‘Sky Peals’ Review: An Intriguing Parable About Identity Among Those Who Feel They Do Not Belong
Image
In crafting a quietly affectionate film about a man who thinks he might be an alien, “Sky Peals” director Moin Hussain manages to make an allegory about solitude and isolation with a deft and steady hand. The film’s lead character, a 30-something British man of Pakistani origin, could be a stand-in for millions who feel removed from their roots while living within cultures and among people who think of them as outsiders. Hussain’s skillful filmmaking avoids making obvious points, instead deepening the narrative as a singular character study with sci-fi elements.

Adam (Faraz Ayub) still lives with his English mother (Claire Rushbrook) while working as a night shift short order cook at a gas station diner. His life is small: just home and work, with no apparent close relationships. He has closed himself off from the world, having never been able to make real connections with other people.

The 15 Best Occult Movies, Including The Conjuring & Hereditary
Image
Demons, witches, devils, and dark magic. These subjects have always been a source of both fascination and fear, which is why they make such excellent fodder for horror genre filmmakers. Occult movies are so successful because they bring just a hint of realism to the scary stories viewers know and love; and the best occult movies don’t just provide frights in the moment — they continue to linger in our brains long after the credits roll.

Unsurprisingly, most movies about the occult tend to fall under the horror genre, a genre that many dismiss as being low culture. While some horror movies offer little more than cheap scares, the best offer thought-provoking commentary on subjects like feminism, grief, and religion. And there are those occult movies that have stood the test of time and are considered the scariest horror movies ever made.

Though these series work best in a typical television format, anthology series have also seen a ton of success in the streaming industry. Thus, even when viewers decide to binge these shows over a few days, they can still appreciate how the individual narratives blend over time. As such, it seems that this vintage genre has seen an impressive revival throughout the 2020s.

‘Members Club’ Review
Image
Stars: Liam Noble, Dean Kilbey, Perry Benson, Mark Manero, David Alexander, Juliet Cowan, Charley Burling, Barbara Smith, Steve Oram, Alan Ford | Written and Directed by Marc Coleman

Members Club is a new horror comedy about Wet Dreams, a troupe of male strippers who were at their prime back when The Full Monty was a thing. Now they’re well into middle age, their middles are well out of shape and the bookings are drying up. Drying up to the point that their manager, Deano has just dropped them. But not before managing to book them a gig at a 12-year-old’s birthday party.

Refusing to admit defeat, or face the prospect of getting a real job, Alan takes charge and soon has a well-paid gig lined up. Of course, we know there’s a catch, but all Alan, Neil, Ratboy, and Carly can think of is the promise of their first big payday in years.

Members Club review – male strippers meet bloodthirsty witches in gory comedy horror
Peter Andre in Episode dated 10 July 2019 (2019)
Hapless dance troupe Wet Dreams get a taste of the dark arts when they’re lured to a gig to raise the dead. Plus: a cameo from Peter Andre

Resolutely raunchy, gory, and very silly, this comedy horror is trashy for sure, but it’s mildly amusing and manages to deliver offensive gags that avoid outright misogyny. That’s no mean feat given the core plot is about a troupe of middle-aged male strippers who fall into a trap laid by a coven determined to raise a 16th-century witch from the dead. To complete this project, penises must be severed – a prospect our heroes aren’t keen on, for obvious reasons. You can imagine the elevator pitch: The Full Monty meets Necromancy, or some such.

The leader of the strippers, who go by the handle Wet Dreams, is feckless, fiftysomething Alan (Dean Kilbey), a terminal screw-up living in a rented...

Ben Wheatley in Down Terrace (2009)
Generation Z | Trailer released for Ben Wheatley zombie series
Ben Wheatley in Down Terrace (2009)
Kill List Ben Wheatley returns to the small screen this month with Channel 4 zombie comedy series, Generation Z. Here’s a trailer:

Kill List director Ben Wheatley is about to television with this autumn’s Generation Z, which Wheatley has written and directed for Channel 4.

