He is a former England international footballer and later a manager of Middlesbrough F.C., the England Under-21 side and the England men's national team.

His penalty miss in England's sudden-death shoot-out with Germany in the semi-finals of the Euro 96 Championships knocked the team out of the tournament.

He played for Crystal Palace F.C. from 1988-1995, Aston Villa F.C. from 1995-2001 and Middlesbrough F.C. 2001-2006. He was mostly known as a central defender, but also played at right-back and in midfield while at Crystal Palace.

He lifted the league cup in Middlesbrough's win over Bolton Wanderers on February 29th 2004 (leap year day) at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff. This was the first time the club had won a major trophy in it's 128 year history.

He was the bookies' favourite to be the next England manager following Roy Hodgson's resignation in 2016 due to his record as manager of the England Under-21 team, having won 26 of his 33 matches in charge. However, Sam Allardyce was appointed instead due to his greater experience in club management. Allardyce lasted just one game and was forced to resign following an undercover newspaper sting and Southgate was appointed. Southgate's appointment was controversial among some critics due to his relative lack of club management experience and success, having only managed Middlesbrough at club level for three years, a role from which he had been dismissed in 2009.

In his first tournament as England manager, he took them to the semifinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, becoming only the third England manager to take the team to the last four of a World Cup, after Alf Ramsey in 1966 and Bobby Robson in 1990. As a result, he won the BBC Sports Coach of the Year award and was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2019 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to football.
