Image
When you purchase through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Angelina Jolie is one of the most iconic actresses in the film industry, and she has starred in some extremely entertaining films in her three-decade-long career, but she also starred in some duds along the way. After making her screen debut as a child in the 1982 film Lookin’ to Get Out, Jolie has starred in at least 55 films, and some of them are among the most popular, like Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Salt, but there were also some embarrassing films like The Tourist or the Lara Croft sequel. So, we decided to compile a list of her 5 worst films that hold embarrassingly low critic ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

5. The Tourist (Rent on Prime Video) Credit – Columbia Pictures

The Tourist is a romantic thriller film directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Christopher McQuarrie and Julian Fellowes.

Why Fuzz From Star Trek: Section 31 Looks So Familiar
Image
"Star Trek: Section 31" takes the franchise on a road less traveled by bringing back "Star Trek: Discovery" standout Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) and putting her in charge of a heist. Unlike the "Star Wars'" take on the heist movie theme in 2016's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," the often more idealistic and pacifistic "Trek" opts for a far more light-hearted route. "Star Trek: Section 31" is B-movie trash in the best possible way, as the Academy Award winning Yeoh rocks her fallen tyrant character's new role as the head of arguably the most ragtag team a "Star Trek" project has ever given fans.

Among the key members of the film's Section 31 special ops team is the unpredictable and intense Fuzz, who probably wouldn't be a main character in just about any other "Star Trek" film. Fuzz is played by South African actor Sven Ruygrok, a rising star who's been making...

Johnny Depp Sustained A Bloody Injury While Filming The Tourist
Image
When it was released in 2010, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's "The Tourist" -- a remake of Jérôme Salle's 2005 French thriller "Anthony Zimmer" -- was unfairly maligned. The film only racked up a piddling 21% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 175 reviews, with critics lambasting the complicated plot and the casual pace. Peter Travers called it one of the worst films of the year, and Roger Moore felt the two leads, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, had no romantic chemistry.

Stephanie Zacharek, however, loved it, noting that it was the kind of romantic international caper film that isn't made anymore, calling it "elegant" and "sensuous." This author tends to agree with Zacharek, feeling "The Tourist" to be sexy, adult, and dazzling. It has two sexy movie stars trekking through gorgeous European locales, engaging in lightweight espionage and trading flirty looks. It feels like a movie from a prior generation, one...

Daniel Brühl on ‘Electrifying’ Experience Playing Fashion Icon in Disney+’s ‘Becoming Karl Lagerfeld:’ ‘It Was Like a Rollercoaster’
Image
Fifteen years after “Inglourious Basterds,” Daniel Brühl is back on the Croisette, this time on the pink carpet at Canneseries, for the world premiere of “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld,” a prestige Disney+ miniseries which offered him one of his biggest acting challenges to date. To play Lagerfeld, Brühl not only perfected his French and learned to speak and walk with small heels like the late fashion icon, he also pulled from his own life experience as a perpetual foreigner, being both German and Spanish. Produced by Gaumont (“Lupin”), the six-part series chronicles the rise of Karl Lagerfeld through the world of 1970s Parisian high fashion. The lushly lensed series opens in 1972, as 38-year-old Karl Lagerfeld aspires to become the most famous French fashion designer, at a time when Yves Saint Laurent reigned supreme. Powered by a pop aesthetic, the series sheds light on the tumultuous love affair between Lagerfeld and Jacques de Bascher.

‘Kompromat’ Review: A French Ballet Sparks an International Incident in Icy Thriller
Image
Years after the word “kompromat” had its moment in the popular imagination during a certain Special Counsel investigation, Jérôme Salle’s thriller of the same name arrives as a nerve-racking reminder of just how life-ruining being targeted by the Russian government might actually be. Salle, who co-wrote the film with Caryl Férey, opens the proceedings with a helpful definition for the uninitiated — “documents used to destroy someone’s reputation” — as well as important context: “Kompromat” is based on a true story, though the principals are unnamed. The result is cold but competent, which, whether intentional or not, is ultimately apropos of the subject matter.

Mathieu (Gilles Lellouche), a French arts ambassador working in Siberia, inadvertently runs afoul of his host country’s government and is raided by the Fsb (the modern-day Kgb) as a result. His actual “crime” would appear to be dancing with the wrong woman (Joanna Kulig of...

He finally gets out of jail and returns to Paris with a vast fortune inherited from a former inmate, ready to avenge himself from the so-called friends in high places who framed him and led to his imprisonment.

“Adapting Monte-Cristo today…means portraying a legendary hero who is knocking down one by one the powerful figures who (betrayed him),” said Franck, whose screenwriting credits include Olivier Assayas’ “Carlos.