According to the British Comedy Guide, the series is a horror satire which pits a group of small-town teenagers (the gen-z of the title) against a horde of toxin-infected, rabid pensioners. It’s a little bit like Rabid Grannies, then, but with a distinctly political, post-austerity, post hope-for-the-future spin.

As the synopsis points out, it’s about “the increasingly stark divisions between generations,” and depicts “a modern Britain at war with itself. Sounds good!

The cast is itself a platter of multi-generational comedy talent. Elder states-people of telly Sue Johnston (The Royle Family), Anita Dobson (EastEnders) and Robert Lindsay (Citizen Smith) are joined by...

Alice Lowe

Alice Lowe is not only a brilliant actor, but she’s also been behind the camera on some of the most esoteric, original British films of the last few years. Her next film is even more ambitious. Timestalker is a science fiction comedy romance, with a dash of time travel thrown into the mix. The synopsis reads as follows:

Members Club (2024) Review
Image
For the male stripper group Wet Dreams, business is not exactly booming. The bottom has fallen out of the market for four middle-aged blokes taking their kit off and, after a disastrous booking at a birthday party, it looks like it’s time to call it a day. However, front man Alan (Dean Kilbey) decides to buy out longtime manager Deano (Liam Noble) and can’t believe his luck when he instantly lands the guys a lucrative gig in a rural part of Essex.

Of course, there’s a catch – and what a catch it is. Not only has Alan not read the small print about the specific outfits he and his mates will be required to don, neither he nor his mates is prepared for the part they’ve been lined up to play in a ritual which plans to bring a murdered 16th century witch back from the dead.

Mind-Set (2022)
Steve Oram on the beautiful sadness of Mikey Murray’s Mind-Set
Mind-Set (2022)
Mind-Set is a poignant and funny indie directed by Mikey Murray, and starring Eilis Cahill and Steve Oram. To mark the film’s release we had the pleasure in speaking to the latter, as Oram talks to us about his process in tackling a role that comes with such a great deal of authenticity, a character who is, for use of a better word, normal.

Oram also talks about shooting in Murray’s house, he shows us a tin of baked beans (makes sense in the moment) and speaks about working his co-star Cahill. He also talks about capturing the tricky tonality of a film that is equal parts funny and strangely moving at the same time.

When one becomes reasonably well known as a film critic, one finds oneself deluged daily with more films than there are waking hours. It’s impossible to watch them all and, sadly, it’s all too easy for good ones to sneak by under the radar. I might never have seen Mikey Murray’s Mind-Set except that last year I interviewed Steve Oram about another film, Cerebrum, and he mentioned that he had recently enjoyed working on an independent drama with a brilliant young director who he thought had a lot of potential. After our conversation he sent the film my way, and I instantly fell in love with it.

Astute, mature films which are also funny and yet retain the power to break one’s heart like this are few and far between. I talked it...

Ben Wheatley in Down Terrace (2009)
Mind-Set review – sarkiness, stoicism and squash power weirdly likable lo-fi indie
Ben Wheatley in Down Terrace (2009)
Mikey Murray’s crowdfunded debut has a bit of Ben Wheatley about it, with Steve Oram as a struggling screenwriter and Eilis Cahill as his lonely wife

Film-maker and lecturer Mikey Murray has made a funny, stroppy, gloomy, punky movie for his crowdfunded lo-fi indie debut: a film in granular black-and-white with a little bit of Ben Wheatley in the mix, creatively using whatever locations come to hand and transforming almost hyperlocal personal material in the script. It’s a downbeat film, flawed and rough-around-the-edges, but weirdly likable in its morose stoicism and unexpected romanticism.

Steve Oram and Eilis Cahill play Paul and Lucy; Paul is a screenwriter, never leaving the house, brooding over a connoisseur-collection of vinyl and working on his sci-fi film script about a space cadet struggling with his sexuality – “Brokeback Mountain meets Silent Running” as he insouciantly puts it. And while working from home, Paul exchanges...

