20th Century Fox has a film that won't be breaking any box-office records as their late-2008 sci-fi blockbuster The Day the Earth Stood Still earned $12.5 million on Friday and looks like it probably won't reach even the mid-to-upper $30 million mark many predicted and certainly not the overwhelming $55.2 million our Box-Office Oracle Laremy Legel assumed it would take in. At this point I'm sure Fox is just waiting for 2008 to end as this has been one of the worst years for a major studio that I can remember. Their biggest hits are an animated flick (Horton Hears a Who) and the awful comedy What Happens in Vegas. The 2009 Golden Globe Nominations have been officially announced and it looks like The Dark Knight has been almost totally snubbed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

That’s right folks, The Dark Knight received just one nomination: a Best Supporting Actor nod for Heath Ledger’s groundbreaking (and freaky) turn as The Joker. No Best Director nomination for Chris Nolan; no Best Screenplay nomination for Chris and Jonathan Nolan; no Best Original Score nomination (although Dark Knight composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard are both nominated in that category for work on two other films).

The nominations for the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards, covering both film and television, are in. There aren’t too many shocking surprises expect maybe The Wrestler and Milk not getting Best Picture noms. Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr. and James Franco all got nominated for their work in Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express and I was glad to see In Bruges, one of the most underrated films of the year, get some love too. This morning’s announcement of nominations for the Golden Globe Awards brought good news and bad news. The good news: Tina Fey and 30 Rock still rule.

The bad news: Julia Louise-Dreyfus does not.

So, who took Dreyfus’ place in the Best Actress category for TV musical or comedy? Debra Messing, for The Starter Wife. That leads me to believe that none of the Golden Globe voters has ever watched The Starter Wife. L-a-m-e.

Voters did, however, keep their wits about them when they nominated America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Mary Louise-Parker (Weeds) and Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?). Although I could never be untrue to Tina, I have to say that I’m secretly rooting for Applegate this year. What an amazing woman.

In the TV drama category, Best Actress nominees are Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters), January Jones (Mad Men), Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer), Anna Paquin (True Blood) and Mariska Hargitay...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. didn't get "Milk." It barely acknowledged "The Dark Knight." And though in past years it loved "Sex and the City" the TV series, it ignored "Sex and the City" the movie.

It also challenged Clint Eastwood to prove he's a good sport.

The 81 active voting members of the Hfpa, the highly idiosyncratic group behind the Golden Globes, decided that Eastwood didn't deserve a directing nom for "Changeling" or "Gran Torino." And his performance as "Torino's" angry ex-Marine also didn't merit a spot among the best dramatic actor nominees -- even though the National Board of Review, an equally idiosyncratic lot, has proclaimed Eastwood the year's best actor.

Instead, the Globe-trotters, always eager to attract as many A-list celebrities as possible to their televised awards dinner, issued Eastwood an invitation by way of two music nominations: best score for "Changeling" and best song for "Torino."

The illuminati of “foreign press” put down their thermoses full of gin long enough to belch out a list of nominees for this year’s best in motion picture and television achievement. As it was announced by Terrence Howard at the 66th Golden Globes Nominations ceremony on Thursday, December 11, late Australian actor Heath Ledger has earned a nomination for Best Performance By an Actor In a Supporting Role In a Motion Picture. He will compete against Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. for their roles in war comedy "Tropic Thunder", Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Doubt" and Ralph Fiennes in "The Duchess".

Commenting on Ledger's nod, Terrence Howard said, "Heath was a friend of mine, he gave his all in that film ('The Dark Knight'). I think he will win in that category. He'll also get an Oscar."

In addition to Howard's comment, Heath Ledger's father, Kim, was also grateful for the count, telling People.com, "This nomination is deeply appreciated and is not lost on those of us who continue to love and miss him. We are so proud...

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon" and "Doubt" topped the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards nominations Thursday with five each.

David Fincher's "Button" and Ron Howard's "Frost/Nixon" made it into the category of best drama, along with "The Reader," "Revolutionary Road" and "Slumdog Millionaire."

As far as the best comedy or musical category is concerned, the nominees are "Burn After Reading," "Happy-Go-Lucky," "In Bruges," "Mamma Mia!" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

As expected, Anne Hathaway scored a nomination as best actress in a drama for her role in "Rachel Getting Married." She competes against Meryl Streep ("Doubt"), Angelina Jolie ("Changeling"), Kate Winslet ("Revolutionary Road") and Kristin Scott Thomas ("I've Loved You So Long").

Moving on to the best actor in a drama, it includes nominations for Brad Pitt in "Button," Sean Penn in "Milk," Leonardo DiCaprio in "Revolutionary Road," Mickey Rourke in "The Wrestler" and Frank Lamgella in "Frost/Nixon.

One thing about the Golden Globes: You rarely know what the Hollywood Foreign Press is going to do. The Oscars are usually easier to predict, in part because it's the last awards show of the season and there are clear frontrunners and in part because there are a few traditions the Academy seems to follow. For example, I'm not saying Benjamin Button would win Best Picture if it gets an Oscar nomination, but we all know the history with the longest movie in that category. It usually wins.

Late actor Heath Ledger has earned a posthumous Golden Globe nomination for his role as The Joker in Batman movie The Dark Knight.