This time renowned French director Jerome Salle has accused the makers of plagiarising the film from his French movie Largo Winch, which had hit theatres in 2008. Many, who watched Saaho in India, tagged the director on social media and pointed out certain uncanny resemblances in the plot to Salle’s French movie. Jerome Salle in a cheeky response to a fan’s tweet, wrote: “I think I have a promising career in India (sic).” I think I have a promising career in India. https://t.co/XAiERdgUCF — Jérôme Salle (@Jerome_Salle) August 30, 2019 This is the second instance where a Telugu film has been accused of borrowing the core plot from Largo Winch. An unknown emotion by Anne-Katrin Titze
Hélène Fillières on Nick Cave's Into My Arms in Raising Colors (Volontaire): "It's probably the most romantic song I've ever heard." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze Laure (Diane Rouxel) with Commander Rivière (Lambert Wilson)

The last time I saw Lambert Wilson in person, he was performing his tribute to Yves Montand at the French Institute Alliance Française in New York. He was Jacques Cousteau in Jérôme Salle's The Odyssey (L'Odyssée) and now in Hélène Fillières' Raising Colors (Volontaire), co-written with Mathias Gavarry, he is Commander Rivière at the École Navale. The Commander is lovingly called 'the monk' by the chief training officer Albertini, played by Alex Descas. Laure (Diane Rouxel) in her twenties and with a first-rate education, decides to accept a job offer in the administration of the French Navy. Her mother (Josiane Balasko), a famous stage actress, is particularly upset and vocal about this turn of events.

French director threatens legal action on ‘Agnyaathavaasi’ makers
TollywoodSources point out that the makers of the Pawan Kalyan starrer had paid about Rs 10 - 12 crore to T Series, which has remake rights for ‘Largo Winch’ in India.Digital NativeThe director of the French movie Largo Winch, Jerome Salle, has threatened legal action against the makers of Agnyaathavaasi for plagiarising his film. Announcing the same on social media, the director tweeted, “Indian cinema has all the necessary talent and creativity for not having to plagiarize. And the silence from #Agnathavaasi team since one week is deafening. So let’s take action now. #LegalNotice” Indian cinema has all the necessary talent and creativity for not having to plagiarize. And the silence from #Agnathavaasi team since one week is deafening. So let’s take action now. #LegalNotice — Jérôme Salle (@Jerome_Salle) January 18, 2018 However, sources point out that the makers of the Pawan Kalyan starrer had paid about Rs 10 - 12 crore to T Series, which has remake rights for Largo Winch in India. But according to the French film’s director, the rights were for India only but Agnyaathavaasi was released worldwide, which means legal action is still possible. Experts point out that the makers of Agnyaathavaasi had settled the issue with T Series and had paid for the Telugu version. If this news happens to be true, then there can be no cause for legal action. Directed by Trivikram Srinivas, the film has Pawan Kalyan and Keerthy Suresh playing the lead pair. It also has a bevy of stars in the cast including Anu Emmanuel, Adhi Pinisetty, Boman Irani, Khushbu and other playing pivotal roles. Agnyaathavaasi released to packed houses this Sankranthi but the mixed reviews are not working in its favour. The film’s first week worldwide distributor share is around 56.30 cr. The film’s theatrical rights were valued at 128 cr and a minimum loss of 69 cr is easily expected. Anirudh Ravichander made his debut as music director in the Telugu film industry with this flick, with V Manikandan cranking the camera and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao editing it. Agnyaathavaasi was produced by S Radha Krishna under his banner Haarika & Haasini Creations. With Jerome Salle threatening legal action, it needs to be seen how this matter would be resolved. It may be noted here that the director had earlier tweeted that he would travel to India to watch the movie.

The thing about evil by Anne-Katrin Titze

At his hotel on Central Park South, director Roberto Andò discussed with me the connections to Alfred Hitchcock's I Confess and Torn Curtain in his latest film, which character was inspired by Jk Rowling, the majestic location where he filmed, and how "evil serves no purpose."

The Confessions (Le Confessioni), co-written by Angelo Pasquini, shot by Maurizio Calvesi, and starring Toni Servillo (Paolo Sorrentino's Oscar-winning The Great Beauty and Andò's Viva La Libertà) has an exceptional ensemble cast including Connie Nielsen (Patty Jenkins's Wonder Woman), Marie-Josée Croze (John Michael McDonagh's Calvary), Daniel Auteuil (Michael Haneke's Caché), Moritz Bleibtreu (Tom Tykwer's Run Lola Run), Lambert Wilson (Jérôme Salle's L'Odyssée), Pierfrancesco Favino (Roger Michell...

