Exclusive: Prime Video has opted not to renew The Sticky for a second season. The news comes more than two months after the six-episode first season of the Canadian comedy, starring Margo Martindale, Chris Diamantopoulos and Guillaume Cyr and guest starring Jamie Lee Curts, was released on Dec. 6.

Like another recently canceled Prime Video freshman comedy series, The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, The Sticky could not break through and draw wide enough audience despite solid reviews (80% on Rotten Tomatoes). Comedies take longer than dramas to, um, stick, which could explain why streamers are doing fewer half-hour shows and why those shows have a generally higher cancellation rate after a single season.

Amazon Prime Video has unveiled the first trailer for the dark comedy series “The Sticky.”

According to the official logline, the show “follows Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale), a tough, middle-aged maple syrup farmer who turns to crime when the bureaucratic authorities threaten to take away everything she loves. She teams up with the hot-tempered Bostonian mobster (Chris Diamantopoulos), and a mild-mannered French-Canadian security guard (Guillaume Cyr) to carry out a multi-million-dollar heist on Quebec’s maple syrup surplus.”

As Variety exclusively reported, all six episodes of the half-hour show will debut on Dec. 6. It is based on the real Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist, but makes it clear in the trailer that “this is absolutely not the true story.”

New Superman actor David Corenswet sets up his first movie role in Mr. Irrelevant for after his DC debut. The actor began his career in 2018 by guest starring in several TV shows, including Ryan Murphy's The Politician and Hollywood, before starring in the A24 horror film Pearl in 2022. This year, he had a supporting role in Twisters and is set to break out in a big way with his role in James Gunn's Superman, the first live-action film in the new DC Universe, releasing in July 2025.

According to Deadline, David Corenswet will star in the sports movie Mr. Irrelevant as John Tuggle, who was given the titular title after being selected as the final pick in the 1983 NFL draft. Jonathan Levine will direct while the Emmy-nominated writer Nick Santora (Most Dangerous Game) is penning the script.

Skydance Sports is in talks with David Corenswet (‘Superman”) to star as John Tuggle in “Mr. Irrelevant,” according to an insider with knowledge of the project.

The film is set to be directed by Jonathan Levine and written and produced by Emmy-nominated writer Nick Santora.

A search is underway for a new head of the TV group, which is getting downsized, with several people — believed to be fewer than 10 — being laid off today. Jonathan Levine is directing and Nick Santora is penning the script.

The release date for Dirty Dancing 2 has been delayed by over a year due to the ongoing strikes in Hollywood, with its release now expected in summer 2025. The sequel will need to address the absence of Patrick Swayze's character, Johnny, likely by portraying his character as having passed away, allowing Baby to work through her grief. Dance will continue to be a central theme in Dirty Dancing 2, with Grey's character possibly using it to find closure and resolution following Johnny's death. Lionsgate is making moves to its release calendar, including dating the video game feature Borderlands for summer 2024 and pushing dates for Dirty Dancing sequel and its prequel to Wonder.

Borderlands is now set to bow on Aug. 9, 2024. The film hails from director Eli Roth, and also underwent additional photography from Deadpool filmmaker Tim Miller. Borderlands, based on the popular gaming franchise, is a big swing for Lionsgate, which secured big stars to fill out the expansive cast of characters. The call sheet includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Haley Bennett and Edgar Ramirez. Exclusive: Lionsgate is pushing the theatrical releases of this August’s White Bird: A Wonder Story and next year’s Dirty Dancing sequel from director Jonathan Levine due to the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike, we hear.

White Bird, the spin-off prequel to the studio’s 2017 box office smash Wonder, was set to launch limited on Aug. 18 and go wider on Aug. 25. It’s now undated for Q4 at the end of this year. That leaves the last weekend in August without a wide theatrical release, which isn’t that unusual for that point in summer. White Bird stars Helen Mirren and Gillian Anderson, and it’s the type of movie that really needs the push from its actors to raise it above the fray. Now it’s in the Oscar season corridor, which is a better spot than the dog days of August. Best to wait the strike out.

In a surprising move, Hulu has confirmed that the Nicole Kidman drama Nine Perfect Strangers will return for season 2. Adapted from the Liane Moriarty novel of the same name by Big Little Lies creator David E. Kelley, Nine Perfect Strangers unfolded in Tranquillum House, a mysterious wellness retreat overseen by the charismatic founder Masha (Kidman). The characters, who were played by recognizable actors such as Melissa McCarthy, Michael Shannon, and Regina Hall, arrived for a relaxing stay that ultimately proved to be the exact opposite of what they'd hoped for.

After the Nine Perfect Strangers season 1 finale debuted in November 2021, Hulu has confirmed that the show will be back for season 2. Per TVLine, Kidman will be back as Masha and in her capacity as executive producer. Murray Bartlett, who recently played Armond in The White Lotus season 1 and Frank in HBO's Last of Us adaptation, is in talks to join the cast.

In addition, “White Lotus” and “The Last of Us” breakout Murray Bartlett is nearing a deal to star in Season 2, according to sources. The role would deepen Bartlett’s relationship with Hulu, as he recently starred in the streamer’s limited series “Welcome to Chippendales” opposite Kumail Nanjiani.