‘Sky Peals’ Review: Intimate British Character Study Chronicles a Multiracial Man’s Estrangement
Image
The term “alien” takes on multiple meanings in writer-director Moin Hussain’s intriguing and rather gloomy debut feature, Sky Peals, which follows a lonely rest-stop cook whose life is upended by the death of his estranged father. Although extraterrestrials are evoked at some point, this intimate indie is less of a sci-fi thriller than a minimalist character study, focusing on a multiracial protagonist who doesn’t seem to be at home anywhere.

Screening in Venice’s International Critics’ Week sidebar, the film marks a promising first feature for Hussain, who shows a steady command of tone in a story that’s basically set in one colorless, extremely alienating place. But it can also be too much of a one-note affair at times, lacking the dramatic energy to take it to wider audiences.

What’s important to note about Sky Peals’ young hero, Adam (Faraz Ayub), is that his mother (Claire Rushbrook...

Priyanka Chopra Explains How Nick Jonas Cameo in Love Again Saved A Stranger From Waiting 14 Days to Lick Her Face
Image
Priyanka Chopra specifically asked her husband, Nick Jonas, to join her in the movie Love Again to avoid kissing a random actor during the Covid-19 pandemic. The romantic comedy, which is a remake of a German film, has gained popularity on Netflix after initially flopping at the box office. Nick Jonas is not only an experienced musician but has also shown his acting skills in Broadway musicals and movies like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

Priyanka Chopra revealed recently that she specifically wanted her husband Nick Jonas to join her in her latest movie, Love Again, for a very particular but logical reason.

After flopping at the box office earlier this year, the romantic comedy starring Chopra and Outlander's Sam Heughan is now conquering Netflix, enjoying of some delayed popularity. The film is a remake of the 2016 German movie SMS für Dich, which is based in the 2009 novel of...

Where Was Love Again Filmed? All Filming Locations Explained
Image
Love Again, a romantic comedy starring Priyanka Chopra and Sam Heughan, follows a woman finding love again after her fiancé's death. Despite being set in New York City, most of the film's scenes were filmed in London, primarily in Hackney. The movie also filmed scenes in Swale, Kent, and the United States, although specific filming locations in the US were not specified.

Love Again tells the story of a woman finding love again (as the title suggests) following the death of her fiancé, and while the film's backdrop is New York City, the movie was not solely filmed within the confines of the metropolitan area. The 2023 romantic comedy stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mira Ray and Sam Heughan as Rob Burns, an unlikely match who strike up a connection following an accidental text exchange. Mira texted her fiancé's old number, obviously thinking her messages would go unanswered, and was surprised when Rob texted her back.

‘Cerebrum’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Tobi King Bakare, Steve Oram, Ramona Von Pusch | Written and Directed by Sebastien Blanc

Will, an insecure young man, struggles to adapt to his new life after waking up from a coma. Upon returning home, he must fight his estranged father, Richard, in order to be able to see his seemingly absent mother, and uncover the true consequences of his past actions. Richard, however, is in denial, stuck in the past, and desperate to hold on to what once was – with deadly consequences.

Cerebrum is what many would call a slow burn of a horror film. At first, beyond Will’s visions of his dead mother, there’s nothing really horrific about writer-director Sebastien Blanc’s film. It starts off exploring the relationship between father and son, how the accident affected that relationship, and how the pair’s relationship has changed after not only the change in Will struggling...

Jordan Peele
Cerebrum review – enigmatic sci-fi horror possessed by a promising madness
Jordan Peele
Race, adoption, guilt and resentment are threaded through this Jordan Peele-influenced tale of a son returning home after a mysterious accident to discover his mother is absent

The influence of Jordan Peele’s mighty Get Out lingers behind this enigmatic British sci-fi horror, with its stricken black hero, while white folk get up to insane things in basements; thanks to the often frontal framing, there is something in the visual style too. The difference is that race is an unspoken subtext here, completely submerged somewhere inside the atmosphere of dissociated trauma.

Tobi King Bakare plays William, adopted child of Richard (Sightseers’ Steve Oram), who emerges wheelchair-bound and mute from a coma after an unspecified accident. He returns home to complete his physical and mental recovery, afflicted by white-hot flashbacks to speeding roads. His dad seems doting and solicitous, but is disturbingly evasive about his mother Amelia (Ramona Von Pusch); she is also convalescing,...