Amid copyright row, 'Largo Finch' director curious to watch 'Agnyaathavaasi'
Entertainment“I think I’m gonna buy a ticket (plane first then movie)," the director tweeted.Digital NativeReports that the Pawan Kalyan starrer Agnyaathavaasi is based on the French movie Largo Winch started to do rounds several months ago and the doubt strengthened with the film’s tagline ‘Prince in Exile’. Apparently, Largo Finch is about the adopted son of a businessman trying to track down the killers of his father and prove that he is the legal heir. There have been speculations that the storyline of Largo Finch and Agnyaathavaasi are similar but the makers haven’t responded to that allegation yet. Further, T-Series, which has the remake rights of the French Film in India, has issued a legal notice to the producers of Agnyaathavaasi ahead of its release on January 10. While the censor formalities have been cleared and the film is gearing up for release, this legal tangle comes as a problem. Meanwhile, the director of Largo Finch, Jerome Salle has said that he is curious to watch Agnyaathavaasi. Taking to his Twitter page, he posted, “I think I’m gonna buy a ticket (plane first then movie) #Curiosity #Agnyaathavaasi #LargoWinch” I think I'm gonna buy a ticket (plane first than movie) #Curiosity #Agnyaathavaasi #LargoWinch Pawan Kalyan's Agnyaathavaasi in copyright row: T-Series seeks explanation on plagiarism of Largo Winch https://t.co/ajeucceixd via @ibtimes_india — Jérôme Salle (@Jerome_Salle) January 2, 2018 Directed by Trivikram Srinivas, Agnyaathavaasi is produced by S Radha Krishna under his banner Haarika & Haasini Creations. The film stars Pawan Kalyan in the lead role with Keerthy Suresh playing his female lead. Others in the star cast are Anu Emmanuel, Aadhi Pinisetty, Boman Irani, Kushboo, Parag Tyagi, Rao Ramesh, Sampath Raj, Murali Sharma, Vennela Kishore, Ajay, Sameer Hasan, and Aadukalam Naren. Anirudh Ravichander, who is making his debut as music composer with this flick in Tollywood, will also be seen making a cameo appearance in it along with the veteran actor D Venkatesh. With T Series slapping a legal notice of the makers of Agnyaathavaasi seeking an explanation and the director of Largo Finch curious about the film, it needs to be seen how the filmmakers would react. 21st Colcoa French Film Festival Adds Vr and Web Series Categories, Unveils Full Expanded Festival Slate
Marie (1993)
Colcoa is keeping up with the times. Now in its twenty-first year, the lauded French film festival, sponsored by the Franco-American Cultural Fund, has added a pair of forward-thinking new categories for its newest edition. This year will include a virtual reality program and a web series competition, in addition to its Cinema, Television and Shorts competitions.

“These two new popular formats offer more opportunities to showcase the creativity of French producers and filmmakers as well as the diversity of French production,” said François Truffart, Colcoa Executive Producer and Artistic Director. “While entertainment is still the key word for the program, with a balanced mix of comedies and dramas, several topical issues will cover the program this year, including the environment, discrimination, racism, terrorism, and the role of the artist in society. More than ever, Colcoa will offer a unique opportunity to see these universal topics from different angles.”

Capturing the Cousteau allure by Anne-Katrin Titze
Jérôme Salle on Lambert Wilson as Jacques-Yves Cousteau: "It helps when you ask a very nice person to be a very tough person."

Once again, inside the Furman Gallery at Lincoln Center during the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema exhibition of Paul Ronald's color photographs from Federico Fellini's 81/2, where I met Christophe Honoré for a conversation on Les Malheurs De Sophie, The Odyssey (L'Odyssée) director Jérôme Salle spoke with me on the performances of Lambert Wilson and Audrey Tautou. Bill Murray and Cate Blanchett in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, composer Alexandre Desplat, Calypso captain Albert Falco (Vincent Heneine), nicknamed Bébert (which recalls for me the cat featured in Emmanuel Bourdieu's Louis-Ferdinand Céline), were also washed ashore.

Jérôme Salle: "I'm the kind of director who loves to tell stories with pictures more than words." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze

In 2015, at an Oceana event hosted by Cobie Smulders, I spoke with Jacques-Yves Cousteau's granddaughter and Expedition Blue Planet filmmaker, Alexandra Cousteau. In my conversation with The Odyssey (L'Odyssée) director, Jérôme Salle, we explore the world around Alexandra's grandfather portrayed by Lambert Wilson in his film with Audrey Tautou as Jacques' wife Simone, Pierre Niney (Adrian in François Ozon's Frantz) and Benjamin Lavernhe as their sons.

Simone (Audrey Tautou) and Jacques Cousteau (Lambert Wilson)

With a screenplay, co-written with Laurent Turner, loosely based on the books by Jean-Michel Cousteau (My Father, the Captain: Life with Jacques Cousteau) and Albert Falco (Capitaine de La Calypso) and a score by longtime Wes Anderson composer Alexandre Desplat, Salle takes us on a personal family journey at sea.
