Good Charlotte Wanted To 'Dig Deep' For Cardiology

Good Charlotte have spent the past 18 months prepping Cardiology, their fifth studio album. The band wrote and recorded an entire album's worth of material, then, unhappy with the results, decided to scrap the project entirely and start over again from scratch with a new producer at the helm. Needless to say, it's been a bit of a struggle. The kind of thing that adds years — and, in this case, family members — to people's lives.

"I started this record with one child; now I have two," smiled frontman Joel Madden, who got engaged to longtime girlfriend Nicole Richie in February.. "And now, the record is like my third child."

The process began with producer Howard Benson, famous for his work with acts...

Good Charlotte Start Recording Their Album All Over Again
Rockers Good Charlotte have scrapped their new album, and returned to the studio to record it again. Guitarist Benji Madden made the tough decision to wipe the disc after returning from a tour of Australia and listening to the new tracks for the first time - because he was unhappy with the way it sounded.

The band has now traveled to Vancouver, Canada to start recording "Cardiology" again, with producer Don Gilmore. In a message posted on Good Charlotte's website, Madden explains, "When we got back from the last trip to Australia, we had pretty much finished recording the record. I went into the studio to hear some roughs and it just wasn't right."

"I couldn't figure it out. I was so lost. I love the songs, I love the lyrics, so what was the problem. I was just so bewildered. Devastated actually. This had never happened. I felt crazy.

Artist of the Week: Lacuna Coil
Lacuna Coil are gearing up to release new studio album "Shallow Life" across America on April 21. Prior to the album's release, they have debuted "Spellbound", the first single off the record, during 2009 Australian Soundwave Festival in February. A month later, a music video for the song was premiered.

Commenting on what the new album is all about, vocalist Cristina Scabbia says it "is [about] a natural metamorphosis from within the band." She continues, "We explored different musical territories while maintaining our own style. A mix of old and new, fast and slow and light and dark."

"The album production is incredibly powerful and has a beautiful purity to it. Hopefully listeners will feel the same sort of connection that we have to these songs. 'Shallow Life' has forced us to challenge ourselves. It represents the way we see ourselves in the days we live in through truth, love and lies."

Lacuna Coil Debut 'Spellbound' Music Video
A music video aimed to promote Lacuna Coil's new single "Spellbound" has been released. Newly premiered on ArtistDirect, the video was directed by Saku and filmed at the Dolce & Gabbana Gold restaurant in Milan, Italy.

The location provides perfect atmosphere to express "Shallow Life" theme they want to bring in the video. Everything is really shiny and "bling bling" while the band perform in the middle of a golden room full of mirrors and giant chandeliers.

"We had a great time shooting the video for 'Spellbound' and it also marks our first time working with acclaimed Italian director Saku in a location that's really peculiar," so vocalist Cristina Scabbia comments on the video. "It was filmed in a very fashionable place: the restaurant 'Gold' located in Milan, Italy, which owned by the fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana, who kindly gave us the permission to film over there!"

"Spellbound" is lifted from...

Lacuna Coil - Shallow Life (Musick Review)
There's something beautifully haunting in the opening moments of "I Survive", the intro track on Lacuna Coil's latest offering, Shallow Life. With a spooky melody that recalls the theme from Rosemary's Baby, my ears perked up just in time for the double-bass assault and heavy riffage. Sadly, it's almost all downhill from there.

The Italian band's fifth studio album (out April 21st on Century Media Records), picks up where 2006's Karmacode left off, continuing their rapid movement away from Gothic metal and straight toward pop-stardom, all while losing most of the heaviness that the band previously maintained. While much of the 43-minute, 12-track set is unmemorable, the band does deliver with the fourth cut, "I'm Not Afraid", which should've been the album's first single as opposed to "Spellbound."

The dueling vocals of Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro become grating very quickly, making you wish that Scabbia fronted the band by herself.
