Holliday Grainger and Callum Turner in The Capture (2019)
The Capture Season 2 Cast: No Callum Turner, But Meet the New Characters Here
Holliday Grainger and Callum Turner in The Capture (2019)
Warning: contains spoilers for The Capture series one.

The Capture‘s first series saw Lance Corporal Shaun Emery (Callum Turner) go full circle. In episode one, he was released from prison – acquitted for a crime he had, in fact, committed – and then in episode six, he was imprisoned for a crime of which he was innocent. In between, the BBC surveillance thriller introduced viewers to a world in which you literally can’t believe your eyes. As Dci Rachel Carey (Strike‘s Holliday Grainger) discovered, the intelligence services were using ultra-sophisticated deepfake technology to conjure up court-admissible ‘evidence’ to ensure the criminal conviction of anybody they wanted convicted.

The situation turned out to be even more morally murky when the CIA whistle blower threatening to go public with the practice of CCTV footage “correction” turned out to be a double (triple?) agent planted by the CIA so that some elements...

BBC Promotes ‘The Capture’ Season Two To Coveted Bank Holiday August Slot
Image
Exclusive: The BBC is betting big on season two of Heyday Television’s deepfake spy thriller The Capture, promoting it to the coveted Bank Holiday weekend 9pm slot that in recent years has been occupied by Bodyguard, Peaky Blinders and Vigil.

Deadline can exclusively reveal the scheduling for this year’s August Bank Holiday Sunday, which sees Ben Chanan’s Holliday Grainger-starring six-parter graduate from a Tuesday 9pm slot where it posted average rating of nearly 7.5M viewers per episode and was BBC iPlayer’s most requested new title across all genres of 2019. Season two will drop on U.S. streamer Peacock in November.

Season one’s audience increased through the run and Rebecca Ferguson, BBC Drama Commissioning Editor, said it was this “word of mouth” that partly drove the scheduling decision.

Speaking to Deadline, she credited the show’s sophistication paired with entertainment value as the driving force behind its success.

Comic-Con ‘At Home’ Friday Schedule: Charlize Theron, ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Helstrom’
Image
This year’s virtual Comic-Con@Home has announced its schedule for Friday, July 24. The highlights are below.

The virtual event replaces the annual San Diego Comic-Con, the largest fan convention in North America, which was to be held July 22–26 at the San Diego Convention Center, until the Covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.

In June, Comic-Con International — the non-profit organization that oversees Sdcc and its sister event, WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif. — announced it was moving forward with the virtual event on the same dates. This time, however, the event is free and open to all.

Friday’s events include panels for all three of AMC’s “Walking Dead” series, Hulu’s new Marvel series “Helstrom,” and creatives like Charlize Theron, Joss Whedon, and Robert Kirkman.

The Comic-Con@Home schedule — including Wednesday, July 22 and Thursday, July 23 — is being announced daily through Sunday.

All times are Pacific Daylight.

Peacock’s ‘The Capture’: TV Review
Image
NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock is borrowing prestige from across the Atlantic for its launch, airing the series “The Capture” after its debut on the U.K.’s BBC One. The series — a crime thriller that’s easily comprehensible but that has provocative ramifications — seems right on target for a service seeking content that can appeal broadly. With strong performances and an unabashed willingness to state its points plainly, “The Capture” suggests solid possibilities for Peacock as a space for shows that are brainier than can thrive on broadcast TV but still retain broadcast’s punch and verve.

“The Capture” starts with one alleged crime, veers into another, then announces the presence of a third overlaying the whole thing. Shaun Emery (Callum Turner), a veteran of the war in Afghanistan as a lance corporal in the British armed forces, is acquitted of murdering a prisoner of war. His getting off...

The Missing (2014)
‘The Missing’ Review: Season 2 Reverses the Classic Kidnapping Narrative to Compelling New Ends
The Missing (2014)
Dramas focusing on a kidnapping — especially of young children — typically follow a simple trajectory: The family is introduced. The child is taken. The family is torn apart. A detective saves the day (or, at least, finds answers), and a happy ending or haunting lesson is imparted to the audience.

Typically, there’s a guessing game involved, as a number of suspicious supporting characters pop up throughout the story, and the audience is invited to solve the mystery. Their reward is being right or being surprised, but what typically elevates some kidnapping dramas above the rest is what elevates any drama: formal elements — directing, writing, acting — that build upon an audience’s immediate empathy for the taken child and the tormented family.

“The Missing” was one of the most heart-wrenching TV shows of 2014, as it chronicled the journey of parents struggling to come to grips with the mysterious disappearance of their young boy. The show’s back with a whole new tale, again written by Harry and Jack Williams, and this time with Ben Chanan as the director of every episode.

The ability to stand still every so often works wonders for a thriller. Quiet moments don’t just offer a slip road away from the roaring influx of revelation, they allow tension to build and realisations to gradually dawn. Characters are given a chance to breathe uninterrupted by the noise of plot.

The Missing, gripping as it is, could afford to stand still a little more often. With a cast this good, there’s plenty to keep our attention without erratically leaping from strand to strand,...
