Channing Tatum is about to take on one of his wildest roles yet. In the upcoming movie Roofman, he plays Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger who escapes prison and ends up secretly living in a Toys “R” Us store.
The twist? He’s also robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting through their roofs. The first trailer shows that while he might be a criminal, he’s not your usual bad guy. For instance, when he traps the workers in a freezer, he politely makes sure they have their coats so they don’t freeze.
Directed by Derek Cianfrance, the filmmaker behind Blue Valentine, Roofman is inspired by a real story. Yes, this actually happened. Manchester really did break into fast food joints through the roofs and even managed to hide inside a closed-down Toys “R” Us for months without anyone noticing.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued an executive directive Tuesday aimed at removing some of the red tape surrounding local film and television production.
The directive orders city departments to “cut regulations and streamline processes” for the industry, per Bass’ office. Those orders include making iconic locations like the Griffith Observatory, Port of LA, and the Central Library cheaper and easier to shoot at and instituting a “proactive, film-friendly approach to communication” between productions and the city, particularly on matters that could impact filming schedules.
Bass is also directing the city to require only a single city staffer on set. Previously, multiple staffers including firefighters and retired or off-duty police could be required depending on the shoot.
“The City is taking bold action to support our legacy industry,” Bass said Tuesday. “Keeping entertainment production in L.A. means keeping good-paying jobs in L.A., and that’s what we are fighting for.

L.A. Mayor Karen Bass is advancing efforts to streamline film and television production in Los Angeles amid cries for further policymaker intervention on the issue of runaway production.
Bass calls for a reduction of city staffers on shoots and improved access for crews to iconic Los Angeles locations like the Griffith Observatory, the Central Public Library and the Port of Los Angeles in an executive order that was signed Tuesday at the L.A. headquarters of performers’ union SAG-AFTRA. The directive further enlists city departments to cut red tape and help ease basic production headaches in a bid to improve the city’s friendliness to filmmakers.
At SAG-AFTRA on Tuesday, Bass emphasized that Hollywood supports middle-class jobs, small businesses and the city’s economy. Her executive order, she said, “will make it far easier to film in Los Angeles movies, television shows and commercials.”

After joining the MCU, creating a film production empire, and closing out his iconic tenure as “Magic Mike,” Channing Tatum is making yet another career pivot: leading legendary indie director Derek Cianfrance’s latest feature, “Roofman.”
Tatum stars as the titular vigilante who lived in a Toys ’R’ Us store and broke into more than 60 McDonald’s, emptying cash registers after herding staffs into freezers. The Roofman robber became an urban myth, and now it’s Tatum’s turn to bring his story to the screen. Tatum onstage at CinemaCon teased the footage and called him the “unusually polite” robber and said Cianfrance’s film is “equal parts devastatingly emotional but also hilarious.”
The trailer that was shown at CinemaCon described the film as “based on a true story *as told by a liar.” Tatum’s character explains that after escaping from prison, running as far away as possible doesn’t work.

The former leader of theater-owner’s group NATO has a new way to get your independent film into movie theaters — one intended to cut out the middleman.
John Fithian is launching an online marketplace to connect filmmakers directly with exhibitors. The platform is called “Attend,” and it puts the “intelligence” into its artificial intelligence. Attend’s tech, powered by the Vista Group, pairs filmmakers with the specific theaters best suited to their movie. For exhibitors, Attend is a portal to a broader range of content. This way, filmmakers retain the rights to their movie, and exhibitors keep control over their screens.
Sorry about all of that, distributors.
A filmmaker uploads details about (and assets from) their films directly into Attend, including metadata and other specifics. The platform’s AI will match the movie with theaters based on their customer data, local demographics, and affinity groups.
Attend will launch an alpha phase in the U.

Paramount will release “Roofman,” the upcoming film from “The Place Beyond the Pines” director Derek Cianfrance, on October 3, 2025 as part of a first look deal with Miramax, which acquired the film for distribution in the U.S. and other specific territories.
Based on a true story, the film stars Channing Tatum as Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger who falls on hard times and resorts to robbing various McDonald’s locations, earning the media nickname “Roofman” for how he carves holes in the roofs of the fast food joints to pull off his heists.
After escaping from prison, he starts a new life while hiding in a toy store, falling in love with a single mother, played by Kirsten Dunst, and her two daughters. However, his criminal past and a final robbery threaten to destroy his chance at redemption.
Peter Dinklage also stars in the film, which Cianfrance co-wrote with Kirk Gunn.

Hold the Phone! Stars Are Dialing for Kamala
Hey, swing state voters, pick up the damn phone already! It could be Jessica Alba calling. Or Patton Oswalt. Or any number of other stars who’ve been diligently manning phone banks for the Kamala Harris campaign the past several weeks. While there haven’t been a whole lot of celebrities turning up in political TV ads this election cycle — there’s always been some doubt about how impactful those are, anyway — Hollywood types have been finding other, more personal ways of whispering into voters’ ears. “About five weeks ago, I started Phone Banking Fridays,” says producer Jamie Patricof (Half Nelson, The Place Behind the Pines), who is now shooting a movie — Roofman, with Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst — in the swingiest of swing states, North Carolina, and corralling some of his cast and crew (and their friends) into spending a few...
