While fans wait for the upcoming revival series, the franchise has already gained significant buzz for stretching in another bold direction with the recently launched prequel, Dexter: Original Sin.
So now the question isn’t just what’s to come- it’s, should you rewind before moving forward? Is watching Original Sin crucial for understanding the events of Resurrection? Or is it just optional lore for diehard fans? Here’s all we know about the blood-spattered world of Dexter.

Michael C. Hall points out the one single misstep that Dexter: Resurrectionwon't be making.

Everything you need to know about Dexter: Original Sin Season 2(Photo Credit –Prime Video)
Well, let’s be honest, fans of the Dexter franchise are dying to see more of young Dexter Morgan’s twisted journey. The prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, starring Patrick Gibson as a fresh-faced (but still very stab-happy) Dexter, dives into his early days at the Miami Metro Police Department, long before he became the cold, calculated killer we first met in Dexter.
After the mixed reception of Dexter: New Blood, many thought Showtime had buried the franchise for good. But nope, they’re all in on Dexter-mania, with Original Sin setting the stage for the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection (which will finally bring Michael C. Hall back). Showtime clearly has big plans, and with season 2 officially on the way, Dexter: Original Sin isn’t just surviving, it’s thriving. Time to sharpen those scalpels,...

The “Dexter” mythology continues. “Dexter: Original Sin” has been renewed for a Season 2 at Paramount+ with Showtime.
Showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips will return to the series. Though production dates have yet to be set, TheWrap has learned the writers room for this upcoming season will be opening soon.
This renewal is far from surprising given the popularity of Season 1. That installment was the most streamed Showtime original that the network has seen in 10 years, a boost that likely has to do with Showtime’s streaming options moving exclusively to the more robust Paramount+ in 2023. The season finale for Season 1 scored 2.68 million global viewers, making it the most-watched episode of the season. The story of Dexter Morgan didn't originally include multiple television series, but as of 2025, three have been made and two more are on the way. Dexterwas one of the biggest television shows when it aired. Telling the story of a vengeful serial killer hunting other murderers that fit his code, Dexter sees the titular character navigate his horrific nightlife with his daytime facade of being a blood-splatter analyst. This show was hugely entertaining and profitable, resulting in the series continuing for eight seasons.
The show causes the audience to question their own morality and ethics when they happily watch a sick and twisted serial killer enjoying murdering people. Not only is the premise exciting, but the show also has infinite creativity and storytelling. Unfortunately, some fans believe the show started to take a dip in quality halfway through its run and ended up closing on what some consider to be...

Breaking Bad was filled with brief but highly memorable character appearances throughout its runtime, and several of the most boisterous personalities from the original show ended up making it into Better Call Saul as Easter eggs for fans. One of the most important people to come and go through the AMC drama, though, only returned through various mentions and innuendos. Still, if you ask the actor who played that role, it all made for a very fitting tribute indeed. In a key Breaking Bad flashback scene, Max Arciniega, portrayed by James Martinez, was introduced as the business partner of Gustavo Fring. Together, the two self-proclaimed “chicken brothers” attempted to make a deal with the cartel to make methamphetamine for them to distribute. Max was a chemist and helped Gus create both the signature Los Pollos Hermanos marinade recipe and his drug formula. During their pitch meeting with Don Eladio at his pool,...

The ultimate evil of "Breaking Bad" is our antihero, Walter White/Heisenberg (Bryan Cranston). But if anyone can match him and (almost) overcome him, it's drug lord Gustavo "Gus" Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). A Chilean immigrant with a mysterious personal history, Gus wears the smiling face of the friendly, charitable fried chicken chain Los Pollos Hermanos — but that's just a mask, plastered over a ruthless master criminal. Then buried even further beneath Gus' iciness is vengeful rage; he's not only in the meth business for the money, but to eventually kill the cartel leadership that long ago murdered his boyfriend Max (James Martinez).
Due to the success of "Breaking Bad" and typecasting, Gus is the character who Esposito will be playing for the rest of his career, whether his name is Stan Edgar ("The Boys"), Moff Gideon ("The Mandalorian"), or literally Gus Fring again.

Featuring voiceover narration from original series lead Michael C. Dexter: Original Sin is shaping up to be an incredible follow-up to Dexter. Ending more than a decade ago, Dexter originally aired from 2006 through 2013. But the show has seen a renewed life thanks to the 2020 limited series revival Dexter: New Blood and streaming on Netflix. This prequel series, which stars Patrick Gibson as the titular character (Michael C. Hall reprising his role as voice-over narrator), tells the story of how a young man with deep-seated urges to kill, found a way to harness his Dark Passenger for “good” with the help of his detective father Harry.
Before Dexter amassed a collection of blood slides of his victims, and long before he even started collecting trophies at all, he was a murder “virgin” who hadn’t yet killed.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 5 and Thanksgiving (2023).A dark theory about the mystery killer in Dexter: Original Sin seems very plausible after a 2023 horror movie starring the possible murderer. The mystery of who killed Jimmy Powell in Dexter: Original Sin is shaping up to be the show's biggest twist. There are only a handful of new characters in the cast of Dexter: Original Sin, which means there are only a few potential killers so far. Since characters like Angel Batista (James Martinez) and Maria Laguerta (Christina Milian) are still around in the original Dexter, there's no way they could have killed Jimmy Powell.