Jim Strouse at an event for People Places Things (2015)
Love Again Review: Just Walk Away
Jim Strouse at an event for People Places Things (2015)
Early in writer-director Jim Strouse’s Love Again, music journalist Rob Burns (Sam Heughan) receives his latest assignment: a profile on Celine Dion as she embarks on a new tour. When Rob, a defiantly unsentimental Scottish bloke, scoffs at the gig, his editor (Steve Oram) fires back by declaring that Dion is in the midst of a “Celine-aissance.” The legitimacy of that statement is debatable, but Dion is at least experiencing something of a cinematic boomlet, between the gonzo fictionalized biopic Aline and references in films as diverse as Turning Red and Queens of the Qing Dynasty.

In any case, Dion is the selling point of Love Again, with the Canadian pop superstar executive producing, performing new songs for the soundtrack, and co-starring as herself. The central narrative of this syrupy-sweet romantic-comedy, however, follows the romantic entanglements of Rob and grieving children’s book illustrator Mira Ray (Priyanka Chopra Jonas). Two years ago,...

Frightfest 2022: ‘Cerebrum’ Review

Cerebrum - Jennie Kermode - 17858
We still know very little about comas – why they happen and what goes on during them. What we do know points to the idea that they allow time for the brain to heal following traumatic damage which usually has a clear physical cause but can sometimes be wholly or partially psychiatric. When Will (Tobi King Bakare) wakes up in hospital, he’s dealing with elements of both. He has very little memory of the car crash which put him there. He’s been out for so long that his muscles have weakened and he finds it difficult to stay on his feet. He’s also unable to speak.

At a time like this, it might seem like quite an advantage to have a neurosurgeon for a father. This is Richard (Steve Oram), who takes him home with the help of a wheelchair, shows him into a room which he has set up downstairs.

Centring on the troubled relationship between a father and son, Sebastien Blanc’s feature début Cerebrum, which is screening as part of Frightfest 2022, deals with themes around loss, guilt and the lengths that people will go to to try and hang on to those they love. Tobi King Bakare plays William, a young man struggling to regain both his physical abilities and his memory after waking from a coma, whilst Richard, the father who is looking after him and struggling to find the right moment to break the news of his mother’s death, is played by Steve Oram, one of the UK’s most distinctive actors and a man frequently seen in genre film. Ahead of the festival, Steve and I connected for a chat and began by talking about his approach to choosing roles.

“I've done leading roles,” he says, “but a lot of it comes down to.

Best Irish Horror movies
Image
One of the great things about horror movies is that they offer a universal experience. No matter where you go in the world, the same things are considered scary, which is why great horror movies are made all over the world. Today we’re going to be focusing on ones made or produced in Ireland, so if you’re looking for a fright, try one of these out.

The Sleep of Death

The Sleep of Death was released in 1980 and was written and directed by Calvin Floyd. It’s often described as a Swedish-Irish film, thanks to the prevalence of Swedish cast members. The film is based on the 1872 novella The Room in the Dragon Volant and is sometimes called The Inn of the Flying Dragon, in reference to the title of the novella. The story follows a young Englishman called Colonel Gaillard, played by Per Oscarsson, who goes to France to pursue a woman,...

Eilis Cahill in Mad (2016)
Mind-Set - Jennie Kermode - 17831
Eilis Cahill in Mad (2016)
In an elegantly filmed sequence about halfway through Mikey Murray’s accomplished début feature, Lucy (Eilis Cahill) stands at a tall office window watching cars circle a roundabout backwards and disappear. She’s a small, dark figure going nowhere in a world of neat suburban houses and ordered lives. How did she come to be so lonely, to feel so out of place? Murray offers viewers a superficially conventional storyline with a straightforward explanation and solution, but there is a great deal more going on beneath the surface; his characters are not that simple.

Lucy is married to Paul (Steve Oram). We see them together in the opening scene, when they’re lying in bed together putting one another off sex with mundane and vaguely irritable conversation. She doesn’t find him very attractive and he knows it, doesn’t blame her for it. His sadness comes from elsewhere. Later,...
