If you are a horror fan then you might have heard about the director duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who gave us brilliant horror films like 2022’s Scream and 2019’s Ready or Not and now they are back with their new and even campier horror film Abigail. Written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick, the new horror film is a reimagining of the 1936 Universal Classic Monsters film Dracula’s Daughter and it follows the story of a group of kidnappers who are told to kidnap the daughter of a very powerful man and keep her in the house for 24 hours, but they quickly realize that the daughter might not be what she seems. Abigail stars Alisha Weir, Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Will Catlett, Kathryn Newton, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, Giancarlo Esposito, and Matthew Goode. So, if you loved the horror, survival, and gory elements of Abigail here are some...

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for multiple movies.
Slasher movies often struggle to strike a balance between killing off characters and keeping them likable for viewers to care about their fate. Modern slashers like Thanksgiving and Scream 6 have taken a trend of killing off minor characters in brutal fashion while sparing the main characters, which can be seen as a cheat. Some horror movies, like The Strangers and Final Destination 5, have gone against expectations and killed off all of their heroes, leading to shocking and bleak endings.
While most slashers cut a bloody swathe through their cast, there are surprisingly few entries into the horror subgenre that take things to their logical extreme and kill off every character. Slasher movies have a tough job. For a slasher to be an effective addition to the subgenre, the movie must be relatively ruthless and kill off most of its cast.

In 2008, writer-director Bryan Bertino’s home invasion horror, The Strangers, messed with a lot of folks’ heads. For an hour and a half audiences were wrapped up in tension as Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman were terrorized by a trio of masked killers known only as Man in Mask (Kip Weeks), Dollface (Gemma Ward), and Pin-Up Girl (Laura Margolis). The original script inspired a sequel almost immediately, and due to difficulties in development The Strangers: Prey at Night, co-written by Bertino, was released ten years later to continue the senseless slayings with a slasher spin, yet still no explanation as to why.

The Strangers is a chilling horror film that presents a darkly nihilistic vision of the world, where violence invades the home and can't be reasoned with. The film drew inspiration from real crimes, including the Helter Skelter murders and home invasion burglaries, which added to its high-profile cast and unconventional perspective. Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman, Gemma Ward, Kip Weeks, Laura Margolis, and Glenn Howerton deliver impressive performances in their respective roles, adding depth to the characters and heightening the suspense.
The Strangers tells its unique horror story with a blended cast of established actors and relative unknowns. The film, from writer-director Bryan Bertino, follows a couple, Kristen and James, who find themselves at the mercy of a trio of masked killers, with no apparent motivation for the home invasion attack. It’s a chilling film, one that does away with the moralizing tone of teen slashers which punish drinking and premarital sex.

Horror comes in many types, from popcorn hell-raisers to deep and thoughtful mental anguish that will stay in our minds long after we’ve watched them. The best kinds, are the ones that tap into what you feel is safe away from the movie world, and bring horror home… and this is one thing that The Strangers did so well.
After returning home to an isolated vacation house after a night out, a couple hear a knock on the door. Seemingly a mistake, they send the people on their way, but it’s not long before a violent house invasion ensues by three masked individuals.

"Well, what if I told you I had a plan? It's the only thing powerful enough to stop what's coming." Magnet Releasing has debuted the first official trailer for a very weird, global-scale indie sci-fi film of sorts titled Higher Power, about a gamma ray that gives a human on Earth some crazy impressive superpowers. This is very hard to describe, you just have to dive into the footage. The official description is fairly vague as well, only explaining that "when the Universe decides what it wants, it's pointless to resist." You'll get a sense of this in the trailer. Starring Ron Eldard as Joe Steadman, who reminds me a lot of a young Jeff Daniels in Dumb & Dumber. The cast includes Jade Tailor, Austin Stowell, Jordan Hinson, Colm Feore, Tom Wright, and Laura Margolis. This actually looks pretty cool, and a bit weird. It's worth a watch, for sure.

While Hollywood savors The South by Southwest Film Festival as a testing ground for big comedies, one area of the fest that is definitely edgy, is its Midnighter section. Today, the 22nd annual SXSW announced 11 genre films, nine of which are world premieres, comprised of thrillers, sci-fi, dark comedies and horror as part of its Midnighters section as well as their shorts and music videos.
SXSW’s strength with absurd and Z grade fare is clearly evident in its Midnight short lineup where such kinky titles like Anal Juke (which is billed as the director’s “dream about my ex-boyfriend and the uneasy atmosphere of Japan after the earthquake are remixed”) and Kiss Kiss Fingerbang are receiving play slots. Or how about Crow Hand!!! which reads as a “Caw-tionary tale!”
The 106 shorts selected are from a record 4,935 submissions, a 16% uptick from last year. In talking with Deadline today, SXSW producer and senior programmer Jarod Neece,...