Dexter: Original Sin is a prequel that tells the backstory of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) from Dexter. The vigilante killer often talked about his Code, taught to him by his father. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Dexter: Original Sin episode 4.
Dexter: Original Sin's episode 4, "Fender Bender," shows Dexter making his first fatal error, resulting in the biggest cliffhanger ending in the prequel series. After a divisive Dexter: Original Sin premiere and a tremendously vintage double-episode release just in time for Christmas, the fourth of ten Dexter: Original episodes continues to make impressive and entertaining strides for the series. With his first two kills under his belt, Dexter takes aim at an ex-hitman named Mad-Dog.
Episode 4 also leans into Debra's season-long narrative as one of the popular volleyball jocks at her high school. While her conflicts are much more common and less violent than the secrets her brother and father, Harry Morgan, keep hidden, Debra's attempts at scoring drugs to impress her friends and snub the mean girl feel like classic high school stunts pulled straight out of The Breakfast Club and Clueless.

It’s been almost three years since the controversial ending to Dexter: New Blood, and creator Clyde Phillips has finally come clean about why he decided to kill off the beloved vigilante serial killer in what was – at the time – one of the biggest shocks in TV history. The 10-episode event saw the return of Michael C. Hall to the character he made famous after nearly eight years away, only for him to be gunned down by his own son when it was all said and done, seemingly left for dead in the snow.

The Dexter universe is growing larger by the second. Dexter: Original Sin is currently telling the origins of the young serial killer, but another prequel series could soon follow. Deadline reports that a prequel series revolving around the Trinity Killer (played by John Lithgow in the original series) is still “in development” at Paramount+.
The Trinity Killer prequel series was actually reported to be in condition in early 2023, but it’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about it. Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips and Dexter writer/producer Scott Reynolds will serve as co-creators and executive producers of the Trinity Killer prequel series. Phillips even revealed that John Lithgow has agreed to come back and provide the inner voice of his younger self, much in the same way Michael C. Hall is doing for Dexter: Original Sin.
“We wrote the entire Trinity Killer series.

Molly Brown has the daunting task of portraying the younger version of fan-favorite character, Debra Morgan, in the new prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin. Taking an iconic character and making it her own is no small feat, but the Original Sin star recently revealed that she received the biggest vote of confidence from none other than Jennifer Carpenter, who portrayed Deb for all eight seasons of the original Showtime series and the follow-up miniseries Dexter: New Blood.
In an interview with IndieWire, Brown shared that she has yet to meet with Carpenter personally, but that she sent her blessing through the Original Sin casting director when she won the part. "She gave the casting director John Papsidera a message to pass to me, which was really nice that I have her support," Brown said. "[She said] that she’s my biggest fan, which she and my mom might have to discuss whether that’s true or not.

The crime drama series Dexter originally aired on Showtime for eight seasons, from 2006 to 2013, then it was revived with a season called Dexter: New Blood in 2021, and now a prequel series called Dexter: Original Sin is airing on Showtime and the Paramount+ streaming service. Since the show takes place 15 years before the original show, it required a new cast to bring younger versions of the Dexter characters to life – and during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actors James Martinez and Alex Shimizu revealed what it was like to take on the roles of Detective Angel Batista and forensics expert Vince Masuka.
Martinez follows in the footsteps of David Zayas to play Batista, and he told The Hollywood Reporter that he and Zayas knew each other from the New York theater community before he got the job on Dexter: Original Sin. “I’ve always been a fan of his stage work.

When Dexter: Original Sin viewers see the fedora and hear the giggle, they know who’s coming.
For eight seasons on the original Dexter, the audience of Showtime’s hit serial killer series became familiar with the main players on the Miami Metro Homicide team where Michael C. Hall’s starring Dexter Morgan worked. Two of those characters were Detective Angel Batista, played by David Zayas, and forensics expert Vince Masuka, played by C.S. Lee.
Prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, which arrived on Paramount+ last week, heads back to the 1990s to show how Dexter (played here by Patrick Gibson) became the blood splatter analyst by day and serial killer by night who viewers were introduced to in the 2006 series. James Martinez and Alex Shimizu take on the Batista and Masuka roles in the prequel, bringing back their signature fedora and giggle, respectively.