The Australian star - who was found dead at his New York apartment in January - has earned a nod in the 2009 awards for Best Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role In A Motion Picture.

Ledger will compete against Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. for their roles in war comedy Tropic Thunder, Philip Seymour Hoffman in Doubt, and Ralph Fiennes for The Duchess.

Ledger's father, Kim, has spoken of his delight at his son's nomination, telling People.com, "This nomination is deeply appreciated and is not lost on those of us who continue to love and miss him. We are so proud our boy's work is being recognised in this way."

The movies battling it out for the coveted Best Motion Picture Drama award include Brad Pitt's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, The Reader, Revolutionary Road and Slumdog Millionaire.

With last year's telecast ceremony cancelled due to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, event organisers have made sure this year's event will be as star-studded as ever.

Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and partner Brad Pitt are both up for awards - Jolie has been nominated for the Best Performance By An Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her role in Changeling, while Pitt received a Best Actor nod for his performance in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.

Jolie will fight it out against Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married), Meryl Streep (Doubt), Kristin Scott Thomas (I've Loved You So Long) and Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road).

The other stars nominated in the Best Actor category are Leonardo DiCaprio (Revolutionary Road), Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Sean Penn (Milk) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler).

Meanwhile the nominees in the Best Director category are Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire, Stephen Daldry (The Reader), David Fincher (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button), Sam Mendes (Revolutionary Road), and Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon).

Frost/Nixon, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and Doubt lead the nominations with five nods a piece.

The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be announced during a television broadcast on 11 January.

The 66th Annual Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

No movie had the most nominations this year. Instead five nods each were given to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, and Doubt.

Milk was left out of the “Best Drama” category by both Kate Winslet movies (Revolutionary Road, The Reader). It picked up only one nomination for Sean Penn as the title character. Meanwhile, Winslet was in the supporting and lead actress (drama) categories. Meryl Streep was also nominated twice for actress (drama) and actress (musical).

Heath Ledger received a nomination for his supporting actor performance, and will compete posthumously with Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. from Tropic Thunder.

Miley Cyrus was nominated for Best Song with Bolt’s “I Thought I Lost You,” which means she’ll be performing at the ceremony along with a song by Clint Eastwood and Bruce Springsteen.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are among the many big names who received nominations for this year's Golden Globes -- including best actor and actress noms for the superstar couple! Brad's 'Curious Case of Benjamin Button' was one of the top pics with five noms, while Angelina's 'Changeling' is nominated for three awards. The Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning with three films each nabbing five nominations. No clear winner was in the pack with many of the films and performances yet to be sampled by audiences as the features slowly roll out to theaters across the country. As expected, though, Heath Ledger's Joker, did get a nod.

The Globes tend to recognize more mainstream fare but are also seen as a predictor for the Academy Award nominations, which will be revealed in February. The Globes will be aired on January 11 on NBC.

There may be another set of twins coming to the Jolie-Pitt household – twin Golden Globe Awards, that is. Both Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were among those nominated Thursday morning for Golden Globes, part of Hollywood's pre-Oscar awards' season frenzy now underway. Pitt was nominated for his leading dramatic role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which, along with director Ron Howard's adaptation of the stage drama Frost/Nixon and another stage-to-screen transfer, Doubt, led the Globes' list, with five nominations each. Here are the Golden Globe nominees for this year, and as usual, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has managed to get a little quirky. First: Where's Milk? The film has been winning critics groups awards for a week and has been at or near the top of other lists since awards season started. It received one nomination, for Sean Penn.

Secondly, where's The Dark Knight? I didn't expect it to win Best Picture here or at the Oscars, but I felt it was going to be nominated. Instead, only Heath Ledger's name was called.

Third, it's good to be Kate Winslet. She was nominated twice, and both of her films, Revolutionary Road and The Reader, snagged four nominations, including Best Picture.

Fourth, congratulations to In Bruges. It's one of the year's absolute treasures, and it picked up acting nominations for both Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell, and was nominated...

Looking over the surprises I would have to say The Reader getting in as a Best Picture (Drama) nominee while films such as The Dark Knight and Milk get snubbed is a major surprise. Michael Shannon not being nominated for Revolutionary Road while Tom Cruise gets a nod for his performance in Tropic Thunder caught me off guard and I am sure James Franco wasn't expecting a nomination for Pineapple Express as much as he was hoping for one from Milk, but I am sure he will take it either way. I am also assuming there will be a 50/50 discussion on whether or not Angelina Jolie...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. refused to play favorites Thursday morning as it doled out five nominations each to the romantic fable "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," the political showdown "Frost/Nixon" and the church-set struggle "Doubt."

As the nominations for the 66th annual Golden Globes were announced. "Button" and "Frost/Nixon" were nominated for best drama, along with "The Reader," "Revolutionary Road" and "Slumdog Millionaire."

In the comedy/musical category, the best picture nominees are "Mamma Mia!," "Burn After Reading," "Happy-Go-Lucky," "In Bruges" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

Among performers, Meryl Streep took home two nominations -- as best dramatic actress for her rigid nun in "Doubt" and as best musical/comedy actress for her free-spirited single mom in "Mamma Mia!"

Kate Winslet also scored a double, winning recognition as best actress for her unhappy housewife in "Revolutionary Road" and supporting actress for her German prison guard in "The Reader.