This marks the second year of the section and the 2015 offerings comprise 11 genre films including nine world premieres.
“Creepy, clever, engrossing, and frightening are just a few words that come to mind when I think about this year’s SXSW Midnighters line-up,” said SXSW producer and senior programmer Jarod Neece.
“These nine world premieres and two Festival Favorites are helmed by five, first-time filmmakers and several SXSW alumni. We will be screening four films a night at midnight during all nine days of SXSW, and we can’t wait to unleash them on the SXSW audiences”
The Midnighters line-up appears below including synopses provided by the festival:

ABC's guilty pleasure, Dirty Sexy Money, has been struggling. This season, the TV show has been averaging just six million viewers. The network had ordered 13 episodes for year two with the option of purchasing additional installments. They decided against exercising that option but one of the series' stars says that it's not over yet.
Dirty Sexy Money follows a lawyer (Peter Krause) who gets talked into representing the powerful Darling family; patriarch Tripp (Donald Sutherland), wife Letitia (Jill Clayburgh), and their five grown children -- politician Patrick (William Baldwin), promiscuous Karen (Natalie Zea), corrupt clergyman Brian (Glenn Fitzgerald), and party-loving twins Jeremy (Seth Gabel) and Juliet (Samaire Armstrong). Other performers include Blair Underwood, Zoe McLellan, Lucy Liu, Will Shadley, Laura Margolis, Bellamy Young, Candis Cayne, Shawn Michael Patrick, Chloe Moretz, Sheryl Lee, Andrea Smithson, and Daniel Cosgrove.

After posting a series low in the ratings last night, ABC has decided against ordering additional episodes of Dirty Sexy Money. Does that mean it's cancelled?
Dirty Sexy Money follows nice-guy lawyer Nick George (Peter Krause) who takes over his late father's only client, the wealthy and powerful Darling family. Tripp Darling (Donald Sutherland) is incredibly influential but is living proof that money isn't everything. His relationships with his wife Letitia (Jill Clayburgh) and their five grown children is sometimes shaky at best. His adult children are politician Patrick (William Baldwin), promiscuous Karen (Natalie Zea), corrupt clergyman Brian (Glenn Fitzgerald), and immature, party-loving twins Jeremy (Seth Gabel) and Juliet (Samaire Armstrong). Other characters are played by Blair Underwood, Zoe McLellan, Lucy Liu, Will Shadley, Laura Margolis, Bellamy Young, Candis Cayne, Shawn Michael Patrick, Chloe Moretz, Sheryl Lee, Andrea Smithson, and Daniel Cosgrove.
Money debuted in September 2007 on ABC. The premiere...

Despite mediocre season one ratings, ABC decided to renew Dirty Sexy Money for year two. Unfortunately, it hasn't paid off and time is running out for the Darlings.
As Dirty Sexy Money begins, idealistic lawyer Nick George (Peter Krause) finds himself taking over his late father's single client, the rich and dysfunctional Darling family. Patriarch Tripp Darling (Donald Sutherland) is incredibly influential but needs help managing the fragile relationships with his wife Letitia (Jill Clayburgh) and their five grown children; politician Patrick (William Baldwin), promiscuous Karen (Natalie Zea), corrupt clergyman Brian (Glenn Fitzgerald), and immature, party-loving twins Jeremy (Seth Gabel) and Juliet (Samaire Armstrong).
Tripp also needs Nick's help in fending off enemies like billionaire Simon Elder (Blair Underwood). Thankfully, Nick has the support of his wife Lisa (Zoe McLellan) and their young daughter. Other characters are played by Lucy Liu, Will Shadley, Laura Margolis, Bellamy Young, Candis Cayne, Shawn Michael Patrick,...

Film Review: The Strangers
OPENS: Friday, May 30 (Rogue Pictures).
Every now and then a horror film comes along that bucks the going copycat trends and manages to scare up some unique shivers.
Say hello to "The Strangers", a spare, creepily atmospheric psychological thriller with a death grip on the psychological aspect.
First-time director Bryan Bertino -- his script was a quarterfinalist for the prestigious Nicholl Fellowship grant -- has taken a cue from the fright films of the '70s, but unlike others evoking the era, the influences are more character-rooted than derivatively stylized.
Although horror generally has taken a bit of a beating at the boxoffice lately, fans should be able to discern "Strangers" as the real deal, providing Rogue Pictures with a little lucrative "death in the country" counterprogramming to "Sex and the City".
Ostensibly inspired by actual events concerning senseless acts of violence (not that it really matters), the film is set in the secluded South Carolina family vacation home where James (Scott Speedman) was intending to celebrate his engagement to Kristen (Liv Tyler).
But it's apparent from the tension between the couple as they pull up to the house in pitch darkness that things didn't go as planned on the proposal front.
Once inside, things quickly start going bump in the night as it becomes clear they aren't alone.
Like the best of psychological horror in its purest form, there's always the lingering possibility that the terrifying intruders could be manifestations of the lead characters' own suppressed rage.
Not that it's necessary to go there, since Bertino hand delivers the ghoulish goods with a claustrophobic tension and a minimum of gore that has been handily supplanted by a chillingly effective sound schematic.
He also has a surprisingly expressive scream queen in Tyler, who, left alone to her own devices for major stretches in the film, conveys much with little or no dialogue.
That less-is-more approach also works for Speedman's character as well as for those unsettling masked intruders, identified in the credits by the monikers Dollface (Gemma Ward), Pin-Up Girl (Laura Margolis) and the wheezing Man in the Mask (Kip Weeks).
Let the nightmares begin.
